I was YouTubing pokemon battles and ran across something called ShinyGold. I followed a few links and--voila!
A week later I was scripting basic events.

Ninja Caterpie September 4th, 2009 4:01 PM

My friend was BSing about a "Pokemon Sapphire Human wierd hack" that he made.

colcolstyles September 4th, 2009 4:38 PM

Well, to make a long story short, I found out about Emulation roughly two and a half years ago and I discovered ROM Hacking a little more than a year after that (May of 2008, to be precise). I think it was finals week and I was procrastinating studying so I started Googling "how to make your own pokémon game" and, after a hell of a lot of searching, found this place.
And I've been here ever since^^

Luck September 4th, 2009 6:12 PM

Long story short, I saw tamashiihiroka's(hopefully I spelled that right) videos and my curiosity got the best of me. Short, right?

Satoshi Ookami September 4th, 2009 10:45 PM

Through WAH.
I was kinda bored with III gen games so I was searching for something new.
And then I found WAH and Ruby Destiny, Shiny Gold and others.
Becuase WAH didn't have full games I tried to check other websites so I found PC.

No, he was saying that he made that hack that you play as a Pokemon and battle with humans.

SharpPoint September 4th, 2009 11:15 PM

I discovered Pokemon Naranja. Then with enough googling I found Pokecommunity.

Skully367 September 5th, 2009 1:09 AM

Well, it was quite a while ago, say...two years ago? I was searching youtube when I found tons of videos of weird fat guys in emerald. I think that was it anyway, lol.

Pokepal17 September 5th, 2009 7:02 AM

I found a Shiny Gold playthrough on YouTube and then I used google.

Same here... XD
I was surprised to see Naranja, a Pokemon hack... O.o

Then I played Quartz.

Cello September 5th, 2009 9:29 AM

My cousin was telling me about ShinyGold, and I was interested, so me and him sat down and played it.

We then looked up how to hack the roms. I found WAH this way. Then one day while I was googling for english guides I found pokecommunity. :)

Haha, same here dude. First thing I did was make my own hack series... then after awhile I found my way here.

5qwerty September 5th, 2009 3:11 PM

I played quartz, then I wanted to make something like that, so then I searched Pokemon Hacking Tools, and found Pokecommunity, and then blah, blah, blah.

thethethethe September 5th, 2009 6:29 PM

Found Emuation in about '05. I think I found Quartz, Chaos Black and Naranja soon after, maybe in '06. Then some R/B hacks. Got bored one day, found Shiny Gold and had to join here to download it.

NarutoActor September 5th, 2009 6:30 PM

haha is that how you got the creative name

thethethethe September 5th, 2009 6:36 PM

Well, I never planned on hacking and it was the first thing that popped into my head. I guess I've just stuck with it.

NarutoActor September 5th, 2009 6:40 PM

oh okay it fits you :D......

Mages4ever September 5th, 2009 6:43 PM

I was on Youtube one day, and I saw this thing called Pokemon Quartz, so looked into it and tried to figure out how they did it. I Google'd around and found here. Then I just stayed here.

jakerman999 September 5th, 2009 6:50 PM

I'm another who came in through tamashii's vids. popped in "edit pokémon roms" into my google bar and this was the first credible english site i found.

Integra Hellsing September 5th, 2009 11:58 PM

When Pokemon Red was released, I was spending pretty much time on the Game Boy Color and playing it. One day I had the great idea to create a Pokemon version where you are Team Rocket member, that tries to catch as many pokemon as possible, also trying to reach your dream to become a top leader of Team Rocket. Later on, about 3-4 years ago, I was doing mods for GTA:SA, one day via google I found that there was an GBA Emulator, so I did download it, and I found the ROMs, later on I searched through Google and I found the tools like Advance Map. I was doing some changes the whole time just to have some fun, or for my friends adding some new teleports or trainer scripts and Maps. That's how I have got involved into Pokemon ROM hacking.

Zero° September 6th, 2009 12:01 AM

Google and Youtube sure are your friends :D

Neo-Wolf September 6th, 2009 1:54 AM

First Pokemon Shiny Gold .
Then I came across a lot more hacks .
Then Pokecommuity .

874521 September 6th, 2009 2:02 AM

On youtube, there are people who are changing the maps and sprites.

SPEEDIE September 6th, 2009 2:04 AM

i was playing shiny gold, naranja (probably some others) and wondered how they did it
anyway googled it and volla i found some tools and pc

sab September 6th, 2009 7:47 AM

I have one word: "youtube". I saw people useing a-map and found wah. that then lead me to p.c.

Zeffy September 6th, 2009 7:59 AM

In Youtube, a hacker named Tamashihiroka has influenced me to Rom Hacking. That's pretty much it.

Father Ash September 6th, 2009 9:13 AM

Me and my friend were talking about pokémon and stuff then he brought up that he had found AdvanceMap on the internet and he had destroyed Saffron City and replaced it with a bunch of rocks which formed the shape of a crudely drawn gentleman's whoopsie. He isn't very sophisticated.

DestinyBender September 6th, 2009 12:29 PM

Hm. I believe I found out about hacking by Googling roms.

The first one I downloaded was ShinyGold (credit 2 zel)

i loved it so my hard drive is packed with roms & hacks.

Alice September 7th, 2009 12:50 AM

Looks like I'm not the only one that started with Tamashii's vids.

siper x September 7th, 2009 10:31 AM

my friend made a comedy on youtube by hacking, found wah, then i found this place.

DawnRyder September 7th, 2009 1:46 PM

I was poking around at some rom site and found Amarillo Solar. Then, I was looking for other Pokemon games and found out that Amarillo Solar was a hack. Wondering how they hacked it, I was browsing around and stumbled upon several hacking sites, like pkmnhackersonline.com.

Then I found Pokecommunity and have been here ever since.

NarutoActor September 10th, 2009 7:51 AM

pkmnhackersonline.com. oh that link docent work oh well its great seeing how all the best hackers found about about rom hacking especial fun nija catapie and thethethethe

Sarcastic Prince September 12th, 2009 6:06 AM

So... it came out like this: One day, my friend told me that there's a Pokemon Game with Gyarados as its cover, and I was curious. So then, my friend gave me a picture of it. (It has "Pokemon Quartz" as its title) I went to Serebii, and found NOTHING about Quartz. So then, I went to Youtube, and I found out that Quartz is a "fake" Pokemon Game. Then, I watched loads of videos about Quartz. Till one of them, said: If you want to Download this, go register in this Website: pokecommunity.com So I went in the community website, and I found out 'bout this place. I downloaded Quartz, and I had a great time. Days passed, until today, it is where I am, a proud member of Poke Community.

Ranger0684 September 16th, 2009 8:59 PM

I found rom hacking in a similar way to Mateo.

I was at an all day rehearsal with my amateur dramatics group, and I had a few months previous been playing Pokemon for the first time, and so we got on the conversation of it, it eventually led to some guy saying his friend had Pokemon Yellow on his computer. When I got home I dialled up the net and found no$gmb and pokemon blue. This got my interest in looking for Pokemon roms, which eventually led to finding some Pokemon Orange hacks by Dtyler, and Pokemon Generations by BG Translations. Onwards a few months I was looking for Pokemon game makers, it must have taken many weeks of searching before I found anything. The first programs I discovered were Thingy32 Mr. Clicks TileED, and Pokemap. I didn't join any forums until 2003 about a year after I had started ROM hacking and 2 years since I found out about Emulation.

Andrew McKenzie September 17th, 2009 2:49 PM

Honestly? I googled "New Pokemon Games" and found the original Pokemon Brown.
Through that, I found out about hacking, and through google yet again, I found Pokecommunity.
Hung around for a while, then disappeared, joined in 2007 and barely posted.
And now my posting is starting to pick up.

NarutoActor September 17th, 2009 3:34 PM

same here I knew about pc and I never register til I neaded to post my hack thread then I stoped posting than I started ansering questions in the simple questions thread and started posting a lot

Aljam September 17th, 2009 3:57 PM

I remember searching pokemon gold cheats on youtube. Then after browsing a bit i found pokemon shiny gold glithes and i was like wth? then eventually i found a vid showing more of SG and the link was to PC. The next part embarrases me...
...I tried to download shiny gold and found out i had to be a member. Made an account, looked at HSC hacks and played them. Later in the fall i decided to give ROM hacking a try. The rest is just history... (first romhack I was in was reign of fire, didnt go so well...)

0m3GA ARS3NAL September 17th, 2009 8:57 PM

Ahh, the good ol' days.
I was checking out Pokemon Diamond/Pearl vids before the game was released in the USA, and I came across a pic of a custom map, so I looked around on youtube, found a link to E-Map, and got it, looked up Scizz, and the Helmeted Rodent team, and found The Pokecommunity, and joined, became a nooblet, and that is the story of how I became me.

Ray Maverick September 23rd, 2009 5:58 AM

Yeah, someone in youtbe had a good video on where to find hacking tools. I followed the links(wah) and his advise, and i became a maniac hacker. XD

Then, i searched around Wah, i learnt about on going hacks, and then [i dont remember how] i clicked a link to a PC page. I started to like the forums, and i joined right away, using my nickname as username. [/offtopic] Sorry. XD

PatJamma October 10th, 2009 12:29 PM

hmm well i was googleing "gold and silver remakes" after i first saw those one pictures (the ones that were fake that got posted one april fools day) because i thought they were real and i really didnt find anything about it when looking for websites so i clicked images and one one of the first three pages i saw shinygold. i tryed to download it but it said i needed to register (and if it wasnt for that i would have never came back to PC) i download beta 4 of SG not knowing beta 5 was out because the link led me the older thread lol. a month passed and i found a link to beta 5 on a youtube video. a year later (i didnt always play it lol) and i got stuck in SG so googled "pokemon hacks" to try to find a different hack but no i found something greater i found PC! i logged in after a whole year and i sent a pm to Zel asking for help and ever sence then i have been going to PC almost every day!

NarutoActor October 10th, 2009 12:31 PM

haha, I also find my self log-on every day.

romancandle October 11th, 2009 12:00 PM

I was looking up "Let's Play" pokemon threads, and came across one called "Pokemon Opal". That sparked my interest in ROM hacks, so I googled for tools, came across here, and I've been fiddling with Advancemap and the like since. It's only been a week really >_>

dr4g0n12 October 11th, 2009 2:43 PM

I wanted to make a pokemon game, and found out about advance map.
Then i discovered that you needed a rom, and all the other tools for it.

NarutoActor October 11th, 2009 3:03 PM

Oh why dint you try the game devs. (shh between you and me I like rom hacking much more)

wizard... October 16th, 2009 1:10 PM

I was downloading roms and downloaded a hack of Zelda: Link's Awakening. I read about hacking, it was easy so I started.

TimeDialga33 October 16th, 2009 3:50 PM

I Found about rom hacking when i was making a fangame i thought it was a rom hack but it was a fangame and when i found out about shinygold when i learned about johto.

Hedgehogger October 16th, 2009 8:31 PM

Dude, it was like...late in December of 2006, almost the dawn of 2007. I was on this other forum called DGEmu.com, where you could download ROMs as a member. Well, at one point in a troubleshooting thread, someone mentioned something about hacking Pokemon games and something about Advance Map. The first hack I played was Pokemon Brown, which really sparked my curiosity on how to hack roms. One thing led to another, and next thing I know, I found this place.

DarthPika October 19th, 2009 4:25 PM

For me it was more of my brother Jailbreaking his itouch and putting Pokemon games on it. after that i started searching 'how to play Pokemon on the pc and found WAH and vba and played games for a while until i found PC and wanted to start hacking myself.

Zeta Sukuna October 19th, 2009 4:33 PM

Two words... Kaizo Mario. I watched a video of it, caught the words Super Mario World Rom Hack, and I searched it up. T'was a while before I joined here... yeah.

NarutoActor October 19th, 2009 5:57 PM

oh cool its nice to see people coming to rom hacking other than a pokemon hacks

Great Mazinger October 20th, 2009 1:10 PM

I'm pretty certain my knowledge of rom hacking began with Sonic based hacking (I stumbled across what was then the Sonic 2 Beta website and it's accompanying message boards), then diversifying into the various communities based around game series and rom hacking until I decided to grab an account here after making good use of the tutorial section.

bigtukker October 20th, 2009 1:22 PM

I once searched for 'making your own Pokémon game' at google

Skaisdead October 21st, 2009 10:04 PM

Super Mario World

Seriously, there are a ton of SMW hacks, as well as an entire website dedicated to it. I used to attempt hacking this game, but it became much too tedious to actually complete one, so I just made a graphics hack. Alternate Mario World is what I called it, but there were still a few better ones available.

TB Pro October 23rd, 2009 11:18 PM

I've been a member here since 2004. Back then, I didn't know of such things as hacking. I left for about a year in 2007, and when I came back an old friend mentioned hacking, so I looked it up on Youtube. I then proceeded to find TamashiiHiroka, and I got interested. I googled ROM Hacking, and what do you know, PC had such thing. It had been in front of me the whole time. I then proceeded to start hacking in early 2008., and I've been here ever since(except for the summers, of course, of course).

dragonarche November 1st, 2009 2:06 AM

when i joined here i soon discovered the little
Emulation section of the forms^^

Fire Blazer November 10th, 2009 7:31 PM

Four years ago or so a friend showed me some "editors" of sorts and I learned that games could be edited in many interesting ways.

Binary November 11th, 2009 8:07 AM

Well...I was on another forum and I saw a banner of a Pokemon Ice on a sig of one of the members. That's how I got linked to PC. It was actually Pokemon Ice, I think that made me want to hack. So after that I experimented a little and...poof...that was it.

Kudo November 11th, 2009 11:54 AM

I recall a couple years back I was playing FFVI (SNES) on an emulator and I somehow bumped into a FFVI Sprite Editor. It escalated into getting a Multi-Editor with it, until weeks later I was making my own enemy scripts. Months later I saw touhoumon and assumed it was just video editing...then looked closer, it was too smooth to be just good video editing. Started playing it, and it's actually only been very recently since I've started editing Pokemon ROMS myself.

Chevalier November 11th, 2009 2:27 PM

Zel's Shiny Gold! Played it then wanted to do hack myself.

Saiba Aisu November 11th, 2009 6:54 PM

I've played a few popular Pokémon hacks here and there, including Zel's gorgeous Shiny Gold, Never Black & White, and of course, the much-anticipated Ckret's Pokémon Toxic Purple. The example of these fantastic games inspired me to make an attempt of my own.

psychicboy November 11th, 2009 8:12 PM

I always wanted to learn how to hack, but never had the iniative. As soon as I googled hacking, My laziness was replaced with ideas... That's how I started..

Z34guy November 11th, 2009 8:45 PM

I searched google for how to play GB games on the computer and I stumbled across them. As soon as I found out about them, I thought, "Hey, most of these aren't bad". Honestly, I now play hack games more than official ones.

chrunch December 3rd, 2009 1:21 AM

I was on Youtube searching Pokemon when I discovered some videos on Pokemon hacks.
I wanted to make one so I Googled Pokemon hacks, found WAH then PC.

qwertyuiop1234567890 December 19th, 2009 6:02 PM

My story goes back a little bit... A year or so ago, spriting was my favorite thing in the world. Whenever I got bored I would make a splice or google for some cool sprites. On one such google trip, I found TR(Team Rockets Rockin). I was looking around and I found the section on fake pokemon games (Quarts, Choas Black, hacks like those). That sparked my interest, so I started googling 'fake pokemon games'. After looking at tons of games, I thought, 'Hey, couldn't I do that?' and that was the start of my adventure. I found Pokecommunity soon after that, and this place has been an invaluable source of tools and resources ever since.

remake December 20th, 2009 10:18 PM

I've been roleplaying with my friends for years about variants to the Pokemon games/show. (In fact, I have a 5 MB text file listing pretty much all the known mechanics of all the existing Pokemon games, changes between the versions, and my on-paper attempts to balance/patch them all.) When I discovered the tools for hacking games a few months ago, I decided to try my hand at realizing my plans.

Venn364 December 23rd, 2009 12:15 AM

I wanted the be able to play the old Pokemon TCG on GBC but since it isn't sold anymore and my brother got me an emulation of it. After Emerald came out I couldn't afford a copy (I have a genuine copy now second hand) so I went on google and got VBA and the Emerald ROM. One of the other ROMS was a hack (I forget it's name) so after a bit of googling I found advanced map and other tools as well as PC and after finally bothering to get a userlogin here I am making my own hack.

pokefreak2 December 23rd, 2009 1:23 AM

i was playing shiny gold from WAH one day then i searched it up again and a different site came into sight thats how i found PC :) i love it here best forums ever :D

ShadowForce_G December 23rd, 2009 1:41 AM

From Zel's ShinyGold. I search on youtube about gold in gba. Someone give me the link. I think he is apo00. Then, same as pokefreak2. I found this awesome site (PC).

samtheman1x December 23rd, 2009 8:12 AM

I discovered pokemon brown a while back. I was amazed at what coolboyman was able to do. Then I discovered pokecommunity, and now I am in the process of making my own hack.

pokemonhackers January 4th, 2010 7:19 AM

Well I went on google and all and youtube and also what you said

Theofilaktos January 6th, 2010 2:02 AM

558122_DG January 11th, 2010 4:16 AM

shiny gold. <---thats my explaination figure teh rest out :)

gamesharkhacker January 22nd, 2011 1:40 AM

Along time ago, I played gba games a lot, such as Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, Leafgreen, Emerald... I started to want to play games ive never been able to before, like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon or Pokemon Gold or Crystal. I then found out that you could play Gba games on the computer via emulator. I soon became bored of those and found out about Gameshark codes. I had great fun stealing other trainers pokemon and buying Master balls at a Mart etc. I then started my video hack series called Pokemon: Hacked which was made up of videos of me playing Pokemon Red with gameshark codes. I soon got bored of this and found out about: ROM Hacking!!! I joined PC soon after and took up Music composing for GBA roms, and I went searching around for a Hacking team or two to put my GBA musical knowledge into something useful: GBA Pokemon hacks!! I also do other things. I can make banners, script, map, Overworld editing and a bunch of other little things. I'm currently working as Music Composer for Pokemon Morganite, and i also make the Pokemon Hack series called Pokemon: The Hack Files that I run through YouTube. I still play GBA games on my Gameboy advance and I still love it. That, my friend, is how I found out about ROM Hacking..

colcolstyles January 22nd, 2011 11:19 AM
