Congratulations on winning July's Hack of the Month.

(Award coming soon.)

Stickied~

Kip August 2nd, 2010 1:46 PM

AWESOME!

This has been a long time coming and is richly deserved! Many congrats to such a superb hack and of course the mastermind behind it!! ^^ Woooooo!

SephirothX August 9th, 2010 8:00 AM

This hack is freakin' amazing. I'm really impressed with the scripting and the story (and the sense of humor that Nintendo lacks... "Look, I'm getting really tired of your bit- She hung up!" xD) I thought that sewer map bit was just brilliant, and I gotta admit, kicking hobos in a Pokémon game made my day.
There's just one little oopsie that's been bugging me: Vixie, the *female* Vulpix that you save early on... is male. Let me say that again. When you trade a Hoppip for Vixie, *she* is *male*. I didn't know trading could cause sex changes in Pokémon. xD
Otherwise, this is probably in the top three hacks I'm enjoying the most (and I can't decide an order for those three... I'm also playing like twelve hacks right now xD). I've actually been neglecting the others to keep up with this one's story. :3

Azurill does that when it evolves sometimes. ;3

(something about having different gender ratios to Marill/Azumarill so if it is in the overlap or w/e it changes gender!)

OK, that is hilarious.
By the way, I played a bit further since my last post, and I gotta say, the "cardboard box!" bit made me laugh. Also, a little typo: When you get the key, Lilah nags at you a bit, and then *you* say "Now get yer ass down there!" (or something to that effect). Green text,
Player's name, and all. I think that's Lilah's line, though. ;)

kamranh1 August 9th, 2010 12:53 PM

Love it, starters are my only problem though :/

jake ranson August 10th, 2010 11:22 AM

Hey I loved the beta. It was the best hack I have ever played. It really isn't that long if you take out the sewers. I spent forever trying to find a Pokemon to learn cut. (Sentret). I found a glitch too. If you pick up an item, beat the beta, come back all items go back to before you got them. Just wanted to point that out. And I have an Idea for the "badge" system. Everytime the twins "inform" you about your past and future, it counts as a badge. Maybe you could use that as the chapter thing too. (cause i couldn't figure out when one chapter ended and another one began. And Why do you start out with a badge. Is it from the machine in the lab? Is that what you planned to use as a badge system instead?

SephirothX August 10th, 2010 7:05 PM

AH! F$%&! Cliffhanger! I didn't think the beta would be so short. I had actually committed to NOT playing any other hacks 'til I cleared the beta. I made that commitment *yesterday*. :(
Kickass hack, though. It's about time somebody scrapped the old *battle, get a badge, beat some goons, get another badge* story clichés. I love the storytelling and scripting. I just don't love how cramming that much scripting into such a short frame of game time makes for short releases (I don't blame you though -- at least you CAN script, that's better than I can claim).
Itching for the next chapter! :D

By the way, would it be better to save *before* Lilah -- er, y'know, the last event -- or are you gonna throw in a script to, like, warp us from the last city to where we're supposed to be if we saved after the beta ended?

Slasher790 August 10th, 2010 8:07 PM

Hm Ill have to try that some time its looks AWESOME

Ocarion August 13th, 2010 7:05 AM

I really enjoyed this hack, possibly one of the best I've ever played. It's very suspenseful and it makes perect sense in every part of the chapter. The glitches I saw weren't too bad and I can't wait until you release the next couple chapters!

VGAura August 13th, 2010 9:13 PM

I want to thank everybody for their support.
When I do release the second demo, you can load up your old save, but make sure it's before the last event.

Personally, I'd rather you play through chapters 1 and 2 again because you get to see and experience new sprites + new chapter 1 ending + new chapter 2 area and sidequest + a new feature that I'm gonna try to implement.

But if you're really eager to continue the story and jump into the 3rd and 4th chapters, I'm not gonna stop you.
Just saying that you'll be missing out on some cool stuff if you do. :)

I'm definately going to start the game again when you release the second demo.

I really can't wait to see how much more amazing it's gotten.

gogoplata August 18th, 2010 1:49 AM

creative, exiciting, and fresh. The concept of beating gym eaders for badges is fun but the way this hack comes across is a breath of fresh air. The story is compelling, the humor isn't cheesy, and the whole characters story is creative. The starters are different as well and im enjoying this hack a LOT. can't wait for the next beta!

aka825 August 18th, 2010 3:05 AM

Okay, in short,... THIS IS THE BEST HACK I EVER PLAYED!!!!!!!! I can't wait for the next beta!

ThaWinnerGON August 22nd, 2010 12:41 PM

Brilliant hack dude, just got finished playin through it so far. Lilah betrayin me :O --- caught me off guard. I just thought she was some b!+chy chick. Not sure if I wanna start all over though...worked my donk off tryin to raise Cutty the Nincada til he evolved so I had a Ninjask and a Shedinja. Guess I'll make time again for it.

By the way...Vixie ended up gettin a sex change for me too when I traded for her (him) XD

Good to know that it's still going strong VG. I'll probably restart my game as you suggest to see all those neat improvements. ^^ Keep it up!

KingDoubt August 22nd, 2010 4:37 PM

Best hack I've ever played. Ever.

However, I found a glitch: In the bit with the sewers, in the second set of sewers when Lilah heals you, if you die after that then you can't get back into the sewer because the bridge is flipped and there's no switch. (I used a walk through walls to get past it.)

I'm glad to see you are putting more time into the art. All the sprites are looking great. If anyone could tell me how to support it I would. A truly awesome game. The only thing I'm kind of mad about is my kirlia's psychic (aka strongest) attacks don't affect Nuzleaf. And can you Galade in the hack? Other than that I really think this is the best hack I've ever played.

Im def gonna start dis game over again from scratch i played it like 3 times after i completed the first demo. That was a few months ago since i last played it. Anyway this is the best hack i have seen so far. At first i just kept wandering if i should play it but then your story idea just drew me in dude.

Dis hack is truely a work of art forget nintendo lolz you are the true mastermind.(Sorry for my grammar but im tired and cant be bovered to speak properly)

nasonex September 16th, 2010 7:09 PM

This Hack really deserves the HotM!

It looks cool especially the plot.

Nice tiles VGAura, Can't wait for your next Update.

It's been a while now and I hope all goes well
in your Hack!

SonicBlazePlatinum October 7th, 2010 3:21 AM

VGAura I like how you use default tiles. You don't see a lot of them in ROM Hacks nowadays... When the next demo or whatever is out I will play it obviously.

VGAura October 7th, 2010 8:02 AM

Thanks =)
However, I don't think I'll keep using them because I'm having a hard time getting the environment to look the way I want with Kanto's mostly urban tileset.

But Identity looks so amazing with FR tileset. What tiles exactly do you need?

I agree - that was one of the things that made Identity different because it didn't have a somewhat gimmicky tileset (*cough* DP Tiles *cough*) and focussed on story rather than graphics. However, what might be interesting is instead of substituting for another tileset totally, the FRLG one is simply extended. So more graphics in the FRLG style?

But at the end of the day it's your hack VG and it's entirely up to you what you do. ^^

VGAura October 8th, 2010 1:11 PM

The most important tileset change that I want to make is the sewers.

But in addition to that I have a prairie environment so I need buildings that are more...umm...natural?

Well, I'm planning on having something like the buildings in Fortree and Pacifidlog but on mountain and desert environments.

TB Pro October 8th, 2010 2:03 PM

Prarie buildings you say? Something like this:

VGAura October 8th, 2010 9:34 PM

Yes, that building is just what I was thinking of, from the wooden walls to the straw roof. Is that from one of your tilesets?

chrunch October 8th, 2010 9:49 PM

exactly - you could extend the FR tileset with some stuff like that, maybe? In my opinion it would be much better than new tiles.

samiixx October 18th, 2010 11:58 PM

best storyline ever!!!!!!!! totally addicted... eagerly awaiting release of next beta. :) :) :)

Cutlerine October 27th, 2010 8:08 AM

This is, without a shadow of a doubt, my favourite hack ever. I downloaded it a couple of days ago and played it through in about an hour, unable to stop. It's just so good. Keep up the excellent work!

EJ October 28th, 2010 5:08 PM

This hack is quite awesome. Keep up the good work bro.

Waiting for the next...

Endless.Eclipse October 30th, 2010 1:56 PM

Im really enjoying this hack so far, I think it has a great plot and some nice ideas behind it. I did find a bug that may or may not have been noted. In the pokemon center in the lighthouse, if you stand on the blue or yellow chairs at the far right against the wall you can walk through the wall to the right of them and go quite a distance into the black space around the center. Hope this helped

Geno9213 October 30th, 2010 9:02 PM

I just played through it. It's great! The ending of the demo was a great way to...end it. Can't wait for the next beta or demo! One little thing though. In the sewers, if you leave the bridges a certain way after leaving, you can't access the sewers anymore.

XDragonRiderX November 13th, 2010 12:58 PM

Is this a glitch or what because I can access Erika's gym and Celadon's Department store?

VGAura November 13th, 2010 5:07 PM

Does this happen before or after the demo ends?

aka825 November 14th, 2010 2:09 PM

Your hack is the best one on Pokecommunity.
I keep replaying it, wanting it to never end.
My friend (who does not play pokemon hacks usually, but came over one day and has the equivalent of a doctorate in pokemon) agreed this was one of the best pokemon games out there (including releases).

wingman11 November 19th, 2010 2:31 PM

Wow. This hack. I absolutely love this. I played through the whole demo, and I am VERY impressed. Everything was very well scripted, and the maps were ingenious. They were laid out with a lot of care it seems, and they all seemed much more realistic than any other maps I've seen. Especially the jumbled slums of Silvertone City. There were a lot of small grammatical errors, but those should be easy to correct, especially with that list you got.

I only have two things to say:
One) A map of the sewers would've been very handy; I got way too lost in there.
Two) I really think that it needs custom music, or at least remixes of the existing music. Walking in the slums and hearing the Vermillion City song (I think) did not give off the right vibe. :P

All in all, I'm really looking forward to the release of your next demo. Stupid cliffhangers.

That, my friend, is the end of the current demo. I believe the Unown that called itself VGAura said that before you regained control of your character. As for what to do now, you wait for the next demo to come out.

Zetsubou Johnny November 22nd, 2010 4:35 PM

When my ex left me, I didn't cry. When my cat died I didn't cry. When everyone forgot my birthday I didn't cry. At the moment i am BAWWING like a baby because i want more. I need more. I desperately desire more. This is the best pokemon game i have ever played. Keeping Colosseum and emerald in mind, this blows them out of the water. I am very glad I discovered this game this late in the year so I don't have to suffer very long waiting for the next part. I wasn't that invested in the PokeCommunity Forum before aside from downloading random hacks but now i am glued here waiting for your next move. I desperately desire more. I only wish i had some hacking skills or experience so i could be an active part of this hack aside from it's number one fan.

Then after the "regain session" can I go to the Sunrise Town?

SonicBlazePlatinum November 28th, 2010 8:49 AM

You won't be going to Sunrise Town in a LONG time probably. I think you might be going there in the final beta? Unless VGAura has different ideas or something like that.......

ShadowDragon3812 November 28th, 2010 4:52 PM

Just finished the demo, and I have to say, it was great. No glitches at all. The story was great, and a lot of things being blocked off makes me even more eagerly await the next demo. Also, the ending was great.

Looking forward to the next demo!

Kip November 28th, 2010 6:50 PM

Just checking in to say congrats on getting fourth place in the Hack of the Year competition this year VG. Identity did really well considering what it was up against. Hopefully we can all pull together and get Identity to the top next year! :) Keep it up!

SonicBlazePlatinum December 6th, 2010 5:45 AM

Congrats for getting that place in the HotY thing! Oh and in 25 days it will be the one year anniversary for Pokemon Identity! Maybe a new screenshot of what's to come in the next demo but you should decide for yourself what to do.

VGAura December 6th, 2010 8:48 AM

Thanks, everyone will get more than a couple of screenshots of the next demo. As I mentioned many times before (and in the first demo itself) I will release the next demo on New Years.
Look forward to it. :)

anyways, good luck with the demo, I'm really excited - I was hoping you'd release it earlier, but good luck anyways. :3

What turns me off is the starters :P

Glaciezxstar December 16th, 2010 9:27 PM

This is a great hack. I can't wait for the next demo. Also, the sewers seemed to be abit tedious to go through because of the many trainers and the maze. :\

Lopnis December 18th, 2010 12:37 AM

This was amazing I have to say especially for just being the Demo the first thing that hooked me was the story it always left me guessing and it still has me hooked with how you ended the demo what else is you gave me other things to do like those little side missions you could do in the beginning atleast I think they were side missions and hope that more will appear later on there is also your Characters they actually feel like they have life even those characters that just pop up like Kaius finally and this one may sound strange but pokemon placement I like that you had more choices of what kind of pokemon I could build my team with which is something I apperciated the only problems I had were with direction in the forest it took me awhile to find out were to go and the sewers were a bit confusing and frustrating since there were many doors and it was rather difficult to find the right one maybe you could change the doors and entryways that lead to the surface a little so you it's easier for the player to find it.

"When you're done beating up the homeless, try the other sewer exit."

Best line I've read in the entire demo. Oh, and by the way, this is fantastic so far. Keep up the good work with this. :3

Ocarion December 26th, 2010 5:30 PM

I spent 15 minutes looking for clues on when the next demo would be released. And I'm glad it'll be availible on new years. This is seriously my favorite hack of all time.

Didn't play the hack, but watched a playthrough of it. At the end of the beta, VGAura tells you in the form of an unknown icon that the next beta will be released this New Years. It looked really good though in the playthrough I watched. I was just busy with other stuff to bother trying it myself.

Until very recently did I consider playing this hack. Except I figured I'd might as well wait for this upcoming beta before going on with starting the game.

VGAura December 29th, 2010 10:18 AM

I will not be able to release the next version on new years as promised.
I encountered some major problems during testing involving the hacked engine.
I couldn't make Identity work properly and, to be honest, it was a huge mistake to not test it out before inserting the new maps and scripts.
(I applied the patch of the hacked engine first, then the patch of Identity)

In the worst case scenario, I will have to transfer all maps and scripts manually.
I'll try to find a way around this problem but as it stands, it is currently unplayable.

Either way, you have our support regardless. Keep working on it. :)

SkieTheKitsune December 29th, 2010 10:39 PM

Oh, no, not bad stuff! D:

Well, nevertheless, I wish you all the luck in fixing it.

D: this is definitely NOT what i wanted to hear... But, I shall still be eagerly awaiting it nonetheless.

By the way, I'm sure you don't know the answer, but... Is there any time period that we could expect this to be fixed? End of Jan. or Feb would sure be nice :3

XDragonRiderX January 1st, 2011 11:10 PM

Kill me.... now... JK, too bad! What was the problem?

chrunch January 3rd, 2011 3:12 PM

you just ruined my whole year
I was looking forward to playing this, but oh well, things like this happen. ;_;
do you have any idea how long the setback would be?

VGAura January 3rd, 2011 8:32 PM

A couple of things went wrong.
  • The game black screens when it asks for your name in the beginning.
  • I forgot that the hacked engine erases pre-existing scripts.
  • Could not get new sprites to show up properly.

I've decided to manually transfer all of the maps, scripts, sprites, etc.
On the plus side, it means that I can clean up my older scripts.

As for how long it would take, this is quite troubling because the reason I planned on a new years release date is because I'm really busy this month and will not have a lot of time to even fix those problems.

Hey dude - these things happen. At least you're keeping us well informed ^^ unlike some other mysteriously delayed hacks I could mention... I'm curious though, what advantages does the hacked engine have over the standard one (without giving away plot points of course ;) ).

VGAura January 5th, 2011 9:00 AM

The hacked engine will let me switch the overworld sprite and many of its other features will let me create actual puzzles as opposed to mazes that I've only done so far.

Also, the ability to add near-infinite amounts of overworld palettes and sprites is a nice thing to have.

nicholaszero8 January 6th, 2011 3:17 AM

What does the level of genetic engineering mean ?

voicerader January 6th, 2011 9:45 PM

Meaning it (probably) wont be released this month. That's all I was asking.

The Corrupt Plague January 12th, 2011 6:09 AM

That's okay, VG. I would actually rather play a hack that has been tested thoroughly and well polished than one that has been rushed and full of bugs. I would like to see you take your time on it because that make it much better and more refined. Like I said earlier, I really enjoyed the demo and I expect great things when the next one does appear. Good luck!

RuRuBell January 13th, 2011 11:09 AM

Naturally it's a bit of a shame that it's delayed, but I'm willing to wait-these things happen, of course, and I'm sure that you're trying your best. I'd be willing to wait another year to play more of this hack. ;)

Good luck!

Sierraffinity January 14th, 2011 5:10 PM

Hey, VGAura, there IS a tool for the hacked engine. If you have a pretty recent copy, you can use the tool instead. It will not erase pre-existing scripts, and you can choose WHERE to apply the things to... meaning that nothing will be overwritten!

If you don't have backups... how have you even gotten this far???

VGAura January 14th, 2011 6:58 PM

Do you mean the hacked routine applier?
It doesn't create the table at 0x1A2000 that allows us to create our own OW tables.

Also, I do have backups but they're either:
From before I applied the hacked engine - These backups work but many scripts that uses the hacked engine weren't implemented yet. (Even if I do implement them, they won't work without the hacked engine)
or
After I applied the hacked engine - These backups black-screens once the player gets asked to input their name.

Sierraffinity January 14th, 2011 7:14 PM

Well, it's probably not created at 0x1A2000 because you input its offset into the program.
Use the tool and implement everything into addresses of your choice. Then put the things you implemented afterward into that copy (after testing, of course).

VGAura January 14th, 2011 10:11 PM

I don't think the applier has an option that creates the new OW table because it never prompts you for an offset, and I tried everything in that tool.
That's why I need the hacked engine to work.

Also, I don't think it creates the new palette table either.

Sierraffinity January 15th, 2011 7:10 AM

It creates the new OW table, you have to apply the Overworld hacks and then click "Get changed data". As for the palette table, you'll probably need to repoint that manually.

VGAura January 15th, 2011 7:17 PM

You're right, the routine applier does create the new OW table, I just have to find it.

Rais January 19th, 2011 2:06 PM

are you making good progress VG? it would make me ever so happy if you are :D

You need the following 3 things-

1. An emulator. (Since this is a hack of a GBA game I recommend VBA- (by the way, that's VisualBoyAdvance if you don't know), but you can always pick something else)
2. A clean FireRed rom. (Specifically the English rom. If you want to get even more specific, use the file name that is given in the first post. I ain't giving anything out because linking to roms is not allowed, obviously.)
3. An IPS patcher. (I recommend Lunar IPS, but again, you can always pick something else.)

Download the IPS patch, use the patcher to patch it to a copy of the rom, rename the rom to (preferably) the title of this hack, and bingo, you've got yourself a demo of Pokemon Identity. I hope that was helpful.

Played this through twice cuz it was so good.
Games should be like this, it's indepth and totally different.
Sucks to hear that you're facing some trouble and it's not coming out yet but hope you can fix it all up and take your time, we're all waiting eagerly but patiently.
:D Good Luck.

I am not far into the demo yet but so far it is an amazing game. I love the fact you can choose a Ralts as your starter, it is tied with Umbreon at being my favorite pokemon.

pizzaz007 February 5th, 2011 7:14 PM

Well, during my first playthrough of this game (I LOVED it by the way), I found a game breaking bug. When you get the guards key and go down into the sewers and the girl lets you in (sorry, i forgot her name :P), if you die while wondering in those sewers, you can never be let through again, because she doesn't come to get you. You probably need to fix that bug, but other than that, the game looks EPIC :D

Great hack! The Silvertone Slums or whatever they're called seem impossible to get through. I think you should have it least changed the OW of ID though.

SuperSmash5 February 15th, 2011 6:59 PM

While I haven't played altogether many hacks, this one is my absolute favorite by far. It's the only hack I've come across that is heavily based around what appears to be developing into a deep and very gripping story. I loved the cliffhanger even though it was spoiled because I read too much of this thread. :( There were some parts of it that I thought were a little forced like the fact that the main character is suddenly a robot and the deal with timeless grove, but I won't be too critical because I know you've already completed the story. I would just recommend maybe lengthening the opening a little. I don't know how intensive that would be but I don't think it would be too hard to add a few more lines of dialogue and maybe make the run through the base just a little longer. It just felt really fast with the 'leg-enhancements'.

As far as game mechanics go, there was only one thing that I felt was somewhat annoying and that was how hard it was to find the second exit to the Silvertone Sewers with so many doors. There were also a lot of trainer battles down there, perhaps a few too many.

The only other thing I might suggest is perhaps modifying the starters a little more. To be honest, with the exception of Ralts, I found them to be rather off-putting. Changing the stats and some of the moves was nice, but I think you might even be able to take it farther. For example, you could give Ralts moves like Shadow Ball, Shock Wave, Disable, Psywave, Confuse Ray, Recover, or Mist Ball. You could give Seedot/Nuzleaf moves like Quick Attack, Mach Punch, Detect, Sleep Powder, Stun Spore, Spore or Beat Up. Machop only has normal and fighting type moves so you could try things like Rock Tomb, Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Thunderpunch, Earthquake, or Outrage. I also thought Pound would be more appropriate than Tackle for Ralts but whatever.

I like coming up with interesting and surprising movesets for pokemon, but those are really just ideas that I thought I might share if you wanted to steal some of them or use them to help think of some movesets of your own, or not. I don't want to get in the way of whatever direction you're taking this hack.

The mysterious woman is someone's sister and YOU chose the name at the beginning of the gameplay. I don't remember all the deails because it has been a while ,but its still mt favorite hack of all time.

No, the woman is not ID's sister, or at least we do not know yet. We do not get to name her; in fact, she has no name other than "Mysterious Woman". The actual sister we name in the intro is not involved at any point of the game, except the blackout (if I remember). Just wanted to clarify.

VGAura March 7th, 2011 9:45 PM

I didn't want to do this but each day that passes convinces me more and more. After 2 months of not being able to work on it, its clear that I cannot keep up with the time and energy required to make significant progress on this hack anytime soon. Therefore, I've decided to suspend this hack for now. When the time comes where I find that I have enough free time to make a good amount of progress on this hack, I will try to get as much done as possible.

But in secret.

If it turns out I REALLY cannot finish the hack, I'll convert all of the in-game dialogue and events into a short novel and post it in the Fan Fic and Writing forum, so the full story will be revealed one way or another.

Semyaza March 8th, 2011 4:19 PM

Thank you for the update. I am sorry to hear of your troubles and wish you luck in their resolution.

aka825 March 8th, 2011 4:47 PM

....:'(

There is nothing more to say. If this game ends it's existence, well... A fan will unfortunately take over. But it will not be the same. It never is. I hope that you will find all the free time you require.

Cheering for you and Id!

I don't think a fan will take over. a) No one ever took over ShinyGold, b) we have very good staff in Emulation and I don't think they'd allow a random person to just take over someone else's hack that they've worked their ass off for.

But yeah, hope you find more time to work on this, VGAura. It was, imho, one of the best hacks around. :(
