Legend
Ancient mythology peaks my interest!

Ancient folklore of the region tells tales of the Original One. How the Original One created the deities of Time and Space. And how the Original One gave life to three other beings as well. These three beings capable of controlling the deities of Time and Space were placed at three separate lakes. Although the myth ends there, it is believed that the Original One also created another deity; The deity of Dimension. After the Original One was finished it is believed that it went on to rest. The world lived in harmony thereafter.

Story
What's going to happen?

Spoiler:
Welcome to the region of Siprus! A region of lush forests, arduous mountains, arid deserts, and frigid temperatures. To the north, you’ll find a glacial sub-arctic climate. To the east, you’ll find a bone-dry desert. And in the south you’ll find a temperate forested area. Although the weather seems omnipotent, it could be the last of your worries. Something is out of the ordinary here. The golden era of prosperity has seen a spiral downward. Siprus is falling fast. The north is already overrun by crime. Luckily the southern section of the region has not fallen to crime yet. One step in the wrong direction could potentially send the region into chaos.

Spoiler:
James ran swiftly to his room. He pulled the drawer in which he kept his journal so quickly that the entire drawer completely came out. With no time to spare, James didn’t bother fixing it. He grabbed his journal and started to hastily scribble an entry in on a random page.
“I know the secret to put an end to this all. Unfortunately I am the only one left in this town. The secret must be written down so someone else may take on my legacy if I happen to fail,” James whispered to himself as he wrote quickly.
“Finished. I must put a stop to this now.”

Spoiler:
Forty-six years later, a man hunched over an ancient looking book read by candle light in the Canalave City Library. He was a tall and slender build. Albeit being quite young at the age of thirty-four, he held an impression of knowledge and obviously was very wise. He flipped through the pages of the book almost obsessively. Suddenly, he stopped turning page after page. The page he had been looking for had been found. He knew what he had to do. It was best that he start as soon as possible.

Spoiler:
Thirteen more years passed. The man had successfully moved his family to the Siprus region. He set up his own research lab in the small village of Solaria. His work on ancient pokémon made him rather famous. An old colleague of his mentioned finding a strange journal with hasty scribbling on one of the middle pages. His eyesight was rather weak and the scribbling would be difficult to decipher even for a man younger in years and blessed with perfect eyesight. Although the distance between Lunaceon Town and Solaria Village was rather short, Professor Willow was old and as much as he hated to admit it, the stiffness that comes with old age caused him great pain to walk even the shortest distances. Your father, Professor Aspen, has been rather busy as of late. Professor Oak, of the Kanto region has asked your father if he could track data on pokémon in the Siprus region. Naturally, Aspen accepted. Because of all this busy work trying to set up the pokédex for the Siprus region, he is unable to retrieve the journal from Professor Willow.

Spoiler:
Professor Aspen needed someone to go to Lunaceon Town and you were the perfect fit for the job. Knowing that you have been asking for your first pokémon for ages, your father decided that in return for retrieving the journal, he will let you keep the pokémon that you used to go to Lunaceon Town. Unknown to you at the time, this journal holds the secret to unlocking your destiny…

The hero and heroine sprites will be changed eventually, but I haven't gotten that far yet. And there will definitely be new interior tiles along with all new indoor mapping. Also, I usually make it a priority to give the player a good amount of playability in my maps so I don't think that overcrowded maps will be a problem. Thanks for the advice though. ^_^

~Fairytales.

I'll probably experiment with the palettes a little more because they are a little bit too soft. If I can't find anything suitable, I think I will just leave it as it is because in my opinion it looks fine. Thanks for the suggestions! ^_^

EDIT:

New Hero overworlds are inserted. Courtesy of kyledove of course. :D
The first post is updated with new screenshots with the new overworlds.

What do simulacrae have to do with your storyline? Just wondering.

I'll just say it involves you and the dream you have of you causing havoc and chaos. And maybe your dream isn't about you in particular. If you catch my drift.

Alec_ June 23rd, 2009 2:36 PM

Awesome Overworld ^^. Great updates you got there :3. Love it. XD;;. Keep up the good work.

sasquatchd00d June 23rd, 2009 8:24 PM

Well, I have got around to new interior tiles. This isn't completely done yet. As you can see the bookshelf is old and I still need to insert more tiles. But I just wanted to give a little taste.

Thank you. :D

By dank, do you mean bad haha?

EDIT/UPDATE:

I'm in the process of adding shadows under the majority of overworlds.

They can be seen here in these screenshots.

What do you guys think?

MASTEROFPUPPETS93 June 24th, 2009 12:11 PM

Hey I didn't recognized this thread xD
Everything looks so beautiful... The hero-OW looks really great...
I can see from the screenshots that the maps are nice...
But that isn't new with your unearthly skillz :P
Keep up that good stuff ;)

Vrai June 27th, 2009 10:33 AM

It's beautiful. The tiles and palettes are perfect (in my eyes, at least), and give the graphics a very distinct look (and it's an awesome look, imo). I'm pretty sure we can expect some awesome mapping from you, too, so no qualms about that. :3

The storyline sounds pretty cool, too. This is definitely bound to be an awesome hack, and I look forward to watching its progress. >:D

See how the hero sprite has a shadow under him? There is also a shadow under the guy there. I think the overworlds look so much better with the shadows under them.

Are my eyes screwing up..?

I swear that screenie had some random pixels everywhere... The one in your sig does, too!

They look fine to me. I don't see a bunch of random pixels everywhere.

SWEET!! A village named after me!! (My name is "Xinchun" which is Chinese for "New Spring")
Hehehe.... I like the maps. Pokecenter is awesome. LOL

I just LOVE the first two screenshots (for reasons stated above. LOL)
Good luck with this, ne?

negative June 27th, 2009 1:32 PM

I like it!
The story is quite nice, and the tiles, and palettes are very fresh.
Lunaceon City is... the opposite of Solaceon Town in Sinnoh?(by name and all.)

Payload June 28th, 2009 12:37 PM

Alright, time to go old school on this.
Quote:

You have just turned fifteen years old. Kind of cliche, wouldn't you say? Your father is a world renowned pokémon scientist Studying what? and he has offered you your first pokémon in exchange for a little errand he needs you to run for him. What's the errand, and why isn't he completing it? You are very excited at the thought of your very own pokémon. Ever since you were very little, you and your childhood rival would run around pretending to be pokémon or pretending to have pokémon battles. The night before the day you will receive your first pokémon, you have a dream. A dream of you causing havoc and destruction. How so? You wake up covered in cold sweat and realize that it’s just a dream. You would never do such a thing. Why should the player be concerned over a dream? Your mood quickly changes as you realize what day it is and you promptly get out of bed and go to the kitchen for breakfast. You eat quickly and run over to your father's lab. You receive your first pokémon Which is...? and leave for Lunaceon Town with a wave. And so your journey begins. To do what? Catch all the Pokémon? Conquer the league?
Overall, there's a few cliches in there, and some missing details that you might want to fill in.
I'm not even going to bother with the 'legend' because it's basically the one from Diamond & Pearl, which has been overused far too many times. Anyhow, I wish you good luck.

Samike360 June 28th, 2009 12:54 PM

^Most of those "questions" you asked he is probably delibrately leaving unanswered so that the reader would want to play to hack. People would play the hack to find out why the dream was so scary and what the first pokemon is.

I wasn't asking why the dream was so scary, I was more inquiring why the player would be concerned with a dream. Dreams aren't real.

Deliberate or not, if you leave out too many details (which he actually didn't, but it happens) the story becomes too vague for anyone to truly interpret correctly.
If a story is too vague, and it's all revealed in detail in the game, that doesn't do us all that much good, does it? No offense, but I'm not going to play a hack if the story doesn't make any sense.

Also another nitpick I have is with the mountains. The saturation isn't as high as the other tiles, so they don't really look like they fit in.

As much as Cooley probably appreciates your post, I have to disagree with this one. Specifically, this part:

If a story is too vague, and it's all revealed in detail in the game, that doesn't do us all that much good, does it? No offense, but I'm not going to play a hack if the story doesn't make any sense.

A story can be vague. All the storyline in the thread is meant to do, is explain a little bit (note I said "little bit") of what's to be expected in-game. The actual purpose is to really just capture your attention. Of course, if it doesn't make any sense at all, no one's going to want to play it. But a story with well-placed blanks that make it vague, I think, can be pulled off.

Also, with the clichés; if it's good enough, they work. Sorry, but that's the way it goes. Some things are clichéd, but in the right hands, they feel.. less repetitive? Something like that, yeah.

I actually really like the way the mountain contrasts with the other tiles.
