G/S/C - Common Pokemon Challenge

Gold/Silver/Crystal Challenge – Common Pokemon Challenge

Yes, this is the first topic I’ve started since I joined in 2007. And yes, it’s another G/S/C challenge. I worked on this for a good while, so I hope it’ll be a decent challenge. The main point of this challenge is to beat the game using common, early-game Pokemon. As well, there are restrictions on the number of Pokemon you can have on your main team, just to make things more difficult. I even added a few optional restrictions, just in case I didn't make this challenge hard enough. ;)

Rules:
-You can use the Gold, Silver or Crystal versions
-Emulators such as VBA are allowed
-No GameSharks
-Try to post updates as you advance through the game. Screenshots are nice, but not needed.
-Try to stay fairly active.

Team Restrictions:
-Maximum of 3 Pokemon on your main team. By “main team”, I mean the Pokemon that you use regularly in battles. You may train less than 3 if you want, but not more than 3.
-The major team restriction is that all 3 of your main Pokemon must be available before reaching Azalea Town. In other words, you’re stuck picking from Pokemon that appear in the following areas:
-Routes 29, 46, 30 and 31
-Sprout Tower
-Ruins of Alph
-Route 36 (Crystal only)
-Route 32
-Union Cave
-Route 33
-You can only catch Pokemon that appear in the tall grass, or on the main pathways of caves/dungeons. No Headbutting trees, no fishing, no Surfing.
-You are allowed to use your starter as one of your main team Pokemon, if you want to.

To make things simple, here are the Pokemon you can pick from:

~Gold Version~
Spoiler:
Chikorita or Cyndaquil or Totodile
Pidgey
Rattata
Sentret
Hoothoot
Caterpie
Metapod
Spinarak
Bellsprout
Gastly
Unown

Ledyba
Bellsprout
Gastly
Unown
Hoppip
Mareep
Wooper
Ekans
Geodude
Onix
Zubat
Jigglypuff
Spearow

~Crystal Version~
Spoiler:
Chikorita or Cyndaquil or Totodile
Pidgey
Rattata
Sentret

Bellsprout
Gastly
Growlithe
Unown
Ekans
Hoppip
Wooper
Sandshrew
Geodude
Onix
Zubat
Phanpy
Spearow

-You can have as many HM Slaves as you want – these don’t count towards your main team. The restrictions for main team members don’t apply to HM Slaves – you can catch these Pokemon whenever and wherever you want. The only thing is, you can’t use these HM Slaves in any battles.

The Challenge ends when you’ve defeated Red at Mt. Silver, after getting 16 badges.

Alternate Common Pokemon Challenge:
-Instead of training 3 or fewer main Pokemon, train a full team of 6 Pokemon. No more, no less.
-As before, you can only train Pokemon available to you before reaching Azalea Town.

Optional Restrictions - try a few of these out if you want a bigger challenge, but they’re not necessary.
-All main team Pokemon are the same type
-Train the first three Pokemon you run into, even if two or all of them are the same kind of Pokemon
-No TMs used on any of your main team Pokemon
-Instead of catching HM Slaves, teach your main team Pokemon HMs
-Don’t keep your main team Pokemon more than 2 levels apart from each other at any time
-Don’t equip your main team Pokemon with items at any time

If you want to join the challenge, you may use this form if you'd like:

This sounds great! I have a few questions, cause I never did this kind of thing before.
1. Can you evolve the pokemon? If not, instead of Hoppip I will have Jigglypuff.
2. Can you use a different untrained pokemon as a "sacrifice" pokemon, sending it out and healing your main pokemon, not using any moves at all with the sacrifice?

I'll be starting sometime this week.

I don't plan on attempting this challenge. (sorry, too busy :knockedou)

but something I've learned from the challenges I have completed in the past is that the fewer the Pokemon you have, the easier every trainer/leader seems. Even if you have the worst type coverage, if you only are training 2-3 Pokemon, they are going to be a good 5-15 levels higher than everything else, assuming you battle everyone you see. So a challenging stipulation would be you have to fight with a party of six, at least I'd think so. You can totally disregard this if you want. :P

BassFace August 1st, 2009 11:28 AM

Actually, that is a very good idea, and I agree. I once attempted a Double Pokemon Challenge, and though I only had two Pokemon on my team, I still had no trouble with any trainer because my Pokemon were overleveled.

I originally chose the limit of 3 so that trainers would have very few types of Pokemon to choose from on their main battling teams, but having to train a full team of 6 common Pokemon seems like a good challenge as well. For the time being, I will add this as an "alternate" challenge that people can try instead of using a team of 3, but I'll also leave the team of 3 option open.

Yes, you can evolve your Pokemon. ;)

Quote:

2. Can you use a different untrained pokemon as a "sacrifice" pokemon, sending it out and healing your main pokemon, not using any moves at all with the sacrifice?
Yes, that sounds acceptable, though I'd use the "sacrifice Pokemon" as a last-resort option only. This is a challenge, after all. ;D

I'll be away tonight, so I'll probably be starting this challenge tomorrow.

xSeduction August 1st, 2009 4:17 PM

I'll be sure to take this challenge once I'm done with my GSC monotype challenge, as I only have a copy of Crystal.. Although I could use an emulator.. Huh. I may do that. We'll just have to wait and see. :)

BassFace August 2nd, 2009 4:49 PM

I've started the challenge myself, but I can't get too far tonight, as one of my main team Pokemon can only be caught during the morning or daytime. So, I just got through the introductory stuff for tonight. I'll catch Sentret tomorrow and continue on. :D

I guess I might try this once I have time on my hands... Why is route 36 not included in gold and silver?

Because there was no patch of grass there, it was just Soodowoodo but in Crystal they added the patch of grass.

BassFace August 3rd, 2009 2:12 PM

I guess I'll keep on going with my own file...

-Headed up Route 30, fought all the trainers there
-Arrived in Violet City, healed up, headed for the Gym

-Received the Zephyr Badge and TM31, Mud-Slap!

-Fought all the Grunts in Slowpoke Well
-As an epic finish to the battle with the “leader” of the Grunts, all three of my Pokemon leveled up and evolved following the battle. (As a side note, this is the longest I’ve ever kept Cyndaquil before evolving it…)
-Dropped in at Kurt’s, received a Lure Ball from him, gave him a White Apricorn to turn into a Ball
-Took a stroll over to the Azalea Town Gym
-Fought a couple of Bugsy’s underlings
-Saved the game in the Azalea Town Gym

Hmm. Since I seem to be making absolutely no effort to get a life, I'll begin this challenge on an emulator tomorrow.
I already know which Pokemon I'll use, but I won't spoil it for anyone until I post my updates.
To be on the safe side, I'll go with a grass type, a water type, and a fire type though. :rambo:

WisherWisherWish August 4th, 2009 6:08 AM

Well I kinda already did this thing on a whim a week ago.
But I still have Red to beat.

I'm only using Bellsprout in my battles, the rest are HM slaves.

BassFace August 4th, 2009 9:29 AM

Level 92…?
Are you starting the game over from the beginning, or just picking up before the battle with Red? When you start a new challenge, you should really start off from the beginning of the game. Raising just a Bellsprout, however, is fine.

~August 4th, 2009~

-Beat the rest of Bugsy’s underlings, then followed up with Bugsy
-Received the Hive Badge and TM… *goes to check* …49, Fury Cutter!
-Went to the Ilex Forest, chased that idiot Farfetch’d around until I caught him
-Received HM01, Cut! (great…)
-Togepi hatched from its egg
-Took a long stroll back to New Bark to show the Prof, received an Everstone for a reward
-Headed back out to Route 29, received a Pink Bow from Tuscany (that Tuesday person), gave it to Furret to hold
-Deposited Togepi in the nearest available PC
-Caught two Bellsprouts on Route 32, one to trade to that guy for an Onix, and the other to use as my Flash/Cut HM Slave™
-Traded one of my Bellsprouts for that Onix, then deposited Onix in the PC to keep Togepi company
-Taught my remaining Bellsprout Flash and Cut
-Returned to that charcoal place, received Charcoal from the apprentice (3 guesses which Pokemon I gave it to)
-Headed back to the Ilex Forest
-Received TM02, Headbutt, from the guy shaking the tree
-Received TM12, Sweet Scent, from that lady in the north gate of Ilex Forest
-Fought the trainers on Route 34
-Arrived in Goldenrod City
-Borrowed a bike from the Bike Shop
-Went to the Radio Tower, completed the quiz to get a Radio Card for my PokeGear
-Went up north to Route 35 to fight some trainers
-Saved the game at Route 35

~August 5th, 2009~

-Went to the Goldenrod Underground and fought the trainers there
-Headed out to Route 35 again; fought the rest of the trainers there (or so I thought... turns out I missed one)
-Fought the two policemen standing guard at the National Park Gate and the Daycare
-Fought the trainers in National Park
-Fought the trainers on Route 36
-Got the mail-carrying Spearow from that guard in Goldenrod’s north gate
-Took a LONG hike out to Route 31 to deliver the mail
-Received TM50, Nightmare, as my rather crummy reward (I don’t think any of my main team Pokemon can even learn it)
-On the way back to Goldenrod, stopped at the Ruins of Alph to do that Kabuto puzzle
-Eventually made it back to Goldenrod City, went to fight one trainer I missed on Route 35
-Went to the Goldenrod City Gym, saved the game there
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d93/Ratiasu_0380/SaveGame050809.png

Also, I will be using the following restriction (from the list of optional restrictions) from now on in my game:
-Don’t keep your main team Pokemon more than 2 levels apart from each other at any time
I’ve actually been doing my best to follow this from the beginning of the game, but I’ve decided to make it an official restriction to my game file now.

My Current Rockin' Team:
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d93/Ratiasu_0380/Team050809.png

Proof that my team has an oddly high male-to-female ratio:
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d93/Ratiasu_0380/genderone-sidedness.png
(Yes, I did trade off one of the Bellsprouts, but the ratio is still 3:1. ;))
