rival times O_o

i remember the first time i played pearl, the rival would constantly pop up in the worst occasions. the worst was the pokemon leage though. there i was exsausted with all my pokemon weakend by victory road. i made one wrong step to the pc and the guy came shooting out of nowhere and challanged me. i literately beat him with one guy leaft at 23 hp. If only his battle theme wernt so addicting

Ayselipera July 2nd, 2009 4:05 PM

When I first played I always ironically healed up before encountering him so It wasn't a big deal.

Calvo819 July 2nd, 2009 4:35 PM

i encountered him with one pokemon left... almost won, only to be killed torterra... i had advantage too... Typhlosion...

That only happen to me in the GSC era, and ever since then I looked up where the rivals appear in each game so I dont get easily defeated.

I usually heal each chance I get. But that happened to me when you encounter him in Hearthome. Good thing I was slightly over leveled.

Citrinin July 4th, 2009 3:15 PM

Heh, I know what you mean. :P Constantly I would be caught out by my rival. Luckily, I save regularly - very regularly, so had I been plunged to the start of Victory Road, I could have just switched the game off and healed. There was no way I was going to redo it. XD;

Glaceon_ July 4th, 2009 3:32 PM

It happens to the best of us, really. Though the earliest time I recall it happening (to the "Oh no, I'm going to lose!" degree) was during R/S/E; particularly when Wally popped out of nowhere and challenged me to a battle on Victory Road. A lot of that battle was damage control, I can tell you. XD

But as for in Generation IV games, it sometimes happened, but most of my team was at full health anyway, so the surprise got kicked to the curb and got called a minor annoyance. This being specifically noticeable when the stupid rival pops up on the bridge, after I'd healed to challenge the Gym... XD;; It was very sigh-worthy. Particularly when he kept saying he was better than me, despite losing so many times... -_-;;

Pyrax July 4th, 2009 4:01 PM

It happened to me several times.
But most recently in Platinum when I went the wrong direction.

psychopath002 July 4th, 2009 4:03 PM

"Yes! Soooo close to the pokemon center! It's about time"
"I'M GOING TO BATTLE YOU NOW OUT OF NO WHERE!"
"Oh god..."

HirakuNoShadow July 4th, 2009 4:20 PM

For some reason that always happened to me in Gen II and III, but in IV, it doesn't seem happen much to me - but even then, I usually go about 10~15 levels higher than my rival since I only raise my starter and my Garchomp before i challenge Elite Four xD

Black Wolf July 10th, 2009 9:38 AM

I know o.o i started playing Platinum and then the stupid little weirdo rival just pops up outta no where and says "o i'm gonna battle you all of a sudden"....he's annoying in my opinion....the little blonde kid O.o he's annoying lol but he's really easy.

Denzer July 10th, 2009 10:53 AM

This happened to me several times and sometimes I had weak pokemon. The worst was when Wally battles you in R/E/S at the end of Victory Road.

dotKarma July 10th, 2009 1:24 PM

I'm always ready, because my starter is always at least 10 levels higher than his highest, haha. I probably OVER train my starter in all the games.

FreakyLocz14 July 10th, 2009 4:31 PM

I had a problem with the battle in Canalave but pulled through in the end

Actually in Emerald he battles you at the start of it instead.

salmence33 July 10th, 2009 8:26 PM

I hate it when my rival pops up

I'm ready to go to the canalave gym and he weakens my pokemon
I'm ready to go to the water gym and he weakens my pokemon
I'm ready to challenge the pokemon leage and he beats me

PokeBabe July 10th, 2009 9:42 PM

ROFL i hate when this happens after gym battles or when your really weak!
Like in Platinum, I talked to the guy that checks your badges for fun, without healing and BAM!
there comes my rival.
Most of the time, my pokemon are a bit over levelled though so i never really have a hard time.

derozio July 10th, 2009 9:55 PM

I healed my pokes before stepping up there and thus he was no problem. But have to agree that it would have been pretty bad if I kept my foot there without healing my pokes. ;)

PokeBabe July 10th, 2009 10:01 PM

Haha, yeah. i wasnt so lucky.
I also hate it if your rival pops up in a route. That really makes me mad. Especially if my pokemon are unfortunately poisoned or paralyzed.
A good example would be in Ruby/Sapph. on rout 118 or something ( I really dont remember)

ClassicPokemon July 10th, 2009 11:21 PM

Fighting my rival is one of my favourite things to do in any pokemon game...

Maybe you wanted to say route 119.

We all love to fight our rivals but the point here is that :Have you ever faced a situation when rival became annoying or became a threat? and not that rivals are bad and we don't like fighting them.

He's been a threat for me when i'm not prepared but it's never annoying.

Actually this 'annoying' part was for others but not me! He was neither a BIG threat as I was always fully prepared.

Akeraz July 11th, 2009 5:24 AM

T.T.
I've never lost against, or been caught by suprise by a rival in any game.
Maybe it's because I'm pretty cautious.

i'Aisha July 11th, 2009 5:31 AM

LMFAO!

This happens to me all the time :')

Serpine July 11th, 2009 5:32 AM

1. Not meaning to brag, but I've never been beaten in a Pokemon battle, but I haven't played online yet...
2. I find the rival to be a slight irritance, like a fly to be brushed off your shoulder and swatted in the air.

1. If you play competitive then you are likely to find trainers stronger than yourself.
2.Its true. (But only if you are well prepared and train very hard!)

jasonresno July 11th, 2009 9:26 AM

Up to the game I'm playing in Diamond (I just got to Heartthome) he hasn't been an issue at all. I usually brush him aside pretty easily and in fact I let my weakest Pokemon, Budew, beat down his Prinlup. It was a pretty cool victory cause I didn't even use my starter Pokemon at all. I have to say I like how even keeled my team is and I like that not even my rival can really strain my guys too much.

I'll also add that I don't IV/EV train. I don't breed for natures. I don't epic grind to get leveled up (though I finally leveled my Magikarp up to Gyrados. Magikarp was my first Pokemon I caught at level 4. I named him "Future". And now that he's Gyrados my team just got a lot better I think.)

PokeBabe July 11th, 2009 3:58 PM

Although they can be a bit annoying, i like how sometimes they are err..stupid :)
They use dumb tactics for example, one of my Rivals water pokemon used ice beam on my infernape -__-
Somtimes, you dont even really need to be higher leveled to defeat them.
Something that annoys me about them is how the always think their better even if they lose :P

Wings Don't Cry July 11th, 2009 6:42 PM

The only time a rival has been a threat to me was in R/S/E when you head north of Slateport and the champion of Fr/Lg
