Who thinks the characters talk too much?

In Red version, all the way up to 3rd gen people didn't talk as much. Well they did, but it seemed to go by quicker and things in general are faster.

Such as, battling a pokemon. The text messages appear quicker and can be pressed quicker, battle things are quicker, health bar drain/increase is quicker as well as the EXP. bar.

In D/P/Pt, am I the only one who notices things are way too damn slow??

jasonresno June 28th, 2009 12:01 PM

That was the FIRST thing I noticed when I started playing it. Everything just seemed sllloowww.

Elena June 28th, 2009 12:02 PM

You can change that, you know.

RHCP June 28th, 2009 12:08 PM

Yeah! This is so annoying! I mean, you listen (Read!) to them for a little while, then get bored. So, you keep pressing the A button 100mph, then you realise you missed a key part! XD

Text speed won't solve this, its the quantity of things they say, and in battle is so SLOWWW

Ayselipera June 28th, 2009 1:13 PM

I noticed that some of the characters talk forever.
Besides that I didn't notice a slower speed of anything besides surfing in Diamond and Pearl.

Like in-battle. Effects look pretty, but messages take a long time to display. When it says "Wild ??? Appeared!", it stays stationary for like 5 seconds then the next message, and after that it pauses for a while (I guess to give the player time to read).

After every message, it pauses before it does what it says it's doing, like after I use a move like Thunderbolt or something, the whole text box goes blank for a second, then a few seconds later the move effect animation comes and it says "??? used Thunderbolt!". It gets on my nerves every single day when I play this game.

Tinhead Bruce June 28th, 2009 2:03 PM

I mean yeah, it's slow, but what'cha gonna do about it? It's just a thing. Maybe they'll fix it next gen, like they did with surf speed in Platinum. I just rapidly press A. You're not really going to miss anything important. The 4th Gen story is sorta meh.

Inferno1 June 28th, 2009 2:56 PM

Platinum has to much talking not so much diamond and pearl

ChronicEdge June 28th, 2009 5:52 PM

Eh, I'm pretty alright with it, but I'm a pretty laid-back guy. Still, there are moments when I wish that the DS had a 4X speed button.

At least it's never as long on the DS as in PBR online matches.

Do you need to consult a handbook to see what move's going to be super-effective or something?!

Gawd.

I never saw anything wrong with the speed of the text. I've changed the options of it to be fast and it isn't so bothersome for me and in my conjecture, it is perfectly fine. Though I do have to agree with surfing being really slow. It is a good thing that in Pokémon Platinum, the surfing is much more improved in speed. I must admit, the text speed does get to be slow in Wi-fi battles and trades but I believe that is only because of the Wi-fi Connection and of how the transfers need to go through since you are trading and battling with people from all over the world...

Overall, I do believe the speed of the Diamond and Pearl text, surfing, and the other things, are alright. They could be improved, but Nintendo is still, and will always be working in improvement.

Kristine June 28th, 2009 7:35 PM

The very first thing I did in Platinum was change the speed of the text to fast, but other than that I haven't noticed anything seeming particularly slow or drawn out. I'm quite happy with the amount that the characters talk throughout the storyline, and I enjoyed reading it. To me at least, it positively added to the gameplay.

Peccadillo June 28th, 2009 8:10 PM

For the talkative characters, Nintendo is trying to implement plot and personality in a Pokemon game.. Just let me beat up other Pocket Monsters. Don't spare the enemy the extra 5 seconds. D:<

Munch Dog June 28th, 2009 9:59 PM

You can get through battle messages faster by tapping the bottom screen if it's going too slow for you. I didn't mind the all the talking, I'm a fast reader so it never took me too long to get through all the talking.

ChronicEdge June 28th, 2009 10:09 PM

I don't like the talking because the characters never have anything interesting to say.

God, I am waiting for a story-oriented Pokemon game.

Oh, The Places You'll Go. June 28th, 2009 10:38 PM

By the time I got Platinum, I was used to the slow-everything.
Diamond n' Pearl were the pains in the butt.
I did not mind more text the character had to say, I think it gave me more in depth about what was going on.
And sometimes, I just wanted to turn off my game. >.>

Jas1995 June 28th, 2009 10:40 PM

Yes! I think they dont shut up, i have my text on fast and just zoom through it unless i dont know what to do.

I would have felt the same if I would have played them on a real DS.(I play on an emulator but am going to buy a real DS real soon! Believe it!) Emulators like No$gba can run the games at twice their speed so speed's not a problem for emulator users but I admit that it is very painful for DS users.

a.new.bent June 29th, 2009 6:01 AM

Sure some of the characters may talk a lot but most of it is important to the storyline.
As for the hp bars, I've gotten used to the speed

~*!*~Tatsujin Gosuto~*!*~ June 29th, 2009 6:50 AM

I'm so happy that the Pokemon company has the option to speed up things because if not I will still be playing Pokemon Emerald right about now, still be talking to the 4th gym leader

Anyways they do talk too much, it's like that with almost every game

:t354:TG

joehat June 29th, 2009 6:59 AM

I don't mind a lot of talking in the games. I would rather the game take a long time to finish. I'm purposely holding out on the Survival Area and Stark Mountain just to make it seem like my game is taking longer. Haha that might sound kinda weird to most players, but it makes it a bit more fun if you ask me. I always have something to look forward to. I also haven't been all the way up Route 224 yet.

I hope they really revamp the speed at which battling goes though. The thing I hate the most is that every time you encounter a wild Pokemon, you send out your Pokemon. I would much rather it just be like..

Wild Zubat appeared! What will (player) do?
and then you'd get the regular options of sending out a Pokemon, using an item, or running.

Now, as for sending out a Pokemon, you should be able to choose which one, not just the first one in your party. Of course, this would almost always give you the advantage, but it's not like you HAVE to do it.

I honestly think that would save about 5 seconds a battle, and when you play the game for a year or more, I know 5 seconds helps.

Eggie Poo Poo June 29th, 2009 7:41 AM

The battle messages are the things that annoy me the most, the characters talking in the story I can brush off easy, but in WiFi battles when the messages are even SLOWWWEEERRRRRR, it tempts me to just run from the WiFi battles and call it quits.

Anyone else notice how ridiculously long it takes to trade Pokemon? Like, GOD!!! SPEED UP THAT CUTSCENE!!!

Spinosaurus June 29th, 2009 8:53 AM

Speed text option is your friend.I dont care if they talk too much I simply just skip it by pressing A repeatedly.

EDIT:

I noticed. They should make it shorter, but I just simply dont care.

Sweet Smoochum June 29th, 2009 9:40 AM

I hate talking to characters don't tell you anything useful/interesting. It's just blah.

I'll provide some examples:

"We're on constant patrol. It's safe here, even at night."
"Yup, a kid like you should be running around outside, rain or shine."
"Fishing and battling are delicate things--as am I. Is that wrong?"
"I want to show off my pretty parasol, but it will get dirty in the rain. Oh, such a big dilemma!"
"You've been to the Great Marsh? How about the Pokemon Mansion? Wherever I go, I get to meet new and different Pokemon. I feel so privileged and happy about that."
"Here where I'm standing, I'm smack-dab in the middle of town."

Music I dislike: Celestic town theme, Pastoria theme, Eterna City theme, battle music, Solaceon theme, Twinleaf town theme, Sandgem town, bicycle theme, Route 222 theme, Survival area.

Wow, I dislike a lot of music in Dppt. :(

I also find the bog annoying. As well as how long it takes to make a battle begin and how it says "it is raining." I can tell that is indeed raining. I don't need to read it 10 ten times. Ugh.

To add to that, in Pokemon Mansion: Mr. Backlot's whole speech makes me want to nail him nice and hard in between his eyes.

Munch Dog June 29th, 2009 2:29 PM

Yeah, Backlot is the only person I can't stand to talk to. I just want to know what pokemon he's going to have his butler put into the garden today! I'm envious! Shut up already!

Gimmy June 29th, 2009 2:30 PM

I wouldn't mind the first time he asks me if I'm jealous, but after that I don't give a crap. I just hammer the A button till I miss what pokemon he's lying his sorry ass about.

It is pretty bothersome to hear him say the same things over and over again after you beat the Elite Four. The only different word he says is the name of the pokémon that is in the Trophy Garden I believe.
Some of the people in the game just talk to you too much in my conjecture. Perhaps if Nintendo could have shortened up the people in the game's words, it would have been much more better. However, that is just my opinion on that.
Though I didn't find it to be a huge drag in the game and I got used to it a little after I got the game.

.Ozymandias June 30th, 2009 12:22 AM

Although it is slow in D/P, I found it a lot quicker on Pt. Though there was the same amount of speech, it went by so much quicker.

Or maybe I just didn't notice...

Citrinin June 30th, 2009 12:29 AM

I actually enjoy the increased level of speech. I find it adds more to the story, and didn't find it excessive at all - I thought they'd struck the right balance for the most part. Although, I do admit that certainly some characters do talk a bit too much.

joehat June 30th, 2009 12:47 AM

It depends. Sometimes, a longer speech is a good thing, but excess (such as Backlot, as many of you have provided in your examples) can be a bit annoying.

I always thought one cool feature of the game would be if more NPC's recognized you. Let's say you visited the Eterna City Pokemon Center. The next time you go it would be cool if, instead of the same old speech from Nurse Joy, she just said (for instance) "Good morning (player), would you like us to heal your Pokemon?"

The same can be said for so many other characters..the two berry people, Mr. Backlot, Solaceon Daycare couple, and of course NPC trainers.

I think it would also be cool if other NPC's recognized your progress through the game. I can't stand the fact that you're the Pokemon League Champion, yet it seems that no one knows.

As a matter of fact, I'm all for more dialogue in the games. Haha I guess I'm one of the only people who feels this way.

I don't find a problem to this whole thing, actually. Music are pretty fine to me, I guess. And for the text, if you don't wanna read it, don't read it. I'm interested if you ask me.

But I have to agree with the Bog. It's very annoying! And the Snow is annoying too.
The rest is pretty fine to me.

TheAliveTrain June 30th, 2009 10:36 AM

It was a pain to start the "game". You'd need to go to a lake, then get a Pókemon, then go back, then go to the lab, then go back again because you have no running shoes and so on...

Anyways, it was a good intro, just so many speech-

I play the game often and for hours, but sometimes the music bothers me if I'm hearing the same tune all the time. The music helps me concentrate better. (But I do like the night music better than the music that plays during the day. But, I don't necessarily "hate" all the music. I love the old and new contest songs and the Cynthia battle theme. It's just sometimes, some songs like Eterna city bother me when I have the volume on high to overpower my brother's SSMB. I'm so used to the music in the previous games and I like the songs from those games (GSC) better. When in comparison to the old games, I like the other music better.)

The quotes I mentioned were from the trainers to the left of Pastoria city. In almost every Pokemon game, I try to talk to every trainer. In previous games, a lot of trainers would tell me important info. As for FrLg, I liked how some trainers talked about gym leaders/e4/prof. It was interesting. Some characters do kind of talk for a long time. For example, the guy who owns the Pokemon Mansion. Sometimes I talk to the person more than once, because I don't remember if he told me what Pokemon was in the garden.

Though, I will admit, I think it was nice that for once, the trainers have more to say and they're willing to talk to your trainer. The creators took the time to give each character dialogue, and made them tell the character something that's not story-related.

(I like the snow part, but every two seconds left of Pastoria and in G.M., I get stuck in the bog, and it makes me not want to be in that area. I haven't been to the Great Marsh in months because of it.)

i love garchomp June 30th, 2009 10:55 AM

Yeah the quicksand stuff is annoying because you sink in and you have to mass tap the directional pads, like omfg Nintendo should take out all that programming crap they spent into that and put it into something useful, like custom music tracks for the Legendary Birds.

there are advantages and disadvantages one advantage sometimes IN BIG BATTLES like the lat gym or eleite for(if its your first time) it increase the intensidy of battle wile you watch your oponenet get hit and the health bar slowly decreases.
Disadvantage is it take too long to do task like leveling up a pokemon the reasons the devolper did this was proberly to make the game feel longer than it acualy is .

My first time going through, I somewhat noticed the lowered speed, but it didn't bother me. However, on the second and third times through (Platinum and a Pearl restart), everything just seemed...obnoxious. The amount of talking, at least. Still, it isn't anything game-breaking or overly annoying.

Pokestick, good times. July 8th, 2009 12:26 PM

Well, a High-quality game needs to be a little slow, right? If not, then well yea, DP is slow, live with it. Platinum is almost as fast as 3gen though.

Its very painful to watch through the Champion cutscene over and over, and its definitely gotten slower since Generation 3.

However, I did notice Battles move faster, all except for the battle tower that is...

I never thought it was to slow. Mr Backlot's long long speech made me want to sick my Houndoom on him though. -.-

agree 100% on characters talking too much

thats not the only thing

- everything is so much slower (pokecentres, cutting trees and going in and out of houses)

- coz ive just got bak into pokemon leaf green, to play it all the way through so i can get mewtwo and it is so much faster.

...
The Attack missed!

EJ July 15th, 2009 12:02 PM

I have to agree, Gen. IV does have slower battles. I recently picked up Blue and played it for old times' sake and I quickly noticed that the battles were blazing quick. I got like 2-3 attacks off in the time a whole turn would take in D/P/PT.

Other than that, I don't think the characters talk so much.

Everything is slow, they need to cut down on somethings or have an option to get rid of some of it, I mean a wild pokemon you appear from one side so do they, can it jump to "... was found".. Don't get me started on trading.

Momoko July 18th, 2009 2:10 AM

i hate how they packed so much text into D/P/PT >.<
I think they just did it to make the game feel longer haha.
Really,i dont mind too much but sometimes the suspense kills me and i cant wait to get the talking over with.
