Pekin's Fakemon sprites need feedback!

I've been working for a long time on a Ruby hack, and I've created about 150 Fakemon. Here are some of them. I know, some of them look a little odd, but that's why I need feedback - What can I do better? (And what am I doing just right?)

Gippy
Water/Psychic
This one is based on an ostracod, and it evolves into Gulpel starting at level 35.

Gulpel
Water/Psychic
It's based on a gulper eel. Evolves into Neptelp starting at level 50.

Neptelp
Water/Psychic
Also based on a gulper eel, but with inspiration from a shark.

Spoiler:

Chinbi
Fire/Ghost
I made this because I thought a Fire/Ghost dual-type would be cool. A possessed flame? It evolves into Zolten starting at level 18.

Zolten
Fire/Ghost
Not really based on anything but an idea, I thought was cool. It evolves into Molorch via happiness.

Molorch
Fire/Ghost
Some zombie-inspiration on this one, but still based on the general idea of a possessed flame. I may have gotten some inspiration from Fiendfyre (I don't know if it's only in Harry Potter or if it's in other stories, too, but it's supposed to be a sort of fire that never dies out.

Rotory
Electric
Based on a battery. Evolves into Strikory starting at level 30.

Strikory
Electric/Rock
This one is supposed to be based on some sort of weapon and a battery - I don't know if I succeeded...?

Sinthum
Dark/Flying
IMO, Zubat is a pain in the ass - I mean, you can't enter a cave without having to deal with the blasted thing. So I made this. I was bored one day, and being creative, I drew this as a replacement for Zubat. It evolves into Murginat via happiness.

Murginat
Dark/Flying
Not much to say. I'm not too proud of this one, but I guess it's, well.. Decent.

Despite Besj08's delightfully helpful commentary, I think I'll share my thoughts on each sprite.

Gippy: Cute! Maybe it's because the underlying color is so dull in comparison, but it kind of looks like the green stripes are a little sunken in; maybe it would look better with a more subdued green? The outline doesn't look great in the upper left, it might look better if you removed the two dark pixels in the middle of the orange area. The outermost lines on the top and right sides of the back sprite are too short compares to the lines on either side of them.

Gulpel: I really like this one, but the outline is a bit iffy in spots. You need to round it a bit more where it curves back on itself, and the end of the tail tapers too quickly. The outline of the head above its eyes could stand to be rounded a little as well. The shading, especially the dithering, is great though.

Neptelp: Behind the fin, there's a long straight line... It looks kind of bad, animals don't normally have flat parts like that. The end of the tail also has a "long flat part" problem, and until I looked at it closely, I thought the tail ended in a mouth.

I don't really have anything to say about the Chinbi line, they're all good. The one issue I can see is dark spots in the outline of Molorch's head.

Rotory: The design is pretty plain, it could use a bit of flair, interesting details... it could also stand to be rounded some more. The arms don't really look like anything specific; are they supposed to be wires or something?

Strikory: I like the design of this one, but you should alter the parts you copied and pasted. Each spike should be unique.

Sinthum: The outline is sketchy in places, and halfway down its body it seems to have a clitellum... Unless there's earthworm somewhere in the mix, you should fix this. On the underside of the body, right where it comes off of the head, the outline dips in for three or four pixels; you should either extend this line toward the head, or eliminate it.

Murginat: I only see one problem with it: immediately off of the head, the outline on both the top and bottom of the body has lines that are too short at the curving point, kind of like what I just discussed on Sinthum.

Really nice sprites, I like to see someone using a restricted palette so that they'll work in the rom. It's also nice to see back sprites, most people seem to forget that half of a Pokemon game is spent looking at the Pokemon's back.

Thanks a lot for the feedback, I see what you mean about the outlining, it does look kinda odd in places, and the weird, flat line on Neptelp will have to be removed, and I've got to do something about it's tail. And yes, Rotory's arms were actually supposed to be wires, although they don't look much like it. Oh yea, and was it that obvious that I copied and pasted Strikory's spikes? Haha (:

About the palettes - I've used palettes from Pokémon sprites from the game, so that I can fit them very easily into my hack. For instance, I've used the Trapinch line as palette for the Gippy line and the Cyndaquil line for the Chinbi line. Kinda makes it easier, when you're not a master hacker, imo.

I do like them alot. BUT, there are some underlying tones in them that bug me...

firstly, they seem too geometrical... they're all very spherical or cylindrical... exceptions being chinbi, gulpel and nepkelp... the use of shapes is a good base for spriting, but if not made "rugged" looking, they characters look unnatural. Even more, they end up looking flat.

Which leads me to the next point. The shading. I think you have the backsprites nailed to the pokemon style quite perfectly... but you're bringing that style to the battle poses, and it's a bit too simplified. I feel that all the front sprites are lacking in shading definition. You could definitely utilize your lightest tone more.

Otherwise, they look very nice, and i'm rather pleased with them. Great job!

Keep Spriting!
