I don't see anybody use the Sky Pillar.I like the Sky Pillar's tileset.

As much as I liked how it looked, it just didn't have the cave feel. Caves are supposed to be dark and damp, not bright and shiny.

The bad thing is, it also includes Pacifidlog town, so basically two(but I'm fairly sure that birth island is part of that) tilesets aren't used at all. I plan to use pacifidlog by replacing it with cinnabar tiles >w>

You have a point there. I don't even remember anyone posting a moderately good looking map made from those ice cave tiles.
Just wondering, are you saying the whole tileset or just that part of it?

Aljam November 8th, 2009 12:42 AM

I'm talking about the ice part. I forgot that that one had a couple of different cave tiles ~_~

Ninja Caterpie November 8th, 2009 1:30 AM

Underrated second tileset, hmm?

Dunno, really...

Meteor Falls. Nobody ever seems to use it, and it's the best cave tileset ever, I reckon. xP

Banjora Marxvile November 8th, 2009 1:33 AM

Meteor Falls is seriously underrated, however it is hard to map with it if you don't know what you are doing, due to the variety of mountains, tiles, extra features and things like that. Most Ruby hacks I have seen either only have a minor change in these maps or replaced the Meteor Falls tileset (like in Battle Fire, where they used a jungle instead).

But it is SO AWESOME if you can map in the Meteor Falls style!

Is this proper usage of those tiles?

Yes, I put those tiles into a Moonshine at some point. =D I love Emerald's caves that much.

No, don't worry about the waterfall errors.

Indeed it is (or nearly is, the wall right up North should be the stalactity one, and the mountain face at the bottom connects to the side ones and there is a rock tile error near the top, a rock in a wall), however there are probably many ways they can be used. To get that Meteor Falls feel is... Well, weird. For instance, there is a special tile you must use next to the Water Edge (but whether that is just in Ruby, I don't know), as well as in the actual map, the bit near the bottom of the map (again, in Ruby) uses a Darker default ground than the rest... So many different things, it seems hard to map.

I love this tileset, I'm totally using it for the main mountain in my new hack.

Although I guess Meteor Falls isn't suited to large maps...

Eh, I can get around that. =P

As long as you map it right. It really looks so complicated, so I might just post something about the different tiles (only in the Ruby one, as that is the only ROM I have, bar Firered, and Emerald isn't too different) and what should be used there. hopefully more MF maps could be made.

NEVAAAAAAAARRR!!!!!

You must leave the secret technique of MeteorFallMapping in the hands of those who deserve it. >=[ The ones that figure it out themselves. >=[

The tiles can still be used normally, of course, just for a much weaker effect.

I doubt anyone would want to spend ages reading how to make 1 map anyway, so it would be a waste of time... Patience would help a few hackers, so I guess we leave it to them.

New discussion: Do you preffer to read tutorials, or test though a lot errors and trials, or you ask a lot of quostiens?

Logan November 8th, 2009 5:31 AM

Trial and error for me, always the way I went. Learned scripting through observing Game Freak's scripts.

Banjora Marxvile November 8th, 2009 5:33 AM

Hmm... Sometimes Trial and Error (especially with expanding a Block Data in Tilesets, as it can create a world of problems, as well as I learnt to Tile Insert with no tutorial), but I mostly read tutorials, as they are helpful.

I prefer the combination of the first two.
I only ask a lot of questions when every single script that I make doesn't work like I imagened it. xD

Satoshi Ookami November 8th, 2009 6:26 AM

I read tut and then test it... it eventually comes out as I wanted to.

Pokepal17 November 8th, 2009 7:18 AM

I read a tutorial to get down the basics and then I do some trial and error. :P

.Seth November 8th, 2009 8:20 PM

It depends on the subject. Mapping for me is all trial and error. I map my own way, use the tiles how I want to, and if I make an error, I correct it. Scripting on the other hand requires references such as an item/pokemon hexadecimal list whilst doing bigger scripts. So, for scripting, I'd use a tutorial, or more likely, a text file containing the list. Graphics editing; however, would leave me with more than one tutorial. Although, if I'm just correcting a sprite (like a few pixels), it's trial and error. But, like I said, it depends.

Also, I had a thought a few minutes ago. What is a "hack"?
When we think of a "hack", at least in pokemon, we take in the graphics, maps, and events/scripts. But, with a "hack" in definition is a modification of a file by use of a program (in our case, and yes this includes hexadecimal editors) or specific code. But, by definition, a hack is a single modification of said file. So, when we change a map, going by this definition, it is a complete "hack" or change. But, in our sense of the word, a "hack" is many modifications of one file, in this case a ROM. So, what do you think a "hack" is? One lone modification, or many?

I would like to think that I figure things out for myself but the honest truth is that the majority of what I know is already covered in some document/tutorial somewhere. I tried to do some research into tile animations once but I didn't get very far.

It's a little different in that the perimeter (and in the default map, certain cliffs) appears to be straight up cliffs rather than inclined ones (which are everywhere in Pokémon games). By the way, fun fact: overworld (and overworld-based, like forests) tileset needs major modifications to fit the camera angle between FR/LG and R/S/E, but indoor and cave areas don't as they already are similar in style. Ish. (Camera angle moreso.) So putting Meteor Falls' tileset into FR/LG won't look too tacky (unless you compare the overall FRLG design scheme).

And/or if you replace every single cave tileset with an RSE one. =D Like me. -laffs-

I'd like to start with a new topic ;D

My question is: Is the press start in the title screen necessary?

I think it isn't. When trying to insert a background with lots and lots of colors, those 2 taken up by the image could really be used elsewhere and make it better. It's like having a book saying, "open cover".

So, anybody wanna talk it up?

NarutoActor November 10th, 2009 5:48 PM

You don't have to make the start button gray, and black. you can make it green for all I care. I do find it nesisary, I feel like the title screen is missing something if it dosen't have it.

NarutoActor November 10th, 2009 6:07 PM

aww, I am so sorry, I didn't see it. :P(I hate when that happends to me)
I think when pokemon rom hacking first came out a single modification was considered a compleat hack(like just adding one dp pokemon), but as we advanced a single modification dose not cut it. So now the defeintion as changed, for it to be considered a compleat hack you have to have a lot of changes.

Cool story bro (b'-')b

By definition, a hack is what you said, but most people prefer to call that just a simple edit, since no real work is done.
That is basically the whole discussion right there.

Yes, it should to the new players. To most of us, it is already implied to press the start button in clear text, but isolating it(and thus making it stick out) while making it clearly legible will work just as well.

Since we were talking about meteor falls, am I the only person who noticed that Mt. Moon has somewhat similar tiles? It also has those little walls to show how steep the cave is.
