"Wow, this Pokemon is more useful than I thought"
Have you ever had one of those moments? I've been using an octillery through the game and its diverse moveset has really impressed me. I have bug, psychic, ice, water moves on it and those always see me through. Never expected to find a water pokemon so useful haha.
I never ecxepted a Gyarados to be so owning

Back in emerald I had a random Sunkern in my team while fighting kyogre.
I thought I'd let it faint but kyogre used rest then I used endeavor! easy catch! But for DPPt, I found Banette useful with it's frisk cause it's hard to hunt for rare wild pokemon held items. Abra, kadabra and alakazam for Natures and Ditto for breeding!! |
Sheer Cold Articuno xD
Also I think Shuckle is the best answer for this thread. |
Skarmory. Back when I was a kid, I didn't understand the difference between offensive and defensive pokemon. I thought, Skarmory looks really cool, but it doesn't learn great attacks. Little did I know Skarm was one of the best defensive pokemon of the generation.

I was pleasantly suprised the first time I used a light ball on Pikachu. I didn't think it would make a huge difference back then, but it did. On that note, I'm going to move this to general gaming since it encompasses all generations. *moves* |
I was hoping you'd do that. Anyway, Bibarel has become the powerhouse of my Pearl team. No, I normally wouldn't have him on here out of personal preference; it's for a challenge. Right now, he's got Hyper Fang, Water Gun, Defense Curl, and Rollout. Everything will be replaced with HMs, but I still think he'll be a contender on my team.
Quote:
And Bibarel has got to be one of THE ugliest Pokemon IN EXISTANCE. MADE SOLELY FOR HM SLAVERY. UGH. I hate it being with me all the time but with rock climb/rock smash/strength it's kind of ... necessary. Raticate > Bibarel for hyperfang user. |
Well, yeah. He's going to be the HM slave on my team, and I would prefer Raticate, but as of right now, he's kicking everyone's butt. He took Roark's team by storm. The other two members of my team couldn't do crap at that time.
Also, Unown has saved my butt on Pokemon Stadium 2 more times than I can count. |
Linoone has become a Pokemon that I absolutely adore. I used to hate it until I realised how useful it was as an HM slave. It learns most of the HMs and also has Pick Up which is an awesome ability. 8)
I also use the ExtremeSpeed moveset for competitive battling. There's nothing like wiping out a whole team using Linoone. |
when i first caught bibarel i was like 'wtf'
but then i found out it is a very useful hm slave and spends more time in my party than it has any right to. The other one was Arcanine who after ten years has finally made his debut in my team in Fire Red of all things. |
Girafarig, i used one recently, and found out it has a quite versatile movepool, not-too-bad stats, a decent typing, was a real powerhouse through a big part of the game... In the end still inferior to Staraptor and Clefable, but i honestly never thought Girafarig could be that useful
When I first caught a Luxray I thought it wasn't very good, but now I think it is a strong pokemon and could help you out quite alot =)
cranidos i first thought was really bad as it died in 1 hit alot of the time but when it evolved it owned everything before it got a chance to hit :)
Clefable. Toxic Orb + Magic Guard = Façade!
Espeon in Platinum, I knew it was good but not that good it owned the Hall Frontier Brain with 2 moves, shadow ball (she was using Mesprit and only used reflect)
The Clefairy line. Not only does it learn a great variety of moves leveling up (Magical Leaf, Meteor Mash, etc) Wonder Guard is also an added bonus.
Muchlax w/ metronome, since all it had was metronome, tackle, & rest, I tried metronome when he was my last poke in my 2nd gym battle against gardenia, her turtwig's attack missed & muchlax used fire blast. =P
Clefable is the best poke on my team for some reason
Cacturne and Relicanth. Cacturne has some really good offense, and Relicanth is stronger than you would expect.
My Caturne in Emerald, I had it on my team for lulz. Then when I got to the Psychic gym, the rest of the didn't do so well...but Caturne did the whole thing by itself. I also found Banette in Diamond to be a bit useful.
i had a shellos on my team in diamond and had no revives and all good pokemon had fainted, my weak shellos WON the battle. I WAS SO HAPPY!
Geodude.
He's a beast in the opening of most Pokemon games, and of course, Golem's freakin awesome. |
For me, it was Tentacruel. Tentacool was just so common when I was fishing that I much got pissed whenever I saw it. But now that I've actually trained one, I realized it was awesome special wall. It's speed is pretty good, as well.
Well, before i was obsessed with dragon types i was into normal types alot
so i made a team cnsisting of: Clefable, magic guard and a flame orb and facade pwnage Girafarig, never knew he was normal before Blissey, is a pure spec wall Snorelax Ursaring and a Togekiss all of the above i used to think of as pretty bad. besides Blissey and Togekiss |
Yes. My beloved Wobbuffet. ; w; |
I thought Parasect was useless and then i tried it out and it was godly in GenI.
Spore, Sword's Dance and Slash will get you through nearly al your opponents for the Psychics you had Leech Life. |
Electrode and Weezing. Not only are they not the worst Pokemon around with not too shabby movesets, their Explosion is very useful on PBR alongside my Mismagius ^-^
Generally though I'd choose Electrode first for two things. One, Magnet Rise + Earthquake. Two, its speed wouldn't even give the others a chance to act. Weezing's pitifully slow. |

Wynaut. it looks like a crappy baby pokemon. Apparantly its Uber!
I once played Sapphire and decided to use pokemon I would never catch. Sabeleye ended up being one of these and I was actually pleasantly surprised along with Hariyama too.
Sheer Cold Articuno ROCKS when you teach it Mind Reader along with Sheer Cold. Very useful, indeed. ^^
For me, the most useful pokemon that I randomly happened to find is Blissey. I just started playing around with a Blissey one day because I was bored...and it ended up being a LOT more useful than I had imagined... |
Staryu in Pearl. I caught it because I wanted a cool water Pokemon but I wasn't expecting it to do much in terms of fighting. I was totally wrong, Staryu ended up being the powerhouse of my team, it was basically unstoppable.
I stopped using it once it evolved into Starmie because it made the game too easy. I never lost with it. |
Pelipper/Relicanth in Ruby. They double as HM slaves and Groudon-catchers. Relicanth yawns, I switch into Pelipper (who resists all of groudon's moves really well for an untrained pokemon). then just spoon-feed damage to Groudon via Surf.
My Togekiss....I was just catching him for fun nd decided to train him...now he kicks butt! xD
Let's see...Magmortar.Saved my butt a lot.XD
I'm sure it's already been mentioned, but I found that Shuckle can actually be useful and annoying if used properly.
At first, I thought using Dunsparce as my main partner would be heck (like training an Eevee). But it turned out that he was actually easier to EV train and level then most legendaries. Even at level 12, he didn't faint to Wingull's Pursuit at level 51, and even super-effective attacks from pokes twice his level wouldn't KO him. Not only that, but Glare + Serene Grace Headbutt or Rock Slide reduces his chances of being hit and makes him actually very fun to use. Dunsparce (for the record, I named mine Duncy!) may not be the smartest, or strongest, or fastest pokémon around, but it's his modesty and charm that sets him apart.
:t206: |
I didn't think that Shuckles could've taken a Hyper Beam from a Dragonite before. Well, that was until I had it fought Lance with my Suicune.
When I discovered the wonders of wrap in RBY ^_^
Magikarp.
You have no idea how awesome I felt after sweeping a proper competitive team with a Magikarp's Flail set up by a Smeargle. |
my golduck helped me beat the electriv gym leader in pearl after my starter fainted
Hariyma back in R/S/E. I just cought it for fun and started lvling it. A time later is my strongest pokémon. :D
Bibarel, Rapidash and Luxray
I used all three for the first time ever on Platinum and was absolutely shocked. Bibarel had nothing but HMs, but still managed to demolish most things and soaked up hits like a sponge. Both Rapidash and Luxray were pretty fragile, but surprisingly fast and powerful. Rapidash completely swept Byron for me. |
I'm gonna go with Breloom - I'm currently doing the ultimate monotype challenge with the Grass-type, and Breloom has saved my ass several times by now. For instance, when I battled Winona, he actually took out most of her team after two or three members of my team had already fainted, despite having a 4x weakness to Flying. Seriously, the thing is a beast.
say all the things but metagroos is the best
I haven't but my friend has. I asked him what pokemon he would put in a team from all regions. And for his second one he said Dunsparce!
Ambipom i was just training it originally just to get some items from pickup but he is actually a good fighter
My answer to this is Machoke
I've just started using Garchomp and I have to say its impressing me so far xD
Kecleon has been my favorite Pokemon since the moment I laid eyes on it. I added it to my Pearl team mostly for mascot purposes. It wasn't until much later that I realized he's an intense fighter. I could probably get through every game in every generation with this Kecleon alone. It's movepool is incredible and allows it to learn a bunch of elemental attacks, all of which are very helpful.
I wasn't expecting much in terms of fighting because of all the negative things I heard about him on Pokemon websites. I'm happy I looked past it though, my little Kecleon is my pride and joy. ^-^ Sentrets are oddly powerful as well. I added one to my team because I thought they were adorable, but it turns out he can really hold his own in battle. I'm thoroughly impressed with this little guy. I added a Cherrim to my team, very, very recently. I wasn't expecting much, just a cute little Pokemon to have around. I guess a lot of Pokemon rating websites sort of scared me off. I have yet to see this thing faint, he sweeps through battles where all the Pokemon are much higher levels than he is. It's incredible and nothing like I was expecting. |
Whiscash. I raised one as a poor man's Swampert, because I couldn't find my link cable. It ended up destroying a friend's team. (Salamence, Exeggutor, Registeel)
Farfetch'd. They must have it out for this little guy, but it's my favorite joke pokemon/HM slave. It's like a Swiss army knife. It's good in the field, but God help you if you bring it to a knife fight. Hitmonchan. Iron Fist is cool. I named mine Little Mac. ROOT FOR THE UNDERDOG! |
gallade, it has really proved itself to be really useful throughout the game
Pokeman....Pokeman... i love them very much
Hi, Nice tips for newbie thanks for sharing… |
At first, I thought Bidoof was useless, but now since I put him in a three versus three match online, Bibarel is very useful.
I never new dragonite was that strong until I OHKO'd an entire team on wifi with it. I also never thought wobbufet was strong in ruby but then I OHKO'd groudon and I'm like O_O
probably my Koffing, and Vulpix. I caught both of them just for my pokedex, but they turned out to be awesome in battle! When Koffing became Wheezing, he was even better, and now he is on my team almost all the time
Tentacruel. I'd only known him as an annoying jellyfish that popped up and annoyed you for a bit until I used him in my Water monotype challenge, and he's an absolute beast! He's fast, has reasonably high special and bulky enough to take several hits. The star of my team, it's turned out.
For me it was Steelix. I always thought of it as an annoying thing you met in caves, and that was pretty weak. But I found out it is a useful HM Slave, and even as a slave, can still hold his own in battles.
Lapras is a surprise I've found recently. I run a bulky BoltBeamer set on it, and it's great.
I never realised how well it takes Special hits. Oh, and Perish Song is fun to use (: |
Ahem... Um... ... ... ... Togepi! His metronoma and hustle = FUN
When I caught a Parasect in a bug catching competition in Pokemon Blue, I was like "Wow I am never going to use this," and I ended up giving it a really good move set and had a good battle strategy and it ended up helping my team a lot, it came as a shock.
Dustox... on me last playthru of Ruby, i would have NEVER gotten thru Dewford without it. gust saved me from defeat (... what? how was i supposed to know flying was good against fighting?)
Tropius. It can learn it's share of HM's=)

Primeape.
What went from one of the Pokemon I never cared about to one of my top favorite Pokemon. XD And Gyarados, that thing is the powerhouse of my Platinum team right now. o.o |
ive restarted and level all of my pokemon to lv 100 repeatedly so not much surprises me
Oh yeah Swampert is my all time fav and i always use it And Gallade and scizors is sooooo fast and cool YAY!
Scizor shouldn't suprise you man:p That thing is a cheater! (in a good way). I think Dugtrio is also insanely useful.
What really sucks though is the double electricity weakness
