That's what I'm thinking of getting after my birthday. I might have enough spare money.

Because they don't have much processing power and are designed for just browsing the net. Some people need laptops powerful enough for software for certain courses.

yeah, I need one for GCSE IT

I recommend looking into a brand like Acer or ASUS. Less well known, but still on par with HPs, particularly with ASUS, which makes motherboards for desktops as another part of its business. And low end Dells are pretty crappy, to be honest.

i thought ACER were rubbish. havent heard of asus. thanks though

I would get the best used mac laptop(old powerbook or something) that i can in that budget, but thats not probably not a good idea.

I'm on an Acer Aspire One while typing this, and I think that the Acer Aspire model with the 120gb+ hard drive is something that might be suitable. Because runs pretty much everything I throw at it, be it The Gimp, Jedi Academy, Battlefront I, Visual C#, Visual C/+/++, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Win XP Home Edition, Ubuntu, Debian, and pretty much everything that doesn't require more than two 1.6ghz CPUs or more than 0.98 gb of RAM.

I've attached an image which shows the specs of the AA1, so yeah.

That's not a good idea at all, since Macs cost a lot more for similar hardware specs, and you'd be buying a used machine, which isn't always guaranteed to be in the best of shape.

I think you should try the Compaq Armada 1530DM. I love it. (b'')b

I would reccomend the Dell Latitude D430 (my laptop) but that seems to have been discontinued. Nuts.

For what it's worth, the Latitude 2100 seems to be very good and is withing your budget. Look here.
