MMORPGs Virtual Marriage?

Okay...now this may seem odd, but This was something is was thinking about.

You know how in some RPGs (or most, I've only played the f2p ones) have a feature that allows you to get "Married" in game to another member? Yes, actual virtual marriage I know of a few games that have the feature:

-Runescape
-Shadowtale

and mable Maplestory (Don't remember, it's been a long time sense i've played that one.)

what are your opinions on this? Should they keep this feature in, implant it in other games? or just get rid of that feature all together?

I'm pretty much in-between these two sides.

Why am I inbetween these two sides? Well, it's actually because i seem to know a lot about games. I know people may lie about their gender on games..well at least on games where you CAN chose your gender. However, I also know it's a feature that is just susposed to be for fun.

First off,why it should be eliminated in my eyes: People simply lie about their gender. People do that on almost every single forum or game they sign up for. Now, I'm not saying that EVERYONE does do this, but a lot of people do. You really don't know the true identity of people in real life. (unless you live close to them) Someone who is a guy may chose to play as a female character and vice versa. You can't really trust people on the internet. Even if they try to prove their gender, they could just grab a random photo of someone who is their in-game gender and just send it to the other person via the game's PM system. I know for a fact that some people around here like mixing up their gender due to the gender bender emblem. that just shows you how untruthful people on the internet can be.

However, on the other side of things, It should stay, and maybe be put in all MMOs. It's just a feature the developers put in the game for fun. It adds excitement to the game. If you get married to someone in a certain game, you don't go find that person in real life and get married to them. (If you do, you need help.) It shouldn't matter whether or not the people playing the game are lying about their gender. It is just for fun.

So, you see? I'm kinda torn between both sides of this question.
but, what is your take on Virtual marriage (AKA MMORPG Marriage)

I think it is a fun feature. The only MMORPG I play currently is WoW which is lacking the option. Back when I played FFXI I got married to one of my friends that played, it just seemed like a cool little feature. Usually if you get married to someone in FFXI you have at least had voice chat with them with them before, or know if they made a character of the opposite sex. If random people are doing it perhaps it could be bad, especially if one is just tricking the other for favors and items and such. My girlfriend and I used to play WoW together a lot, and I always thought it would be fun to be married in game.

In short, I think it is a nice social addition to an MMO, and like most features has the ability to be abused and used for wrong but that doesn't mean it should be omitted.

I see what you are saying there, but what about games that don't have voice chat (Like some PC games...and browser MMOs?

And even if a game did have voice chat, how would you know whether or not they were using a voice-disiguising device. I don't think anyone would go THAT far...but you have to count the posibility.

Even if you don't have voice chat or any way of knowing if the person is really the gender they say they are... does it matter?

It's a game. It's not meant to be taken seriously and it's just a fictional marriage anyway. Just marry a friend because that means it's someone you enjoy spending time with and it makes it enjoyable. If said friend turns out to be opposite of the gender you thought they were... big deal. :(

Besides if they pulled the feature from most games, people would still RP relationships anyway which runs the same risk so I don't see how it'd be any different.

Not to be offensive to the OP, but you're paired with someone you claim you love over a forum, how is that any different to a relationship over a game?

This is a feature of runescape? Since when lol........ I know you ca have the fake marriages but theres no actual IN GAME marriages held by an NPC priest or anything its all player organized and all......

I play so many MMORPG games. I play ones with this feature and ones without and even in the ones without the feature people pair up and stuff like that. I have paired up with guys for a laugh and stuff. Although I have found people to take them to seriously. My best friend just went to America to meet a girl that he was married to on Perfect World. But I am pretty sure that would have happenedeven if that feature wasn't included as they talked every day over ventrilo.

Although some people take it to seriously I think the feature is fine. It adds a new element to the game and if they include the ability to be able to warp directly to where your partner is like they do on a few MMORPGs it helps for bossing to be done faster and also easier to form a party.

not to be rude to a mod, but..I've actually talk about this with my pair over at the other pokemon forum..which will remain nameless. She agrees with me that lying about your gender is wrong. Heck, I even got a letter via snail mail (my nickname for the mail the postman brings) and her handwriting proves it.....

However, with relationships in a game you can't really concertate on what you are talking about when there is quests, monsters to kill, etc, etc. forums don't have that additio, making it easier to talk.

Who really cares if there is no NPC priest? There is a church there right? Who cares if it is player organized or not? as far as I'm concerned, it's still in game marriage.

And? I could change my gender to female here and send a letter to my pair or a friend in my hand writing saying "I'm a girl!" How is that any more conclusive than someone saying so over a game?

So, I was born a boy and now live as a girl. My handwriting looks like any other girls handwriting (well, that's a biiig assumption ~ but it's femininely structured). Where's your proof, now?
