Ancient Mew

So the Ancient Mew card; I know it's a promo from the second movie that that no one's cared about for a while, but does anyone remember how there were two versions? I remember one was more desirable at the time than the other, they have a slightly different colouring from each other. Do any of you know exactly what the difference is?

spastman November 8th, 2009 10:38 PM

Like you see on this 2 pictures, the one get more color then the other one, and have also a patern in hes picture.

Thanks for the images spastman, I actually have them both but I was wondering why there were two made, like what's the whole story behind them?

spastman November 9th, 2009 10:54 PM

There's no story, its only a promo card.
This is the attack in english:

[P][P] Psyche 40

Redstar November 9th, 2009 11:46 PM

The first run had a typo so they had to correct that. I imagine they also toned down some of the features from the original run to make up for lost money, or they upped it to make up for the mistake.

If you can find one from the first run, with the typo, it's worth about $30 more.

Rocket_Executive November 10th, 2009 9:38 PM

Ok, I'm going to be even more of a nuisance :\
I don't have the one with the typo, there's that one PLUS the two versions without the typo, and those are the two I have. So yeah, anymore info would be appreciated!

Redstar November 12th, 2009 6:14 PM

Ah. No idea, then. It's probably just a case of artificial rarity by making a limited first (corrected) release followed by a second, cheaper-to-manufacture and therefore less rare release.

kacqn November 12th, 2009 6:16 PM

I got the second version of the card but I really didn't know how to read it.... It was a little mysterious though.

You can't read it, but this text was the text that pokemon give for this card.

SCV058 November 13th, 2009 6:08 AM

I once had one of these...
Traded it for a boxful of holos..

Rocket_Executive November 13th, 2009 9:18 PM

A whole box? Wow that's lucky, seeing as these Mew cards sell for like a dollar now!

gregorioTheOreo December 10th, 2009 2:14 PM

Wow, that's pretty cool. I can't tell you how many "Ancient Mew" cards I've seen. And I never even noticed that there were two! That's so cool! Now I have to run to my collection, to see if I have both!

I think it's funny when someone asks me to read it for them. Most people don't know that if you google it, the translation appears as one of the first few results. Also, if you've seen enough cards, you can pretty much tell what it does, just by looking at the card itself.

Rocket_Executive December 11th, 2009 10:23 PM

Not that the translation actually matters... somehow I don't think you could get away with playing this card out of your hand, lol.

At tournaments, No, you probably can't. I'm very 'lax about cards like that. If it's in a card-sleeve, it's back will look like the rest of the deck, so it's okay by me. Of course, the card isn't all that good, so I've never played against it.

Also, some people are just curious.

Rocket_Executive December 12th, 2009 11:21 PM

Sure, I guess it's good to know just for curiosity's sake. I'm just picturing someone attempting to play that at league, lol not only is it indecipherable but it's waaayy outside of the modified format. I think the pricelessness of seeing that card get played would more than make up for the fact that you would have to throw out the whole match.
One thing I've noticed is that there seems to be a recent revival of interest in this card, not really sure why.

Lol, I'd love to see that happen. Can't say for sure why it's become popular all of a sudden, but I've noticed other promo cards being re-made into the new sets. Surfing Pikachu, and Flying Pikachu for example. The artwork is exactly the same as their old counterparts, but they cards themselves have been completely remade supporting the platinum layout, with the level next to the card name and everything.

GlitchCity December 13th, 2009 6:50 PM

I practically begged my friend to trade me his ancient mew card like 2 weeks ago. I used to have one awhile back but I lost it (i was 7 and threw my pokemon across the fence by accident and a dog chewed them up)

Rocket_Executive December 14th, 2009 9:08 PM

Yeah, I was excited about the Surfing and Flying Pikachu reprints. I like the Base set Hitmonchan reprint too, because that was one of my first Pokemon cards, and it was nice to see it reprinted. I guess the recent interest isn't really in the card itself, more in its value; I can't even tell you how many people I've seen trying to sell the thing, claiming it to be "super-rare!!!!" or whatever, lol. People are picking up on the slight revival in the TCG and are trying to sell off their cards, problem is they have no idea what they're actually worth, which is not that much right now, unfortunately.

Lol GlitchCity, that sucks. Could be worse though, my friend walked into his room one day and his dog was standing there with a Lvl. X in his mouth XD

gregorioTheOreo December 15th, 2009 2:03 PM

Yeah, I know what you mean, but, I think as long as the game is alive, the cards will always be worth something. They seem to fluctuate like stocks in the stock-market. I think it all has to do with general interest in the game (outside the hard-core, true-blue pokemon fans). Pretty much a whole "Supply-and-demand" ordeal.

Rocket_Executive December 15th, 2009 6:06 PM

Exactly, there's always a higher interest in the cards when some other aspect of the whole Pokemon industry is popular. When the Platinum game came out, for example, there was this renewed interest in the cards that's still going strong, plus you have the Arceus movie which added to people's interest too. Skyridge and Aquapolis suffered a lot, however, because they came out when there wasn't much going on with Pokemon in general.
And yes, there will always be a small society of hard-core Pokemon fans who hang onto it forever. In general, though, the demand for Pokemon cards will fluctuate until they become "vintage"; they'll reach that point where they are old enough that they can be collected solely based on the fact that they are old, and their value will only rise after that. That won't happen for a long time though, not until long after they've stopped being printed altogether.

Yeah, definitely. My grandpa wants to sell all his old Pokemon Cards, I told him that the cards aren't selling for a whole lot right now, and that he's better off just hanging onto them. Lol, he tells me he probably won't get to see the day when Pokemon Cards are worth as much as baseball cards, so he just wants to get rid of them now, and take what he can get.

Rocket_Executive December 17th, 2009 11:47 AM

That's a sad outlook to have, he should enjoy the Pokemon cards! Lol I wish my grandpa collected Pokemon cards, that would be amazing.

Interesting... I don't really know where you got this little fact from, but I can tell you it's not true. You can't even get $10 for it on Ebay; compare that to things like trophy cards ($1000's) or even just PSA graded rare cards ($100's).
