Downtown Host is amazing. Seriously, saul, it's worth the money. I'm on a shared bronze account - it's $7.95 a month if you pay yearly, and there was a 25% off coupon when I signed up. According to their site they still have one - "happy2009" is the code, so it's like $75ish a year. The support's outstanding and I don't think I've ever had any downtime with them. I've actually been happier with them than I was with Elixant (though Elixant was awesome too). And switching to them was painless - they took care of the moving and I didn't lose anything.

So, anyone interested in any projects? I'm looking for some help on something I've been working on.

So this will basically be a large amount of different sections, all to a main site (F.A.D.), which will basically just be a site that just links people places. I just always wanted a place that I could go for all the best links to things that I need, quickly, and without having to sort through a list of bookmarks or dig through links on Google.

So yeah, if someone likes to do research and knows quite a bit about a certain subject (Not even namely Pokemon, considering I'm hoping to do multiple subjects), doesn't have anything to do, and wants to help out, just let me know here, VMs, or PMs.

And don't judge the layout, it's just a quick mock up so I can have a physical idea about what I might do with the site. Also it's nice to have it for situations like this to show people. It's far from final, believe me.

(Please, Faltzer, avoid the comments about how idiotic this idea is and how it'll be a waste of web space, not that you'd do something like that. :P)

I would love to help with this. Anime fandoms is my specialty and I can even write up reviews if you want. I think this is a great idea and I would love to be part of the team.

Thanks for this review. I might consider Downtown Host whe I'm ready to buy a host now (they actually do seem very good, professional and great value for money.)

Alright, well, send me a PM and I'll let you know when we get started. Um, I've recently talked this over with one of my irl friends and he's quite the genius. So basically, it'll be the same concept, but it'll be different enough that you'll notice, thanks to a great number of ideas he added in.

pokejungle December 10th, 2009 2:03 PM

Yeah, I'm not too hot on the logo. Interesting idea though!

I'd just suggest making sure the links can have ratings so it can aggregate them based on quality.

Ooka December 10th, 2009 4:05 PM

Hm, nice suggestion. :P

I've actually got someone else programming it for me now, since I'm not good enough/too lazy to do it. XD I'll let him know.

Eon-Rider December 10th, 2009 6:30 PM

Sorry for suddenly popping in and changing the topic but wow they finally moved this forum. o_o

I only put the squeeze on ideas I find that hold no actual value, contrary to what the creator is proposing. Spinarak.net didn't really go anywhere, so this is good.

Ooka December 12th, 2009 9:04 AM

Well, there's been an update on the projected ideas that I originally had.

Quote:

The project is called F.A.D. (Find Anything Database [Or Find All Database]), and what the objective of it is, is that we'll be creating a site, mainly managed by the users (A lot like Wikipedia), expect it's for links. Basically, when you search in a search engine, sometimes you get a lot of crap results, or else it's hard to find the really good ones, so the objective is for users (As well as staff of course) to submit links per subject that contribute greatly to a subject. It's basically a database of links (Like a search engine), however, the links are researched and known to be great links, that way you won't ever find any links that you don't want on a certain subject.

The main inspiration for this project is my irl friend Chris, who has (literally) thousands of links in his bookmarks because he professionally sells items on Ebay. They're all research links with the best of the best information on them, however, he lacks a place to just keep them all and share them with the world, so with the site, he'll be able create a user profile, add the links he wants (Which can be reported by other members if they aren't good enough), gets points on his profile for adding them, and then can have a list of favorites in different sections on his user page.

So what do you guys think of Content Management Systems? I got the chance to recently play around with one, but I dunno, it seemed like cheating. Though everything was really tough to learn there was great payoff.

As another question, what would you think of a site that uses a Content Management System.

You use a scripting language to include fragments of your layout on every page that will use it without having to copy and paste. To say that CMS's are cheating would be to put that in the same league. As far as their usage goes, they should not be overlooked unless the concept of one does not fit with the size of your site or what you are trying to accomplish, and rightfully so. CMS's are like software frameworks; they remove the heavy lifting that you shouldn't have to do if all you're focusing on is getting your task done. Many large and small-scale sites alike use CMS's, whether home brew or third-party.

I chuckle at those talking about hosting now-a-days... I'll never go back to shared hosting after owning a dedi. It's a bit more, but I love having the free reign to do whatever the hell I want. :D

jerking is a form of hip-hop dance. It started in LA, California in 2008. It became popular by 2009 around the US. Now, in 2010 Jerkin has spread all over the world! When i get 50 members, my dance group, and some other ones that agreed, will creat a jerkin tutorial including all the new advanced moves!
Please Help me Out and Visit: http://www.jerk4life.tk
If i get enouph active members i will creat a ".com" which will make my site jerk4life.com

Why do you need 50 members in order for you to make a tutorial for the dance style? Why not just make a head start and make the tutorial so you can actually attract attention to begin with? Why are you using a pre-made Webs template? Why are you using web masking instead of buying a real domain? If you are trying to establish some form of social network, Freewebs is a terrible choice for that.

Also, Webs is retarded; why are they making Webs ID? It makes a lot more sense to use OpenID.

That still doesn't answer my question; why not just do it before your 50 members? You don't have much to give them; you want too much for too little. That's not how the web works.

That technique only works when you establish a community (a user-base that will stick with you and actually cares enough to assist).

mr. ck January 25th, 2010 8:16 AM

That isn't gonna work... But you can try, we all did once, and failed miserably D:

And not to forget... It's called "jerking"

Anyway... I got a question... How do you guys promote your sites and blogs... I know its usually all the directories and search engines, what else and which all precisely?

aRedMoon January 25th, 2010 6:58 PM

I don't promote... I just let it go by word-of-mouth (or hand, in the case of typing)

BlueEew February 3rd, 2010 5:39 AM

Anyone used vBulletin 4 yet, if so what you think about it?

aRedMoon February 14th, 2010 5:17 PM

I still haven't decided if I'll upgrade. I have a few months left on my lease of 3.8 but I kinda wanna keep it :\

Pikachu Trainer~ February 20th, 2010 4:12 AM

Could I have your thoughts on my new layout, that I have almost completed for my site? Its just a test, so theres hardly any clickable links on it yet, thanks :D
