Buy the book, BAKA!!

Do you tend to buy your manga to read or do you read online or both?

I do both - some things are not licensed so its the only way to read them.
But to me, it is more fun to read the actual book rather than reading online.

thedestinedblade May 3rd, 2009 12:55 PM

Yes, reading online annoys me, which is why I don't read too many. Though I'd much rather read online and at least save a couple bucks. :/

Yingxue May 3rd, 2009 2:11 PM

There really is no good excuse not to buy the book, especially if it comes to the states. The Japanese tankoubans are about half the US book's MSRP price, so price is not a concern. If the US price is too high, there are places that sell them for a lot cheaper.

I am good at finding manga deals on eBay.

Taemin May 3rd, 2009 3:27 PM

I do both.

If I can buy them at the bookstore, I tend to not bother reading them online.

Really, I only read manga online that I can't find in-store, or series that haven't released in the USA yet.

An-chan May 3rd, 2009 3:38 PM

I search for new manga online. I read some of the first chapters and see what the manga is like. If I like it, I start searching for the books. It's just really hard to get your hands on manga here in Finland, because we only have a few specialist shops on the moment. Because there are only a few, they can monopolize the whole business, so we have to pay double the price you pay in the US. So, that's roughly four times as much as the Japanese tankobons. That pisses me off considerably, so I rather order my manga from online stores.

Anyway, I find the online manga share communities very handy when trying to find new series to follow. I've found many outstanding mangas like that, so I really, really am not against those communities.

Long story short: because it's hard for me to get the actual books or find something I like from the small variety of manga offered here, I often read online. I do prefer reading manga from a book and I do it as much as possible. However, expenses and various obstacles force me to read more online than from books. This is what you get in a small country... Luckily, the situation is slowly becoming better. Now I only hope the prices get down when the specialist shops have more competition.

I do all my manga-reading online. I just couldn't afford books. :'(

However, there are always that one Manga series that makes me buy it, but it doesn't happen a lot.

Azumi May 4th, 2009 7:40 AM

I usually read online. I got no money... *sobs*

I would wanna BUY a manga though. I mean, you don't have to keep on pressing the right arrow button! It loads as slow as a snail~!

Vie May 4th, 2009 7:42 AM

I read naruto online, but I'm happier with them standing in my shelf. I can read them everywhere I go and don't have to carry a laptop. I'd die without my mangas. the paper ones.

Ryoutarou May 4th, 2009 8:02 AM

I don't buy (or read) manga anymore these days, but when I did, I always bought them. I couldn't stand reading manga online, it seemed to take a bit of the fun out of actually holding the book and getting to see everything up close.

devilicious May 4th, 2009 9:18 AM

I always buy manga when possible~
I like collecting them, and it just feels better when reading.

But I do read some series online- the ones that haven't been licensed.

kohei May 4th, 2009 9:51 PM

Buy, borrow from club room at uni or go to a net cafe (since net cafes here pretty much functions as manga libraries.)

Lucy Lu May 5th, 2009 12:15 AM

I usually do both. I tend the read some manga online if it isn't available in book form. When it comes in book form, I will buy it. I much rather buy the book than reading online anyway. It just the feeling that if you want to read it again, you can just get the book and read. If online, maybe they won't have available. So it is best to buy manga as well. ^^

digi-kun May 6th, 2009 7:51 AM

I generally read online, but that's mostly cuz most, if not all my series haven't been brought over. Though when whatever series is brought over, i buy the volumes as they come out cuz it feels better for me to read it out of a book than on a computer. The one exception are most of the Jump manga cuz those last forever, and most of them aren't really good enough to warrant me buying 30+ volumes of manga. Of course, if one volume ends up particularly good, i still buy it though XD

Hagumi May 6th, 2009 7:58 AM

I mostly read online, due to the fact that most of the manga I read isn't out where I live or they don't have a certain volume of the manga that I'm reading. (I’m pretty impatient, so I can't really wait) I have bought a few manga books though, for some reason it makes me get all hyped up about starting a manga collection. But I mostly read online, whilst buying a few manga books here and there.

mewthree w/armor May 6th, 2009 9:21 AM

I am a nutjob crazy Anime downloader...but I buy all my Manga and don't read a lick online. Weird huh?

HoneyBubbles May 6th, 2009 11:57 AM

I do both. I agree, it's funner to read the manga in a book rather than online. I buy what I can.
But I do read a lot online, just because I like reading a lot of series that aren't licensed yet.

.inLOVE May 6th, 2009 11:58 AM

I usually just buy it, but on a good day I'll read some online.

Legobricks May 6th, 2009 4:58 PM

Download unless I actually can buy it.

OokamiShipper May 6th, 2009 5:10 PM

I read it online, but if I can find it, I'd buy the book...I think...maybe....>.>

ShinjisLover May 6th, 2009 6:36 PM

I always read the manga online if I can find it there. If I can't, I special order it.

Jack O'Neill May 6th, 2009 8:18 PM

Tú detenes matar del idioma japonés, puta.

That said, I don't bother seeking out manga online. I'd much rather buy a physical volume, mainly so I can read it at my own convenience.

Kura May 6th, 2009 8:49 PM

I like to read the actual book. You know.. even if it costs money, you end up supporting the author and artist.. so it's a good thing.

That and I like to actually have a hard copy of stuff.. I guess I'm like a pack-rat.. I need something physical of it or I'll get like an anxiety attack if I can't find it again..

Phanima May 7th, 2009 2:31 AM

In essence, reading the actual manga of any series in physical form is infinitely better than reading online. Scanlations should never be 100% trusted. That said, most of them do get the job done and admittedly, I read most of mine online. Of course, that's only because manga is so scarce around here and the few that do hit the shelves are $30-50 per volume.

So I tend to browse online shops if I'm planning to put down the cash to import it cheaper. Also, having an otaku cousin with money helps too. :D

Finnel May 7th, 2009 8:26 PM

I usually read online, but if I like what I'm reading enough and I'm not too far into the series, I go out and buy it.
Sometimes I read through it all online then still buy it if I really liked it.
