This is Scarf's Pixel Portfolio Again

Welcome.

Thank you for viewing my fabulous humble collection of pixel work. Some of what you see below was made for hacks and other games, but mostly I do this for the fun of it. Please don't steal, but feel free to leave comments, constructive criticism, requests, insults, family recipes and anything else you can think of.

Thanks to everyone who responds. You're most definitely awesome.
(probably)

Wow, these are really great. I don't know what to say.
You really know when and when not to checkerboard.

Flygon999 August 13th, 2009 9:54 AM

Those...are...awesome. I am speechless.

Could I use your fakemon sprites, and the D/P/Pt region styled map?

Thank you. I'm just pretending to know what I'm doing, though.

Thanks, but for now they're going to remain for show only. Sorry.

TehSquidly August 13th, 2009 3:34 PM

Those are great! How long have you been doing spriting/art?

Flygon999 August 13th, 2009 3:37 PM

That's ok. Just shoot me a PM whenever they are available =)

Ray Maverick August 14th, 2009 5:13 AM

The fakemons are amazing, they only need a basic idea with them. The shading is, perfect. And the world maps are great too, but the South part of the Sinnoh map is kinda empty. D=
Keep up! =>

Thank you. I've been working since I came to this site.

Yay, critical response. Yeah, there is a glaring gap at the map's bottom. I based the D/P/P map on a piece of real geography, but it wasn't the best choice I could have made. If/when I get around to touching it up I'll definitely put an island or something there.

By basic idea do you mean giving them names and blurbs and that sort of thing?

Esper August 18th, 2009 1:23 AM

Update! A few more D/P style maps which should be better than my first one.

First one done for Curt_09. Second one done for fun.

Seriously? You've only been spriting for two months? That's unbelievable; if it's true. ;S

Anyway, your sprites are all brilliant. I especially like your "sea cucumber" sprite because it just looks so smooth. The black outlines add that extra roughness to make the sprite look a lot more distinct and better. It looks like it came right out of a Mother game. ;o

I like how you've based your sprites off of random objects, like an amplifier, or a key, or a pair of pajamas. A few of them need work; mainly the bull, the amp, the key and the jellyfish. All I can say is to work on your outlines on most of them. ;)

I thought my bull and amp were some of my better ones. I guess that's why I ask for others' opinions. Okay. Outlines. Check.

Seriously. Two months, though I've done other computer art stuff before and I'm a perfectionist patient, so don't think I'm some spriting prodigy. It took me a lot of time to make those.

Thanks. Didn't think I was putting in more than an average number.

Here's the update, a couple of tiny badges:

Looks pretty damn awesome. For the Fakemon: A teeny tiny bit of polishing on the outlines. I'll go in order:

Spoiler:
Sea Cucumber: I really love the sea cucumber. Maybe make the end of the "tail" have a little lighter outline. Now you've got an almost black outline AND a dark shade right beside it. Or make the dark shade cover a little larger part.

Rat: The flower on the rat's tail needs a little stronger outline on the light part and on the body a little lighter on the dark parts.

Bull: This is maybe just me, but the arms don't look symmetrical. One arm becomes larger towards the hand in a slightly curvy way, and the other just goes straight.
Maybe add a darker shade going "behind" the head since your light-source seems to come straight at it.

Marimo: The "hands" maybe a little rounder?

Amp: The round mark on the stomach needs a lighter outline.

Goat: Hmm... Enlarge the light area so that it doesn't just follow the outline? I don't know. Looks good.

Pajamas: Not much to say here, round the outline more.

Key: This was my favorite. BUT give the other parts than the eye more shading. As you see the part with the eye is half dark, half light? Make the other parts follow the light-source.

Jellyfish: Outline is good here, but a little jagged on the lower body between the legs (if a jellyfish can have legs). On the dark red part in the middle (with all the tentacles), maybe make the ends sharp instead of flat?

Spider: Make the green parts follow a light source. The golden leaf on the head needs a stronger outline.

Dragon/Dinosaur: Avoid dithering, use a shade instead. The outline is a bit jagged at the neck, and too black. Use dark gray or a dark color. Smoothen the outline up, give the tail a darker look, and smoothen the lightest shade on the neck a bit.

Deep water creature: Spread the dark outline a bit more, not just on one side. The outline is pretty awesome except for one little spot in the Mid-Low right. Smoothen that up.

Did I mention these are all awesome? If you need images to explain all this, please tell me. These are all superb, just a few minor complaints.

You are one of the best spriters I've seen lately. Keep up the awesome work!

Luka S.J. August 22nd, 2009 6:06 AM

I like the fakemon, they look very much alive so I could kinda imagine them in real life. Although the amp one scares me, it looks at me like it's going to shoot me with a cannonball.

It's like I was blind to everything you've pointed out. Or maybe I didn't want to see. Thank you for all of that. I really appreciate the level detail you went to. I think I've understood everything.

I don't suppose I can hold off on fixing those outlines and shaded areas now.

I suppose realism is better than looking fake, even though they're fakemon. Thank you and don't worry, no cannonballs here.

Esper August 26th, 2009 12:33 AM

Update! Some retouched sprites with the originals for comparison. I will try to get all of them touched up eventually.

http://www.pokecommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4339&pictureid=31643
Changed the shading and outlines.

http://www.pokecommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4339&pictureid=31642
Changed the colors a bit, the angle of the head, the shape of the tail, and the outlines. And gave it teeth.

http://www.pokecommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4339&pictureid=31641
Smoothed out some of the rough edges.

Chesu August 26th, 2009 1:10 AM

Haha, wow... I remember in early June, when you said you'd made Shuntose using one of my tutorials... you've gotten a lot done since then! I especially like Dazetail... it kind of makes me wish I'd given Marchare a more jerboa-esque design. You also seem to have a knack for naming them the way Nintendo of America does; changing the names from Japanese, Marimon would probably have been one of the ones they left alone.

The only real problem I see is with outlines. The outlines on Mintorn's arms and Jellusk's tentacles get kind of iffy where thin, and there are a few spots on Marchase that look jaggy... though that may be due to the way it's shaded.

Unrelated to this thread... Location: ジパング? Puttin' on the old world charm, eh?

Old world charm indeed. I'm glad you enjoyed the names, too. I spent more time than I probably should have coming up with them. And I was thinking more kangaroo rat than jerboa, but they're not really that different.

Like a wolf you've targeted the weakest of my herd. Jellusk and Marchase are likely to need overhauls whereas the rest are probably okay with touch-up work. Outlines seem to be my weak point :\ I think I'm getting better though.

Seriously, you can't undervalue a good tutorial.

Esper September 3rd, 2009 2:52 AM

Updating to keep my dying thread alive.

As per suggestions, I did some outline work on this guy:
http://www.pokecommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4339&pictureid=32202

And raised an island or two on this map to fill it out:
http://www.pokecommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4339&pictureid=32201

New: Cool Trainer base with the leg from a Crush Girl, the arm from I-don't-remember, and quite a bit of scratch work.
http://www.pokecommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4339&pictureid=32203

More to come soon eventually!

Chesu September 3rd, 2009 10:39 AM

I recognize the right arm and torso of the FR/LG Cool Trainer, along with the Crush Girl's left leg and what looks like an R/S/E Breeder's left arm... but I really don't know about the other leg. The closest I could find is the R/S/E Camper's leg, but there are a half dozen other bare legs it could have been modified from, if it's not from scratch.

It's a nice sprite, especially for people who like cheongsams (i.e. me)... but there's one thing bothering me about it. Look at the hips under the dress.
http://www.pokecommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=4339&pictureid=32203
Now, look at the legs. Don't they seem a bit long and disjointed? Particularly the left leg... It doesn't really seem to flow from the hip.

That other leg might have once been from somewhere but I don't think anything from the original remains so I'm calling it scratched. You're right about that arm. That is definitely where I got it from now that I'm looking at the R/S/E sprites again.

I see what you mean about the legs and now I can't stop seeing it. I'm trying to learn how to scratch trainers so I started by fusing one to get my feet wet. I'll try applying more realistic anatomy to this one, but cross your fingers because I was always bad at figure drawing.

Thanks again for the input.

Nice job with the shading and coloring but for the left arm it's too straight it should show at least the elbow of her arm
