Just a question
I just want to know more about the usage of whom instead of who. I never understood it, and I would like to make sure that I am not using who when I should be using whom.
|
Well the best way I can explain it is it does not really matter much a lot of people just say who, whom is a concept of very proper writing and is not stressed to heavily like many other things are such as alot vs. a lot or their and there, so do not worry about it.
|
Let me give you some examples that might help you.
Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar? That sounds better than... Whom stole the cookie from the cookie jar?' ...right? Here's how you can make it sound good using "whom". Someone stole the cookie from the cookie jar, but whom? Then again, using "who" sounds fine as well. Someone stole the cookie from the cookie jar, but who? So, my take on it is, don't substitute who with whom, but feel free to substitute whom with who. If that makes any sense to you... |
"Who" is the subject, and therefor a pronoun; whereas "whom" is the object, or a objective case.

Learning when to use "who" and when to use "whom" is being grammatically correct, same with learning when to use "their" and "there" and "they're". And "alot" isn't a word. So there is no "versus" because there is no proper time to use "alot". It's always "a lot". O_o Unless you mean "allot"... |
I'm going to probably fail explaining this, but I'll give you a tip. If you still have no idea what word to use, try rephrasing the word to exclude who or whom.
If you can rephrase who/whom with he/she/they, then you use who. Likewise, if you can rephrase who/whom with him/her/them, then you use whom. 1) Example with who/whom: [Who/whom] is going to the dance? Rephrased example: [She] is going to the dance So in this case, you would use who. "Who is going to the dance?" 2) Example with who/whom: Lina wondered [who/whom] would take her to the dance. Rephrased example: Lina would be taken to the dance by [him]. Since you use him (or her) in this sentence, you would use whom. Thus "Lina wondered whom would take her to the dance." |
I didn't mean that alot is proper I was just saying a lot of people tend to use alot and it really comes down to who are you writing this for, in this case a fan fic probally doesn't need to be proper down to every last letter I am not saying it isn't important to the OP I was just pointing out a lot of people do not use whom period so it isn't a big issue.

You're posting fanfics so that other people can read them. If the basic rules of grammar aren't followed and making sure words are spelled correctly isn't done, then people might not want to read your fanfic because it reflects poorly on you, the author. If you run your fanfic through a basic basic spell-checker (or perhaps paid attention in English class, if that's still being taught), then you would find that "alot" is spelled wrong. So having "alot" in your fanfic shows that perhaps you just either didn't run your fic through a spell-checker, or you did and ignored it. So let's say that someone comes along and reviews your fic, and they say "Erm, it's actually 'a lot'." Now, do you ignore them and say "Fanfics aren't proper! I can spell things the way I want to!" I would say that that's not the correct response, because they are just helping you with your spelling. And hey, if people tell you enough times that "a lot" is two words, then it sinks in. And the other rules of grammar that you learn from writing fanfics, or anything, properly, will help you out in the long run at school and at finding work because it just makes you look better. - And yeah, Kenji's right. There is no "versus" with "a lot" and "alot". There's particular instances where you use "whom" or "who". There are particular instances where you use "there" or "their" or "they're". There are no instances where you use "alot" when "a lot" is the correct choice. It's either "a lot" or "allot". - Eeeeeee...My thoughts on "a lot". Let me show you them. |
I'm impressed. Such a smooth transition from who/whom to alot/a lot. Well done, us. ^_^
I'm afraid I can't answer the OP, but Breezy seems to have that down. I myself have learned a thing or two, in fact. |
