Seven-Day Seven-K

Introduction

NaNoWriMo is a writing challenge that takes place over the month of November. In it, participants have one month (thirty days, from midnight on the first to 11:59 PM on the thirtieth) to write at least fifty thousand words – a full-fledged novel. A few make it. Many others wipe out.

On that happy note, welcome to Seven-Day Seven-K, a PC challenge that's a bit shorter and a bit less brain-aneurism-inducing as a form of pumping us up for the bigger challenge in November. Here, rather than spend a month writing a whopping fifty thousand words, we spend one week writing seven thousand. That's only one thousand words a day for each day of the week.

How to Play

Each Seven-Day Seven-K challenge will start every other week (to give us some time to rest up after taking on a challenge) on Sunday. We'll have from midnight that Sunday to 11:59 PM on Saturday to write at least one thousand words for a Pokémon fanfic a day, but at 11:59 PM, it's pens down and chime in.

There's no entry fee, no need to sign up using a cute little entry form, nothing you need to do except come prepared with ideas for a Pokémon fanfiction.

The Details in Q&A Form
(Some questions borrowed from the NaNoWriMo FAQ because we're playing by the same rules.)

Q. Run that by me again.
A. Seven-Day Seven-K is a challenge that occurs every other week in which authors write a Pokémon fic that's at least seven thousand words within the timeframe of a week. It's a very laid-back challenge where speed is priority over quality (although we hope that you'd at least write coherently). Anything goes so long as you hit that word minimum.

Q. Why is it only for Pokémon fanfiction?
A. Because this is a Pokémon-only forum, and it's easier to index fics without branching into Other Writing. If you want a less lame excuse, sorry.

Q. What canon do I use?
A. Whatever you'd like, sweetheart. Any canon, any concept, whatever you want so long as it's about Pokémon and meets the other requirements I'm beating into your head.

Q. Are those times (midnight and 11:59 PM) our time or yours?
A. Yours. For the sake of your sanity, just use your own clock.

Q. Can I write with someone?
A. No, sorry.

Q. Will short stories be okay? Drabbles?
A. As long as you write seven thousand words and can bundle these seven thousand pieces together into one thread (because you're posting it as proof that you did it), sure, go for it.

Q. Can I plan?
A. Planning's fine. Starting early is not.

Q. Can I work on something I've already started?
A. No, sorry. If you want to do this legally, you'll need to start from complete scratch. The reason why is fairly simple. It's quantity over quality in this challenge, so rather than add crap to your existing work, you're better off working on something completely new.

Q. Can I go over the limit?
A. Sure! Seven thousand words is just the minimum. You're free to go well over that maximum if you'd like so long as you put your pen down at the right time.

Q. What if I don't finish the story at the end of the week but meet the minimum?
A. Post what you have and finish it later. So long as you can prove to us that you had seven thousand words within the time limit, it's okay if it's not finished yet.

Q. What are the prizes?
A. No prizes except an ego boost. This isn't a competition between authors.

Q. Do I have to post my fic at the end of the week?
A. Posting rules go as such. If you want us to verify that you have at least seven thousand words, post within the competition week (as in, before the end of Saturday) in your own thread with [7 Day] somewhere in the title. For example, if your fic is named "Cheese," title it like so:

"[7 Day] Cheese"

Getting back to the point, posting is also completely optional. If your work is so crappy that you can't handle it, you don't need to post it. It is, however, a good idea if you want to brag that you've beaten the challenge and would like to show off the result to the rest of the forum.

As an added bonus, all winners will be put in a special list at the end of this post/in the next post.

Q. What are the prompts for?
A. For those of you who can't think of what to write, one-word prompts will be posted in this thread to help get your brain jumping.

Q. What's the rest of this thread for?
A. Think of it as the FFL for participants. Talk about whatever you'd like. I really don't care. The mod might, so just keep it within the rules of the forum/PC and go wild.

Wait, isn't it Monday? XD Don't confuse the already half-asleep!

And yes, it's this coming Sunday (the 31st). I figure starting a day late would make people want to maul me.

Feign May 24th, 2009 10:20 PM

Or we could have started it at advantage to our already tired minds XD (jk), though just imagine what would come out of that:

Then Bob sought a Pokemon battle with George, and Bob won fast, then they went to the store to buy ice cream, and instead had another pokemon battle, where Bob beat him again, but that is okay, because Bob is a good trainer, so they ate their ice cream and had another pokemon battle, Bob beat George once again, this time though they decided to race each other to see who could run the fastest, and while running Bob got hit by a backing truck, and died.

^gl?

Appearntly it is monday.

Ahhh, you'll never reach 7000 words with writing that simple! Elaborate, elaborate, elaborate! That's how you get to 7k. Observe!

Then the wonderful and absolutely amazing trainer who is really named Robert Martin Johnson Bojangles (the Martin was his father's name and the Johnson was his mother's father's name and the Bojangles came from only Arceus knows where) but who likes to go by the name of Bob sought a challenging and very exciting Pokemon battle with George, who has an equally exciting name but who did not wish to share it with Bob because George had a deep and dark secret, and Bob won fast because he had a Pikachu which could beat George's Goldeen and he had a Charizard which could beet Geroge's Chikorita and he had a Magikarp who you think would do nothing but it was actually level 100 so it easily beat George's level 7 Pidgey because even the lamest Pokémon can win if it has Tackle and you EV train it like heck in Attack, then they went to the store to buy ice cream because ice cream is tasty and Bob wanted chocolate double dip brick road extra chocolate with sprinkles and George wanted cherry jubilee with three extra scoops of whip cream and five cherries but not four or six and seven would be too many, and instead had another pokemon battle because they agreed that another Pokémon battle would be a good idea so they had another one for this reason, where Bob beat him again just like he beat him the first time and he pretty much used the same strategy, but that is okay, because Bob is a good trainer due to the fact that he managed to get a level 100 Magikarp so you know he has to be pretty good, so they ate their ice cream that they bought earlier that was a chocolate double dip brick road extra chocolate with sprinkles and a cherry jubilee with three extra scoops of whip cream and five cherries but not four or six or seven and had another pokemon battle making this the third battle that they had had so far and one very similar to the first two, Bob beat George once again because Bob beat George twice already and by now their Pokémon were pretty tired, this time though they decided to race each other to see who could run the fastest because George realized that he was never going to win at Pokémon and this depressed him greatly so he decided to vent his depression by doing something he knew he was good at because his true name was George Georgiovanni Von Truck Smacker and he never lost a race because the Von Truck Smacker family never lost a race when they were running because they were very good at races that involved running, and while running Bob got hit by a backing truck just like all of the other racing rivals of the Von Truck Smacker racing family got hit, which was a big coincidence, and died a slow and painful and slow and slow death that was also slow and painful but not before he had time to will his Magikarp to George and tell his Pikachu which was strong and his Charizard which was also strong to avenge his death.

... I've done NaNoWriMo before. I know all the strategies for upping your word count. XD All this block of text needs now is a dream sequence. And a long argument that goes "Yes!" "No!" "Yes!" "No!" "Yes!" "No!"

[/nano-inside-jokes] Seriously, though, this looks like a great idea. At the least, I could use this as motivation to make some serious progress on the fic that I'd planned on finishing weeks ago, even if it wouldn't be a "legal" entry into the 7Day7K.

Swift! May 25th, 2009 7:27 PM

I might give this a go. Probably not the first one, but... eventually.

Have you heard the one where you use the search feature to replace every instance of the word "the" with the phrase "the damn"? Sure, it's cheap, but you'll complete the challenge quickly and colorfully.

Also, when all else fails, zombies.

[/adding to nano jokes]

Thanks. =D I hope it's successful.

Also, you've reminded me about the rule in NaNo that says to legally do it, it's got to be fresh, rather than something you're working on. Should I add that in, or is it implied enough with the answer to the planning question?

ShinjisLover May 25th, 2009 8:19 PM

Coolio, I'd love to try this out! =3 Though, that fall I had has my brains scrambled, but I'm sure I can think of something. XD

Feign May 25th, 2009 8:26 PM

Yeah you probably should add it in, I have two ideas in the back of my head for fics, but don't want to use it for this.

Misheard Whisper May 25th, 2009 10:08 PM

Wow! Bring it on, people. This sounds like great fun. I might even have a look at the NaNoWriMo or whatever it was, too...probably bomb out though.

An-chan May 26th, 2009 12:23 PM

GENIUS. I know I'll fail seven thousand times, but I still want to join. I tried NaNo, but that didn't work out so well, being November and all. This Sunday is very convenient anyway, because my VACATION STAAAAAARTS!!!! *vacation dance* And only a month left before I go to Japan, and I'm going to need something to take my mind off it so that I don't explode. I'm seriously as enthusiasted as a five-year-old is about going to the pool...

I'm very excited about this, too. I'm loving the idea! Can I tag my threads [7-Day], though, or is it grammatically wrong? I'm not so sure about English compounds, but I hate it when Finnish kids write Finnish compounds wrog. Thus, it pains me to write [7 Day]. *ahhhh it burns!* Unless I know it's the only correct way, that is? How's it?

Sometimes it pisses me off to be so out of this language.

Haha, yeah, that's the problem I have annually too. XD If it was June, I'd be perfectly fine with it, but no, it just has to be November, aka Paper Season.

Sure, go ahead. So long as it has 7 and Day in it somewhere, I don't mind.

Blue Screen of Death May 26th, 2009 4:25 PM

Sweet, this sounds like lots o' fun! Not to mention the first (and only) prompt. If you can't come up with something good with fire, then you either are having a very slow day, or are not very creative.

My only concern is that I might have a slow start because the first three days of this are my last three days. Then again, that might work the other way, seeing as its the last three days and we won't be doing much.

Oh, and one more thing. The ultimate idea for this week: "Furrets with flamethrowers!"

ckret2 May 26th, 2009 5:19 PM

"Hah! There's absolutely NOTHING between Elm's lab and the first Gym that possibly poses a threat to my awesome new Chikorita! The Bug-types are lame, the Flying-types are lame, and all that's left are a bunch of pitiful Sentret. What can they possibly do to my Chikor... HOLY--!!"

The wide-open prompt is a great idea. (Since I'll just be using 7Day7k to work on the fic I'm in the middle of, though, I won't be using the prompt. Maybe the next week, when I can do 7Day7k "officially.")

Feign May 26th, 2009 9:05 PM

Oi, I just realized, lol... My vacation starts on the 5th and I work 5 days in a row leading up to it, so I'll do what I can XD

Lana. May 27th, 2009 12:44 PM

Perfect! I'm doing anything that week. And 'Fire' is a great prompt...

I'm so excited. This will be a great way to kick off the summer...

Shrike Flamestar May 27th, 2009 1:24 PM

While fire is indeed a nice prompt, we don't have to follow it, right? I was thinking of trying my hand at a dark fic sort of thing, probably one with lots of blood. <_< Fire might still be involved, but not the main focus.

Hmm, I'm already getting a lot of ideas for it. It'll probably be pretty generic, I'm thinking a sort of haunted house scenario, but I need to test the waters somehow. Any rating is fine, right? Including R? :D

Lol yeah, mine is going to be at least 17+. Watching some movies recently has given me some ideas >.>

Right. Prompts are completely optional.

Sure, any rating you'd like.

rmmstnr May 28th, 2009 11:00 PM

Ooh, this seems like a great way to spawn some creativity, I'll have to give it a go. Good thing you mentioned the quantity over quality bit, if you thought my writing's poor now, wait till you add a deadline Xp!

Misheard Whisper May 29th, 2009 12:28 PM

Ah, dammit, I may not be able to participate this week, Tuesday is completely out. Monday is a public holiday, though, so maybe I can do two days' worth? We'll see.

ckret2 May 31st, 2009 11:21 AM

So it's starting today, is it?

Awesome. I'll be participating unofficially. I'm using 7Day7K to work on a fic I've had going for a couple months now. Would it be appropriate to post daily wordcounts in this thread, do you think, so everyone can see how everyone's doing?

Hey, here's an idea: what if each participant is allowed to post an excerpt here of a paragraph or sentence or so each day that they're most proud of? Kind of a way to keep this thread active, even when we're all busily at work on our fics. (And NaNo just adores its "post your favorite/first/last/fanciest/silliest sentence here" threads.)

Feign May 31st, 2009 4:39 PM

I'll start mine tonight (midnight), but I'll have till thursday night to post it, cause I'll be out vacationing.

If I don't finish before I leave, I'll attempt to end a chapter, and post what I have as a regular fic I think.

Actually, for the sake of my sanity (lol at 9-5 shifts for the rest of the week, before I get to go), I'll drop out of this, until perhaps I come back.

I like both ideas, and you're certainly free to do so if you'd like. Or, if you'd rather be sneaky-ninja and not post a thing until you're finished, that's cool too.

In the meantime, I'm at the 5200 mark, and I'm trying to finish before I go to sleep tonight. Why? Because I fail, and tomorrow, I'm going away for a week. So, uh, no prompt until I get back, and I -- much to irony's lulz -- will not be able to be around for the rest of the seven-day stretch. So, I'm leaving it up to the rest of you to throw live hedgehogs at whoever tries to cheat.

And if I actually fail the challenge, I might finish this thing and post it anyway. I kinda like it.

Venia Silente June 4th, 2009 7:39 PM

Certainly it seems quite a very interesting idea, and I am stressing out that with repetitive and figurative iterations of all too similar patterns of speech.

I've just hit the 800 words mark. Yeah, that's eight hundred. I had completely forgotten this challenge till Tuesday, so I'm trying to tackle things up for as long as I can expecting that by tomorrow I'll be able to decide wether this work goes in the challenge or not. I'm not even wondering about spellchecking (only grammar, to the best of my ability), word count or plot correctness, although this is an idea I've had roaming in my head for a while.

So if this doesn't make to the challenge, I'm still posting it, it will just take a lot longer...

Here's an excerpt of what I've done so far:
Spoiler:

I've been spending my days musing about the images I see in my dreams. I guess there was a time when my kind would have gathered together and marched out of the seas to the territory of the four-legged, and they would have gathered too at the sandy battlefield where their cries of “invader” would give way to the bolts and the bursts, and those would give way then to the endless riot of our kind as we marched as one giant wave to take the blood of the four-legged ones as compensation for their offense.

If it was not because I know I am alone, I would swear the meatfest every night was real...

Such a delightful activity of remembrance is sparingly interrupted, when the human called Trainer sits by my side and starts talking about things I don't understand. Beyond his battle instructions, pretty much nothing he says makes sense to me - I think, actually, that unlike the others, I am not event meant to understand the words of these creatures called human to begin with. But from what his assigned Pokémon has told me, he essentially tries to explain the world to me. He says a word that I don't know, like “snow”, and then proceeds to talk at length about what it is, or what does it taste like, and what does his species use it for, all the while probably believing he is actually explaining himself; although maybe it's better that way, because when he made one of his Pokémon, the white goofy one with stupid whiskers and no claws, produce that thing called snow, it was only an all white, somewhat clingy and, for the worst, chilly substance that would melt into water if Trainer held some of it in his hand. I did not like it.

What do you think?

I would like to see glimpses of what other people are succeeding to do.

Shrike Flamestar June 4th, 2009 8:31 PM

Hmm, it's hard for me to pick out any one part of my story that I'd like to share. It's at the 5k mark now and so far I'm liking all of it. As I was planning it is indeed a splatter horror fic, tentatively titled "Haunting at the Old Chateau." In all likelihood it won't be finished by the end of Saturday, but it will no doubt be at least the needed 7k by then. I was thinking of finishing it up for the next challenge but I'm not sure that'd be allowed and don't think there'd be enough left for another 7k anyway. So, I'll probably just finish it up on my own time.

Well, I guess this excerpt will do as well as any. It's not directly very gruesome, but from it you should be able to tell just why I have decided to classify this as not just a horror fic, but a splatter horror fic. ;)

Spoiler:
From the shadows in a corner of the courtyard, a green aura suddenly appeared as a lawn mower slowly rolled forward on its own power, its front gaping open where some of the metal chassis and casing had broken away as if it were a mouth eager to feed. Inside the opening was the lawn mower's blade, spinning about fast enough that it could barely be seen as it cut through the long grass, rolling towards its target. Aghast and in disbelief, Christine realized that it was moving straight towards where Staravia now lay tied against the ground by the vines, the bird letting out a shrill cry as he tried to free himself, noticing the approaching lawn mower.

Not wanting to see another friend die, Monferno, Luxio, and even Buneary joined together again to try to fight back the lawn mower, choosing to attack it this time instead of the rapidly regrowing vines. Not wanting to stand and watch without acting again, Riolu sprinted forward, leaping over the bound bird and spinning through the air as she sailed at the approaching mower. Drawing a palm back, she concentrated as she approached the possessed machine, knowing that the timing had to be just right for the force palm attack to be effective.

Before the virtually flying Riolu could reach her target, however, she was pulled out of the air by a shadowy black tendril that spun the dog-like Pokémon about as if it were a toy. The tendril suddenly let Riolu go, sending her straight at Christine. The Pokémon impacted the girl square in the chest, knocking the trainer back as she closed her arms around the small Riolu. Regaining her senses, Christine stood back up as she cradled Riolu, who had been knocked unconscious from the throw. After ensuring that her Pokémon was safe, Christine looked up to see the same inky black apparition that had prevented Luxio from saving Buizel. Its tendrils swung through the air as if they had a mind of their own, spinning about the shadowed body at the apparition's core. Another cackle as before joined the voices in Christine's head as the apparition floated backwards, fading into the shadows the lawn mower had emerged from and disappearing.

On a more technical note, I think the style I'm writing this in is worth a mention. I'm using one of my lesser used styles for this, one which has only ever before been used for those fics inappropriate for this site which I hitn at all the time. The defining aspect for me is the utter lack of dialogue; any actual, spoken dialogue is at most one or two words max. Anything longer is just described and basically skipped over, such as in this other single sentence excerpt from the work in progress:

"Landing on bent knees to absorb the impact, she looked back up at the top of the shaft and gestured for her Pokémon to follow, yelling that she'd catch them."

To me, this style is best used for fics where the actual dialogue isn't important and where the driving factor is the interaction between the characters and forces at play in the story, which is basically why this is the first time it's been used outside of those other fics. By virtually eliminating dialogue it allows me to focus purely on description and developing the setting and imagery that is so much more important in these stories. Regardless of my reasons for using it, I certainly find it interesting and am curious what the more...literate people here will think of it. This is why I wish I could just post my other stuff here; it's some of my best and most unique work but no one where I post it can take it that seriously. Really, it isn't porn but it's still kinky fetish stuff that I'm sure wouldn't be allowed here... This story will probably be about as close as I'll ever get.

...I should bring this up in the lounge sometime. Surely I'm not the only one with secret work that can't be posted here. <_<

An-chan June 5th, 2009 7:08 AM

My word count is currently 2555 words. That's a nice number, so I decided to post it before I write more. I'm running a bit late with this, since I started on Tuesday and so forth. Also, my family has bought five seasons of the TV show Scrubs, and I love it and simply can't stop watching it. But anyway, I'm still doing pretty good and I believe I can finish this before midnight on Sunday.

To make things harder, I kind of decided that I want to write exactly 7000 words... Well, we'll see if I end up actually doing so or not.

My work currently looks like it's going to end up being a mystery fic with some comical themes. The plot's still trying to take its shape, but it changes constantly while I write, so I can't really say what's going to happen yet. I'm really liking it on the moment, though. Writing mystery is really fun, I think I should start writing my actual mystery fic soon... Anyway, here are my favourite excerpts:

Spoiler:
The mention of his last name snapped Rodney out of his thoughts. "I don't like to be called by my last name, Lorraine," he told her with a strict tone. The woman looked at him, and Rodney noticed she was very, very angry. "Uh, you're not Lorraine, are you?" He asked.

"What?! Of course I'm Lorraine! Didn't you- What were you- What's wrong with you?!" she was screaming from the top of her lungs and her face was alarmingly red. "Tell me, Russell, how did you ever reach your current position?"

Rodney opened his mouth to arrogantly tell Lorraine exactly how he did reach his current position, when realization hit him. He closed his mouth and opened it again, and all the colour left his face, making him look like he was from a black-and-white picture. He shrunk noticeably and large drops of sweat started appearing on his face.

"W-well," Lorraine asked cautiously. Her anger really suffered from his reaction, as she started to feel sorry for him. "Spit it out, Russell."

Rodney gulped. "I don't know," he whispered barely audibly.

Spoiler:
"Fire?"

"Fire, you jackass! The forest fire, remeber?"

"Oh, right! We should probably do something about it, huh?"

"Yes, please!"

ShinjisLover June 6th, 2009 3:05 PM

Looks like I'm going to have to drop out of this for this week. I hardly got anything done. And I curse my procrastination. . >.> Ah, well, better luck next time.

Shrike Flamestar June 6th, 2009 4:02 PM

I actually got up to 8k and am in the process of proofreading it. I wanted to make some adjustments to the ending but I'll have to wait and see now if I have the time. If not, oh well.

Venia Silente June 6th, 2009 5:15 PM

Heh, I've been trying to get away from the 3,000 mark for the entirely of the day. I do not intend to drop yet, let's see if my muse cat decides to stop complaining about the cold and helps me with some ideas for the ~4,000 extra words I need.

Grexx June 6th, 2009 7:02 PM

7k? That's it? I've already written a over 100,000 worded fanfic, and I wrote a 3k one-shot in one day. 7k is nothing, I'm definately joining the next game.

Shrike Flamestar June 6th, 2009 8:04 PM

There we go, it is done. My entry has been written, proofread, and posted right here, one hour before the deadline (going by US central time). It's certainly one of the more interesting things I've ever written, and one of the most violent as well... Ah, I'm just too sadistic.

That was a fun challenge. I may join the next one, I may not. I've got to get the final part of this story done plus I have my chaptered fics to do, so we'll see. I don't even know what I'd write about; this was something I'd been considering writing for a while...

Venia Silente June 6th, 2009 8:16 PM

Then I failed miserably, only 3200 words written. :(

However, I don't consider this a failure. This small adventure allowed me to sort out and put on paper ODT several ridiculous ideas that were freely roaming in my head. I feel a little bit more confident now that I can keep my ideas under control and pace myself to translate them into something readable.

Here a last excerpt of my work then I'm still going to publish it, only later.

Spoiler:

Eventually I was allowed into a water chamber, where I could crawl and eat as I wanted, and sometimes emerge across a slope, out of the water, to enjoy sunlight. One day another Pokémon was introduced in the chamber, and when I saw her for the first time I almost gasped. I was sure this long, serpentine creature of blue and white scales and a massive mouth was commanding and powerful, and I knew somehow that she was supposed to be a sister in arms... I just couldn't remember what war it was, or if there was a war any longer. Also one particular thing that was out of place was that she was supposed to be smaller, bulkier, more fish-like, and red to begin with.

The other Pokémon introduced herself as Gyarados, and she told me my name, which I had heard from the human before. I did not like the idea that she (or maybe the human) had chosen my name instead of me, but given that I did not know how was I supposed to be named, with my parents nowhere to be seen, I decided to take the name.

Then she told me one more thing, and I instantly understood I was in the wrong place:

I belonged to the human now.

I'll of course join the next challenge.

The reason why it's only 7k is because of NaNoWriMo. While it's cool that you can do more, NaNo's minimum count is 50k words in thirty days. That comes out to about 1667 words each day, which in a seven-day period is technically 11k+ words. But I decided to round down and make it 1k a day to be nice. I could round up and make it 12k in a week, but that just doesn't roll off the tongue as easily.

Incidentally, the prompt will be up sometime soon.

Bay June 14th, 2009 3:55 PM

Haha, I love this week's prompt. Maybe this will get me to writing The Last Rocket, which is about a Rocket making many mistakes and looking for redemption and all. ;)

ANARCHit3cht June 19th, 2009 8:46 PM

Damn, I missed this. Well, gotta wait for the next one. I hate waiting.

JX Valentine June 19th, 2009 9:00 PM

Yeah, I know what you mean. I really intended on writing something this week. In fact, I have yet another half-finished one. But unfortunately, this week has been mostly taken up by a combination of my job and betaing a 20+-page piece. ;_;

Ah well. Next round should be good. I'll be settled down, and boot to the head to any other distractions.

ANARCHit3cht June 19th, 2009 9:11 PM

Meh, it still would take me forever to think of a good thing

JX Valentine June 19th, 2009 9:31 PM

Aww, don't worry. It's really not that difficult to come up with something. The majority of the challenge is an exercise in putting down whatever crap pops into your mind first and nudging it until it becomes a coherent story. Or, uh, leaving it as-is if you want to pass it off as avant-garde.

ANARCHit3cht June 19th, 2009 9:39 PM

I can really think of ideas, yes, but as I develop them, they are all wrong. But, I have just been struck with inspiration for a story

Misheard Whisper June 19th, 2009 9:42 PM

I think I'll participate in the next one. When does it start? *goes off to check first post*

Shrike Flamestar June 19th, 2009 9:48 PM

If you just want to write, don't worry about developing the ideas to much. Take your initial concept and run with it; let the plot and details develop themselves as you write, letting them mold to your writing instead of vice versa. Don't hold back just because you can't pre-plan every single detail of the story. Planning always helps, but it shouldn't prevent you from writing in the first place. Besides, keep in mind that there's still one week before the next challenge starts and you're fully allowed to plan during this time, so long as you don't start writing.

As for me, as I said in the lounge these past weeks have been rather bad for me and I wasn't able to really write anything. I wasn't planning on taking part this week anyway. <_< Hopefully there's more than one winner this week, and since I couldn't enter hopefully there's a winner at all. :D Don't know if I'll be participating next time either; I may very well be wanting to work on TFC and TRINITY instead...

The next one starts after a one week break unless anything changed, which would mean June 28th.

Bay June 19th, 2009 10:14 PM

I'm also a bit behind on my challenge too. Been busy with real life stuff and also relatives visiting. However, I think if I'm able to some work tonight and tomorrow morning, I'll be able to finish this challenge. :)

Here, have an except:

Spoiler:
Redemption.

Yes, that was it. He wanted redemption, and Ho-Oh gave him a chance to do so. Randy smirked and had his face turned to look at his Qualivia, still in his battle stance and the flames burning more brightly.

“Okay, Clannad, go for Flamewheel!”

Clannad let out his war cry and his body was covered in flames. After curled up into a ball, he rolled at a ridiculously fast speed, as if a Dophan was doing Rollout. The man that stole the potions turned around and gasped when he saw Clannad gaining speed. He turned around to a new direction, but the fire type was able to still follow him. Soon Clannad hit the man’s leg like a bowling ball hitting all nine pins and he fell on the ground. When the crowd saw that, they cheered.

“Great job, buddy!” Randy congratulated with a jump and right fist up in the air.

Realizing his pants were burning, the man got up immediately, took them off, and stomp on them. His face became red in embarrassment though when he realized the crowd was laughing at him.

“Nice Voltorb boxers you have there!” one of the men complimented. The man’s face became even redder.

Voltorb boxers. :3

EDIT: And done! :D The one shot is not finished yet, but whatever. XD

Two weeks from now. As in, pretty much, not this coming Sunday but the Sunday after. (Which would be July 5.) I'll put it up on the first post once I think of a prompt (that isn't cracktastic, although I'm heavily, heavily tempted).

{Swan} June 21st, 2009 3:34 PM

And are we allowed to post chapters within the week or do we have to post it all at once before the saturday.
And does it have to be newly started or could we build to an already existent story with 7000 more words?

ANARCHit3cht June 21st, 2009 3:41 PM

I would have to say that is has to be new. As that is pretty much the point of the contest.

Feign June 21st, 2009 6:00 PM

Maybe if I become creative in the next two weeks I'll try to rejoin, as the only thing that will be holding be back now is work, nothing else.

But I would also like to continue my story that I posted earlier.

Misheard Whisper June 26th, 2009 8:38 PM

So is there one starting the Monday coming?

JX Valentine June 26th, 2009 8:54 PM

Sunday. (Ignore my comment about it being July 5, and the day isn't dependent on time zones. Basically, whenever it's Sunday at midnight, it's the start of the next round.) Sorry I haven't gotten a prompt up yet. I know I should have done so earlier to give you guys time to think about it, but I've been busy this week. It'll be up tomorrow morning.

ANARCHit3cht June 26th, 2009 8:56 PM

I'll most definitely be joining this one.

{Swan} June 26th, 2009 9:03 PM

So is it Sunday night and Monday morning, or Saturday night and Sunday morning? xD

And do you post everything in the end or are you allowed to post chapters during the week?

Feign June 26th, 2009 9:04 PM

Hmmm now I don't have an idea what I want to write about XD

What this makes no sense.

And people post bits of their work, so I think it would be ok to post bits of yours.

12:00/01 AM Sunday morning. (Yes, I know days technically begin at 12:01, but it's still pretty much midnight.) As in, you have the entire day of Sunday to begin. Otherwise, it's not really seven days long.

Quote:

As long as you have all seven thousand words posted by 11:59 PM on Saturday, go for it any way you like.

Also, the new prompt is up. Good luck, guys.

ANARCHit3cht June 27th, 2009 3:06 PM

Sadly I don't really understand the prompt.

But, I think have an idea.

¡Chucho! June 27th, 2009 3:16 PM

Can I use an idea that I've already started before if I write from scratch?

ANARCHit3cht June 27th, 2009 3:24 PM

Yes, this idea shall be grand, but it might be a little common.

Chucho, if it is from scratch it shouldn't matter, but refer to the first page if you need another answer.

Misheard Whisper June 27th, 2009 4:00 PM

Boil? what is this i dont even.

I'll think of something. Count me in; this may help me find my muse.

ANARCHit3cht June 27th, 2009 7:01 PM

I might have to sit this one out, my mental state hasn't been the best, and well, the prompt boil has me in a deadlock.

Shrike Flamestar June 27th, 2009 7:13 PM

Keep in mind that you don't have to follow the prompt, it's just a suggestion. I certainly didn't have fire in mind when I wrote my entry for the first week, although I did end up putting fire in one part.

If you do want to follow it, keep in mind the different definitions. There's boiling as in a liquid changing to a gas state, boiling as an "boiling with anger," boils as in the nasty skin inflammation, boiling as in a way to prepare food, the food itself after being boiled, and so on.

As for this prompt, you're a girl after my own heart, aren't you Val? I could have so much fun with "boil" but unfortunately I'm still not ready to enter again.

Shrike's on the money here. The prompt is really more for those of us who have complete writer's block and/or want to play this game like it was the FFC we used to have around here. Shortly put, the prompt is actually optional; it's not at all required to follow it. In fact, if you're working with another prompt set (like from an LJ challenge comm) and would rather run through a week or two with it instead, by all means, go for it.

But yeah, don't be intimidated by the fact that the prompt for this week is "boil." It's just there for the ones who would otherwise write about zombie love... atop a cherry sundae dripping with melancholy chocolate. Because anything to get to that seven-thousand mark helps. (So does, if anyone's curious, slight carbon monoxide poisoning.)

¡Chucho! June 28th, 2009 2:10 PM

If I decide to write a script, do I write 3 pages a day, or 1000 words a day?

Daily word counts are completely up to the writer, regardless of the style they're using, so long as the total equals at least seven thousand words.

Also, as another heads up (which you probably already know about, but I'm just restating for the sake of doing my duty to discourage people from enticing Asty to go on a bloody rampage through the forum), remember to read the forum rules concerning scripts.

¡Chucho! June 28th, 2009 6:05 PM

I don't think it's well written, but it's more than dialog.

It's just that Script Frenzy is 100 pages instead of 50k words. That's all.

Yeah, it is, but I figured it'd just be simpler to keep the rules down to pretty much a word count. Alternatively, I could go with keeping it prose (short stories or chaptered fics) only, but I'd like to see how you do with writing a script for it first before deciding.

¡Chucho! June 28th, 2009 9:58 PM

Well, I work at a snail's pace, so I'm not going to be accurate. xD

ANARCHit3cht June 28th, 2009 10:04 PM

Ima sit this one out... I got no ideas, Im just gonna get an idea for next time.

Misheard Whisper June 28th, 2009 10:08 PM

Currently sitting at 3185 words after one days' work. Sitting down to write some more now. The further ahead of this I am, the happier I'll be! The prompt will feature, but you'll have to read carefully in order to get it!

{Swan} June 28th, 2009 10:18 PM

I'm down to 712 words. This really sin't so hard. I worked all day so I couldn't really start writing until late though..

Misheard Whisper June 28th, 2009 10:21 PM

Is that 712 done, or 712 left? ^_^ i is confoosed.

EDIT: Done, and posted here! Fun fun fun.

JX Valentine July 5th, 2009 7:09 AM

Aaaaand time! Congrats to Sparkling Dragon for this week. Sorry to Dutchesse, but your fic fell roughly 1000 words short before the deadline. It's still good, though, and if you'd like to finish it, go for it.

Also, the new prompt is up on time this week. I decided to be cheesy.

Not if you're braindead from repeated blunt trauma to the head, sweetheart. Am I going to have to clean up someone else's blood and brains on those lovely desks again?

Misheard Whisper July 5th, 2009 11:57 AM

It's alright. I'm actually in bed right now, so headdesking doesn't hurt as much as it normally would.

txteclipse July 5th, 2009 12:26 PM

Tribute, eh? Well. Umm. Aha! Oh wait, no, I started writing that already...

Ah well. I'm still joining this week, I think.

Misheard Whisper July 5th, 2009 9:26 PM

Regrettably, I'm afraid I cannot have as much fun as I thought I would be able to with this wonderful prompt. I've just realised I have two chaptered fics on the go! I'll have to wait.

This is totally not my excuse for why I haven't participated in my own writing challenge for the first three rounds.

Which is to say, totally okay. Wilt thou be participating in future rounds?

Misheard Whisper July 5th, 2009 9:35 PM

Absolutely. It's just that these next couple of weeks, I have holidays, so I'm gonna do as much chapter-writing as I can. After that, I'm slowing down to one chapter a week due to school. I should be able to do a 7K fic and a 3K chapter in one week, easy. All 7day entries will now be tie-ins to Shattered or Spliced, mostly Shattered. So don't worry, I'm still in.

JX Valentine July 12th, 2009 6:14 AM

As a reminder to everyone, the 7 Day, 7 K challenge begins today. Get crackin'!

I might actually participate this week. But then again, I say that every week and fail miserably. But I have ideas this time!

.Ozymandias July 12th, 2009 7:33 AM

I am going to give it a go. Can't promise anything spectacular, but I think this could be fun!

JX Valentine July 20th, 2009 4:19 PM

Oh dear. No entries this week. ._.

In any case, the first post has been updated with the latest prompt, done in honor of a certain fortieth anniversary.

Misheard Whisper July 20th, 2009 8:43 PM

I'm missing what the 40th anniversary is for. I'm sure the moon's been around longer than 40 years, and I'm fairly certain Sailor Moon has been around for less. What gives?

Actually, never mind. I'm just slow, and non-American. I get it now. Duh.

It's okay. I didn't realize non-Americans might not have been taught about that. XD; Sorry.

Misheard Whisper July 20th, 2009 9:13 PM

No, I knew all about it. We just don't place so much of an emphasis on it over here.

Actually, I lied when I said I knew all about it. What was the name of the craft? Was it Apollo 11, 13, or 16? ^_^; My modern history is awful.

JX Valentine July 21st, 2009 5:21 AM

Apollo 11. Don't worry. I don't think too many Americans know that either. XD

Feign July 21st, 2009 7:33 AM

I remember getting taught about the 50 states and their respective capitals. We even learned some American history, as also some of it would have intertwined with our country's history.

Misheard Whisper July 21st, 2009 10:07 AM

Weird . . . I went to Washington, DC, and our tour guide asked us if anybody knew what the four (or five, or six, don't remember) previous capitals of the U.S. were. On a bus full of Americans, with maybe a Canadian or two, and me, our combined knowledge was only enough to guess two.

Feign July 21st, 2009 10:21 AM

Philadelphia was one I believe, I'd like to guess Boston, but that might be up in the air. The rest I can't remember.

Anyway, to stay on topic: I might write something later, though I have come up with an idea (not necessarily for the 7k thing though).

Misheard Whisper July 21st, 2009 10:27 AM

I do believe Annapolis was one as well.

I have some good ideas for 'Moon'. I may well actually use the prompt on this one.

Vigilante July 21st, 2009 10:44 AM

I -MIGHT- participate in this one.

.Ozymandias July 21st, 2009 11:51 AM

I failed. I have deleted it, and will be writing something new for the next prompt.

JX Valentine July 21st, 2009 3:15 PM

You're right about Boston being the capital of Massachusetts, though.

Incidentally, congratulations, guys. You've given me ideas for the next prompt.

For this one, however, I'm going to attempt it, and by God, I might actually do it this time.

Misheard Whisper July 21st, 2009 8:56 PM

*shock*

Jax is going to participate in her own competition? what is this, week 4? Well.

I have a sneaky feeling that this will be the first week we have more than one winner. And I meant capitals of the actual country.

Whoops. Misread that. In that case, yeah, Philadelphia was one. Annapolis either before or after that (can't honestly remember off the top of my head) and then DC. Boston was in the running, but it just fell flat, surprisingly enough.

Mmm, US history.

Misheard Whisper July 21st, 2009 9:26 PM

Must be so confusing. You have a lot more history than us; you've been around longer, and you're one hell of a lot bigger. We're a little nation of four million. Hell, NY city has three times the population of our whole country crammed into one tiny area.

But NY is awesome. I spent a few days there, and it really is the city that never sleeps.

JX Valentine August 2nd, 2009 2:37 PM

Well, I officially fail at writing. But I have an excuse this time in the form of that one fic I keep writing.

Anyway, if you'll notice, I've given you two prompts: one for week six and one for week seven. Assuming this challenge is still alive, you guys get to fly solo for awhile because I'm going to be gone for a week and a half in the middle of the month. As in, literally, I'm leaving the middle of week six and not coming back until the middle of week seven.

Try not to burn this place down, mmkay?

Misheard Whisper August 2nd, 2009 2:48 PM

I plead the same excuse. Have fun wherever you're going when you go!

JX Valentine August 30th, 2009 7:46 PM

Back, and I do believe we're due for a new prompt, yes?

It's now up on the first post. Start planning, lovelies.

I Laugh at your Misfortune! August 31st, 2009 9:11 AM

Hey, I might give this a try. No doubt I'll fail miserably, but that's the part that's the most fun XD

We start writing on this Sunday, right?

Hmm...lesson? Well that might be tricky...
