Should Platinum be called Platinum?!

Ok- i was looking at a list of all the games- they were grouped together according to the Region in which they are based mainly in. I noticed something-
Gold and Silver are metals, right? And, Diamond and Pearl are... I don't know, I'll just say Substances. Anyways- Platinum is a metal, and Crystal is a ''substance''. Is anyone else noticing it? I think they messed up with the names, and should have had a third, separate Legendary mascot for Crystal. Does anyone else think so?

>_>
There's already been countless threads for this.
I doubt nintendo knew that they were going to make platinum, like what is it..
Eight years ago?

Sure, the names might be more fitting.
But it's what everyone's used to now.
End of discussion.

giradialkia April 7th, 2009 9:42 AM

Oh, well i never checked for other threads, so my bad.. Yeah i know, they definately wouldn't have known, But i still don't think they should have called it Platinum, but it's really Just a matter of opinion.

WiiMann April 7th, 2009 9:53 AM

Well does it matter now? They've named it and released it. It is what it is.

World King April 7th, 2009 10:08 PM

That's something I noticed a while ago: Gold and Silver, which are metals, had a sister version, which is Crystal, a jewelry piece (let's leave it at that). Diamond and Pearl, which are more jewelry, have a sister version which is Platinum, a metal. Yeah, I noticed this since a while back...

Red / Blue / Yellow - Charizard red / Blastioise blue / Pikachu yellow
Gold / Silver / Crystal - Ho-oh gold / Lugia silver / Suicune crystal
Ruby / Sapphire / Emerald : Groudon ruby / Kyogre sapphire / Emerald rayquaza
Diamond / Pearl / Platinum : Dialga diamond / Palkia pearl / Giratina platinum

ok. i listed those so.. you can get what i say, each version is named by the mascot's primary color, this is for the first two gens. the third gens, is based on gemstones - look at rayquaza, a gemstone at his forehead that is exacly as the Emerald gemstone. don't know about groudon and kyogre, probably again with the same think as the first two (probably emerald too.. but the gemstone emerald kinda fits ha)

Anyway, D/P/Pt, only platinum was based on a primary color (Giratina does not have a primary color. so they choose platinum, since it has a few platinum spots all around it) Dialga has a diamond at its chest, it shares the same trait with palkia (god, i sound like i copied this from bulbapedia <.<)

well.. you got it?

Lt. Silver April 8th, 2009 12:23 AM

A Diamond is a gemstone so does that mean it should have been a fourth game with Ruby, sapphire and Emerald?
They have their ways of working things out. person who posted above seems to know what they are talking about.

s0nido April 8th, 2009 1:53 AM

They should've called Crystal Platinum and Platinum Crystal. And renamed Pearl...um...Zirconia?
Meh, what can we do about it? I'm already used to Gold, Silver and Crystal anyway, but it would've sounded better to call Crystal Platinum, as Gold and Silver were metals.

Problem right there; naming Generation II's Crystal 'Platinum' wouldn't have made sense because none of the Legendary Pokemon really related to the colour/metal at all. Besides, you could argue that its a new trend set by Nintendo; the odd numbered Generations (Gen. I, Gen III) have names that relate to each other in some way, while even numbered Generations (Gen II, Gen IV) have an 'odd one out' kind of thing. But really, I'd claim that as just reading too far into things. I prefer the thought that they relate to the Pokemon they're the 'mascot' of. Though in saying that, R/B/Y could have just as easily had Moltres, Articuno and Zapdos as their Version mascots, lol

At the end of the day, its just the name of a game, so it really doesn't matter what they are named. Particularly when there are stranger named things in the world.

DiasIzn April 8th, 2009 3:54 AM

yeah it is pretty messed up. but it is what it is, and we cant do anything about that.

Ŧøry vs. M£A†¥³ April 8th, 2009 3:56 AM

Meh, it doesn't matter to me. Opal sounds cool, but many fans didn't like the name "opal."

xMeowthz April 8th, 2009 1:01 PM

Platinum should be with G/S, Crystal should be in D/P. I agree.

Honest April 8th, 2009 1:04 PM

Well, both a diamond and a pearl take amazing time and luck to form. Platinum... well, its like what you said. Crystal should have been Platinum, and Platinum, something along the lines of a jewel, I guess Crystal would cut it. xD

Nitrous Oxide April 8th, 2009 1:06 PM

Should have been "Pokemon Einsteinium".

Haza April 8th, 2009 1:13 PM

I think the mascots match with the titles so its fine the way it is.

I don't see how Giratina fits with "platinum".

Haza April 8th, 2009 1:38 PM

Well, in all honesty, giratina matches Opal better because of its name(Girasol is Opal but Platina is Platinum) and all but, Im used to Platinum so it fits.

Yeah, I remembered that after I posted that post. I was too lazy to fix it...

Ha, why didn't nintendo think of that(the 3 birds)? Lol.
Well, in Generation II, if they had named it ''Platinum'' then they could easily have made the mascot the (then) ''newly-discovered'' steel type. Which would have made perfect sense, really, as not only would it fit the name theme, but the type would have fitted, too. (Tho please don't delve into the fact that ''steel isn't platinum''). Or is it...?
No. (God, confusin myself now..).

Penumbra April 8th, 2009 5:20 PM

EDIT: To above post ^^
There's no certainty Platinum represents Steel.
Don't forget about the newly discovered Dark type...
Since theres two new types, there'd be room for speculation
as to why they chose Steel over dark.

And here's a post to break your theory of them naming it based on the mascot:

They clearly chose "crystal" as the third version of Gen 2, right?
It's not like they expected to name it crystal, it just so happened that
crystal was the colour representing Suicune. Or...

They already chose crystal as the name.
Really, Suicune doesn't really have any crystals..
Just some weird symbol attached to his head along
with some cloudy flowing stuff. But anyway,
if they chose the name that represents the
third of the trio (ie Pkmn Red + Green = Charizard and Venasaur.
third of the starters is Blastoise = Pkmn Blue. Same with
Rayquaza and Giratina), why would they choose
suicune? Suicune has it's own trio. Why
not Celebi? Celebi was the only other outcast.
Now, Celebi has his own class, along with Mew
and Jirachi and Shaymin and stuff. But
at the time, there was no trend, right?
And celebi seemed to be the other one left.

If the title is based on the mascot,
why is the mascot suicune and not Celebi?

Thus, it's clear that the name comes before the mascot..

OokamiShipper April 8th, 2009 5:47 PM

Well, I don't really mind, as long as Pokemon games are still being produced, I'm fine. xD
And since it affiliates with the PokeSpe manga, I'd rather it not change.

Azzurra April 8th, 2009 5:59 PM

It's what's in the game that matters, not just the name. I feel that the game should be called Platinum simply because it fits in with the legendary Pokemon you encounter.

Working Class Hero April 8th, 2009 6:37 PM

I assume they named Pearl Pearl because Palkia has a pearl. Same for Diamond. With Giratina, it is less obvious but the creator probably intended for it's spikes to be made of Platinum. Therefore, the name is going to be Platinum. So yes, it should be.

Tyrantrum April 8th, 2009 6:45 PM

It's just a name.

I really wouldn't even care if they called it Pokémon Eternity, it'll still be awesome. :P
