You are a young freelance photographer who is visiting the region of Mahronge, rumour has it that a strange Pokémon has been spotted near one of the villages there.
Struggling to pay the bills back home you're hoping that this could be your big break;
Find the Pokémon, snap a couple of shots and claim the reward, simple right?

If I want this to turn out as good as I'd like it to be I'm going to need plenty of help.
However I'm not going to start a hacking team yet, as it's still only in it's early stages.

If you do want to help out then PM me with details of what you can do.

This game is absolutely amazing. Be sure to look forward to taking pictures of a Rhyhorn eating grass!

MC Blaze August 1st, 2009 3:34 PM

It looks like a spin-off... a really good spin-off, not that Pokemon Dash or Trozei garbage. And yeah, you need to work on the story. Good luck with that.

Mages4ever August 1st, 2009 3:36 PM

This looks very interesting.
Though one question.
For the camera, is it like how the safari zone works? Or is it different?
Also, I like what you did with the menu.

So, the point of the game is to take pictures then right?

Chimchar 9 August 1st, 2009 3:43 PM

Looks very good.
I really like the features, i can't wait for more updates.
Good luck!:)

Eh, it's just the main goal at the end;

It's going to be much more side-quest/minigame orientated really, and I've got a whole stack of those planned. :]

Yeah, I'm using the safari script and then modifying it as I need to.

The bag menu or the bait script?

And yes, that's the point. :]

A very different hack indeed. A nice concept but as you say the storyline needs some developing for sure. For example, this "reward" seems as if it is going to be difficult to determine. As i've looked over what you've put on paper so far all i can forsee is a small shortlived hack as it doesn't seem as if it would have great life span. The other thing i'm sceptical is how you plan on having the action or how you're actually going to take the picture for example. Will you be using the "Safari Zone" battle script or be doing something different? Either way it seems good but i think if the entire hack is going to be just like catching pokemon in the safari but instead capturing images i can see that aspect of the game getting slightly bland and boring. Again i don't know what your intention is or whether you've developed one in detail.
Your spriting is very good and your inserting is very clean. You're using Unlz well too. The hack looks very nice and fresh and well layed out i just don't know how longlived the storyline can be. For this type of hack you are going to have so much space to work with. Side quests are definately going to be a key aspect to keep this going. For storylines and sort of different side quests and storylines, the Pokemon Ranger games are quite good. So try looking at the spin offs for ideas too. I would first suggest you develop the storyline, work on side quests then explain how the photo taking will work.

I do like your aspect and it is an ambitious idea. I wish you the best of look and i shall be keeping my eye on this and taking note of your updates.
Hooray for something different. ;]

Sublime August 1st, 2009 5:20 PM

You know, I really liked the film roll idea you had before.
With the concept of like, "basic film, great film, ultra film, etc." It kind of kept the concept of Pokeballs in the game, without not having them there.
But, whatever floats your boat.

Best of luck, to you :D

Mages4ever August 1st, 2009 5:41 PM

Both of them.
They both are nice.
How does the bait work?
Does it enable a Pokemon to be spawned on that tile?

ruby August 1st, 2009 5:48 PM

@Abnegation: I'm actually pretty optimistic about having enough things to do, this is the second time around attempting this hack for me and before I was sceptical like you.
Now however It's all going a lot smoother, I have plenty of side stories.

Here's a few just so you can get an idea of what they'll be like:
  • Gaby and TY (TV partner team from R/S/E) commission you to take pictures for them.
  • A puzzle house similar to the ones in R/S/E, Pokemon are inside but you have to find them in their hiding places.
  • At some point you have to go through a forest full of feral Ursaring so you have to find a trainer to escort you through. Once in there take pictures of sleeping Ursaring, or wake them up. (harder to catch once you do)
  • A Jigglypuff puts people to sleep and draws on their faces. You take pictures of the people with marker on their face.
  • Some old guy wants to relive his picture-taking past so he tells you to go out and take pictures for him and you return it for a great reward.
  • Moo Moo Farm petting zoo, fully equipped with Miltank, Tauros, Torchic, Swinub, Mareep, Ponyta, and assorted farm animals to take pictures of;
Some will be running around franticly, you need to buy Pokemon feed and put it in their trough to calm them down to get a picture.
  • Some fisherman guy wants to see a shiny magikarp that he lost when his line broke. You have to look for it and take a picture of it. When you show the guy the picture he gives you a reward.

As for the battle system I'm going to have to make a video to explain it, and will do so once there's enough to show.

@Sublime: The way the safari script works means that you don't get to choose the ball you throw unfortunately, so there would be no actual choice as to what film to use.

The way it's going to work now is you will have to buy various upgrades for your camera to improve the likelihood that the photo will come out all right.

These might be such things as new lenses, a flash, ASR technology etc.

Once you have bought one of these upgrades it will swap the ball you're using for a different one, giving the impression your camera is better.

This is going to require some ASM though, as safari mode doesn't actually use pokeballs like normal battles would.
It doesn't use up any items, it has it it's own count of 30 safari balls which have no physical presence in your bag.

@Mages4ever

It'll work in the same way that using the fishing rod does, except that you'll be able to move around as opposed to when holding the rod.

SharpPoint August 1st, 2009 9:27 PM

A risky and interesting idea I must say. I'm curious how you will pull off the actual taking pictures part...

Also, killer thread design.

I love you. lol. jk.
But I've always wanted a remake of Snap, or Snap-esque game on GBA.
I've attempted just mapping the places in Snap, but haven't put it to a single hack yet.
Anyways, it looks really nice so far. Good luck.

Torosiken August 1st, 2009 11:31 PM

wow cool ^.^ I think this will be great! Suree I will get it after it completed XD

Barney. August 2nd, 2009 5:02 AM

Hehe I see you liked my ideas :)
But, I also see taking pictures of Rhyhorns eating grass is not on this list >: (

Kyouya August 2nd, 2009 2:12 PM

this is gonna be fun to play but how will viewing pictures you taken work though
and how did you make that css where it scrolls to different parts of the first post

TAKUORO August 2nd, 2009 2:16 PM

Wow a spin off hack!
great idea and is on emerald my favorite rom =D
just change the tiles and it will be good!
I wish you luck!

Akeraz August 2nd, 2009 2:39 PM

I'm liking the idea of this.
I'll keep my eye on it.
The idea itself seems pretty interesting.

Tyrantrum August 2nd, 2009 7:50 PM

This is one of the most original ideas for a hack I've ever seen!

I really love the concept of this! :D
And I look forward to playing this.

The weird thing is, I never thought that you would make a hack, but oh well~
Anyways, good luck~

ruby August 2nd, 2009 9:28 PM

Thanks for the support. :]

Just some new screenshots before I go to bed:

At the moment I'm researching ASM, scripting the beginning sequence of the boat trip to Mahronge and working on the new card reader feature as seen above.

alo123 August 2nd, 2009 9:35 PM

Good looking screen shots also cool memory
card feature this looks like it will be a great hack

Team Rocket's Raichu August 4th, 2009 6:51 AM

Nice original idea, but what happens when you run out of film?

ruby August 4th, 2009 7:46 AM

There is no film.

You start off with a photo album, once that has six photos in it any photos you take after that will be tossed away.

Later on in the game you can buy a memory card. After purchasing that if your album is full it'll save it to that, you can then access those photos by going to a PC.

Mages4ever August 4th, 2009 10:44 AM

Here's an idea.
You know the Pokemon Girafarig?
Well, you could do something like, you get assigned to go to a Savannah or something and it's the main habitat of Girafarig.
So, you are hired to take pictures of the Girafarig. The bigger (higher level) you get, the more you are payed.
