Is there any way to zero out a wep key?
My friend is giving me a wireless router but she forgot her wep key and lost the paper she had written it down on. is there anyway to either recover the wep key or wipe it so I can make a new one? All I actually know about the router is that its a Belkin dont know the model or anything.

You can hold down the reset button at the back until it resets, or you can look at the bottom of the router (the WEP passkey should be there if its factory settings) or you can connect it directly to your computer and go to either: 10.1.1.1, 192.168.1.1.
Check the bottom of the router for its model, and check online for its ip adress. If your friend has changed IP adress, resetting the router will fix that aswell. |
Well, it should be one of the numbers on a barcode under the router. You could try spambotting the connection wizard, but even that would take time >_>
...Yeah, check under the router. |
spambotting the connection wizard is very stupid to do :/
It will take longer then you will be alive for to spambot the wep key and get it lol |
The WEP key will be on the router itself, either on a sticker or printed right on the plastic.
If that fails, Google aircrack and hope you have a compatible card. |

You could look into "hacking" it by replacing it with open source firmware :O
I say "hacking" because all Linksys router use a Linux kernel underneath, which makes them open source most of their stuff. |
The WEP key is something that sits inside the OS of the device itself and can only be obtained if you log onto the router. You'll want to get a crossover cable in order to access the device. You'll need to get the router's IP Address, which is generally located on the bottom of the device. It will ask you to enter a user name and password (for Linksys, the default is admin for both the un & pw). If you can't log onto the router this way, then there should be a little reset button that you can push with something such as a paperclip. If you push and hold the reset for about 10 seconds, it will reset the router to factory defaults, then you can put in your own SSID and WEP key.

Every router has a reset button. The procedure differs by brand but generally, holding the reset button down for 10 seconds will restore the router to factory defaults. If the router comes from an ISP, some of them will, as mentioned, have the default WEP key on a label stuck to the router but a reset is still probably a good idea.
