nice tutorials! they helped me a lot in the following sprites! (they will be shown in my game):)
This is a good tutorial, just about the pixel-over tutorial, say i'm talking about umbreon, wouldn't it be easier to make the black just 1 shade then shade it from scratch?

wow, easy to understand tuto's, thanks
Regarding the pixel-over tutorial, while you would probably get a better result by drawing the shading to match the style yourself, that's not what I had in mind while writing it. Back in 2009, the Pixel Art board was overrun by rom hackers looking for people to make sprites for their games; I made these tutorials to teach them how to make sprites for themselves, and tried to keep them as simple as possible.

Great tutorials! I was able to make these sprites with them, but I'm having trouble with overworld sprites and and back sprites for these trainers. Can anyone help?
...but why is the carrot gone?
With your tutorials i was able to switch this: Spoiler:
To this: Spoiler:
Thanks |
What you should do is try to recreate it from scratch, using what you have now as a reference.
Do trainer sprites have limited amount of color like Pokemon?
Yes, though it varies depending on the hardware. For the GBA games, it's sixteen colors... That's fifteen colors used in the sprite itself, and one found nowhere else on the sprite as the background. So technically, to remain consistent with the style, you should use fifteen colors. I'm not sure about DS games...
I'm pretty sure all the sprites (trainers and Pokémon alike) in the DS games have the same 15 colours + transparency limit.
It's still 4-bit, 16 colour sprites presumably due to memory constraints.
Nice Tutorials. Too bad , i cant do pixel art.Never turns out right.
very good tutorial!
Im impressed, and I have already made a decent amt. of "ok" trainers xD Im not too good with spriting.... :P |
Using the Overworld tutorial, I was able to get this:

Thanks Chesu for these tutorials, they're great. I was able to make this from them. The overworld in HGSS style, also helped from other overworlds.
The battle graffic needs a little work but I don't know what to do. (The head looks weird and left hand.) The overworlds hair also needs work but I just can't do it. |
Thanks, planning on using this soon to increase my terrible spriting skills xD

good tutorial. i was able to make this with the fusion tutorial
There are a few errant pixels on the outline of the head and need to be cleaned up, and it looks like you missed a shade in your recolor; notice the dark red/brown lines on your blue and black sprites. You should also try to make sure that the background leg looks like it's in relatively the same spot as the fore leg on that side of the body.

made this using your Amalgamation (or whatever) tutorial! Thanks a bunch! |
Is that your own version of a baby Tauros/Miltank? I like it!
All the tutorials so far are amazing. So simple and easy to use, yet still packed with more information than 80% of other tutorials out there. Keep it up!!
This is a very helpful tutorial! c: Thank you for sharing this with us.
Hey chesu, how are all the other tutorials coming along? I love these so far, but I'm still pretty poor at spiriting despite the many attempts I have tried. Nothing to do with your tutorials though, just I'm more of a scripter :)
Unfortunately, I just haven't had the time for it; I have two unfinished tutorials in the wings, and have for nearly two years now. I should probably try to make the time to get at least those done...
:( time is always hard to find I guess
Unless you're able to embed those in posts here on PC, I'm not going to be able to post them...
I don't know why you couldn't post links to the tutorials, but luckily PC has a youtube embed button... |
Thank you for the tutorials, comrade. I needed the refresher after being away from hacking for a few years.
It Was Great!!! Hope Theres More To Come!!!!!!!!!
Like the tutorials. Made me reconsider my style of stuff...

My first over-world, fully animated. Thanks for these amazing tutorials. |
wow a tutorial on how to sprite cool.......
but one question what do i use in editing and making sprites what site like adobe or corel draw or just painting.....? it would be a huge help for me if u can tell me im just a beginner and im wanting to make sprites...... |
I prefer the Windows XP version of MS Paint, but a lot of people like Paint.net.
thnx this really helped me. i've always tried figuring out how to make a sprite without it being a random generator or already been made and having to re-edit it.
These guides are great, I like the fact that they are very basic and easy to understand. I've learned a lot from them. Hope there's more to come. :)

Alright well I know the rules about not posting in a topic that hasn't seen some action in a month, but this is someone's Graphics thread and it might not be so easy to replicate, so I'll post. If it's against the rules, then just delete this lol.
Your guide was extremely helpful. Also it got me to use MS Pain which I probably never would have laid a finger on haha. So these are my very first MS attempts at spriting. I did two sprites in GIMP but the program can't draw circles and shapes properly (with a border instead of a fill). So here they are... |
Does that rule apply to stickied threads? Hmm... No idea. In any case I, the topic creator, have now posted, so it should be fine.
Your designs do need work, but this it a good starting point. I recommend playing around with the real Pokemon sprites, to get a feel for how they're shaped and shaded. You should try using the Amalgamon tutorial. |
How would I do this: If I had to make an original sprite of something bigger or smaller than the original sprite without making it go pixelated. This is for a ROM hack btw.
Unfortunately, due to the generally low resolution and importance of clarity in pixel art, sprites can be a little hard to resize. For a completely loss-free resizing of something, you generally have to resize it by full increments, i.e. 50% or 200%. The further from a full increment the resize is, the more it will distort. If you want to, say, shrink a Black/White sprite to work in a GBA rom, you will either have to resize it then go through and manually fix anything that looks wrong, or just draw the sprite from scratch at the required resolution.
Your tutorials helped me when I got into spriting, I was, before reading them, just horrid, now I'm almost actually okay. Anyways, I'm just saying thanks for the great tutorials.
Did you create an account just to say that? I hope to see posts from you with sprites in the future! :D

I've been reading all your tutorials for a good few months now, I love using them, they've helped me improve so much. Although I tend to look at other sprites for poses an shading references. |
Thank you! Now I can make a trainer avatar for PC!
This is a great tutorial! Very organized and shows many different techniques! I will forsure try spriting now!
Thanks for this! Just made this using your Pixel over tutorial!

Thanks for the tutorial!!
what tools or application u guys use to spriting or editing sprites?
Thanks great tutorial, understood where most others confused, Truly helped. :D
Keep in mind you require 4+ words for your posts here at PC as it is an official rule of the whole forum.
And personally I use Photoshop CS4, but some people use MS Paint or GraphicsGale (but this one is pretty rare here). |
A lot of people like paint.net, but I prefer Paint XP (a standalone version of the Windows XP version of Microsoft Paint) and Paint Shop Pro.
SIMPLI AMAZING:.....TNX................................................................................

This looks like one of the first of its kind... nice!

This is a great guide to get you started! Here's what is made:
I still think the head is too small if I compare it with other pokémon, but that might just be me. Let me know what you think! :D |
You should try to make some of the angles (notably on the hands and arms) a bit more natural; long straight lines don't really look organic. The perspective needs a little work as well, since currently the left arm looks significantly larger than the right one, when that body position wouldn't account for such a difference. You could also add some black to the outline, to make it look more solid.
Can you do the R/S/E overworld spriting tutorial? I am making a sprite for a fangame that uses that style, so it would be much appreciated.
