Which do you prefer?

Do you watch anime in English or Japanese?

I watch anime in Japanese because it's more authentic

.Wolfie-kun. July 18th, 2009 3:41 PM

Japanese. Like you said, it's more authentic and in most anime, the voices sound better.

I only watch in English for anime I've grown up with or I think sound better i.e Dragonball Z

Vernikova July 18th, 2009 5:21 PM

In English. There's no reason for me to watch anything in Japanese if it has already been translated in my native language.

red fraction July 18th, 2009 5:45 PM

I watch the dubs because I hate distracting myself from the anime to read text. I don't care if the voices are terrible or not.

Legobricks July 19th, 2009 1:43 AM

I find that subtitles give translations that I find more preferable, since none of the dialogue is changed to make it 'fit better in speech' or make more sense to an American audience (which I am not, so I find some things like Kasuga's redneck accent used to get the jokes across better in the Azumanga Daioh dub mighty frustrating).

If they've got decent British voices though, as in Hellsing, I'll watch the dub. No offence to anyone but I find American accents grating and all extremely samey.

xxxLatiasxxx July 19th, 2009 2:05 AM

I prefer to watch anime in English.

Miz en Scène July 19th, 2009 5:56 AM

English, because it gets tiring having to read the subs. Though, I watch in Japanese when it's unaviodable like in FMA Brotherhood that just came out. The voices do sound better though.

Mana July 19th, 2009 7:56 AM

Japanese! <3 Subs are the way to go I think... American-animation voice actors just don't seem to fit the characters :\ (Take naruto for example, rofl).

And I don't find reading distracting - its on the image so you can see it anyway :P and you don't have to focus intensely. For action scenes its not necessary anyway... which is where 'watching' is preferable XD

icomeanon6 July 19th, 2009 8:24 AM

Definitely English. I think it's important to watch anime in a language that you can fully understand, so that nuances in the dialogue aren't lost.

Take Cowboy Bebop as a counter-example. I'd say that the English VAs in Bebop surpassed the originals by far.

Actions scenes are one thing, but what I absolutely hate is when a subtitle covers a subtle facial expression or element on the bottom of the screen. Anime isn't designed to be watched with text obscuring part of the artwork, it's supposed to be a more cohesive experience.

Ironically, that's how most Americans view foreign accents as well.

Amaruuk July 19th, 2009 8:31 AM

Normally I don't have a preference, really. As long as I know what's going on, I'm not picky about voices.

The one exception is the Slayers dubs. 4kids eff'd those up so bad, even I can't stand to sit through it.

.little monster July 19th, 2009 8:41 AM

I prefer Japanese as long as there are English sub-titles. Japanese sounds amazing.

Satoshi Ookami July 19th, 2009 9:26 AM

Japanese at 100% I need to practice my japanese skills more then English xD But some exceptions are... When I feel like it I watch anime in english but that's not very ofter

Don't you mean ADV Films?

Andcetera July 19th, 2009 4:59 PM

I'd rather like to watch anime in english, but if dubs are not available, then I can resort to subs.

Vampire://Krimm July 19th, 2009 7:17 PM

I'll go both ways lolz xD

It really depends on the VAs. FUNimation's anime dubs I can usually listen to, but there are occasions. But I also love watching obscure anime so I usually end up watching Subs.

Cherrim July 20th, 2009 7:17 AM

English.

The reason I was a subs-only elitist for years was because they used to hack dubs apart when the localized them. Now that they don't really edit scenes or episodes anymore, dubs are muuuuch more tolerable. I prefer them now because I don't have to concentrate on reading--I know it takes little to no effort but it's much nicer to just sit back and be able to enjoy the anime rather than make sure you aren't missing any text.

.death July 20th, 2009 8:11 AM

I watch it either way. If half of the episodes of an anime are in English, and the second part is Subbed, then I'll just watch the first half in English, and then the second half in subs.

I agree. Your still watching the same Anime but in a different language.

Camisado July 20th, 2009 9:30 AM

Either really. Sometimes I prefer the voices in one or the other. I usually leave it on whatever the default is.

Anxiety. July 20th, 2009 9:55 AM

Japanese.
Most the time they mess up the English voices.

Pyrax July 20th, 2009 10:16 AM

English, but most of the time I prefer Japanese.

ReyRey-Pyon July 20th, 2009 10:46 AM

Meh, if i can find it, I'll watch the dub, I prefer dubs over subs anyways /le gaspi!

As long as the dub is still pretty accurate, i'm cool with it,

The voices aren't all that terrible, of coarse they'll sound strange if you're used to hearing the voices in japanese anyways x3 and some dub voices are very fitting for the character 8D

NeonFire July 21st, 2009 7:19 AM

I prefer Japanese with English subtitles.
I think the Japanese voices are better (in most shows) because in English, the kids' voices sound horrible.
Also, the drama and cheesiness is much more bearable when I'm listening to Japanese for some strange reason. X)

Ziraider July 21st, 2009 8:16 AM

I prefer Japanese with English subtitles, The Drama/show is different to the English version. I also, prefer Japanese because the voices! ;)

almateria July 21st, 2009 12:51 PM

Oh man, definitely Japanese. I barely watched dubs anymore, unfortunately.
