Introduction

This is where I lurk...
Hello everybody, some of you might know me, others might not. Either way, I'm hereby presenting to you my latest hack, which also marks the start of a hack Tetralogy, called Pokémon Revolution. The first hack is Expansion. I hope that you will enjoy it as much as I expect. Now, some things about me.
I'm a fan of pokémon (obviously), my best part of rom hacking is spriting. My free time hobbies are drawing a freelance manga and playing drums, as well as dozing off. I'm 18 and pretty busy, uh, so that's about it.

Hack name: Pokémon Revolution I: Expansion
Hack of: Fire Red BPRE

Storyline

This is where you get excited...

The Past
He who holds the Monster Ball will bring despair to this world.

According to oral tradition, so long as chaos and evil has plagued our world, it has been balanced by order and good; when the hearts of men are seized by darkness, virtuous warriors appear, shining with an inner light. Such tales have been told throughout the ages, the brave heroes invariably victorious. However, reality isn't always so kind.... The evil ones kept thinking that since they have been defeated so many times, their chances of winning would increase every time, and so they kept struggling...with futile plans every time. Until a discovery changed everything.
Someone accidentally discovered an old chamber, deep inside a cave, during a trip on the Shaft Island. Inside the chamber, he found riches beyond imagination, a source of a weird liquid, and a pokéball on a throne. Having free claim on all that, he instantly gained power. However, this weird liquid, which he called Valsamo, not only was edible, but also had positive healing effects on both people and pokémon. The penetrator then decided to share the fountain of valsamo with the rest of the natives, as a generous action of happiness.
People started to gather around, all curious and such, quickly realizing the natural profit from this island's resources, among Valsamo. So many people from other regions got established there. Soon, the island grew up as a great city of all kinds of technological development and outstanding numbers of population. Cosmopolis, the island megacity was found.

The Present
Your divine quest begins.

You are a civilian of Cosmopolis, residing on the central part of the city. You and your best friend (the opposite gender) have always yearned to become Pokémon trainers. Seen battles from TV, and admiring the whole world of Pokémon, you can't wait to get your own and start a great adventure, be it in the centre of the city!
...
Who am I kidding?
You live in Cosmopolis, the human centre of the whole world, you almost never see a wild Pokémon running around, and all trainers are suspicious of the big city life to wander around this metropolis, showing off their beauties...
...but no. Mayor Al has declared that Cosmopolis will certainly take part in Pokémon activities! There will be preparations for the most ultimate trainer challenge, called the Global League. More information will be probably shown on TV. The mayor has applied the job for a new Pokémon Professor, Gabriel Guth, to transform several passionate youths into future trainers, in order to participate for the reputation of Cosmopolis. And they chose you and your friend among them! Talk about lucky!

The future
It's up to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is where you Faint from Any Quote...
[simple-spoil=answers to questions]

Storyline FAQ

Spoiler:
Q: What's a serial killer doing in a Pokemon hack?
A: Every city needs a serial killer. Cosmopolis has Porfyro (obviously).

Q: Can you tell me more about the Global Championship, the one Mayor Al announced?
A: Not much. Only that, if you get to participate in this tournament, you will find yourself battling 'elite four'-rank trainers from every region. Also, there's a prize when you win the Global Championship for the first time (if you win, that is), which is a Shiny Larvitar.

Q: What's the point of 'Valsamo'?
A: Will be shown later on the game. It replaces Energy drinks (such as soda pop and lemonade), though.

Features' FAQ
Spoiler:
Q: What exactly do you do on a trainer task?
A: Gym leaders won't fight you for the badge (nor will their fellow trainers). Instead, they send you on a quest, which depends on every gym leader, and reward you with a badge after it's done.

Q: What places are we going to visit in the four existing regions?
A: on KANTO, Vermillion and Cerulean, and their surroundings. On JOHTO, Olivine, Ecruteak and their surroundings. On Hoenn, Slateport, Mauville and their surroundings (yes, cycling road, too). I'll think about SINNOH, though.

Q: What is an 'online event'?
A: After a good release is made, and people are starting to play this hack, I will eventually do online events.
Except Zapdos/moltres/Articuno and Viblade[the legendary fakemon], other legendaries can only be found through an online event (or if you're extrememly lucky).
So, what I'm going to do is, on a specific day, I want people to PM or VM me signing up for the event. After that day is over, I'll PM those who had signed up with a way on how to catch a certain legendary in the game.

Q: Doesn't this get spread out though?
A: Yes, I can't prevent it, that's why there will be only one event for every legendary. Those who get to catch it, lucky them.

Ingame FAQ
Spoiler:
nothing yet as there has been no release.

Rest will be uploaded soon.

SPOILERS' PAGE

The first post was getting too long.

[simple-spoil=various spoilers]

Characters revolving around the storyline
Spoiler:
Characters

You [The Main Hero/ine - Named by you]
Not much to tell about you, just that there will be a lot of things unravelled. And one of them is your real destiny. Not just a mere trainer. Not just a mere League Champion. Not just a Hero. You're 15 years old when you set off.

http://i46.*.com/3536q75.pnghttp://i49.*.com/nd2d8m.png Josh and Carol
They are actually, you and your best friend. If you get the male version, your friend will be Carol. If you get the female version, your friend will be Josh. Your friend will usually assist you on your adventure, although some friendly battles will occur.
~His/her first Pokémon will be different on whether you play the male or the female version. Josh will get a Wooper and Carol will get a Remoraid.

Rival [Named by you]
Your rival is actually your older brother, also chosen to represent Cosmopolis. Your fates interact so much, but he always patronizes you as a younger sibling and underestimates you. He's not mean, but he will surely battle you to the end in order to get a step ahead of you. He always was ambitious.
~His first Pokémon is Vulpix. It's a kind, proud, and just kind of pokémon. Just what he isn't.

Mayor Al
He's the kind and hardworking mayor of Cosmopolis, always making sure everything in it are going by the clock. His ancestor was the one who made the legendary discovery.

Lez Rehctaet
He's a travelling merchant, and he will surely trade useful merchandise for a salty price when needed. You will find him in most places, he doesn't actually stay in one place. He's really busy. Rumour has it that he is way older than he appears...

http://i48.*.com/2s7b4mc.png Porfyro
He's a serial killer widely known for his horrible crimes. He is wanted everywhere, and the funniest part is that no one has actually confirmed any case of illegal action on his name, in public. Nobody has seen his face.
~It is said that his Pokémon specialized in assassination as well. The assumptions lead to a shiny Zangoose.

http://i46.*.com/zl7tq8.pngYar
Yar is a young resident of another continent, and while on an educational trip on cosmopolis got separated from the group and pretends to be a cosmopolis civilian, among those chosen to be the trainers.
~His first Pokémon is different, depending on the male/female version. On male he has a Seel, and on female he has a Shelder.

Balxvile
He's a rather speechless assistant of Prof. Guth. He lives in Cosmopolis harbor, and decided to become a trainer in honor of the city, and surpass any other. His weird name has caused people around him to create rumours of him being a puzzle maniac...
~His first Pokémon is Sneasel. And he's proud of it.As he should be.

http://i45.*.com/259h1zn.png Prof. Guth
He's a newly appointed professor for the Cosmo Island. He's young, and often can't see clearly, despite wearing glasses. He will give you many good stuff to help you on your quest, with the most significant being Dextroy.

Dragonic Journeymen Guild
A guild where mercenary trainers are given quests related to the salvation of the Pokémon world. Or so it seems...

The list of recurring characters is SO long, since you will meet many good and evil characters from R/B/Y to HG/SS, some gathering for the great event, and some already habiting Cosmopolis as a new home.

Starter - Only Hoppip
Spoiler:

Hoppip seems so underrated in normal pokémon games. I'm going to pump it up!
Movesets and stats are remade, evolution levels are: 18 -> 36.
It's rather unique in it's own way. And since it's your starter, better keep it and evolve it, because it's an one-off.

L 01 - Tail Whip
L 05 - Tackle
L 08 - Absorb
L 12 - Poisonpowder
L 14 - Stun Spore
L 16 - Sleep Powder

Features' details
Spoiler:
Let's split the list into...lists.
Note: One star next to the feature means it's about to be implemented. Two stars mean it won't be implemented yet. No stars means 'already implemented', obviously.

~Graphics:
  • New tiles*

Wonderful new tileset parts that fit with the Fire Red ones, as well as a great new pokemart/center by Scarf.

  • New Overworlds*

All OWs are completely remade (except for famous characters, such as Red/Blue/Oak, etc.)
When you find an item, it now has a correspondive overworld. For instance, balls looks like a pokéball, potions look like medicine, berries look like a fruit.

  • New sprites*

Authentic new sprites for trainers as well as new backsprites and intro sprites
386 Pokémon new poses!
custom item sprites
New, enchanting sprites for Pokémon moves!
Customized battle backgrounds

  • New textbox
  • Choose your clothes*

Another unique feature! Choose between a red and a blue outfit for the main hero!(female hero gets either green or blue) This, of course, puts in the male/female version of the hack.

  • Set off with brand new equipment models

Get new models for Fly and Surf moves, and do the hawaii style when you surf!
Equip a flametail motorbike instead of a regular bike
Get rollerskates instead of running shoes
Throw a fishing net instead of a rod to fish wild Pokémon
Let a fireflare loose instead of VS Seeker

~Fieldplay:
  • Explore Many places*

Visit parts of all four existing regions (KANTO/JOHTO/HOENN/SINNOH) as well as a whole new city-island with many hidden places!

  • Intriguing Maps

The ingame maps are not only good-looking, but they have a mysterious aura about them. Nothing is what it seems. Search some more!

  • Meet Dextroy, the talking Pokedex*

A Pokedex that talks? yes, indeed! That's Cosmopolis's technology for you. Dextroy will give you a lot of advice throughout the game on a lot of stuff, it will even remind you to save in important places!

  • Outstanding Scripts**

Never-seen before in a hack, 'meanwhile' scripts are involved. For example, you leave a building, and a text appears on a blackscreen saying: "meanwhile", then you get to another place to hear a conversation without you being around! This greatly affects the development of the storyline.
No more boring dialogues. 99% of the hack's talking scripts will have meaning to them, as well as they sometimes lead to a conclusion regarding many surprises.
Re-occuring events. Sometimes, you need to return, in order to move on...

  • Hidden Stuff everywhere

"this is a wall, right? I don't need to examine it or anything, I'll just move on".

  • Use of L and R buttons**

Yes! Finally, a useful find for both of those keystrokes, that originally open that 'help window', which's content we all know about.
L is supposed to open the World Map and R to automatically equip/deequip your motorbike.

  • Move tutors*

Oh yes, there will be lots of them, scattered around.

~Gameplay:
  • Complete the Pokedex

Catch 411 Pokémon (356 from the first 3 gens, 54 D/P/P Pokémon as well as one Fakémon). There is a list of the Pokémon that have been replaced switched with Sinnoh ones here.
For the hardcore readers, some new descriptions are added to the Pokedex.

  • Watch your Pokémon develop in a new way

Browse new movesets
View balanced stats
Experience different growth rates
Changed, balanced attack moves
Altered evolutions. There is a list for changes in this system here.

  • Hardcore Trainer battles

Although not hard enough to have you grind, the trainer battles start with a basic AI level, so watch out.
Throughout the game, you will meet a lot of rival who will want to battle you.

  • Catch Pokémon the hard way*

Wild battles in the grass have a wide variety of wild pokémon to battle, and there are rare ones that need thorough search everywhere
Many one-off pokémon, in order to make you understand the value of each pokémon caught.
Catch a big portion of the legendaries through online events! Learn about them here.

  • Fill your bag with customizations

Many new and(or) replaced items, some are key items, some are new berries, some are consumables.

  • Get to the league the other way round

Get trainer tasks that include investigation instead of battling Gym leaders for your badges.

Partial Decapitalization** (excluding items)

Will be updated soon. In order to give proof taken from the Features section.

Banjora Marxvile December 1st, 2009 12:05 PM

Oh good, mainly FR tiles. Yay, less for me to do!

Anyway, this looks good. Story is detailed (check your grammar a bit though). I look forward to inserting.

Daiko7 December 1st, 2009 12:14 PM

The only problem for me is... I can't get a Furret/Sentret D=

Other than that it is awesome =D

D. Lawride December 1st, 2009 2:07 PM

That's one mighty good job on the storyline, there! :D

And if you can get all those awesome features (gameplay, graphics etc.) you're earning a spot among the best hacks!

And you should do the Decapitalization. Seeing EVERYTHING LIKE THIS WHEN YOU SEE A NAME IS somewhat tedious.

On a side-note, I somehow assumed this was a good (emphasis on good) remake of the Battle Revolution game when I saw the name. xD

KingCyndaquil December 1st, 2009 2:41 PM

wow dude im so following this hack. what r the starters?

VectorEdge December 1st, 2009 4:56 PM

Wow, looking good! I'll keep a watch on this.

Vanitas~ December 1st, 2009 5:24 PM

Kudos. I agree with whoever-it-was who said that, if you can pull this off, it'll be one of THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME.
I'm curious, though, as to how you are going to pull of the Online Events.
...
Just skimmed the screenies. I noticed there was a button on a building. Does this mean we have to actually HUNT for things now? I always liked item hunting, and this is taking that one step further.

Onto the opinion of Decapitalization, I vote do it. I HATE capitalized names. That was the one thing that was always a fault to the PKMN games for me. Don't really know why.

DrFuji December 1st, 2009 8:21 PM

:DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

When you said you were getting busy, you sure weren't lying. Outstanding job, mate. Features galore and a good setting out - You've so much thought into this, I can't really come up with anything but praise and claims of you being mega-awesome.

If there is one thing I have to criticise you for, out of all the Pokemon, why no Heracross? He is super cool. D:

Decapitalisation: A vote for small letters is a vote for great justice!

Hope to catch more of your work as you progress! :P

Bela December 1st, 2009 9:46 PM

I have got to fix my thread up with some CSS ;x

From what I've seen here, this looks GREAT! I'm a little surprised that you would cut some Pokemon out of the game entirely, even if they're random wild Pokemon.

What's interesting to see work here is the online feature. It sounds like an alternative to Mystery Gift, and if that's what it is then this sounds very nice!

This idea of having a transition to a different setting in the middle of a script is something I will be trying my hand at in my hack, too.

I also like the idea of the story. A rich past makes for a good story! I'm putting money on Mayor Al being the true villian!

chrunch December 1st, 2009 10:29 PM

Wow, this is looking good! The only things I don't like are some of the pokemon
replaced and the FR tiles.

/Circa December 2nd, 2009 12:37 AM

As long as this hack doesn't have Heracross in it, i'm not playing ;)
But I wish you luck, some of the features really caught my attention, especially having a lot of one off Pokemon.

NiKaNoRoU December 2nd, 2009 1:32 AM

Updates

  • Added some stuff on the FAQ for better explanation of certain things
  • Due to popular AND personal demand, Heracross and Lapras are now catchable ingame
  • Fixed an ingame glitch, nothing important since there is no release yet
  • Finished mapping Cosmopolis Central
  • A screenshot revealing the Rival's face
  • After a second thought, I decided the following:
The R button won't be for save. I believe that the path you follow to save is good enough, and Dextroy will ask you to save automatically in many points, so I decided to switch it to motorbike. So that you can use SELECT for another thing.

Expect screenshots soon enough.

Thanks to you once again, some typos are already pointed out. Fixed a few myself.

One vote for +decap here.
Well unless I get a great scripter to work with me some of them will be unavailable, unfortunately. And at least the L/R feature requires ASM, I'm sure of it.

Yay, another +decap vote here. I now have online events explained on the FAQ section.

And no, you're not going to check every tile for something nifty, in that specific screenshot you are looking for a switch, but you have limited space to search on.

Item hunting is correct, though. About 80% of the dropped items are invisible (but in spots that can be found out...or you can keep spamming itemfinder)

Agreed, I'm a fan of BUGs, and heracross is a must. DEALT WITH.

+decap here, too, eh? seems like I get where this is going...

I just found one thing funny... The whole 'Outstanding Scripts'... I don't really think the 'meanwhiles' are really a feature worth mentioning, not that they won't be interesting...

Oh yes, they are worth mentioning. Because a big part of the storyline unfolds without the main hero being present. Just you (the user) viewing events far away from your hero's current position.

Online features are now explained.

Thanks for all the kind comments, good luck on that CSS!

Why is everyone against FR tiles? is it because you have overplayed with them? they match the game perfectly. Many custom tilesets are limited and get repeating after a period of time, while the game's default tiles have a variety of over 50 different tilesets...

But I wish you luck, some of the features really caught my attention, especially having a lot of one off Pokemon.

Yay for you then, Heracross will now be in the game.
Yes, I thought it was about time to show that many pokemon deserve to be as unique as legendaries (without scratching the breeding part, though).

Don't ya think this could use a little more work?

You should POINT out
what parts are needed to improve.

Well, Nika, this is awesome!
I can't believe you're working on a Hack!
Keep up the good work!

Wtf? I'm sure he'll do more before beta release ;)
I strongly disagree with you, this is like it should be ;)

Hey, NiKa!

As you know, I'm really excited with this. The features are epic, especially the utilization of the L and R keys. I also like the name of the talking 'dex, Dextroy. Reminds me of Dexter, Ash's Pokédex in the animé. Good luck!

Oh, and, by the way, here's a support bar:

Thanks, I don't understand why it's a surprise for me to work on a hack, but oh, well.
Thanks again.

Hell yeah, I have so many things to implement before the beta.

Thanks for the support, and the userbar! It's really awesome, outstands mine!

Added. Of course.

love the idea of visiting parts of all the reigons ... looks like this will be a sucess

trebornosliw December 2nd, 2009 1:37 PM

Looking great NiK! You're really good at coming up with original ideas for your hacks.
...is that, could it be, do mine eyes see a Scizor evo on that title screen? Guess I'll find out...
This'll be one epic Christmas release.
Oh, erm, do remember to back up...often. I'm still mourning the death of BCL...
...
Not much else to say. Nice plot, and I personally think the normal FR tiles are the way to go, other tiles are a pain in various unmentionable regions of human anatomy.
Good luck!

Intense .. must be real attentive when you're going out or not he'll kill you.lol joking :P

THe story made me to be a little curious in wanting to know more of the story.
Job well done.

A pokedex that can talk? Seems a little ambitious but not if you got a good ASM HACKER.

NarutoActor December 2nd, 2009 3:59 PM

The story line is great but I am biases for the fact that it reminds me of mine :D

Choose your clothes*
so there will be two versions? I got happy at first an thought you incorporated a clothing store. (oh well)

With the roller skate, what type of stly will the players use( yah I used to roller skate before rom hacking so this is a personal curiosity.)

The maps look nice, so far but there are not that manny screen shots. Hope to see more.

PS. You should learn scripting it's so fun! and you can learn it quickly.

Banjora Marxvile December 2nd, 2009 11:52 PM

Hmm... The 3 starters may need rethinking NiKaNoRoU (wow, I didn't look at your name!), as... well, they are all Super Effective on each other, but Bug doesn't do much to Poison I think... And the Poison won't do much to the Ground on that Bug... So... That may be an issue.
