Rate this rag-tag deck.

So, like, I recently got back into Yu-Gi-Oh! after a two year hiatus from it. Thought I might take this one here for some rateage.

So, I built this deck out of all my old cards, meaning I don't have any of this new synchro-stuff (though I will get into this new stuff pretty soon) going on. I don't plan on going to any tournaments, so I'm obviously going by the Traditional Format.
And, I'm no expert deck builder, so don't be all OMG UR DECK SUX L0L. I need someone to point out the flaws, I can notice flaws in it.

Well, here's the list. Head over to Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia if you need to see the effects or w/e of some of these cards.

Deck total: 44
Extra Deck total: 1

Trap cards: 10
Spoiler:
Divine Wrath
Life Absorbing Machine
Magic Cylinder
Call of the Haunted
The Dragon's Bead
Backup Soldier
Dragon's Rage
Ultimate Offering
Blast with Chain
Shift

Magic/Spell cards: 11
Spoiler:
A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon
Dark Factory of Mass Production
Toll
Mountain
Brain Control
Polymerization
Stamping Destruction
Premature Burial
Mausoleum of the Emperor
Lightning Vortex
Monster Reborn

Monster cards: 23

Tribute required monsters -
Spoiler:
Summoned Skull
Blue Eyes White Dragon
Curse of Dragon
Armed Dragon LV5
Red Eyes Black Dragon

Non-tribute monsters -
Spoiler:
Troop Dragon x2
Spirit Caller
Gray Wing
Baby Dragon
Spear Dragon
Goddess with the Third Eye
Magician of Faith
Hane-Hane
Element Dragon
Masked Dragon x2
bombardment Beetle
Spirit Ryu x2
Winged Dragon of Ra, Guardian of the Foretress #1
Armed Dragon LV3
Luster Dragon

Fusion/Extra Deck monster(s):
Spoiler:
B. Skull Dragon

Tips, people? Like I mentioned before, flaws obviously exist in that deck. I'm thinking of removing the fusion involved cards altogether, too much trouble just to get one monster out.
With the lifepoint involved cards, I'm also thinking of removing them too. Maybe messenger of peace would work well, or maybe The Dark Door? I'm thinking of adding Graverobber to the traps.

This deck doesn't really cut it for Traditional Format. Traditional is just another subset of tournament format, only you can use otherwise banned cards. It's a bit more broken than Advanced Format, but every deck will basically have the same backbone containing cards like Cyber Jar and Raigeki, etc.

This deck is more suited for Casual Format, but I'm not saying much else.

Of the cards in your deck, many are too weak and can be replaced by more formidable cards. These include:

Dragon's Bead (outclassed by other Counter-traps, though they're all really expensive)
Life Absorbing Machine
Backup Soldier
Blast With Chain
Shift
Toll
Dark Factory of Mass Production
Polymerization (with this build)
Mausoleum of the Emperor
Curse of Dragon
Spirit Caller
Gray Wing
Baby Dragon
Hane-Hane (Penguin Soldier outclasses it)
Spirit Ryu
Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress #1

You've got something good going on here though, with Dragons and whatnot. They're a very formidable archetype. With some proper backup and more copies of some strategic cards, you can make something rather strong.

Cards I highly recommend:

Torrential Tribute
Solemn Judgement or Dark Bribe (Magic Jammer, Magic Drain, Seven Tools of the Bandit for cheaper alternatives)
Mirror Force
Heavy Storm
Neo-Spacian Grand Mole
Morphing Jar
Totem Dragon
Red Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon

If you are still playing Traditional, then use:
Raigeki
Change of Heart
Pot of Greed
Graceful Charity
Dark Hole
Harpie's Feather Duster
Run LIGHT and DARK type Dragons and use Chaos Emperor Dragon
Cyber Jar
Witch of the Black Forest

... Otherwise, remove Premature Burial and Call of the Haunted, because they are banned.

Cards I recommend:

Sangan
Gorz the Emissary of Darkness
Breaker the Magical Warrior
Mystical Space Typhoon

Cards you may consider:

Acid Trap Hole
Flute of Summoning Dragon and Lord of D.
Dragon's Mirror
Future Fusion (use this with 5-Head to dump any 5 Dragons to use with Dragon's Mirror or to summon Red-Eyes Darkness Metal or use Red-Eyes Wyvern's effect; also works with White Stone of Legend x3 to get 3x Blue-Eyes in your hand)
Five Headed Dragon
The Creator
Dark Armed Dragon
Decoy Dragon
Tyrant Dragon

You need more copies of:

Dragon's Rage (x2 maybe)
Stamping Destruction (run in 3x)

Of course the monsters are a toss-up. You could do without Summoned Skull. Also, a newer card that is absolutely amazing for Dragon (and I run in 3s) is Red Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon ( http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Red-Eyes_Darkness_Metal_Dragon ). It's easy to get out and has a gamebreaking effect. It's also good to use with Red Eyes Wyvern and other related cards.

You want to have a low amount of Traps, and a medium amount of Spells, and your Monsters should take up nearly half of your deck. Your Spell / Trap / Monster ratio is about right at the moment. Try to cut down 4 more cards to make it exactly 40. You don't have to, but it makes your deck run more efficiently.

Exactly the reply I was looking for. I have most of those cards, and I guess I could just buy the ones I don't. So, thanks! I'm sure the cards you recommend will help a lot.

And, about the cutting four cards, that shall help I'm sure. It doesn't feel right to have more than the 40 needed cards, right?

harig07 August 25th, 2009 8:44 AM

If you wanna use Dragons use the Hopeless Dragon deck. It's the best way to use Dragons, especially since they were untouched by the recent banlist (still think that if Lonefire was semi-limited REDMD should've been too). Otherwise I agree with Gym.

Gymnotide August 29th, 2009 1:52 AM

Can we get an updated deck list so we can check it out?

- - - - -

If you were wondering, Hopeless Dragon is a tournament-built deck that runs on high ATK or extremely strong effects. However, the downside is that (1) a lot of meta decks run a lot faster than it, (2) it's usually overpowered by Synchros, and (3) it's very expensive to make. edit Tested it and it relies a lot on luck heh :D

The pro is that (1) it is virtually unwreckable once you get the right cards out since your cards just keep coming back, and (2) Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon is just completely overpowered, heh.

Here's a deckdrop:

Dark Armed Dragon
Dark Horus
Dark Horus
Dark Horus
Judgement Dragon
Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon
Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon
Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon
The Dark Creator

As you can tell, it has a lot of high level monsters. You will use Trade-In and Allure of Darkness to use those high-levels to draw cards and Foolish Burial / Future Fusion / Armageddon Knight to drop your Dragons to the Graveyard. Once you have enough in there, there's a bunch of things you can do, i.e.
  • When you have 5 DARK in the Grave, summon Dark Creator and remove one to summon Dark Horus, Red-Eyes, or Phantom of Chaos.
  • When you have exactly 3 DARK, summon Dark Armed and nuke the field.
  • When you have Judgement Dragon in the Grave and Phantom of Chaos in the hand, use Judgement Dragon to wipe the field. At the End Phase, Judgement Dragon's effect mills your deck to help it flow better too.
  • Use Dark Creator to summon Dark Horus and use Dark Horus' effect to summon Armageddon Knight and use Armageddon's effect to drop DARK monsters to your Graveyard to Special Summon with Creator.
  • Use Phantom of Chaos on Dark Creator to Special Summon Red-Eyes onto Horus.
  • Use Phantom of Chaos and D.D.R. to combo up on the summoning. Better if you use Red-Eyes, so you get 4 (2800+ ATK) monsters for two cards.
  • Use Future Fusion to drop all your Red-Eyes, a Judgement Dragon and Horus to the Grave so you can use them all later on to summon each other or potentially use Phantom of Chaos' effect.
  • etc.

Yeah, though I have been considering a Hopeless Deck. I just haven't gotten the time to buy all the required cards.
(Though, thanks for that list of things I could do. I was honestly wondering how the hell to work it.)

Fusion Based Dragon Deck I've been working on: (but still haven't gotten around to buying the cards.)

Spoiler:
Lord of D.
Goddess With the Third Eye x3
The Light - Hex Sealed Fusion x2
The Dark - Hex Sealed Fusion x2
Lesser Fiend
Cave Dragon
Manju of Ten-Thousand Hands x2
Paladin of White Dragon
Black Luster Soldier
Blue Eyes White Dragon x3
Blue Eyes Shining Dragon
The White Stone of Legend x2
Red Eyes Black Dragon

Dragon's Mirror x2
Future Fusion
Polymerization x2
Scapegoat x2
Stamping Destruction x3
Super Polymerization x2
The Flute of Summoning Dragon x2
Black Luster Ritual
White Dragon Ritual
Fusion Gate

Return From the Different Dimension
DNA Surgery

Fusion Monsters:
Five Headed Dragon
Dragon Master Knight
Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon
B. Skull Dragon
King Dragun
Fiend Skull Dragon

^ Most of those are cards a friend of mine recommended. Any flaws in there? He just gave me a list of cards and told me to make the decklist.

Aside from the Hopeless Dragon Deck and that Fusion Deck right there, my friend sent me a text message with even more cards that he said would be good for dragon decks. Among this list are:

White-Horned Dragon
Dragonic Knight
Gandora the Dragon of Destruction

I already know what White-Horned Dragon does, so would building a deck to support its ability and cards to protect it. I'm pretty sure Gandora would also do good in this category?

Gymnotide August 29th, 2009 5:26 PM

Lord of D.
Goddess With the Third Eye x3
The Light - Hex Sealed Fusion x2
The Dark - Hex Sealed Fusion x2

Return From the Different Dimension
DNA Surgery

Fusion Monsters:
Five Headed Dragon
Dragon Master Knight
Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon
B. Skull Dragon
King Dragun
Fiend Skull Dragon

  • Lord of D. and Flute of Summoning Dragon -- These cards are worth of replacing. They're highly situational because the whole combo relies on (1) having a weak monster on the field, (2) having Flute in your hand and not having it countered, (3) having 2 Dragon-type monsters in your hand, and (4) chancing that your opponent doesn't have Torrential to demolish FOUR cards in one. Of course, if it works, then the combo becomes quite formidable.
  • Goddess with the Third Eye -- Replace these with King of the Swamps (not Beastking). They're better because they double up as Fusion Sage.
  • Hex Sealed Fusion -- I don't know how effective these really are. I have a feeling they would be better off as Polymerization, or something.
  • Cave Dragon and Lesser Fiend -- Cave Dragon is okay, but Axe Dragonute is better than it, from a standalone viewpoint. Don't run Lesser Fiend because you have Fusion puppets. tbh, Fiend Skull Dragon is overrated.
  • Black Luster Soldier -- Not worth using (even for Dragon Master because you have fusion puppets); hard to execute and takes too many resources for a so-so monster.
  • Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon -- This card will remain in your hand most of the duel and its use is limited even on the field. I say drop it for something with more field time.
  • Future Fusion -- Be sure to always target Five Headed Dragon with this; Graveyard presence is good :)
  • Fusion Gate-- You have a lot of Fusion cards already, so this won't be necessary.
  • DNA Surgery -- Worthless in this decktype. With such a low trap count, you should run 2/3 Royal Decree or 3x Dark Bribe or 3x Solemn Judgement.

I'll look at it again later. This is just topical view.

Alright, thanks again for the overview! I'll remake the desklist sometime today.
In the meantime, before I can get all those cards, I'm going to be playing with this deck:

Spoiler:

Temporary Deck:

Monsters: 18
Red-Eyes Black Dragon
Masked Dragon x2
Nightmare Penguin
Goddess with the Third Eye
Mystical Elf
Hane-Hane
Troop Dragon x2
Element Dragon
Spirit Ryu
Baby Dragon
Spear Dragon
Curse of Dragon
Blue-Eyes White Dragon (thinking of removing)
Luster Dragon
Summoned Skull
Mirage Dragon

Spells: 14
Polymerization x2
Premature Burial
Heavy Storm
Lightning Vortex
Monster Reborn
Fusion Sage
Nobleman of Crossout
Stamping Destruction x3
Tribute to the Doomed
Dragon's Mirror
Mystical Space Typhoon

Traps: 8
Compulsory Evacuation Device
Pikeru's Circle of Enchantment
Magic Jammer
Call of the Haunted
Dust Tornado
Counter Counter
Spell Shield Type 8
Sakuretsu Armor

Fusion monsters: 2
Thousand Dragon
B. Skull Dragon

I have exactly 40 cards right there in the temp. deck, and my aim was sort of to protect my dragons. Maybe adding Royal Decree to the traps would help?
Like I said though, only gonna be using that deck until I get Hopeless and Fusion.

Gymnotide August 30th, 2009 11:49 AM

With an 8 card trap count, it's not worth it to add Decree ;)

Always target Five Headed Dragon with Future Fusion and drop as many White Stone of Legends as possible, at least one Red-Eyes and anything else you like afterward. I was just able to do this with King Dragun out on the field with a Monster Reborn in tow, so I revived my Red-Eyes and used his effect + King Dragun to summon two Blue-Eyes to the field.

Blue-Eyes Ultimate is also ridiculously easy to get out with Red-Eyes chain summoning White Stone / Masked Dragon to help it out, etc.

edit Considering dropping the Decrees for Dragon's Rage / Bribe, but then I'd need to cut down some.
edit2 Just got rolled by Lightsworn
