Pokemon: Rocket vs. Police

Well, I'm calling it that until I can come up with a better name at least. It is a hack of Fire Red.

ABOUT THE HACK

This is a hack unlike any other you have experienced thus far. It is a hack that puts you in control of what happens in the world. It is a hack that puts you into a position of power. It has the much desired story line that the Pokemon series has been lacking. And that is only the beginning.

THE STORYLINE

The storyline of the hack goes something like this. You are a young trainer looking to get into [NAME LATER] Academy, where trainers go to learn how to become a person of authority. You meet someone on your very first day at the Academy [your rival], and the two of you become fast friends. You will learn much about the game here, so make sure you pay attention! It will turn out that you and your rival are the academies two most brilliant students, so the Dean himself personally invites the pair of you into his office to congratulate you and offer you a "sneak peak" of upcoming events.

You see, after you graduate, various companies and agencies across the region will come to [NAME] Academy to recruit the graduate students among their ranks. After all, [NAME] Academy has a reputation of producing some of the finest leaders ever seen.

The two biggest agencies that look for recruits are the Region Police, and Rocket Inc., the "legitimate" face of Team Rocket.

Anyway, it turns out that because you and your rival were the best in the school, you will get to choose which agency you ally yourself with. Now, there are several agencies that you can look at, but only two really catch your eye; the Police and the Rockets. You can go to their booths and learn more about what they do and what they are about.

After you have talked to both reps from both agencies, you must tell the Dean who you will join. You will receive your first pokemon from your choice agency. Whatever your choice is, your rival will choose the other agency, and will be hurt that you did not choose the same as him (it's messed up I know, but it's still kind of funny. :P). He will battle you, to see which of you were right. After that, your journey and your legend will unfold...

WHAT YOU WILL SEE

This hack will bring you never before seen gameplay and features. Some of the key features include:

  • A new type of gameplay - instead of wandering around aimlessly like you normally do, you will take a strategic view of the world. Your actions will form the world around you.
  • Strategy based gameplay, including RTS battles.
  • Instead of badges, you have ranks given to you by your agency.
  • You will fight your rival and his agency in a never ending battle of control.
  • Various missions you must preform to further the interests of your agency, whether it be a "fund raiser", harassing the other agency, and more.
  • If you can expect to find it from Team Rocket or the Police, you will find it here. ;)
  • And so much more...

MORE TO COME

At this point, this is still just an idea. I don't have any maps made, or any scripts written. I wasn't really sure where to start, but I've decided that I will first make the academy, and the events for it. Once I get that done, I'll post some screenshots. I'm a newbie at ROM hacking, so don't expect anything spectacular.

Questions, comments, ideas, (offers of help :P) are welcome. :)

Impossible hack much? RTS battles? 2 agencies?

Kaylee Krysteenah Fynch February 22nd, 2009 2:49 AM

I kind of see what Stalin means. You don't want a vision that's bigger than you can fulfill. It'll definitely be hard to give a choice between two agencies, because that means two full sets of storyline-events. That means a LOT of flags - if you don't know what I mean, try looking up some scripting tutorials. They can be a little hard, but you should be able to learn something. And you'll DEFINITELY want to stick with regular Pokemon battles, unless you know where you could find help to change it - I don't even know if it's possible.

That said, it is a really marvelous idea. Even if you only found a way to include the dual-plot storyline, it would be pretty good as long as you had interesting events. If the events matched up, then that would give your game an interesting feel for someone who chose to re-play it as a member of the opposite side.

So don't completely give up. Try to find out what you can and can't do with your game, and then shape your vision a little to fit your ability.

Good luck, and don't get too discouraged. ^^

When it comes to actions forming the world there are two things you must have that are ABSOLUTELY necassary (trust me, I know), they are pen and paper or Notepad, it's safer and is a lot less of a hassel.

This will require...
CALCULATING...
OVERDRIVE....
PLEASE WAIT....
WHY DON'T YOU READ A BOOK WHILE YOU WAIT...
COMPUTATION COMPLETE!
ESTIMATED TIME FOR SCRIPTING EVENTS FOR BOTH SIDES...
UNDETERMINABLE

Darn, if my super awesome all caps words can't figure how much scripting, then I'll have to tell you A LOT.

Caps make me feel like I'm in power, which I am not...
*sigh*

Not that I know much but, that does seem like an incredible task. Why not make two versions, like Rocket Black and Police Blue. You join the team that the game is named aftar. I would definitly want to play that!

This is an absolutely utterly brilliant idea for a game.

For a hack, though, it would be nigh-on impossible. Scripting a game so that two completely different events would occur in the exact same area, and going through an entire GAME like that... it would take forever, and it would be very, very to mess things up royally.

The RTS idea is a completely different issue. You'd basically be throwing away the entire battle engine of Pokémon and making a completely new one from scratch, then inserting it into the Pokémon ROM. That's the hacking equivalent of going "Here's a Windows; here's a pile of 0's and 1's; now rewrite the binary code and turn it into a Mac, we'll see you in three weeks." It can probably done, but it'd be very, very hard.

I've got a couple of suggestions. First for the two-plots-in-the-same-region, don't make it the same region. Like, if you join Team Rocket, they take you to their base and you never see the Academy again, and if you join the police, they take you to their HQ and you never see the Academy again; but, they actually take you two completely different-but-identical-looking regions, say, Kanto 1 and Kanto 2. If you're taken to Kanto 1, you're in Team Rocket, and all the events there will have to do with the Team Rocket plot. If you're taken to Kanto 2, you're in the Police, and all the events there will have to do with the Police plot. From inside the game it will look like you're in the same region, but this will make it easier to keep track of the plots. You'll basically be making two games, separated because you can't get from the map of one game to the map of the other.

For the RTS idea, don't make a hack. Make a game. Head over to the Game Development section, look around, see what kind of tools they have and what you can do with them. You'll have to start from scratch to make the game, unfortunately, but if you really want the RTS idea you'd pretty much have to start from scratch anyway. At least in Game Development you'd have even more control over the game and you'd be around people who might know a bit more about the kinds of things you want to do.

Whatever you decide to do, I think this is would make an awesome game, I'd love to play it, and I wish you luck in finding a method that would actually work to get the game to function. (And if you DO move over to Game Development, keep me updated on your progress because I don't visit the Game Development section much and would hate to miss this.)

I could help with the map!!!

Razer Rage February 23rd, 2009 11:48 AM

Thanks for the feedback all. I'm not going to argue with you whether or not it is possible in a hack, I still intend to try. And if it doesn't work, I'll use poccils kit instead.

@machomuu and ckret: Thanks for the tips, I'll keep that in mind. ;)

If it's possibly it'd be a p. good hack...

Come again?

And an update: I have a basic RTS battle engine designed (it was more like a tower defense engine at first. :P), and more importantly, I believe it is possible to achieve via XSE (might need some ASM).

The first thing I'm trying to figure it is how to add multi-choice menus. And failing that, how to edit the values (text) of existing multi-choice menus. Any suggestions?

soyeahimbored February 24th, 2009 9:59 PM

This game sounds quite amazing...and quite difficult to create.
I recommend that you go with the idea of two separate games like Rocket Red and Police Blue so you could have your great idea just it would depend on which version you were playing is which team you go to.

The RTS thing might be a *tad* hard to implement. :P

But all in all, great idea, aiming high is always good and well...good luck! =]

CasyCoati February 24th, 2009 10:25 PM

Well good luck to you, if you can do it, it'll be fantastic. I love the idea I hope you make it, I suggest game development to for it to be easier for you plus I will definitely get to play it then because illegal downloads will be banned in my country soon. :( And I got the real Fire Red game to.
