Why, I've netted me a trainer!

What do you think of the different trainers in the game?
Specifically, what they say before they battle you (ie. a Psychic says "I forsee your defeat" or a Hiker says "I'm a hiker, I like hiking, hike hike hike").

Sometimes they bring a smile to my face, but sometimes their puns are too much.

One time there was this huy that give you a TM pycho bost right and he was all like I AM STRONG I AM STRON I AM STRONG I AM STRONG I AM STRONG I AM STRONG for like forever then he gave me a tm and said like YOU BE STRONG

Kokuo March 22nd, 2009 1:58 PM

Frob March 22nd, 2009 2:00 PM

I remember that! I hated Magikarp trainers, they were so annoying, and I remember them forever, so I can skip them in every game.

But on topic, there puns are funny, but most of the time, I don't care what they are saying, it's just a few that appeal to me or catches me.

M O M U S U March 22nd, 2009 2:42 PM

I remember a Picknicker in the desert area in Emerald, who said "If you lose, I'll give you one of my sandwiches!"

After I beat him, he said "I thought a sandwich was a good bribe..."
And then after the battle, he said "My Pokemon love my sandwiches."

I thought that was really funny, I wish he would have made another appearance in Generation IV.

I had the exact same reaction. I told a friend (he was sitting next to me, playing his own game) and he laughed too (he's a Magicarp hater).

Hmmmm, level 6 (I think) Magikarp vs level 15 Turtwig, who will be the winner..?
I can't envision any scenario in which the Magicarp could possibly win.

Azonic March 22nd, 2009 3:13 PM

Most of them have really lame puns. None of them really manage to make me laugh. XD

I remember this guy on Cycling Road who repeated "RYDEL" like 100 times before getting to the battle. XD

My god, I must avoid him at all costs.

I remember there being a kid who talks about how wonderful his shorts are, but I can't remember which game he's from...

Wasn't that Red Version?!?
Lol.
Does anyone else feel that Gym Leaders are notorious for lame puns?

My friend battles them for just comic relief.

I find the trainers and their speech to be really funny. XD

Ha! I just encountered him. I finished battling him...

Spoiler:
Magikarp used Splash.

It did nothing.

Turtwig used Absorb.

It's super effective!

Magikarp fainted.

He doesn't actually battle you (I think); he's pretty annoying if you accidentally talk to him, though.

Do you mean 'I like shorts. They're comfy and easy to wear.'?

I think in D/P's Victory Road, there's a Black Belt who says something like, 'I made it this far with karate I learned on the Internet!'. Internet karate FTW!

EJ March 23rd, 2009 11:14 AM

I thought Maylene's dialogue was retarded. She's a gym leader that has no idea why and she tells you about it.

Amaranthine March 23rd, 2009 11:19 AM

Who can't forget the Juggler in Red/Blue, who when defeated says....

oops! dropped my balls!
LOL!
....
Um...
I hope that's not obscene or offensive to anyone...

CrazyCubone March 23rd, 2009 11:22 AM

There was a Youngster who gets mad at you for not wearing shorts. I think it was in the first generation. That guy on Cycling Road in the third generation who said Rydel a hundred times made me laugh. xD

Red and Blue had the best trainers.

Gymnotide March 23rd, 2009 12:25 PM

Ugh the cycling road between Eterna and Oreburgh was just "Hey, you have a bike and some Pokemon too.. Let's battle!" over and over and over and over.

Akeraz March 23rd, 2009 1:54 PM

*points out sailor in wakes gym*
he sais something about how he rolls.
can't remember it exactly.
I should really.

.inLOVE March 23rd, 2009 2:42 PM

I think they can say some pretty dumb things. I shall defeat your Pokemon before you will even see me! It's like, ZOMG, a psychic trainer said that!

You'd be right. He's just to the side of the path between Mauville and Slateport for those who talk to everyone to regret doing so, later... XD I accidentally talked to him a number of times. I don't recall why, though...

Anyway, as for my opinion on the comments made by the trainers in the Pokemon games, some of them are okay, such as the simple ones made by your casual Lass and such, as well as the ones made by Ladies and Rich Kids, but others asre just awful. One I found interesting, though more for the end-of-battle comment, was the Socialite near Backlot's Pokemon Mansion; how the battle she has against you is nothing like when she battles her friends. Its the simple ones that I feel are better received, rather than the dialogue that tries to bring in stuff like web-based lingo (e.g. noob) and the like. I never liked how they did that, personally...

But in conclusion, some are okay, others are just average or terrible.

Greeneflower March 23rd, 2009 6:15 PM

I don't care what they say, I like what they do :D My favovrite thing they do is in Platinum, your rival does his funny dance before a battle with him. I love his funny dance. *looks at rival do dance* ROFL!

Alternative March 23rd, 2009 6:43 PM

I remember in the battle tower or something on my Pearl Version, there was this Black belt and says something along the lines of.
"You know, I don't really know karate.
