Tradition before the 1st Gym.

What level do you usually train your pokemon to before facing the 1st gym leader? I usually get 2 pokemon and train them to either 16-18 before even stepping foot in the gym. What about you guys?

gigabyte8877 April 4th, 2009 12:36 PM

I do Too. Lol. Im very concerned about winning the gym the first time..
I try to at least get my starter to lv. 18, and others to 14-16
And Normally by the first gym I have at least 3 Pokemon...

i1337 April 4th, 2009 1:12 PM

all in the 14-17 range usually, lol.

Zuckerspatz April 4th, 2009 1:37 PM

Level 10.
Call me weird, but my Pokemon are always way behind in levels.
They're usually lower levelled than wild Pokemon.
IN fact, all of my pokemon except for 1 were below level 50 when I beat the Elite 4. o.O

Dr. Strange April 4th, 2009 2:00 PM

Hmm, I only use my starter(evolved) to beat Roark when they are at level 16+, all of my other pokes aren't really needed to beat him.

I'm putting a gym leader down XD

How do you survive in Platinum???

Yamikarasu April 4th, 2009 2:01 PM

I'll do that if I've chosen a starter that weak to the first gym's type, but otherwise I'll just use my starter and sweep the first gym easily.

MalafeX April 4th, 2009 2:02 PM

I always catch a flying type pokemon before facing the gym leader.

Weird, I do the same thing O_o

Didn't see that coming nor did I notice me doing that o_O

Gymnotide April 4th, 2009 2:28 PM

I capture a Geodude, train my starter to around 13? Then begin.
For G/S/C, I capture a Gastly and a Dunsparce.

Me too, but i always seem to do it.

Akeraz April 4th, 2009 2:31 PM

I make sure I evolve my starter before Facing Roark.
>_>
Unless it's Turtwig.
Because I do not wish to grind on Geodudes until I reach level 18.

Honestly? I have no idea.
Quite a bit of luck.

Dark Mike April 4th, 2009 2:37 PM

Depending on the game.
But on diamond, i just run straight at the gym as soon as i can... I always win ;)

Glaceon_ April 4th, 2009 3:21 PM

For me, it depends on the Starter I choose. Its always Level 14 if I choose Chimchar (so that it evolves and learns Mach Punch) but with the other two, they usually end up on Level 14-16 while fighting in the Gym.

With my Platinum, I ended up catching a Budew to push myself through the Gym a little quicker, but it was only a temporary stand-in for my real team; much like Buizel was, when I used it in Platinum as well. I've never taken on Roark at anything lower than Level 13, though.

As for other aspects, I usually catch a Starly, but I actually broke the mold, so to speak, when I ended up not bothering with a Flying type in my Platinum until after getting to the North part of Route 210 for a Swablu. (which is after getting the SecretPotion from Cynthia) Instead, the only Pokemon I caught that I was actually planning on using around the first couple of towns was a Shinx on Route 202.

Ahh, something that holds true in Platinum; I usually train up to Level 9/10 before taking on the Rival for the first (second, in Platinum) time. I try to keep all my levels even, so whatever Pokemon I plan on using, I train them all up to Level 9/10.

Other than that, I spend something like 10 minutes deciding on what name to use for my character . XD

OokamiShipper April 4th, 2009 3:24 PM

I'm I usually catch two additional Pokemon along with my starter and level them up quickly. Usually, at the end of the training, my team's about 3 levels higher than the first gym leader's average. x3

Metalchic April 4th, 2009 3:35 PM

my pokemon are usualy at least 5 levels behind the gym leaders/E4 pokemon :S that includes the 1st one.

Dark Rhyperior April 4th, 2009 8:33 PM

I train my Pokemon to at least 10+ before the first gym, but I also try to evolve my starter before that as well.

Jas_66 April 4th, 2009 9:31 PM

well the cases are differnt in different games...
but in diamond i chose chimchar which is a bad match up for the first gym so i kept on battling caught a starly and wat not. evolved my chimchar in monferno and only used that 1 pokemon 2 destroy the gym leader lolz.

Dainty April 4th, 2009 9:37 PM

I don't do anything. I get to them at the level I get to them at, and beat them with that level.

I always try to beat the E4 in the shortest amount of time as possible. Then I play.
I always choose Fire starters. My favorites.

The CriminaL April 4th, 2009 9:47 PM

I train my Pokemon to level 15 then stop...Platinum was different however and I was really lazy so my team was unbalanced.

Mimikyu402 April 5th, 2009 2:46 AM

I usually train 2 pokes before the first gym but no grinding I just beat all trainers I can find and then enter the gym the average lv for me is around 14- 16 then, I dont like to use a full part of pokes so I usually train around 3-4 through the game with 2 slots for the hm slaves at the bottom

Elite Overlord LeSabre™ April 5th, 2009 2:51 AM

I overlevel. I had two Pokemon around Lv. 22 when I faced Roark in Platinum. I started with Piplup so all that extra leveling wasn't even needed. Oh well, I'm currently 49-50 and still leveling up for Byron XD

mStar April 5th, 2009 6:49 AM

Mine is always on level 24/26. Thats so I can trian more, and be tougher for the next gym

That's not surprising. With Pearl my pokemon were all level 40 when I entered to fight the Elite 4 and Cynthia. Of course, two of them were Palkia and Groudon. Those two were what I mostly used againist Cynthia.

As for the first gym, I don't really have a certian level that I fight them at. I just be sure that I fought all of the trainers before I fight the first gym leader.
