I'm gonna try to throw my hat into the competitive battling arena of GenV...something I haven't done since the early days of R/S. XD

The first team I wanna build is a Sandstorm team. So far, I'm trying to breed a curse Larvitar and I've got a Sand Rush Excadrill and a spikes/stealth rock Ferrothorn planned out on paper. I'm considering options for the other three slots.

Would Golurk make a decent spin blocker? Should I throw in a Magnezone for special sweeping? What's another good wall to consider? What's another good supporter to consider?

R.K 9 April 29th, 2011 3:27 PM

okay, so I've decided to use this moveset for exeggutor:

Exeggutor @Lum Berry
Ability: Harvest
- Giga Drain/Energy Ball/Leaf Storm
- Rest
- Leech Seed
- Sleep Powder

I decided to go for the more defensive side after all, however, I still want to include a grass type attack to prevent being taunt bait, and to handle waters such as swampert. not sure which one to use though; giga drain is there for extra recovery, energy ball for a standard power attack with good pp, and leaf storm for huge power. I'm considering choosing leaf storm because as it's a more defensive set then I won't be using it that often anyway, therefore the sp.atk drop won't be too bad.
rest is there to recover full hp and the sleep will be cancelled out with lum berry, leech seed for more recovery and sleep powder to make it even easier.
however, one thing I must ask. what nature and evs should I use? I was thinking of setting max hp then adding evs into sp.atk and both defenses, although nature I was completely clueless with.

Um, you asked this question before about a page or so back, and it's already been answered, iirc there's quite a few Harvest set's roaming around on the last page.

only this time I chose to use a different moveset. the other question was asking what moves I should use, but I changed my mind.

edit: actually, ignore this, I think I know what to use now.

Between Houndoom, Arcanine and Charizard, which would you choose? I'm considering a sweeper fire Pokemon to play with. Arcanine has a good base stat to start with, but the speed is easily surpassed by Houndoom. Charizard can have a nice moveset and skill (Blaze), but the water, thunder and rock weakness is pretty overwhelming.

Golurk is not spectacular defensively. Magnezone isn't really useful as sand teams have no trouble with Steels at all. If you want special sweeping, use Thundurus as it's the premier 5th gen special sweeper. Landorus is a sweeper to consider in sand as it's incredibly powerful and useful, and as far as another wall to consider you should take a look at Jellicent as it functions incredibly well with Ferrothorn, resisting every time iirc save Ground (which you might look at Gliscor or Landorus for).

...out of those three? Arcanine is the most competitively viable. Extremespeed, Wild Bolt (I cba to remember eng name rn), Flare Blitz and coverage/Morning Sun make it incredibly useful, especially in sun. The other two are really just flat-out outclassed.

Well, Are you playing in the sun?? Charizard did get a useful Dreamworld ability this gen, Solar Power! Which gives him plenty of power~
And Houndoom does have the good boosting move of the bunch, Nasty Plot. Give him Hidden Power Ground and you are good!
But Arcanine is usually the best choice. Flare Blitz, Wild Bolt, Close Combat, Morning sun!

Ok, so I just got Pokémon Black recently and now that I've completed the main storyline, I'd like to start getting into competitive play. There's obviously a LOT that has been added to the game since Generation IV...is there somewhere I can go to read up on all this stuff so I can figure it all out before I just try to jump in? I'm not new to competitive battling, just to Gen V - but there's so many new possibilities and combinations that I just don't know where to start. Suggestions/advice anyone? Thanks.

(If you feel this isn't really the place to get into a detailed discussion on this, feel free to message me privately or something instead.)

Well you could start by reading up on things here.

We have two threat lists, both detailing what pokemon are most commonly used in gen V here and here.

We also have a resource thread, located here, for anything else you could possibly need. Hope it helps.

Well last gen I EVd a Celebi and transferred it to Black. Will this set still do good:

Celebi @ Life Orb
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 Sp.Atk / 6 Sp.Def / 252 Speed
Nature: Timid
- Nasty Plot
- Grass Knot
- Psychic
- Earth Power

And I'd also like to use Lugia in my Uber team. Will this work

Lugia @ Leftovers
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 66 Defense / 192 Speed
Nature: Timid
- Roost
- Reflect
- Ice Beam
- Light Screen

Scizor

I take it there is no one out there who knows any Scizor builds then.

Thanx Nom

I use this Scizor frequently...

Scizor @ Choice Band
Trait: Technician
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Speed
Nature: Adamant
- U-Turn
- Pursuit
- Super Power
- Bullet Punch

Just a normal CB Set, U-Turn for scouting and putting a check on Reuniclus. Pursuit to trap Choiced Pokemon hitting you for a NVE move or something. Super Power is to hit T-Tar on the switch and hittin Excadrill. Bullet Punch is for revenging and sweeping late game.

.Aero May 1st, 2011 7:50 AM

Scizor wants these EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Spe

With 252 Speed, he's too slow already to really be doing much with that investment. This HP spread makes him better at taking dragon attacks that he can safely switch into and hit back with bullet punch (which, as his most enticing move, doesn't require any speed EVs).

hokala May 1st, 2011 8:33 AM

I just leveled my Druddigon to 45. He wants to learn Dragon Tail. His current moveset is:
Flash Cannon
Crunch
Dragon Claw
Revenge

Should I teach him Dragon Tail? If so what move should I replace?

You already have Dragon-type STAB in Dragon Claw, but you can run it over Flash Cannon since Drud's Special Attack is abysmal at best. Also, just know that any moveset works in-game really. :D;

Just wanted to point out that no legitimately good player is going to switch Tyranitar into Scizor ever. Superpower is more for Heatran switch-ins than the two you mentioned.

Thing is Superpower is only Gen IV so what do i do there? and should EV a Scyther or evolve it straight away then EV

Detox May 1st, 2011 12:48 PM

You can either transfer one over with Superpower, or use Brick Break.

Whichever floats your boat. I presume this is ingame, but if not, Mandibuzz is probably the most useful.

The Eviolite would work on Scyther, right?

I'm thinking of using it in my 4v4 doubles rain team. While it seems like a strange item for a Scyther, it has base 80 defenses. Combined with the rain taking away its fire weakness, Scyther can help counter the weaknesses of other team members (1/4 Grass resist, Ground immunity) as well be a physical sweeper on the team.

Yay/nay?

Stunfisk

Is there any viable moveset to use with Stunfisk in NU Metagame? If yes, I can't find any but I really like the herp a derp fish :D

I'd got for Nay. |: I've heard about people using Eviolite Scyther, and it doesn't work out. Besides, it still has a huge x4 weakness to Rock moves + Stealth rock, Flying moves still take it down along with Electric and Ice moves. To many weaknesses.

Stunfisk @Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 6 SDef
Bold Nature
Ability: Sand Veil/Static
-Discharge
-Toxic
-Earth Power/Protect
-Pain Split

It was posted a page back. |:

However, Stealth Rocks aren't generally a problem with 4v4 doubles. But point taken.
