mondays suck October 4th, 2009 11:06 AM

I finally continued a bit now. Bred a Smoochum with the Jynx i caught (Smoochum learns Psychic by level up and Jynx apparently doesnt). Currently trying to train Smoochum, it's about Lv.10 now.

FireRed Supergiant October 4th, 2009 7:13 PM

this looks like so much fun! i was about to restart silver and build a psychic team, so this should be perfect. only drawback is i wanted to use lugia and exeggutor. rules exclude legendaries and i was gonna trade a leaf stone to evolve exeggcute, but that's out so i'll just wait to do that until kanto.

but yeah, put me down for a psychic run!

EDIT: First update, didn't want to double post
--Chose Cyndaquil as starter
Retrieved egg, defeated rival, delivered egg
Arrived in Violet City, proceeded to Ruins of Alph
Caught A-shaped Unown, deposited Cyndaquil
Determined Unown-A to have Fighting-type hidden power
Caught B-shaped Unown
Determined Unown-B to have Rock-type hidden power (PERFECT for first two gyms)
Cleared Sprout Tower
Defeated Gym #1: Falkner
Received EGG from Elm's aide
Proceeded to entrance at Union Cave

Current Party:
1. Unown-A: Level 9 (Hidden Power = Fighting)
2. Unown-B: Level 11 (Hidden Power = Rock)
3. Egg

I've never used Unown in my party before. I love the HP type distribution I got, since the only existing type combination found in Gen 2 games which resists both is Ground/Poison, and I won't be facing any Nidoking/Nidoqueen before I get my Slowpoke at the well.

Bedtime

I beat the rest of the game only using Lapras because it covers pretty much anything and Sneasel, which covers two important things Lapras doesnt: Electric and Psychic. And now, it's...

Time for Red!
Spoiler:

Sneasel vs Pikachu
Sneasel dug a hole, Pikachu used Charm, missed
Sneasel used Dig, -95% left Pikachu used Thunder, missed
Red used Full Restore, Sneasel used Slash (-45%)
Sneasel dug a hole, Pikachu used something i was clicking too fast, missed
Sneasel used Dig, KOs Pikachu

Lapras vs Charizard
Charizard used Fire Spin, missed lol
Lapras used Surf, -95%
Charizard used Flamethrower, 199/289
Lapras used Surf, KOs Charizard

Sneasel vs Espeon
Sneasel used Shadow Ball, -55%
Espeon used Swift, 112/152
Sneasel used Shadow Ball, KOs Espeon
Sneasel leveled up, quite an unimportant level-up

Sneasel vs Snorlax
Sneasel used Iron Tail, crit, -20%
Snorlax used Body Slam, KOs Sneasel

Lapras vs Snorlax
Lapras gets Leftovers recovery, 217/289
Lapras used Ice Beam, -30%
Snorlax used Body Slam, 129/289, paralyzed
Lapras gets Leftovers recovery, 147/289
Snorlax used Body Slam, 56/289, Lapras is fully paralyzed
Lapras gets Leftovers recovery, 74/289
Full Restore on Lapras, Snorlax used Body Slam, 215/289 after Leftovers recovery
Lapras used Ice Beam -30%, Snorlax used Body Slam, 139/289 after Leftovers recovery
Lapras used Ice Beam, KOs Snorlax whew, he didnt use full restore

Lapras vs Venusaur
Lapras gets Leftovers recovery, 161/289
Venusaur took in sunlight, Lapras used Ice Beam, -80% damn, it outspeeds me... but lapras is pretty bulky, it should survive that
Lapras gets Leftovers recovery, 179/289
Venusaur used Solar Beam, KOs Lapras dammit

Delibird vs Venusaur
used Max Revive on Lapras, Venusaur took in sunlight
used Revive on Sneasel, Venusaur used Solar Beam, KOs Delibird

Lapras vs Venusaur
Venusaur used Sunny Day, Lapras used Ice Beam, KOs Venusaur
Lapras leveled up here, that's why it has higher max hp for the rest of the battle

Lapras vs Blastoise
Blastoise used Surf, 277/294 First he uses Sunny Day and then Surf... wtf?
Lapras used Thunderbolt, -45%
Lapras gets Leftovers recovery, 294/294
Blastoise used Surf, 275/294
Lapras used Thunderbolt, -45%
Lapras gets Leftovers recovery, 293/294
Blastoise used Surf, 276/294

w00t you finished too !
Well , congrats , it is sure a thing to finish ! :):):):)

mondays suck October 6th, 2009 8:49 AM

thanks, but finishing things also has a downside, i'll be running out of challenges some time =D

i'm pretty sure i'll do this again some time, but not too soon, i did maybe a bit too many GSC runs recently

FireRed Supergiant October 6th, 2009 8:52 AM

Cleared Union Cave
Cleared Slowpoke Well
Caught a Slowpoke
Beat Gym #2: Bugsy
Got HM01, withdrew Cyndaquil, taught it Cut
Cleared Ilex Forest

Current Party
  • Unown-A: L19 Unown (Fighting-type hidden power)
  • Unown-B: L20 Unown (Rock-type hidden power)
  • Drowzee: L19 Drowzee (Hypnosis, Confusion, Pound, Disable)
  • Maestro: L18 Alakazam (Teleport, Fire Punch, Thunder Punch, Ice Punch)
  • Cyndaquil: L9 Cyndaquil (Cut, Tackle, Leer, Smokescreen)

Bought elemental punch TM’s from store, taught all 3 to Maestro
Evolved Maestro into Kadabra, traded to evolve into Alakazam
Caught Sudowoodo
Arrived Ecruteak City
Cleared Kimono Girls, received HM03
Scattered legendary dogs
Detour to Oivine
Received HM04
Cleared Lighthouse
Returned to Ecruteak, beat Gym #4: Morty
Caught Natu
Went to Cianwood, retrieved medicine
Beat Gym #5: Chuck, evolved Natu
Taught Fly to Xatu
Beat Gym #6: Jasmine

Current Party
  • Maestro: L35 Alakazam (Psybeam, Fire Punch, Thunderpunch, Recover)
  • Unown-A: L20 Unown (Fighting-type hidden power)

  • Drowzee: L19 Drowzee (Hypnosis, Confusion, Pound, Disable)
  • Xatu: L25 Xatu (Fly, Leer, Night Shade, Teleport)

Alakazam has definitely taken over as the alpha male on this team. He’s just so versatile with the elemental punches that everyone else seems to become too specialized.

FLORYN October 6th, 2009 12:05 PM

FireRed Supergiant October 7th, 2009 9:54 AM

LONG POST ahead. Would have posted each as its own post, but not enough activity in this thread so it would have been me posting several times in a row or editing the same post multiple times. Wrote down stuff in MS Word, copied it to here. One spoiler section is one main segment of my run.

Update 1: Lake of Rage through E4

Spoiler:

Caught Red Gyarados
Cleared Radio Tower
Beat Gym #7: Pryce
Cleared Ice Path
Beat Gym #8: Clair
Rec’d Master Ball
Cleared Route 27, Route 26, Victory Road
Defeated Elite Four

Current Party
  • Maestro: L50 Alakazam (Psychic, Ice Punch, Thunderpunch, Recover)
  • Unown-A: L23 Unown (Fighting-type hidden power)
  • Unown-B: L25 Unown (Rock-type hidden power)
  • Drowzee: L22 Drowzee (Hypnosis, Confusion, Pound, Disable)
  • Xatu: L25 Xatu (Fly, Leer, Night Shade, Teleport)

Yup, this was a one-man show. It’s great because I can still keep recover and use 2 of the three remaining slots for elemental punches. I keep a few spares on hand, to adjust which 2 he knows as the situation demands.

Update 2: SS Aqua through Kanto Power Plant
Spoiler:

Took SS Aqua to Vermillion city
Went north to Cerulean to talk to Bill’s grandfather
Had to go catch Lickitung (everstone), Oddish (leaf), and Staryu (water)
Caught Exeggcute
Evolved Staryu (Tsunami) and Exeggcute (Krebbs)
Taught Surf to Tsunami, Strength to Krebbs
Beat Lt. Surge
Beat Sabrina, also acquired TM29 from Mr. Psychic
Beat Erika, taught Giga Drain to Krebbs
Went to power plant, back to Cerulean, retrieved machine part, fixed generator
Beat Misty
Went back to Johto, bought TM29 (psychic)
Taught psychic to Tsunami and Krebbs, taught return to Tsunami

Current Party
  • Maestro: L54 Alakazam (Psychic, Ice Punch, Thunderpunch, Recover)
  • Tsunami: L28 Starmie (Psychic, Return, Surf, Recover)
  • Krebbs: L26 Exeggutor (Psychic, Strength, Giga Drain, Hypnosis)
  • Unown-A: L25 Unown (Fighting-type hidden power)
  • Unown-B: L28 Unown (Rock-type hidden power)
  • Xatu: L25 Xatu (Fly, Leer, Night Shade, Teleport)

Update 3: EXPN Card through Mt. Silver
Spoiler:

Back to Johto, flew to Lavender Town, got EXPN Card
Caught Snorlax near Diglett’s Cave
Went to Pewter City, Beat Brock
Went south to Cinnabar Island, talked to Blue
Went to Seafoam Islands, beat Blaine
Went to Fuschia City, beat Janine
Flew to Viridian City, beat Blue
Talked to Professor Oak, got access to Mt. Silver
Taught Flash to Xatu
Trained Tsunami and Krebbs up to reasonable levels at Mt. Silver

Current Party
  • Maestro: L60 Alakazam (Psychic, Ice Punch, Thunderpunch, Recover)
  • Tsunami: L54 Starmie (Psychic, Return, Surf, Recover)
  • Krebbs: L56 Exeggutor (Psychic, Strength, Giga Drain, Hypnosis)
  • Unown-A: L25 Unown (Fighting-type hidden power)
  • Unown-B: L28 Unown (Rock-type hidden power)
  • Xatu: L25 Xatu (Fly, Leer, Night Shade, Flash)

More training yet to come. I plan to delete Krebbs’s strength to trade it for rollout.
30/60/120/240/480 is way better than 80/80/80/80/80 over 5 turns. Red’s final-form starters will be pretty easy since Maestro has Psychic and ThunderPunch. I’ll keep his Recover and then give him one other move via TM. I’m thinking either Shadow Ball for Espeon or Attract for Snorlax.

Update 4: Final Battle with Red
Spoiler:

After a few failures trying to defeat Red, I decided to overhaul Krebbs’s moveset. Eliminated Giga Drain in favor of Curse and made him hold PrzCureBerry. Also, made Maestro hold a Magnet.

--Opened with Krebbs vs Pikachu, put it to sleep and started away with a few applications of Curse. Had to put Pikachu back to sleep, then used a Hyper Potion and started with Rollout. Missed once, had to do it again. Pikachu tried Charm but Krebbs is a dude, too, so no dice (THANK GOD I didn't catch Krebbs as a female, that could have derailed everything). Pikachu went down on turn #4.
--Red sent out Charizard next. Krebbs tried to keep rolling out, so he died. Switched in Tsunami, who took the hits like a champ while I revived Krebbs. Three Surfs and Charizard was down.
--Tsunami wasn't too useful against Espeon, so I changed back to Krebbs. He took a lot of Swifts from Espeon, but his Rollout took out the cat in the end.
--Snorlax was a big pain, but strategy paid off. Kept Krebbs in the battle, maxed out the applications of Curse so his attack and defense were at maximum. Snorlax only had two attacks, both physical, and his Amnesia does nothing to slow down Rollout.
--Venusaur in. Hyper Potion for Krebbs, then Rollout.
--Then I had Krebbs in there against Blastoise, but Blizzard knocked him out with a critical hit on the first turn. NOOOOO!! Switched in Maestro. A Thunder Punch took Blastoise down to just below half health, and Blastoise used Rain Dance (powering up for Surf, but too late). One more Thunder Punch and WIN!

CHALLENGE COMPLETED

Never used Rollout hardly at all before this run, but combined with Curse against the right opponents (weak offensively to grass/psychic and/or specializing in physical moves so I had time to power up) it got me through a lot of opponents which would have otherwise been impossible since my team focused mostly on special attack, as is common with Psychic types.

I'm also surprised at how little I used Maestro in the final battle compared to the rest of the game. Krebbs took down 4 out of 6 and I only started using him after the E4.

Final Party
  • Maestro: L65 Alakazam (Psychic, Ice Punch, Thunderpunch, Recover)
  • Tsunami: L67 Starmie (Psychic, Return, Surf, Recover)
  • Krebbs: L63 Exeggutor (Psychic, Rollout, Curse, Hypnosis)

Slaves: Xatu (Fly, Flash), extra Staryu (Waterfall, Whirlpool), Cyndaquil (Cut)

I'm thinking about starting another one in a little while, maybe ground (Nido's, Donphan, Steelix), bug (never ever used a bug seriously but Heracross looks SWEET) or electric (Magneton/Lanturn/Ampharos sounds like fun). Does anyone have a recommendation? Maybe a seldom-used pokemon you trained for a while and fell in love with?

mondays suck October 7th, 2009 12:03 PM

Congtatulations for finishing to both of you!

Well, i'm using Girafarig in my Normal Ultimate Monotype Challenge and i must say, that thing is a beast. But since you just finished a Psychic run, you probably won't want to use Girafarig now...
Can't think of any other one right now, i'm too tired

Hey, can I join with Flying? I'm going to do it on Silver!
EDIT: I decided to play on Crystal.
EDIT2: Decided to play it on Silver, so that I can play it on my PSP.

mondays suck October 8th, 2009 4:11 AM

Added both of you to the participants list. Good luck.

Changed the layout of the first post slightly, otherwise the Hall of Fame would have needed too much space in the long run.

I already said i was planning on an Unown Team in another thread, and here it is: My 6 Unown Team, which is a Mono Psychic in some way.

Started a game in Crystal, chose Cyndaquil, my first 2 battles were serious defeats, first i lost to my rival, then to the Youngster with the Pidgey and the Rattata, maybe i should have trained Cyndaquil a bit...
Sneaked past all other trainers, arrived at Violet and solved the Kabuto Puzzle. Caught 6 Unowns by soft resetting. The last HP type, Water, took me pretty much as long as all others together, i had a lot of bad luck there.

But here is my Unown-only-Team, i'm pretty sure it will be completely destroyed by Whitney, Morty or at least the Elite 4 =D

Didnt find the GSC sprites, so i've to use newer ones.

w00t mondays suck you really are up to a challenge !
at the duospecies 3rd gen , i am just at Brawly in Emerald and you finished in FR....
Man you really have skills for playing ^_^

mondays suck October 10th, 2009 12:07 PM

Well, at the douspecies challenge i was abusing that Speedincrease thing a lot (as i always do), so it wasn't that hard to finish. And both my Pokemon were pretty powerful, i didn't use a Pidgey and a Metapod.
Maybe i do have skills for playing, but maybe i'm just having too much free time =D

______________

Did Sprout Tower, beat Falkner, beat Rockets, got completely owned by Bugsy's Scyther, but the rival was pretty easy. Obtained Cut. Grinded to level 15. Finally Beat Bugsy using Rock Unown.
Now where i advanced a bit in the game, there are already some clear tendences showing. As i expected, Psychic Unown has taken over a leading role, since it has a STAB bonus AND seems to have a good Base Power. Grass Unown seems to have a pretty high base Power too, it does quite a lot to Zubats, even though they 4x resist Grass.. Fighting Unown is probably the weakest, but maybe it's only seeming like Fighting Unown is weak because many Pokemon you meet early on in G/S/C resist Fighting.

FireRed Supergiant October 10th, 2009 8:08 PM

good luck, mondays suck. actually I worked with basically the same thing on my psychic run up through whitney's gym (see my other posts on this page). overlevel your unown with the fighting-type hidden power before challenging her, and it really won't be that bad as long as you are faster than her miltank. also watch out for the trainer in her gym that uses two meowth, its "bite" will really hurt you.

but yeah, morty will be seriously tough. i had to go crazy on training the alakazam i caught before i could take him. will be much tougher without allowing yourself that kind of luxury.

Zeffy October 11th, 2009 3:01 AM

UZ Update #3

I thought my I'd play for hours, but I didn't :(
