HG/SS - Increased use of Touch Screen

We know about the new games Heart Gold and Soul Silver.

With the recent scans, I think some of us have noticed that the use of the stylus is have got more important, which means that from the GBA games, in which all was compacted in one screen, now seems we'll be using more the stylus :/

In the NDS games we started with it, D/P/Pt made it more important, but HG/SS shows that the bag will be in the touch screen.

That means me should adecuate to the new system in going through the storyline, since from the 1st generation up to now the menu was always in the top screen.

What do you think of it? They should keep it like the previous games, or you consider it a good change.

Practical or a little too dependant on the touch screen?

Tuskin May 13th, 2009 2:13 PM

Maybe you'll be able to toggle it? I doubt it though.

"Shadow Lugia" May 13th, 2009 2:13 PM

It's another neat feature that makes use of the touch screen, nothing more IMO.

Lt_Nite May 13th, 2009 2:18 PM

Meh it's the same to me, I like using the touch screen for things so I think this will be just a more convenient way to getting into your bag.

Artemis May 13th, 2009 2:19 PM

Same here, Nintendo is taking advantage of what they built. I think it is a pretty nice feature and adds more to the game's design. It doesn't take away much originality from the older version so it doesn't bother me neither.

-I guess I'll need to start getting used to the touch screen more now...

Lady Gaga May 13th, 2009 2:22 PM

I Absolutly Love it. You will be able to access everything here, and with only one touch, start, scroll, A...i love it! They probably will also make like a Pokedex Button, and Pokegear button, and more :P

JP May 13th, 2009 2:23 PM

Too dependable on the touch screen? No. That's what it's there for, it's nice that Nintendo is making more use of it with the Pokemon games. I'm looking forward to it!

For all we know though, maybe we'll get both options (touch screen & x button)

Penumbra May 13th, 2009 2:36 PM

EDIT: Totally agree with Hiroshi. it WAS annoying switching between
the D-Pad and TS when we had to (Map Checker thingamabobber, I'm looking at you).
That's why I usually just stop completely and doodle with the touch screen as opposed to
running 1 step, touch screen, 1 step, touch screen, etc. I either completely use the
D-Pad to control stuff like the menu (the stupid spinning pokeball didn't help at all)
or stick with the TS. Make it so that we barely notice we're using two screens. I want
it to flow all together, not be two separate games T_T I wish they would do something
that COULDN'T be placed on a GBA Cartridge. Do something only the DS can do..

D/P - Poketch, Poffins,

Pt - Poketch, Poffins, Minigames
hG/sS - Menu, ????, ????

Maybe they'll reintroduce mini games in Wi-Fi (most likely)
or some sort of poffin alternate for contests. We WILL be using the
TS more frequently, but I still think the Poketch was a great idea for
utilizing the touch screen. After all, Game Freak wanted people to
stay focused on the top screen where the main adventure and
game is. They didn't want some TS gimmicks taking away from
the storyline or the battle system, so they just threw in some mini games
and stuff to distract us. The attack icons was an excellent idea,
along with the poketch. the Menu? Um.. we'll get used to it, but the
Poketch was way more fun. Also, the things that bug me is that
huge empty space beside the buttons (the blue rectangle on the right).
Also, it's kind of obvious, but there will be more buttons for the Pokedex
and PokeGear and stuff. A Better idea would be for the TS to show the
trainer's back (and animate it while the trainer walks/runs/bikes/surfs)
and once you touch a certain area of the bag, that section of items pops
open. ie: -touch the right pocket- TMs List pops open..

it's good and great. I'm not saying it's a bad idea or being too lenient on
the TS is bad.. After all, we want a DS Game, and not GBA w/ a second
screen, but I still think they could have done WAY more with the
touch screen. Hopefully something will surprise me and convince me
that this is the UPG. They pretty much killed off any chances of nostalgia
by the very few leaks we DO have of the game, so there's only so
many things to rely on now.. the Touch Screen features is one of them.
Don't disappoint us, Game Freak!

HeavyOctillery May 13th, 2009 2:37 PM

It's what the screen's there for, ain't it? I thought DPPt ALREADY used the touch screen for the bags & menu; I'm a little surprised. (I'm slightly embarassed to admit that I don't own a DS or D/P/Pt at the moment, so I have no idea on all the uses.....)

Tyrantrum May 13th, 2009 2:51 PM

(I just saw it on Serebii.)

I think I prefer it on the bottom screen more.

Percy Thrillington May 13th, 2009 2:56 PM

Sounds like a cool cat idea. The touch screen could have been used for a lot more than it was in D/P/P. Good to see the developers are broadening their horizons this time around.

CollinP May 13th, 2009 3:15 PM

i'm noticing on serebii the first news is of course HG/SS and it has a picture off the touch screen menu- does anyone else notice that it looks as if you can use the stylus (or press the "a" button) to "turn the page" to another feature?
http://www.serebii.net/index2.shtml
PS i'm glad they are taking more advantage of the touch screen

PokeMaster1 May 13th, 2009 3:19 PM

I preferred using the GBA type controls over the stylus, so to me this is just something to get used to, nothing more.

Rubber Ducky May 13th, 2009 3:23 PM

Needs moar touch screen

I never even bother to keep my stylus out in D/P.

Don't get what I mean? If you do, you'll know the name of the first-party development team.

Pokémon suffers from constantly switching between the touch screen (in battles) and functions that require the control pad all too frequently. It's really annoying, and I hope they fix it. Hell, the Pokétch didn't need to occupy the screen all the time, either.

I get what you're saying, and you make a clear and precise point as well. With the idea of them fixing the problem with the constant annoyance of having to switch between the touchscreen and control pad, I completely see where you are coming from and agree entirely. It got to the edge of my nerves having to deal with that while playing my DPPt.

You can always buy one in a store or through the internet that has them available.

-I'm pretty psyched for all the new touchscreen uses, as it'll add more into the game. Who knows what else they might do as more information is revealed as well.

Lukar May 13th, 2009 4:12 PM

Well, it'll help organizing items easier, atleast. Instead of having to hit select and then going through a list, you might just have to hold the stylus on an item for a sec, and then you can move it anywhere freely.

.inLOVE May 13th, 2009 4:14 PM

I'm actually quite excited about this. I barely ever get to use my stylus in the RPG series, so I'll actually make use of it!

Artemis May 13th, 2009 6:31 PM

I guess the B button will still be used for running like usual, and canceling things as well. Having the touchscreened used more is very nice, and I'm content they made this choice, it's more convenient too.

Zelda May 13th, 2009 6:40 PM

I have been used to the touch screen ever since I made poffins in Pokemon Pearl.

If they add a lot of touch screen features I wouldn't mind, but just not a whole bunch.

Artemis May 13th, 2009 6:44 PM

It already looks like they're using the touchscreen for many things, even the menu bar alogn with many other features.

Tulips And Clover May 13th, 2009 7:01 PM

Might as well, if you play it on a console that has a touch screen, use it.

Eggie Poo Poo May 13th, 2009 7:06 PM

No if they put the menu on the bottom screen that would make no sense, as that screen is for your Pokegear. You wouldn't have a bag app on your pokegear now would you? ^^

If it pops on the top screen, then its interesting but also pointless. Its just as easy to tap X, no? Same finger distance.

It's not a bad idea as it takes use of more things, makes handling everything in the game easier and more organized. Also, it is possible that they can allow you to transition from the PokeGear to the start menu.
