Pikachu keeps its Japanese voice in English and is voiced by a woman http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAUXdDO_NgM

Yeah, some Pokemon keep the exact same voice that they did in Japanese, others are dubbed over by English voice actors for the Pokemon that have different names in Japanese and English. Off the top of my head, Pachirisu and Buizel also keep their Japanese voices. But I still think Pikachu is a boy ~

Ash is voiced by a woman >.>

I think Pikachu is male, though...after all, they're not going to have buneary being a lesbian, are they?

A Pixy July 15th, 2009 11:34 AM

I'm assuming the male, female Pikachu difference doesn't count. Because it should! I'm pretty sure they put that in DPPT to show people that.

There's that factor too! Unless someone here pulls an Edgeworth, I think there's no proof that Pikachu's female.

Well sometimes Pikachu would go to the guy's side with Ash. It usually would split most of the time, but Pikachu does have a very affectionate side towards Misty/May (not sure on Dawn since I dont watch Diamond and Pearl that much). But since I first started watching Pokemon the moment it appeared I always thought of it as him. Plus remember watching an episode from the second season when it was re-airing on boomerang. It was the one where Butch and Cassidy made Pokemon go evil...Ash called Pikachu a boy in that one when referring to him to Officer Jenny after Pikachu and Togepi attacked the group and then left.

But like most have said, only the dubs show more hints, yet the Japanese do too. Look at the many Pokemon Contest for Dawn, the other Pokemon be wearing cheerleading outfits why Pikachu still hasn't been caught dead in one. Why Piplup? I don't kno...T_T but thats off topic

I'm sure in a few episodes it is referred to as 'He'.
That should clarify that it is male, surely.

Cloche July 16th, 2009 11:18 AM

It has always been my general belief that Pikachu is a boy... I think it was referred to as "he" like someone else has said above. But, I guess it could be left up to interpretation.

Sweet Smoochum July 18th, 2009 11:53 PM

I believe Pikachu is a male 100%. I'm still unsure about Ash's gender though. That's still a mystery to me.

The Jewel of Life July 24th, 2009 12:52 PM

Okay, I have undenyable proof that pikachu is a girl, that involves buneary AND phione. THink about it, wouldn't phione stop liking buneary if he found out that she liked a girl. Most guys I know would find that pretty wierd.

Also cerulean 15, the answer about piplup can also be found in the phione episode. Piplup went up to phione and started acting friendly... too friendly. It's possible that piplup is a girl. Duh! XD

gothboyz1992 July 25th, 2009 12:28 AM

I think Pikachu is a male when though I am not 100% convince he is I have my doubts

Captain Hobo. July 26th, 2009 8:24 AM

I think Pikachu is a male.

You DO realize that the Bidoof and Steelix episode had at least one Bidoof with the Male Gender Difference with several with the Female Gender Difference, right?

Well, anyways, I'd say Pikachu's male. For instance, we've already had Pikachu willingly wearing boy clothing (or Japanese equivalent of boy clothing) all the time (Barring Misty's fantasy of it wearing a dress.), the few times it wore girls dresses (like the maid outfit), it was clearly embarassed, Buneary had a crush on it, it was seen carrying packages in "Princess vs. Princess" (This one is a very BIG hint at it's gender, as the narrator said that the males at the Princess Festival are absolutely required to carry the packages.).

There were also a few times in Pikachu's goodbye where some of the Pikachu had niks on their tails that were extremely similar to the gender differences to Pikachu. I'd supply a screenshot, but sadly, Serebii.net doesn't seem to allow people to take screenshots from the episode pictures section.

It's kinda sexist for you people to say these different Pokemon are "male" or "female" based off of personality. Ever heard of transgenderism? And besides... This is an Eastern cartoon dubbed in the West. Our cultures are vastly different with certain things acceptable there and not here and vice versa.

For example: James is gay in the Japanese anime. Yet in our dub, he's simply effeminate with the occasional gay implication slipped past the censors. So does anyone really think it unlikely a Pokemon couldn't also be gay/lesbian, or have a non-gender specific personality?

Umm, correct me if I'm mistaken, but I thought James was attracted to THREE females over the course of the Show, which implies that he's not gay, even in the japanese version?

And I didn't even bring up gender based on personality traits.

Sydian July 27th, 2009 10:10 AM

I'm just going with the fact that Pikachu was groping Ash's momma. Nah, I've always thought Pikachu was a boy. I can't explain it, though. It's just a hunch.

noobiot100 July 27th, 2009 5:48 PM

I really don't know, but if Dawn's buneary is a female, then pikachu is probably a male.

It's all according to context. James could have been going ga-ga over females to suggest they were just so beautiful and make a joke that even the gay guy is into them... But to be honest, I really don't know. Of course there's no references on Bulbapedia, but I have read he was before in a discussion on original/dub differences.

I wasn't referring specifically to you, but to pretty much everyone that's posted in here.

Åzurε July 27th, 2009 9:21 PM

Most pokemon are non-masculine in appearance, but you can generally tell by the character what they are.
If it was my world, Pikachu might end up a girl (hehe- I mean, eeeww! XD), but canon implies, if not states that he's a he.

Well, I don't think a "homosexual guy" would even be attracted to one girl. Plus, you have to take into account the episode "Ghost of Maidens Peak" where he was clearly smitten with the ghost.

Jolene July 30th, 2009 3:08 AM

Pikachu is pretty obviously male.

Air Pichu July 30th, 2009 7:00 AM

I've been watching it for a loooong time now and Pikachu is a male. In many episodes there are many references that Pikachu is a %100.0 Pure MALE.

MegaKirby August 1st, 2009 8:31 AM

Well if we use the game logic, it is male sense it tail is a full diamond shape.
