Hidden Ties

What is Team Legend?
Why are they racing against the infamous Team Rocket, racing to what, where?
Who is this strange child of the forest, and why are both factions so interested in that child?

Ancient forces are stirring. The Yaesu region rushes unknowing towards a terrible clash between two titanic forces...

All of this will hinge upon one young child, with a very special gift...

Hack base: Firered

Hidden Ties is my first shot at a publicized hack. Feedback would be much appreciated.

Here's the basic storyline:
Spoiler:

The Hallowed Grove has been your home for as long as you can remember. Why leave? The food is plentiful, you can explore, and talk to the Pokemon that inhabit the little wood.
But now Gardevoir says it's time for you to go meet others like you, to help them, learn from them... and protect them.
Because something is coming. It can be felt as a writhing tension in the air, an unnatural stillness, the calm before the storm.
Gardevoir send you on your way equipped with enigmatic gifts, a collection of curious artifacts that she claims were once in the ownership of a great Pokemon trainer. Trainer? What is this? Train Pokemon?
You are told to choose a partner from volunteers among the Pokemon in the Grove, a partner who will assist and protect you, and teach you what it means to be a trainer in the human's world.
Choices will be made, and you will find enemies and allies both awaiting at every turn. Choose your path wisely, and be careful. You are the only thing standing between the Yaesu region and utter obliteration.
As you make your way towards civilization, a young boy from Frontier Town ventures into the wilderness, dreaming of new discoveries and adventure.
A girl trains her Pokemon tirelessly, vowing never to lose again.
A shadowed man commands a legion of minions to move ever closer to their ultimate goal, dispersing them throughout the region to watch and wait for the one with the Gift of prophecy, the one who will be the key to their final goal.
A younger man strokes the neck of his Pokemon as he contemplates how best to hinder this shadowed man, and to reach the prize first.
And deep in the blackest pits of the earth, something else stirs, waiting, always waiting for the right moment to enact its own plans.
Soon, very soon, it will have the final piece.
And the world will fall.

In-Depth Storyline/Fanfic
For a far more in-depth storyline, check out the fanfic thingy here: http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?p=5525153#post5525153
...I didn't mean for that to become a fanfic, but there's really no other way to describe it now.

Well, I'll be trying out a few unorthodox techniques in this game, and one of them will be using the setvar command to create variable decisions throughout the game that will cause your choices to affect how other events play out. For instance, you might decide to kick a baby Larvitar very early in the game, and are then stalked and eventually eaten by its mother. Don't expect too many of these, they'll be a pain to script, but I can promise that there will be at least one climactic decision that could well decide the fate of the region.
I'm also planning to throw in a few optional side areas and stuff, bonus missions, that sort of thing, so we'll see how that goes. I already know at least two, though one of them isn't really optional... If you have a really good idea for a side mission, feel free to post it, but put it in spoilers please.

I'm using the following programs:
Spoiler:

-Advance Map by Lu-Ho (the ultimate mapping program, just too cool for words)
-XSE by HackMew (incredible program, infinitely better than its competitors)
-Advanced Series tools by Wichu (Finally, finally I can insert sprites. This is an amazing and relatively new tool series, check it out.) NOTE: Well, my newly inserted Pokemon blew up the first attempt, so I may not be using this after all, but my sprite inserter did :\
-Advance Text by Scizz (very, very handy for those unscriptable dialogues)
-Overworld Editor Rebirth Edition (Haven't put this to use yet, but I will, and besides, it's awesome.) by HackMew.
-YAPE 0.9 by Silver314 (Darthatron's Pokemon editor is great, don't get me wrong, but this is so much more user-friendly.)
-Advance Trainer by HackMew (User friendly, useful, and impossibly awesome. Need I say more?)
-Attack Editor Pro by Darthatron (I might use this, better post it to be safe.)
-Item Editor Pro by Darthatron (Again, I think he made this. Haven't used it yet, but I probably will. I have some ideas for items and such.)

Features:
Okay, and maybe I'll post a list of features, so you can see what I'm up to... I'm not going to make a ton of these; I don't want to turn into one of those hacks with a million bonus features that never leaves the creator's computer.
Spoiler:

-Variable decision making
-New region (hopefully with a real World Map...)
-Gym leaders have been renamed the Yaesu Elite, and are basically a side quest, though you can get some good items by beating them. They are also massively strong for their areas, with Pokemon about 10 levels above what you'll have, so watch out! Oh, and there's no Elite Four, but the Champion has incredibly powerful Pokemon.
-Two rivals whose roles will change with the story. I have permission to name one of them after Cooley, so there's your first name, if anyone cares.
-Team Legend, but what's that supposed to mean? I'm not going to tell you :P.
-A new HM move system for Rock Smash, possibly others.
-DP Pokemon and one two Fakemon
-Special appearances by popular canon characters, in new and unexpected roles.
-Evolution edits on some of the more annoying Pokemon (sorry, Friendship is still there :P)
-A complex, multilayered plot that will hold your attention (hopefully)
-Some other stuff that I don't want to mention yet, in case it blows up in my face.

For those among you who wish to help.
Let me first say that if you offer to be a beta tester I will ignore you, shun you, and generally pretend you don't exist. I will select my own Beta testers when I get to that stage. As for the other positions...
Spoiler:

Spriting, music insertion, and cry insertion are the only things I could use help with right now (Giradialkia would probably volunteer to sprite, but really, I think I've given him enough trouble already :s). I can probably handle any of these, given the time to work at learning each skill (the spriting would be a custom trainer battle sprite). If you want to help, great, if not, it's not the end of the hack.
Applications: If you can help with any of these jobs, post or PM your name, what you want to do, and an example of your work.

As I finish more of this I will steadily post screenshots, maps and such.
Completion:
Maps-35%
Scripts-30%
New Pokemon-?%
Storyline-90%

Time I started a credits list, I suppose:
Cooley-Scripting help and obnoxious rival.
Mervyn 797-Creator of a totally awesome support bar
Destindjagold-Helped me out with a scripting issue and really taught me a lot.
Giradialkia-Beta tester, support bar creator, cry editor, and sprite/icon inserter. Too awesome for words. I also owe him credit for some great mapping advice. Really, this project would have died without his help.
Dark vs. Light-Creator of a second, similarly awesome support bar :)
NiKaNoRoU-Freakishly talented spriter.
Chrunch-Illustrious mapper :D
Metapod23-Scripting help
Pokeyomom-Fakemon concept
n0rul3s-Spriter
r0bert-mapper

I'm hopeless at support bars, but some of the supporters of this hack have made some fantastic ones, check 'em out!

Spoiler:

Here's a great one by mervyn797:

And finally, if you have any ideas, post them. I promise not to bite your head off, and if it's a really good idea then I will use it (with your permission) and give you credit. I might even make you some sort of NPC, and I mean a cool one, not some nerd with glasses in a house somewhere who says "I contributed!" (Of course, if this hack goes really, really badly, you'll wish I hadn't mentioned you :). Too late for you Mervyn, I have plans for you.)
...wonders how the heck he will get an NPC name out of "Giradialkia..."

Release!
Known Bugs:
Spoiler:

-There's a notebook at one point in the game that needs some sort of closeonkeypress-very minor
-The borders of the player's house are glitched:
EDIT: This glitch has been fixed in the next version, but it's still an issue for Beta 1, so I'll leave it posted until the next release.

-There is a sprite floating in the trees near the entrance to Prospera City. I'm not sure how to get rid of him :\
-Certain item/egg scripts have no fanfare. I could fix this, but I'm too lazy right now.
Please report any additional bugs you find during play.

NOTES:
1. Battle Wild Pokemon to level up early in the game, as they're all you'll have to face.
2. This is a difficult game. Don't play it if you're looking for a cakewalk.
3. The Yaesu Elite are a side-quest, you don't have to battle them, but you'll get stuff if you do. They're also ridiculously strong, so be careful!
4. Explore each area thoroughly. There's at least one instance where you'll learn a lot by looking around.

Hedgehogger October 17th, 2009 7:30 PM

I like the storyline a lot, and I'm pretty sure anyone can appreciate a game with positive/negative outcomes. (Will the Tyranitar spit you back out? ;p)

As far as the Rom base goes, the trees and all look decent, but the tall grass...It's just so contrasty. It looks kind of funny being lighter at the bottom where a shadow or something would be. And on your Gardevoir OW: Is that one of the in-game palettes? If it is, I think it has a lighter shade of green in its palette; Maybe you could use that instead of the brownish color in the hair?

But yeah, this hack definitely looks promising. The sad part is, I would help with sprites, if I weren't so busy lazy.

mervyn797 October 18th, 2009 12:46 AM

the first map is kinda blank x_x
but hold on, the other ones are awesome! the tree placement is also good!

Sarcastic Prince October 18th, 2009 2:46 AM

Well, the Hack itself is awesome, but I don't like the Gardevoir
OW. It's not outlined.
If it is outlined, then it would be better.

trebornosliw October 18th, 2009 3:52 AM

Alright, thanks for all the comments.
mervyn, you're right about the Hallowed Grove Map, I'll be changing that up soon.
Sorry, but I probably won't be changing the DP tileset after all, hedgehogger, because I'd have to reinstall all the information for the Pokemon I added, which would be a major pain. I'll look at it in block editor though, and see if I can darken it or something.
Ruka_Prince, thanks for the complement, and even more for the criticism. Okay, here's my problem in that area. I'm color-blind, so I can't tell if her hair is green or red... If someone would do a new Gardevoir for me IN A PALLETE THAT IS ALREADY IN THE GAME, I'll insert that instead. for now, I guess I could outline the Gardevoir. Sorry about that, it was only my second shot at an OW.
...My Ralts is probably pretty bad too. Although there's an interesting glitch I've found now where if you exit the start menu while you can see Ralts, you become Ralts and the hero OW just sits there.
I'm not sure just how much I want in the Alpha, but for now I'm planning on putting a good amount in, so you're not bored to death.
I'm afraid Gardevoir might have to wait a bit; scripting and mapping are higher priority right now.
By the way, whoever voted that the plotline was an embarassment to hackers... I'm coming for you. :P

By the way, Hedgehogger, no, the Tyranitar chews and swallows :)

Hmm, a lot of people have been voting in the poll, but not posting. If you vote, please write a quick post saying why you voted whatever you did, so I can focus on that and make the hack better.

mervyn797 October 19th, 2009 3:21 AM

okay, i made a banner :)
its the first time ive put a pokemon in it. x_x
lol

trebornosliw October 19th, 2009 3:51 AM

Mervyn, that's awesome, I love it! I'll post it right now, thanks!
By the way everyone, I've run into a scripting issue, but I'm working around it while it sits hopefully in the script help thread and finishing up some other stuff while I wait. If you want to help with my script though, I'd really appreciate it. Check Script Help thread.
Oh, and Mervyn, I updated the Hallowed Grove map, so let me know what you think. I'll be updating Tangled way soon too, and Pike Peaks (both maps have some gaping empty spots.

seeker October 19th, 2009 7:49 AM

Okay I'll just make a quick post here with my opinions on what I've seen. I skimmed through the storyline (forgive me XD) but i feel, from what I've seen, it's rather odd. Not saying it's bad, it's just rather different and very unorthodox. Now, you said the hero will be able to talk to pokemon, something evil is coming, so you are needed to meet others like you to save the region from destruction. You shuould expand. What is coming? Give a slight more insight on this. Also show WHY you are needed, not just saying your power can save the world. I know what you're trying to say, but expand on your point as it's some what vague as to why you are needed so badly, especially when there are others like the protaginist.
Now, moving on. The ROM base you are using; I'm not a big fan of it. There is some clash of style, some may disagree but I think using DP style trees & grass tend to clash with the mountains you're using within the game. That's just aa personal prefferance but it turns me off wnating to play it. Another issue is your mapping. It's so so open and repetitve. You seem to struggle to fill up the space. Also, I notice in this map:

There happens to be very little playablity. Notably, to the right hand side of the map where the green terrain, if I may call it that, hits the mountainous terrain. The trees litrally block the way to the mountains so your playability amounts to zero. There are a few other errors in your maps I could pick out but I'd rather you find out for yourself, it's better for you to develop your style.
My next protocall is your spites, which look rather un professional and not very well done.
This http://i34.*.com/1z5n4n8.jpg Being my main concern. The colours are very dark and the entire sprite is unclear. Try think about what an actual pokemon would look like.
Your Gardevior sprite needs some touching up also, I would recommend checking to see if Kyledove has released some OW's for that pokemon in thier public resources as he happens to sprite very well.

If I were to point out some positives in this hack, it would be the fact that you've implemented some original ideas and it does look different to most others.
Best of luck on this. I hope I didn't seem too harsh but try to take it in a light where it will improve your hack!

mervyn797 October 19th, 2009 7:56 AM

hey!!!!!!!!!!!
what did u do to my beautiful transperancy effect? those black lines in the bottom? :S XD

what's that thing on some of those trees?

no worries. i fixed the size, this one should work without a hitch

OW/trainer/Fakemon spriter here. I can help you with them. I'm already the current spriter for Pokemon Eruption, so I'm not joining a team or something. If you want to, I'll just make your requests come to life.

As for my proof of work, um, I'm busy to search myself right now, but you can search my posts to find out what I've done.
I think you already know my fakemon work from my hack (Pokemon BCL)...dunno if you like it.

As for the maps, they're fine, you seem like you're an average at about everything, so that's good.
That's one nifty storyline you got there, though. It spliced me for a minute, that idea of natural order.

Good luck job.

Chimchar 9 October 19th, 2009 10:30 AM

This hack sounds good, but doesn't really look it.
The maps are *YUCK.*
You really need to improve your mapping, or get a mapper that's good.
So in the mean time you can improve on clean roms.
I think you may need to change the tiles, because the ones you're using are not very pretty.
Well, I hope you do good to improve this hack.
Gooood Luck!! :)

Thanks for your criticism, I really appreciate it. I'll try to address all teh points you raised:
-The fakemon sprite: Yeah, this is my brother's work, and our first time ever spriting, so cut some slack for now. I haven't installed it because I know it needs work.
-Gardevoir's sprite: I'll look up Kyledove, thanks for the suggestion!
-The map: You're a little confuse on this one. The trees do not completely block off the mountain because you can walk behind the two top tiles of the trees. I'm more concerned with the emptiness of the left hand side... but I'll have that fixed soon enough.
-The plotline: Okay, thanks for the input, I'll work on getting some more on that ready, I was just being paranoid about revealing my storyline before the beta, but what the heck.
-The ROM base: I'll try another one. I'd rather not start completely fresh because I've gone through all the work of installing thirty or so Pokemon (not the fakemon, you'll be happy to hear), but I've got some other rom bases I want to try.
-Hmm, not sure why you don't like my mapping, but I'll work harder anyway, might as well :)
Seriously, thanks for your comments, I appreciate them. Keep talking, I could use your experienced criticism. Actually, I'd appreciate it if you'd beta test later. I prefer to have mildly hostile testers. PM your answer please.

Lol, sorry! I'll post the new banner.
Glad you like the new maps. If you mean the rope hanging from the tree, I put it there because I needed some sort of house mechanism away from civilization.

I've already seen your proof from your Cyndaquil sprites for eruption and your (fantastic) spriting work for your Bug Catcher game. I'd love for you to do a few sprites when you have time. If you could do new hero/heroine OWs, that'd be great (erm, I know this sounds noobish, but if possible please use palletes that are in the game already. I had a very traumatizing experience with pallete editing recently...).

Okay, got it. The DP tiles die. Sorry mew_ryn.
Actually, if anyone has a rombase that they really like, feel free to recommend it.
Hmm, I hope you all don't mind if progress is slow for a time, it's going to take me awhile to implement this; I already had a lot of mapping done.
I find it interesting that so far everyone either loves my maps or absolutely hates them. Either way, I'll aim to improve!

Thanks everyone for your comments/criticisms, keep them coming!

UPDATE: I've chosen my rom base, the firered base by Synyster Zeikku, Alistair, Peyi, Kyledove, TB Pro, on this page: http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=193327
I rather like it. You can check it out and tell me what you think. I'll be posting maps showing what I've done with it... eventually.

trebornosliw October 21st, 2009 5:43 AM

Alright, here's the latest update:
I think I'm going to have to start over, and this time I probably won't be able to insert any new Pokemon. A major glitch has popped up that has about 3 different parts to it: 1. When I run into a Pokemon that I inserted, the whole game freezes for about 10 seconds before the battle starts. 2: When I use a Pokemon that I inserted, the moves are all different from what it was supposed to know. 3: When I try to use an attack in battle with an inserted Pokemon, the game crashes.
If anyone can help me fix this, great. If not, I'm afraid Gallade is no longer an issue.
Darn it all, I'm getting discouraged.

mervyn797 October 21st, 2009 6:59 AM

omg! that's quite a problem.
the gardevoir OW isnt good.

trebornosliw October 21st, 2009 11:15 AM

Okay, getting back on track now.
Thanks a lot mervyn...
Lol, anyway, I've decided not to use a rom base, so you'll be seeing mostly tiles from the original FireRed game, with a few tweaks. I'll be posting maps eventually, until then you can gaze at the outdated ones and wonder with captivated rapture what the new ones will be like.
From now on, nobody's allowed to complain about the Gardevoir OW unless they can give me a source for a better one (and not the one from HGSS, already tried it and it didn't really work out).
Don't worry, I will be working on fixing Gardevoir. I admit that it's a bad OW. But I GET THE IDEA ALREADY!!!
Anyway, I'm in a much better mood now, and feeling motivated to get this do-... no... restarted...
...
and depression sets in once again...
Ah, whatever. Anyway, as always if you have ideas for the plots, the maps, anything at all, let me know.
And I need a world mapper. Badly. Preferably someone who can walk me through the steps of installing the map, because for some reason the tutorials haven't worked for me.

trebornosliw October 22nd, 2009 7:59 PM

Whoa, Mervyn changed his avatar. That completely threw me off for a second there.
Anyway, back to relevant things. I have finished re-scripting the opening events, and I am absolutely hyped now, because they're all actually working better than they were in the original version! I've finished remapping all but one of the maps I had done, and one of these days I promise to actually post them (uploading pics is just so boring...). Anyway, look for some serious progress soon, because I'll be getting a lot done in the next few days, with any luck.
Speaking of luck, your prayers are welcome right now, my ACT is on Saturday :\.
By the way, I really need an intro screen editor, or else a link to a good tutorial (I was searching earlier, but couldn't find one...). I need to swap the Prof. Oak sprite for Gardevoir, change all the text, get rid of the stupid PokeBall animation, get rid of the part where you name your rival, and probably change the hero/heroine sprites later on.
Anyway, it's past my bedtime. I'll get some more work done tomorrow in between college applications (prayers in that area would be appreciated too, by the way).

Dude love it great idea its awsome despite what people say.
They see problems i see what will deffinatly become a great hack so supporting this hack .

glad to know youve done ur hw. Most people wouldntknow how much goes into a decent hack and lol i ment to look at this like the other day but forgot cause i found some other hack but i so should have looked at this btw the other hack was a dead end lol... good luck

trebornosliw October 26th, 2009 7:03 AM

Uh oh, crisis! Somehow my map connections are messing up the game, is there anyone out there who'd be willing to help me with this? Scripts are working great, and I'm getting really close to an alpha release, but when I try to move from one map to another, the game freezes. If there's anyone who's seen this sort of thing before, or who thinks they can figure it out (and has reason to think so), I need you.

mervyn797 October 26th, 2009 7:18 AM

map connections?
just edit or say delete the unwanted ones.

trebornosliw October 26th, 2009 9:46 AM

...I don't think I explained the problem correctly...
There's a map connection I want to have, and it's spontaneously combusting. I've already removed the map connections I don't want.

what does "spontaneously combusting" mean?

It's deleting itself continuously, if I understand correctly.

trebornosliw October 29th, 2009 4:14 AM

Well, more like it was just glitching up very badly. I've found a way around it for a moment though; I'm just going to put a building between the routes so that there doesn't even have to be a connection there. I'm still curious as to what is causing this though. Time to brush up on my mapping tutorials! I've been making progress though:
-Second rival scripted
-First town mapped (and map-connected... I hope that goes well).
-Trainers inserted past Broken Path.

By the way, I should warn you, this game is going to have a pretty high difficulty level. As I said, it is your choice whether or not to fight the Yaesu Elite, but if you do, you'll find that their Pokemon far surpass yours, unless you spent three hours fighting wild Pidgey :).
I've also decided on another feature that I will install. Two features in one, actually. I am going to 1. Make every Elite become stronger if you get to a certain point without battling him/her.
2. Make all of the Elite's able to re-battle you.
Should be interesting. Anyway, criticisms and comments still welcome. I'm still having problems with one map connection, basically I can cross from one map to another, but when I try to cross back either the map is glitched or the game just freezes. Any help in this area would be much appreciated.

mervyn797 October 29th, 2009 4:25 AM

well, this is beacuse the tilesets of both the places are differnet i think?
yeah, a building would solve it.

I know what you mean, like the glitched lab in Eruption (great hack, by the way), but no, that's not it at all. If the problem were in the tilesets, I would still be able to freely cross between maps, they'd just look really wierd. Also, both maps have the same tilesets :\.
I'll probably wind up putting a cave there or something, unless I can figure out the problem.

Just thinking ( racking my brains actually) hmm sizeing? movment allowences on both maps...? ill continue to look into it for ya.... oh btw Alpha beta/ testers ? maybe me?

trebornosliw October 30th, 2009 5:15 AM

It's not movement allowances, I think it's just the offset for the connection, so I'll be messing with that a bit. Not a major glitch at the moment though, and if I can't fix it before alpha release, I'll just stick a cave there instead.
Anyway, I should have something for you in a couple of weeks; sorry I've been taking so long.

trebornosliw November 6th, 2009 4:52 AM

I need to let everyone know that the alpha is going to be delayed a couple of days due to problems with map connections. For the moment, I'm going to work around it and put a cave or something similar between every map. Thanks for being so patient.

Dark.vs.Light November 7th, 2009 8:49 AM

This hack is looking good so far! Keep up the good work.
About the glitchy map connections, I may be able to help you with the problem.
When you say that the game freezes as you move between maps, does it completely freeze or reset to the intro screen?
If it is the latter it may be the result of a messed-up script on the maps you go to (Happened to me before). With the former I don't have a clue what's wrong.:\
I'll be sure to look into it though as this hack looks promising, (As long as you don't give up) and I wouldn't want to see it made unplayable by a minor bug.:D

The problem is the former, and I'm almost certain that it's a problem with my connection offsets. For now, I'm going to try to work around it, but I've got a lot of real-life stuff going on too (had an SAT today, for one), so progress is going to be sluggish for a while.
I appreciate your support. Hopefully I'll have something for you soon.

trebornosliw November 9th, 2009 5:00 AM

Alright, so I've decided that if I'm going to bypass this bug, I might as well do it spectacularly. I'm including an intriguing sub-plot that you'll first start to see around that point in the game, I'm pretty excited about it. Of course, this means that the hack will take longer to finish, but I'm confident that the changes will be worth it. Thanks to everyone for your support and critique!

UPDATE: Life sucks.
Anyway, this project is moving at a snail's pace right now, due to the fact that the majority of my time is by necessity spent on trying to convince colleges that they want to pay for my education. That, and I've also been reviving a much older project of mine, namely a game system for a Pokemon tabletop RPG (I should be posting that thread soon; this time I'm waiting until the project is done...).
So, for all intents and purposes, this project is on hold, though I will still be working on it. Another problem is that I only seem to have the interest of a bare handful of people at the moment, so I won't be posting much until I really have something major to give you (*cough* alpha *cough*).
For those of you who did support this, thank you. I promise that I will do my best not to allow this project to die completely. We'll see what happens :\.

UPDATE UPDATE: HELP MEEEEEEE!
Alright, I'm reviving this thing. Slowly. I need people to actually post so that the thread doesn't just die. I'm pretty sure that I can't make the next post, so it's up to you guys! I'll work on getting this project done (if only because it would be a shame to waste Mervyn's epic support banner), you guys keep sending me ideas, okay? I'll have new screenies and maps posted tonight or tomorrow, so hang in there!
Btw, I've gone back to the standard FireRed tiles. Complainers will be excommunicated from the Pokemon religion.

Okay, update time! At the moment I'm still working on creative ways to get around my map connection problems, which is frustrating because so far it basically means that, unless my maps have the same width/height (depending on the connection), I have to stick a cave or building in between, which can be something of a pain. Because of that necessity, I've wound up tacking on a whole new subplot...more on that later. Actually, this might wind up tying into the main plot, well, it almost definitely will.
Yes, I realize that it's annoying to think to myself in writing.
Anyway, in the meantime I have the updated maps for you to check out, be sure to let me know what you think. Again, I'm sticking with the original FR tiles now, basing my decision on the age-old proverb, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Let me know what you think!

Alright! Just finished chapter 2 of the storyline, go ahead and read it, tell me what you think. Please remember that this storyline is going to go far more in-depth in certain parts than the game, and the dialogue will not be exactly the same. Also, there will be some side quests that I don't cover with this pseudo-fanfic, so don't count on these chapters as a sort of walkthrough :P.

@Chrunch, thanks for the support! Good luck with your hacks too.

@Live Update King, Glad you like them! I enjoyed making the ??? map, it was fun to mess around with the norm and make a grassy cave. The character will pick up some interesting information on that map.

Hedgehogger January 4th, 2010 11:06 PM

Heh, Pikes Peak? Is there gonna be anyone up there named Zebulun? (I'm sorry, that was corny)

So, I'm assuming that being able to talk to Pokemon is going to also be a feature in this hack? (Based on the mini-fanfics you posted)

Anyway, I do like the in-depth details of the story. I'm sure this'll start getting more attention if you were to release a beta, just, above all things, don't (And you probably were thinking of this) rush through your production. :p The reason why is because I've played some potential hacks that did release a Beta, that didn't quite live up to what I was expecting. Once again, you probably had this in mind, though..

Well, it's from Pikes Peak, yes, but I don't know anything about Zebulun...
Glad you like the storyline! And don't worry, I'm not rushing through this. I'll have it thoroughly beta-tested by the first release, too. Thanks for the encouragement and advice!

Hm, well in that case, maybe I will put someone up there named Zebulun, dunno yet :\.
Anyhoo, I know I've said this before, but this time I mean it. I'll have an alpha for you within the month. All I need to do is set up some scripts for a special challenge I've designed for Pikes Peak, and figure out a few issues with making changemaptile scripts permanent, though I might just cheat on that last one and go around that for the time being. Anyway, I've already got some beta testers, so I'll just nail these last issues, test the game, and get it to you guys.
Now, I have no idea how to reset that poll, so I'm just going to make another impromptu poll right here, just say in your posts what your answer is.
Poll question: What's one thing, a plot element, side mission, etc, that you think would really improve upon this hack?
Let me know what you think!

KaiVii January 7th, 2010 8:15 AM

totally excited for this!

trebornosliw January 7th, 2010 11:39 AM

Oh, a note for you all. I could really use some help with this project. I've been doing everything so far by myself, and I'm making out alright, but some assistance would really be appreciated. At the moment I need a World Map drawer/inserter, an intro screen editor, and a sprite inserter/tester. If you can help out, let me know, all of these are areas that I'm weak in.

Hedgehogger January 7th, 2010 3:59 PM

Right now I've got no ideas for a special side quest/mission...But for the Setmaptile scripts, you could put a setmaptile command in the Map's level script, after it checks a certain flag. I think that should make it work.

Hm, yeah, I heard something to that effect from the Script Help thread, but I wasn't exactly sure how to work that. For the moment I'm just going to take the easy way out, as at this point it really doesn't matter that much at this point, but I'll have to mess around with that some. Thanks for the tip!
I'm going to go ahead and reveal one of the side quests, just to give you an idea of what they're like, and to bare it to suggestions for improvement. Basically, this first side quest is just a simple endurance-battle challenge, only one that's run by wild Pokemon rather than trainers. After you reach a certain point in the game, you will be able to access an area from which you were previously warned away. There you'll battle a series of wild Pokemon, all high in level. After beating each Pokemon, if you take one step back from the tile on which that Pokemon challenged you, the battle is reset and you have to do it all over again. Defeat all of the wild Pokemon, either by knocking them out or capturing them (note: I inadvertantly created an ideal opportunity to 'farm' rare Pokemon here, but I suppose it can't be helped...), and you will be able to face off against the area's "Guardian." I might also throw in a treasure room of some sort. Anyway, it's a pretty basic idea, nothing too original, but I'm a great believer in the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" (which is why I'm using Firered tiles too, btw :P).
Finally, I also have a story update. Here's chapter 3, be sure to let me know what you think! Again, this is probably a lot more detailed than the event in the hack itself will be.

Chapter 3: Inner Strength
Spoiler:

The Sneasel’s sharp claws dug painfully into Gift’s chin as he gazed, eye-to-eye, at the diminutive assailant. Blood began to trickle down his neck, and the Sneasel drew glinting claws back for a decisive slash. Wham! Ralts’ small body hurtled into the would-be killer, jolting Sneasel sideways, his claws leaving a jagged red line across Gift’s cheek in a thwarted strike. Hissing, Sneasel backhanded Ralts viciously across the midsection, sending the little Pokémon tumbling backwards. As Ralts came crashing to a halt against Gift’s knees, Sneasel lept after her, all claws and teeth and shadow.
“Ralts! Flash attack, quickly!” A blinding burst of luminescence illuminated the chamber, and Gift heard Sneasel shout in surprise. Eyes closed, Gift leapt to the right, blindly pulling Ralts along with him, and heard a sinister whistle as Sneasel’s claws ripped through the space previously occupied by Gift’s head. There was a dull thunk as Sneasel impacted the far wall, and opening his eyes, Gift yelled “Tackle!”
Ralts went sailing into Sneasel’s back, driving the Pokémon hard against the unyielding stone wall. Gift heard a grunt of pain from the dark Pokémon, then in a flurry of blindingly fast, swiping movements, Ralts was thrown brutally across the passageway, crashing into the hard floor and barely rolling aside in time as Sneasel came slashing down on the spot where Ralts had fallen. Sparks exploded from Sneasel’s claws as they scraped grooves in the tunnel floor, and Gift darted forward, lowering his body and delivering a low, sweeping kick to Sneasel’s legs. His foot met only air and floating gravel as Sneasel leapt above the attack, eyes flashing and teeth bared as he sliced a vicious gash in Gift’s leg with the claws on his feet. Landing, Sneasel made another mighty leap, avoiding Ralts’ desperate tackle, spinning around in midair, and kicking off from the ceiling to hurtle at Gift like a scything bullet. Gift almost failed to see the attack coming in the semidarkness of the tunnel, rolling aside at the last moment and receiving a stinging slash to the left shoulder.
Gift spun himself around on the floor, tearing one of his backpack straps and kicking out blindly at the spot where Sneasel had landed. He was surprised to feel his foot make contact, and he heard another grunt as Sneasel tumbled backwards head over heels. Gift rolled up onto his feet, blinking a trickle of blood out of his eye as he cautiously advanced. Back in the Grove, Machop had taught him some basic sparring techniques, but Sneasel was simply too fast, too skilled for those to be of any real use. Even as Gift was thinking this, he brought up his right arm to deflect a slash aimed for his face, earning another gash across his forearm for the trouble. Sneasel pressed the attack, and Gift backpedaled furiously to avoid the scything claws, finally coming up hard against the wall. Sneasel ducked under Gift’s desperate guard and came up directly in front of the boy, eyes glinting, claws pressing delicately into Gift’s neck.
“I’m impressed,” Sneasel remarked. “You’re the first trainer I’ve met who didn’t make his Pokémon do all the work for him. Still, nobody trespasses on my territory. I let you through, and soon everyone will think this is some sort of public highway for them to use whenever they please. So it’s nothing pers-” Wham!
Sneasel was once again thrown to the side as a battered and scratched Ralts slammed into his side. Wasting no time, Gift pounced upon the one course of action left open to him, the only thing that might actually work. Hissing in anger, Sneasel leapt to his feet and darted forward… straight into the PokeBall that came flying from Gift’s hand. Surprise and fury showed for a brief moment on Sneasel’s face, and then the Pokémon was enveloped in a blinding flash of white light and vanished into the red and white sphere. Immediately the ball began to quiver as Sneasel fought to break out. Grimly, Gift fished another PokeBall out of his back and strode forward just as the quivering ball exploded, and Sneasel leapt snarling back out. Even before the PokeBall had finished opening Gift was pivoting on his left leg, bringing his right up, bent, and straightening the leg into a vicious side kick that caught Sneasel in midair, slamming the Pokémon hard in the midsection and sending him flying backwards into the wall. Giving the assailant no time to collect himself, Gift threw the second PokeBall, momentarily glimpsing Sneasel’s enraged expression as he was enveloped in a second wave of light.
The ball clacked shut and began immediately to vibrate. Gift watched the orb warily as he selected another ball from his pack, cocking his fatigued arm for another throw. This proved to be unnecessary. With a final shudder, the quivering ball fell still, the button at the sphere’s center popping outward with a sharp click!
Gift bent down, scooped the ball into his pack, and looked around for Ralts. The spunky little Pokémon was standing, shaking with fatigue and pain, on the tunnel floor. Though she was obviously badly injured, Gift could see a satisfied smile on her face.
“Here,” Gift slung off his pack and sat down in front of Ralts. “Gardevoir gave me some potions before we left; let’s fix you up.”
Too exhausted to reply, Ralts nodded, and slumped gratefully into the crook of Gift’s bloody arm as he sprayed her with the curative liquid. It felt good to rest, and Gift lay gratefully back as he waited for the Potion to take effect. Eventually he became aware of a large number of Zubat, all eyeing his wounds rather hungrily, and, heaving himself to his feet, Gift scooped Ralts up in his arms and trudged onwards, towards the light at the end of the tunnel.

KaiVii January 9th, 2010 6:37 PM

I like this chapter, but my only question is, how will you play out that battle scene?

trebornosliw January 9th, 2010 8:43 PM

Like I said, the game won't be near as detailed. I'll just have the murmers from the dark, then a battle with a wild Sneasel.
Oh, and I'll also mess with Ralts' moveset, obviously.
UPDATE: I've finished the first alpha. Now to beta test and clean up any bugs, then I should have a release for you.

trebornosliw January 12th, 2010 3:01 PM

Okay, hopefully this update will be my last before the big release :)
Giradialkia, Hidden Ties' illustrious and impossibly cool beta tester, just informed me that my houses are warping him to the middle of nowhere. Literally (though, in all fairness, the middle of nowhere also warps you right back). The good side of this is that these mess-ups on my part let you gain access to trainers earlier than you normally would. The downside, those trainers are roughly twice your level :P
I'm working on fixing that, along with a ladder that doesn't like to be used and a few other issues. Luckily there haven't been any really major bugs yet, as far as I know, so I'll just fix these issues and send it along for another test, at which point, well, we shall see...

Cool, I can't wait to play the Beta release. I don't know about the 'warping to the middle of nowhere' part, but I can fathom a good guess why the ladder doesn't work. In the games, the ladder/cave exits have tiles directly around them with specific Behavior Bytes:

64-Arrow up => warp above block
65-arrow down; warp under block

I hope it helps.

Lol, yeah, actually I had already fixed this. I just used the basic "use warp" behavior byte. Thanks though!

Lol, sorry. It doesn't look as bad in-game though.
Okay, fixed issues with the first attempt and sent it back for a retest... we're having some problems with warps that don't make any sense.

Oh, and I'll also mess with Ralts' moveset, obviously.
UPDATE: I've finished the first alpha. Now to beta test and clean up any bugs, then I should have a release for you.

Makes perfect sense to me :)

trebornosliw January 15th, 2010 1:19 PM

Okay, the warp problem has been fixed, though it messed up the ROM enough that I had to pull out a backup and reconstruct a lot of what I'd completed thus far. It's going through a second beta-test, and hopefully will have some new Pokemon inserted as well.

At the moment I need a World Map drawer/inserter, an intro screen editor, and a sprite inserter/tester. If you can help out, let me know, all of these are areas that I'm weak in.

If you still need help, I'll give you a hand. I'm fairly good with inserting sprites via UNLZ, if that's what you mean by a sprite inserter/tester. This project has slowly grown since I first saw it. So, yeah, I'd like to help in an way possible.

Thanks, I really appreciate it, but I've already got a sprite inserter for the time being. However, if the need arises, would you be able to insert a new set of hero sprites, back and front?
Oh, and do you do custom sprites, btw? I'm going to need at least one, probably two of those, one Pokemon and one trainer.

I suppose I could. Depends if they need to be custom or if they are going to be from another game. I'm not great with custom stuff, you see.

I could have a go, I think. I'm not great with custom stuff, as I already mentioned. But if it'll help this hack along, I could take a look at spriting tutorials, and get something done for you.

Edit: Reuploading banner at Trebornosliw's "request."

@DarkvsLight, okay, well, I've got someone doing the hero sprites for me so those will be pre-made. I'll get back to you on the customs, first I need to figure out exactly what I'll need. Thanks!

...WHOA! That's awesome! I didn't even see that banner till just now. I'll stick it on post 1 right away, thanks a bunch!

Okay, have it back now. Thanks again!

@Zein, you mean the OW palettes? I agree. Care to offer an alternative, from an in-game palette?

Dry January 18th, 2010 7:31 PM

This is a high quality hack.
Not many people appreciate the time and effort that goes into a short sequence ingame.
Comming up with new revolutionary ways to play the game is by far what seperates this hack.
There are thousands of hacks that have the same type storyline in them, several however have risen up to meet a higher standard of hack.
One being Toxic purple, that truely gave everyone a glimpse of what hacking should be like pure new untainted ideas.
Your storyline is that of a proffesional writer. The features are collected together in a mix and match type way that works along the basis that our actions contribute to an outcome. The time you have obviously put into this is monumental.

Anyone who reads this pleease give the creator some praise. In which his hack is truly worthy of.
I have high expectations for this hack.

Wow. Thanks! Maybe I should submit this for some sort of Nobel prize.
Erm, anyhoo, I want to let you all know that beta testing is just about completed. I've instituted all the changes recommended by Giradialkia, and I'll be making the final test tonight. By tomorrow, if all goes well, you'll have an alpha!
Thanks for your support everyone, especially Dry, whose support is beginning to border on idol worship (but in a good way).
Oh, and we've Giradialkia has inserted five new Pokemon that you should run into at some point, most taken from my personal favorites (hint: Weavile is God).

Dry January 18th, 2010 8:14 PM

I just thought that recognition of your efforts would be due seeing as u have put much time into this.
People should look at this and be amazed at what you have been able to do.

People dont look at the mona lisa and go well its not that good i could take a photo and it would look much better, they respect the artist and his creation. I believe that people should do the same for you.

Well thanks! I appreciate the compliment, though I wouldn't compare my hack to the Mona Lisa :P
And now, without further ado, I give you.... ALPHA 1! I'm sticking the download on the first post, be sure to tell me what you think! Before playing, please read the known bugs list and notes on gameplay. Enjoy!

NiKaNoRoU January 19th, 2010 3:49 PM

Hey, I tested the alpha. Quickly.

Good job so far, here are my notes:
Spoiler:

The concept's really good, I like how you play with the personality of pokemon. And the maps look like a natural maze, too.

Time to go on the bad side, though...
http://i49.*.com/53u4ih.png
do you see the tile errors on the tree shading?
well, you do that a lot...and that cave should allow you to walk past it on the top rock tiles.

Also, this isn't a glitch/bug or anything, but are you supposed to run away from the sneasel battle? because I did.

Aaaaaaand...
grinding. Lots and lots of grinding. Your difficulty is instantly raised, with pokemon levels equal to yours' being encountered. I'm not saying it's bad, just, don't overdo it. Good luck.

So far I just reached that 'tangled' route. Will notify you of more soon.

Now, I can't sprite for you, at least not this week. I have 3 stupid essays and a test, and what is more, I have to go full throttle on my own hack, in order to have it released soon.

But when I get to spriting, first thing you'll get will be a ralts/gardevoir OW D:

LOL, yeah, mine are really bad, aren't they :\
Yup, there are some tile errors I need to fix... thanks for pointing those out. The difficulty level goes down a bit after Pike Peaks, it's just the initial training that gets kind of tedious (especially with Ralts...). It gets hard again with the first Yaesu Elite, but he's optional anyway.
And you couldn't walk past those tiles in the original games, as far as I can remember (could be wrong). Plus, those tiles all have 20 as the background byte, so they're covered by the character, and I don't want to mess with them on Block editor just yet...
Anyway, I'll see about fixing that shading. Sounds like your hack is coming along well, can't wait to see how it turns out!

Hedgehogger January 19th, 2010 6:33 PM

Yeah, I also played the first Alpha. It was pretty good, till my rival KO'd me with his Cyndaquil. :P I spent a good amount of time rushing through the BETA, so I didn't find too much differing from what the other guy said (Though, Sneasel's a good addition on my team.)

And speaking of Sneasel, you said Weavile was going to be in the game...Any ideas on how you're going to make it evolve?

Sneasel will evolve through standard level-up, as will all Pokemon that previously needed to be traded for evolution (except Slowking, who is obtained by Water Stone). Umbreon and Espeon evolve through the use of Moon and Sun stone, respectively, and I'll be messing around with Feebas' evolution later.
So, what does this hack need more of, do you think? Or less, I suppose.

chrunch January 19th, 2010 9:42 PM

I just finished the alpha!
(almost... I lost against shade)
were you supposed to catch the sneasel?
Anyway, good job!:D

Thanks. Capturing Sneasel is optional, you can catch it, kill it, or even run away from it (though I recommend one of the first two, running away sort of messes up the storyline).
Glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, Shade is very hard to beat, as he should be. It never made sense to me in these official games how the Gym Leaders are the best of the best, but somehow always several levels behind you o_0.
For Shade, I recommend using Gastly to put his Pokemon to sleep, and Cyndaquil to lay down smokescreens on the tougher Pokemon in his party, which is how I eventually beat him.
So, I'll be getting to work on Beta 1 any day now. I'm planning on adding a feature or two, most notably the elimination of Rock Smash as an HM move (and possibly Strength or Cut too). Flash is going to be eliminated by the simple expedient that I'm not going to make any dark caves, because I hate Flash.

trebornosliw January 24th, 2010 1:47 PM

Okay, new update. I've written out chapter four of the storyline/fanfic, and will post that at the start of the thread. I've got some awesome events planned out for Team Rocket and a familiar figure in a new role, and have confirmed the first (and probably only) Fakemon to be inserted to Hidden Ties, a Pokemon named Arnatos.
Giradialkia has been working like crazy to help me get stuff done, so I'd like to say thanks again to him. As soon as the latest insertions are complete, it's back to scripting for me. Oh, and just so you all know, I think I've worked out that issue I was having with the map connections, though I'm still not going to use any with an offset other than zero, because I'm a coward :P
Now, the stuff in this hack is going to be awesome, but it would be even more awesome if someone with some ASM savvy could help out. Just a few events that would be a little better with some ASM help.

Mr. X January 28th, 2010 12:13 PM

Is their supposed to be some sort of event in the utopia hq? I was kinda hoping for a event of some sort of event.

The Utopia HQ is a clue in the storyline, not necessarily a major event, but if you look in all the houses, you'll find a notebook outlining what occurred there. Mostly you're just supposed to be creeped out ;)
We've been running into technical difficulties, but should have this hack back on track within the next year.

.Tactic. January 29th, 2010 1:28 PM

At first... I hated the look of this hack, Mainly because of its horrible pals, and Now I have seen the updated nice maps and the glorious story.. WELL DONE! It is actually a great idea!

Dry January 29th, 2010 7:29 PM

Dude havnt played it yet but ur review are mostly good eyy? ill get round to it soon
i think the difficulty from the sounds of it is perfect nice and harsh haha

trebornosliw January 30th, 2010 6:09 AM

Lol, there were a lot of people who hated those palletes (I thought they were fine, but I'm colorblind anyway :P). First rule of capitalism: do what the customer wants. It helped that my rom blew up and I had to start over anyway.
Well, speaking of explosions, we are having some major problems with email right now, to the point where I can't get the latest patch back from sprite insertion so that I can get back to work. We're working around that, and again, should be back on track by next week, probably sooner.
In the meantime, I've prepared chapter five of the storyline for you all, hope you enjoy! It can be found on the first post (duh).

Link13 January 30th, 2010 8:52 AM

the game so far is great except the gardevoir and ralts any way it's still awsome

trebornosliw January 31st, 2010 6:47 AM

Alright, technical problems have been resolved and I'm back to work! Not only that, but Giradialkia made another awesome teaser userbar. Here's a preview, to put it in your sig just go to page 1:
http://i48.*.com/2db5nxu.png
I should note that I'll be using this one in my signature for awhile and not the other two, not because the other two aren't as good, but as a sort of plot advancer. Basically, my signature doesn't have room for three HT support bars, so I'll be rotating which one I use.
@Link, yes, Gardevoir is awful :(
Oh, I really need a world mapper/inserter right now. I went ahead and threw together the basic layout of the region, I need someone to make a quality map and insert it for me. Any volunteers?

NiKaNoRoU February 1st, 2010 11:44 PM

Here you go, the ows that you have requested have been indexed, and zipped.
*fail*

Dry February 4th, 2010 10:23 PM

Oh Trebornosliw can i be official reviewer? lol i dno ill be harsh and have high standereds you can give me a critque chart thing that i will use and ill be like a beta testerbut ill be looking more for how the story unfolds ect.

oh and i downloaded it ima go play now XD!

trebornosliw February 5th, 2010 5:41 AM

Thanks NiKa! I'll insert these right away. Thanks a lot for being so patient with me :\
And Dry, you can do that if you want... I mean, everyone can do that. I'd be happy to take any constructive criticism.

trebornosliw February 5th, 2010 8:39 AM

Okay! So there are a couple of updates. First, NiKaNoRoU's awesome new OW sprites for Gardevoir and Ralts have been inserted! Check them out under screenshots.
Second, I've finished another chapter of the storyline! Unfortunately, I've also exceeded my word limit for the first post :(. So what I'm going to do, is start a new thread under fanfics just for the in-depth storyline. I'll post a link once the thread is up and running.
Progress is moving smoothly, but it'll be awhile before Beta 1 is ready; I'm adding an event to the storyline that I think (and hope) everyone will find very interesting, an event with heavy involvement from a familiar face. This event will also unlock some novel features, including an alternate Rock Smash method that I'm still testing, and will allow you to meet the first of the Yaesu Emblem Holders. Anyway, things are going great! Keep telling me how to improve, and I'll do my best to make this project better!
Oh, I'm still looking for a world mapper/inserter, if anyone's out there.

NiKaNoRoU February 5th, 2010 11:03 AM

Dude, you're praising me too much, stop it :tired:

Anyway, I'm glad that they work correctly. Next ones will be teh Hero's OWs!

Dry February 5th, 2010 2:27 PM

OFFICIAL REVIEW TIME: [ Not really but i picked up on a few things...:p]
Human frontier the top tiles of the tree includes you when u walk on it for some reason.(which tree ? the one that is down the stairs then up another set.)

Sneasel may need to be edited, as 42 exp gives one level to level 5. and he is generally easy to level apposed to Other Starters.
And has very good stats. So you can ride on the back of sneasel all game. ( i did this)

Noticed that the Utopia was very largely based on Cerulean City not just the inside of the houses but there positions
Also one door doesnt work in there might be a Movement permission that may have been over looked.

The middle of nowhere sign in pokecentre may need to be rethinked with like a supplie stall you use to heal your pokemon.

Convoluted - nice Use of the english language...or pherhaps a theaserus?

Music is the same as normal Fire red which is fine the errie music works for frontier town as it is the edge of exploration.

DO NOT READ SPOILER IF YOU HAVE NOT BEATEN SHADOW - may be Deleted if the owner wishes it that way...
Spoiler:
Shadow can be taken down with a Sneasel if it knows icy wind quick attack theif + another move. it works well because the icy wind can finish murkrow off before he is a problem,
as with haunter and misardevas only with thief and quick attack is suprisingly effective againts houndoor and u just have to use icy wind on Sable eye a few times to beat it.

The prize you get for beating him is Good as for so early in the game.

Also i like the fact in the utopia you could hear Gastlys Cry throughout it.
The starter choosing is really unique. along with the chansey pokecenter cave part. Also 2nd gen pokemon through out the grass ( you have alot of grass) is good.

Overall 7/10 ( Its really well done and i would like to see more but the unique style wears off when you begin travelling alot, still unique though )

trebornosliw February 5th, 2010 7:42 PM

Thanks for the report then, sounds like I need to slow down Sneasel's leveling some :\
Shade is more of a challenge if you're training three or four Pokemon, like I did. He's a side quest though, so the item reward is fine for that. I'll make him a bit tougher too (though that'll happen automatically later in the game).
I didn't use a thesaurus, but I'll take that as a compliment :P
As for the tree issue, that's some problem with the movement permissions, I think. I'll try changing them to 0 instead of 10 or 14, see if that helps. I ran into that bug earlier too.
Now, Utopia.
The blocked door is supposed to be unopenable. As a matter of fact, door warps still work with a movement permission of 1, there's just no warp there. It's supposed to be a signpost reading "Something is blocking this door from the inside, it's impossible to budge." I'll probably insert a script there or something. The house layout was completely random, btw. That wasn't the old Cerulean map, it was Rock Tunnel 0.o
...and what's this about Gastly's cry?
The abandoned Pokemon center is just there to be creepy, and because I didn't want the player to be teleported all the way back to Hallowed Grove if he/she lost a battle.
I hadn't even checked the music... probably want to change it up for Frontier town. I always play on mute :s
As for the tedium, well, that's the story, really. You're out on the edge of civilization, there's not much to see. It'll get better as you advance further into the region.

And NiKa, thanks a bunch for everything, looking forward to seeing what you come up with for the hero (that is, presuming you decide to be a hero and not a villain...)!

giradialkia February 5th, 2010 8:17 PM

Gastly's cry isn't a bug or anything, dude. In any of the 3rd gen games, every once in a while you can hear the cry of any Pokemon that's in the Wild Pokemon data of that map. If you roamed around the Utopia long enough, you'd hear Shuppets and Duskulls, too:)

0.o
Seriously? That's awesome! I never knew that!
...
I really have nothing else to say...

Vannah☆ February 6th, 2010 7:44 AM

Amazing alpha. I ended up with lvl 18 gastly, lvl 15 nidoran, lvl 14 sneasel, lvl 16 pidgey, and lvl 14 quilava. Amazing storyline. Cool game. Other than changing the tileset, hero OW, and text (for example when you die, chansey says the same thing Mom normally would, etc.) I think It's perfect.

trebornosliw February 6th, 2010 8:45 AM

Thanks Vannah. The hero sprites are currently being created, the tileset...well frankly tile inserting is not my strong point, and the last rombase I tried didn't work out. If you've got some suggestions, please feel free to let me know what they are. As for the Mom text, yeah, that's an issue, but I'm not sure where to find the offset for that particular script, or even how to edit it without glitching up the game. If anyone knows the answer, that'd be really helpful.
...that's a pretty strong team. I'll probably have to make Shade a bit tougher for the next release.

Dry February 6th, 2010 4:22 PM

Hope that was constructive it is an awsome game i was just bein like heaps harsh tryin to find the wrong points ... cause if i was too nice u wuld just be like oh ok i dnt need to improve it at all.. were as harsh-ness will hopefully motivate u to improve with each release..

trebornosliw February 11th, 2010 10:34 AM

I just have to post something, because I am PSYCHED :D
I've hit that rare moment in scripting when you're working hard, you've got the basic knowledge down pat, and suddenly you realize a miracle has occured;
EVERYTHING IS WORKING!
Seriously, every single script is turning out beautifully, every last detail falling into place, which has never, ever happened before. Most of the mapping for Beta 1 is done already, and I'm scripting like my virtual XSE pants are on fire. Progress on Beta 1 is around 50%, I'll keep you updated. This beta will consist primarily of some major side missions, optional stuff, really, with a key storyline event thrown in as well. I'll have screenshots and a few more storyline chapters for you in about a week, I think.

Haha, I know that feeling, dude. After a while when you get used to using a huge amount of the commands it almost becomes second nature. And congrats on the progress, dude. I want to see what you came up with when you're finished.

trebornosliw February 14th, 2010 7:39 AM

Alright, a quick progress update and announcement. I just finished scripting the first really major side quest in the game, as well as the replacement for the Rock Smash HM (you can still obtain the HM, but there's really no point in using it). I like to flatter myself in that I think it's a rather original replacement. It's not a key item or anything like that. I also didn't just remove all the smashable rocks, which I know you sarcastic ones are thinking >:(
Anyway, I also would like to thank Chrunch for becoming Hidden Ties' first (and probably last), mapper other than myself. He's good at what he does, and you'll see what I mean next beta.
...and that's about it. More as it comes up!

KaiVii February 14th, 2010 9:23 AM

w00t! I'm very excited for all of this! I can't wait!

Alright, everything's proceeding fairly smoothly. There were a couple of scripts that refused to cooperate, but they have been...dealt with...
Anyhoo, I'm including a lot of canon characters in the storyline, in completely different roles than what you'd normally see, so I've decided to post some quick bios of a few of these characters for you all to check out. I will NOT be posting these at the beginning of the thread, due to word limits.
So, the first bio:
Bruno
Spoiler:

Revered by trainers, virtually worshipped by Black Belts, Bruno's career has earned him a reputation for incredible strength. The man himself is strong, a master of several forms of martial arts, brutally strong, but graceful and coordinated. His Pokemon are similarly exceptional, exhibiting Bruno's preference for solid, physically-inclined powerhouses, capable of soaking up massive punishment and doling out far more damage than was recieved.
Bruno's origins are shrouded in mystery. He first came into the spotlight as a member of the then infamous, later revered Elite Four, during which time he faced his first defeat; a narrow loss to the legendary Pokemon Master Red. After this defeat, and the cessation of the Four's plans of human extinction and Pokemon utopia, Bruno and his fellows became the official Elite Four of the Kanto Pokemon League testing those trainers who aspired to championship. Roughly a year after this official formation, Lorelei and Agatha, two of Bruno's peers in the Elite, vacated their positions, Lorelei to spend more time at her home in the Sevii Islands, Agatha to find some way to deal with her own bitter, resentful emotions towards the rest of the world. They were replaced by the previously unknown trainer of the Psychic type, Will, and former Fuschia City Gym Leader Koga, respectively. Lance was elevated to the position of Champion of the newly merged Kanto and Johto leagues, and Dark-type specialist Karen took his place as final test of the Elite.
Bruno retained this position for two more years, finally retiring with a small fortune amassed from hundreds of victorious battles. Previously known for his unnerving intensity and lack of humor in battle, Bruno's personality had relaxed somewhat in the following years, and those who knew him during this time would be quick to describe the man as an easygoing giant, no less formidable in battle than before, but more willing to enjoy himself in all that he did. To quote Agatha, with whom Bruno maintained correspondence even after both had departed the Elite, "The idiot's more annoying than ever, now he's got some excuse for a sense of humor."
Within a few months of his official retirement, Bruno purchased a sizeable island in the Yaesu Gulf with the funds he had earned throughout his career. Here he allowed a select few "worthy" trainers to hone their skills, seemingly attempting to nurture the talents of those he considered to be especially proficient. Currently recognized as one of the most powerful trainers in the world, Bruno now spends most of his time in the Yaesu region, training alone and with a large group of his devoted followers, all of whom aspire to earn the legend's favor. He will occasionally go searching for one of Yaesu's respected Elite in hopes of a challenge. These battles inevitably end in a resounding victory for Bruno, earning him several offers from the Yaesu League of the status of an Emblem Holder or Elite himself, all of which he has refused.

Bruno will be a major NPC for the upcoming side mission. He's changed his party around a little bit, retaining all three of the Hitmonlee/chan/top trio he trained at various points in his career, and making a brand-new addition to his already devastating party as well. What is that addition? Come next Beta, you may find out (though I'll be honest and say I doubt it, for reasons you'll also discover).

Hm. Feedback on that was disturbingly nonexistent. And for some reason my thread seems to have attracted some noobspamming...
Oh well. My uber-inspiration streak has worn off, sadly, but I'm still plugging away, working towards the next release. I've got some ideas for another fun event, and another character bio to post. I've also posted a new chapter in the storyline, so be sure to check out that thread! There's a link in my sig.

Wigglytuff
Spoiler:

From childhood, the famed Wigglytuff of Wigglytuff's Explorer Guild was a prodigy. The then-Igglybuff recieved his first taste of dungeon exploration during a misguided venture into a forest with two young delinquents, a venture that culminated in his meeting Armaldo, a high-profile outlaw with some experience in exploration. Quite oblivious to danger, Igglybuff befriended Armaldo and from him learned all the tricks of the explorer trade, repeatedly amazing Armaldo with his simple, logical thinking and astonishing power.
Eventually, Armaldo was tracked down and arrested by the authorities; he went quietly, largely for the benefit of Igglybuff, who had become something of a child figure for him. He left his Guard Orb, an exceedingly rare item that he and Igglybuff had discovered on their first joint exploration, with the budding adventurer, and Igglybuff retained this gift throughout his exploration career.
After this parting, Igglybuff began exploring solo. His innocent, offsetting nature found him many friends, and disarmed potential enemies. Some years passed, during which Igglybuff evolved first to Jigglypuff, and then, upon a successful exploration during which he discovered a Moon Stone, to Wigglytuff. Some time during this period he developed a near obsession with Perfect Apples, a superior breed of fruit much loved by Pokemon.
Wigglytuff first met Team Charm after being robbed by Team AWD, an exploration group specializing in semi-legal activities. Faint with hunger, Wigglytuff was nursed back to health in short order with the attentions of Team Charm, their gifts of Perfect Apples earning his undying friendship. Events after this point become somewhat blurred. It is known that Wigglytuff entered a nearby dungeon around the same time as teams AWD and Charm, but little is known about what actually occured within the cave, though it is rumored that some great treasure was discovered (though this is unlikely, as all three entities left the dungeon empty-handed). Shortly after this exploration, Wigglytuff joined Team Charm, and assisted them on many explorations before splitting off to conduct explorations with a new friend, Chatot.
This new duo continued Wigglytuff's plethora of explorations, and Wigglytuff became renowned as a first-class explorer. Bolstered by his reputation, Wigglytuff settled down to accomplish one of his lifelong dreams; the founding of an Explorer's Guild to train budding exploration teams.
Today, Wigglytuff's Guild is widely acclaimed among Pokemon as the starting point for some of the most effective exploration teams in the world.

Looking forward to the next beta!
I can't wait to see my maps ingame.:)

0.o
I seriously underestimated the amount of scripting I'd need to do for Beta 1. I guess I hadn't really thought about it...
Oh well, everything's proceeding smoothly and at a fast pace, there's just a lot more to do than I originally thought. Still, I'm about ninety percent done with the mapping (thanks in part to Chrunch, thanks again! I blew up your map a few minutes ago, but it's okay, I fixed it again), and forty percent done with the scripting. If anyone had an idea for a side mission that they'd like to see next beta, now's the time to submit it.

UPDATE: Posted two new maps, Theophilus Gardens and Chrunch's route, now named Battler's Route. Check them out on the first post, and be sure to comment!

Okay, another update real quick. Beta 1 is largely finished. The mapping is 100% done, and the scripting is about 80% done (I have a massive side event to script, and then it'll be ready). That's the good news. The bad news is that I won't be able to work on it from March 6-10th, because I'm going to Washington DC and won't be bringing my computer. So hang in there, I'll be back to work as soon as I get back.
Oh, if anyone's interested in giving me a homecoming present, I really need want a team rocket grunt lying down, maybe with his hat askew, to replace the napping geezer. Anyone who can help with that, I'd really appreciate it.
Oh, and I apologize, I have once again attempted to do some of my own OWs (please don't lynch me). But it's okay. These turned out far better than the infamous Gardevoir attempt (well, mostly...how do you feel about giant man-eating Chatot sprites?).

I WANT MAN EATING CHATOT.
Lol, jk. I'll give the Rocket Man (heh) a shot, you'll hear from me wh... Bleh. Words can be so tedious.
It's nice to see that the beta is nearly done, you certainly make good progress, Treb.

Where is everybody? C'mon, guys! Post and stuff!

Lol, I know! I think more people will become interested once I have a beta release. Thanks for giving the sprite a shot, btw, though I feel kind of bad, since you've done so much already...
Oh well, self-induced slavery is fine, I guess, if it is self-induced :D
And I just realized that just about sixty percent of the beta is optional. Well, no, actually about eighty percent, really. I don't really force the player to do much in this hack...so yeah, exploring a lot is a good idea.
Anyway, I'll be back in a few. Thanks again Gira!
