Hey guys I have a problem, my GCSE options are up soon, and I want to choose subjects to be a game designer, in the future. I'm interested in being one in the future, but I'm having second thoughts on being one. Mainly because, my brother, who wanted to be one in future, was interested but he later on lost interest, moved on from gaming and chose to something else. Also because of the fact that many people keep telling me that soon, as I grow older I will lose interest. I don't know what to choose out of what I'm interested in right now or whats best for the future. Please help me.

Focus on your ambition, while keeping a fallback. I basically flipped a coin between Physics and Psycology and it chose Physics but my first few subject choices were geared so that I could always change to Psycology. Once I had thoroughly over 2 years decided that indeed Physics was my career I started aiming towards it. You should think the same way. Also, if you pick the subjects you enjoy you can then use them to get into a career you enjoy. Asuming GCSE's are the equivelant to Scotland's Standard Grades (only SG's are harder!) then it shouldn't matter too much university-wise as they all look for Highers and you can always crash subjects if you need to. To summarise:

  • Go for your ambition, but keep a fallback choice in mind when picking subbjects just in case.
  • Pick the subjects you enjoy, and you will use them for a career you enjoy.
  • Don't get too worried as GCSE's are not that big a deal anyway.

Good luck!

It's understandable to lose yourself. My best advice form experience is to do something fun with all of your friends, or go watch some funny movies. Just do things to take your mind off the grief for the moment

After punching a locker sixteen times, the knuckles of my right hand are bruised and swelling. However, I now have several blood-red lines on the back of my hand that DEFINITELY weren't there before. They don't hurt, so I don't think I split a vein, but it's really disturbing.

Agreed on that front. Your GCSE choice will only come into play on the very lowest end of the higher education spectrum - it's your A level choice that will inhibit what you can do at university.

If I may be so bold, may I make a suggestion? Don't be set on game design. It's what every nerdy teenager wants to do (and not to mention it's so very clichéd), and so few make it that it's hardly worth it. Find out what subjects you enjoy (base it on your GCSE and Year 12 experience, as it's vastly different to Key Stage 3) and what subjects you're good at and go along those lines. Personally, I'm going to university to study Mathematics because a) I enjoy it and b) I'm jolly good at it. There are a number of different subjects that you've probably never even thought were taught that you may wish to move in to, and it may be that you have a knack for one or more in particular. :) Keep your options open, and make the difficult choices in two years' time when you're choosing your A level subjects. Good luck.

Misheard Whisper February 27th, 2010 5:26 AM

I'm taking IGCSE right now (I think it's the same as GCSE, except the I means International because I'm in NZ), and it's true that it doesn't make much difference. I would have liked to take History, but there wasn't enough interest to make a full class, so it was dropped. Now I'm just taking English and Maths, so I won't have the three subjects necessary for University Entrance. I'll just have to take the easy option and get in via NCEA like everyone else. D:

Anyway, my problem? I'm not liking school at the moment. I started the term raring to go, but between the aforementioned History class cancellation, Swimming Sports last week and Athletics Day the week before, I'm already feeling like it'll be no fun. Even Drama (my once-favourite subject) is now horrible. I hate working in groups, but I can bear it unless its a group formed from my Drama class, who are the biggest bunch of idiots in my year. Perhaps five of us (being generous here) are serious about Drama, and the only one I really can get along with isn't in my group. So yeah, Drama sucks. I just end up sitting in the back and protesting at being forced to tell lame, sick jokes or act as a perverted 80-year-old.

And my new Maths teacher sucks.

I still don't know what I want to do when I'm older. This fortnight I'm on Work Experience and about twenty peoiple have asked me what I wanna do. I want to do something in Design definitely, but I'm not sure what.

Anybody have any suggestions of different kinds of jobs in Art or Design? I want something that's well paid but I enjoy it too you know?
I mean I've thought of Interior Design and stuff but it would be hard to get work starting out don't you think?

Help would be much appreciated :)

Zet February 27th, 2010 7:43 AM

What about an art teacher? I think that's a decent paying job, you can do work with arts and crafts now and then.

And don't worry I also don't know what I want to do, but recently I've been thinking about doing something justice related and Klippy has convinced me more to do a course around justice.(he's doing a criminal justice course and says it's great)

There are countless and you don't need to decide right now. I'm at Uni and I havn't even decided! Just take school subjects such as Art & Design (obv.), Product Design, Graphic Communication etc. since you enjoy them. Do your best in those subjects and then think about the courses at Uni you could apply to with those qualifications. Don't get too hung up on specifications.

Seeing as you want career sugestions though here are a few:

Advertising (very well paid)Animator
Architect (very well paid) Architectural Technologist
Art Therapist
Artist
Arts Exhibition Organiser
Cabinet Maker
Cartoonist
Community Arts Worker
Computer Games Designer
Costume Designer
Craft Designer or Worker
Director - Film And TV
Display Designer or Window Dresser
Exhibition Designer
Fashion Designer
Film or Videotape Editor
Filmographer (very well paid - especially wedding videos! A Friend of mine does this)
Florist
Furniture Designer
Graphic Designer
Illustrator
Image Consultant
Industrial and Product Designer
Interior Designer
Landscape Architect
Landscape Designer
Make-up Artist
Model Maker
Multimedia Specialist
Photographer (very well paid)
Picture Framer
Playworker or Play Assistant
Sculptor
Set Designer
Signwriter
Special Effects Technician
Stage Manager
Teacher - Secondary School - Art and Design
Teacher - Secondary School - Technological Education
Technical Illustrator
Textile Designer
Wardrobe Assistant - Film or TV or Theatre
Web Designer (very well paid)

Those are actually just a few. There are limitless artistic careers. The world is your oyster! Have fun!

@ Zet Yes I had thought about that but I don't know if I'd have the patience or temperment for teaching. It was something I haden't ruled out though.

@ Kura the big studios videos wouldnt play but I like the look of the other website thank you :)

@ The Cynic. Thanks for the list :P I could probsably get more info on all those on the UKAS website and where they hold courses and things.

Also I am doing Art and Design for my Leaving Certificate but Communication Graphics is limited to people who did Technical Graphics for their Junior Cert. for some reason :(

I just got back from Work Experience this week myself! Yeah, it's annoying the subjects are limited on whether you did the subject for the JC or not, I think it's the same for the Sciences and Business subjects too. I think it's about the course continuing or something...

My advice would be to pick something really out-there for Work Experience (something that you don't know loads about). Don't pick something boring like some people I know who picked the local shop. I presume this is for LCVP, and if it is, then at least you'll definitely be able to write loads on that report thingamajig back. So even if you don't end up doing that career, just don't waste this chance!

Nail polish crisis!

Ohmigod!!!! I am so stupid! Girls being girls, I accidentally spilled dark purple nail polish on my light tan carpet in my bedroom. I have absolutely no idea on how to get it out! I tried nail polish remover, but that hardly did anything.=(

Any suggestions? Please?! It's still a little wet, just in case you need to know...

Kura March 6th, 2010 7:27 PM

Soak it in a little mini basin of rubbing alcohol.. leave it for a few hours in it. Then put it in the regular wash and it should probably fix up just fine.

Edit: If it's carpet flooring, I dunno.. maybe try soaking rubbing alcohol on it and then steam the carpet?

Jolene March 6th, 2010 7:37 PM

I dunno. I guess you could try and stain the rest of the carpet? Is it a nice color?

But seriously, Google says nail polish remover should work. Try it again.

I just don't get why you didn't refuse and tell them to put him in a daycare for a day or hire a sitter. Do they have money problems?

Before you say this is perverted or inappropriate for this site - this is a serious problem and I need somebody to try and fix it for me. [By the way, me and "John" are 13 years old.]

Me and my best friend of 6 years [who happens to be a boy] were having a sleepover. Late at night me and my best friend [we will call him John] were talking about people. Than he spurted a question - "I wonder what sex feels like?"

John looked at me and I looked at him. There have been some romantic times but never that serious. So then he... kinda rolled over and was laying next to me.

Then after 5 minutes of that we both broke out and started making out and grabbing eachother and touching eachother and ourselves and "doing it."

Then after about 20 minutes of that we calmed down and I went to sleep. And I have already gone through puberty and I could tell he had too. And I forgot about condoms.

So for the past few days I feel like I've been gaining weight. I think I might be pregnant. Also, I can not tell my parents or else they seriously might get mad at me!

Please help me. This is a serious problem and I don't want anything bad to happen.

This better not be a troll.

Okay, the truth is, unless you're lucky (or you didn't actually have sex, by which I mean exchanging body fluids), the bad has already happened and you have to deal with the consequences now.

Most girls don't even suspect they're pregnant until after they miss a period. Thinking you're pregnant because you gained, or think you gained some weight isn't the best diagnosis. You won't gain weight after only a few days, if it has only been a few days. You weren't clear on that. If it has only been a matter of days then that's much too soon to know for certain. But that's beside the point.

Your parents getting mad is not something you should worry about right now. You should probably take a pregnancy test and do some soul searching so you can decide what you'll do if you do end up being pregnant. If you are then whatever you decide to do you'll almost certainly need to tell your parents. If you don't want to keep it you'll potentially need their consent and if you do want to keep it you'll definitely need their support.

~Hot n' Cold~ March 11th, 2010 6:05 PM

Turned out I was gaining stress weight, I went to the doctor and told my parents. They were pissed, but it worked out.

Anyway, I have another problem. I'm just a list of large issues.

Well, ya see there's this guy I really like, we have been friends for 1 year, and we are really good friends. We hang out a lot and I think he might like me. I don't know if I should ask him out or wait and see if he asks me??

Zet March 11th, 2010 6:45 PM

I think you should wait until he asks you out.

Shiny March 14th, 2010 11:53 PM

In my opinion, don't start dating until you're fifteen. Thirteen just seems abit young to be sorry.

XxAzaliaxX March 15th, 2010 12:15 AM

I'm really scared of my house being:

--raided by the police

because my grandfather is a drug addict and the cops have been eying our house a lot. You lose that sense of security when your house is raided.

--broken into

the same reason as above, since my grandfather's a drug addict, he's also bringing his 'friends' over. They've been coming in the house and giving me looks, [AGELIMIT]I swear to God that if they try anything they hoped they had been castrated. [/AGELIMIT]

If I could move out I would, but I don't have a job, nor do I have the will to do so. My parents are trying their best to try to get him to move out.

Uggh... Normal people would be worrying about graduation, work, and friends. I'm on edge everyday, and I have to keep my door lock, so my cats end up pooping in my room

*sighs*

That's my problem xD It's good to get it off my chest.

Zet March 15th, 2010 12:30 AM

Why not send him to rehab?

Jolene March 15th, 2010 9:39 AM

I think that my brother's friend is trying to kidnap me. He keeps giving me these weird looks. And also, last week I was walking home from school and it was raining, and he pulled up beside me in his car and he was like, "Oh hey. Want me to give you a lift?" He was acting as though he just happened to be in the area when he saw me, but I think that he planned to meet me there. I think he had been waiting outside my school all day to get his greasy paws on me. I did not get in the car, of course.

I told my brother that his friend wants to kidnap me, but he thought I was being silly. What should I do?

Graceful March 15th, 2010 10:23 AM

I'm Being Pressurised Recently By Both Family And Friends. I Feel As If I Can't Open Up To Them, I Feel The only Way i Can Open Up As If it's in writing. And Recently My Friends Haven't Been Listening To Me. And I Can't Find A Way Of Talking To My Best Friend Alone Without Her Boyfriend Tagging Along, Making A Joke At Everything I Say. Even The Way I Speak. I Wouldn't Like To Talk To My Parents Because I Know They Wont Do anything to help me. I Need Someone Who Can Give Me A Push In The Right Direction. Someone Who Can Take Me Seriously And Accept Me For Who I Am. I Need A Friend Next To Me, But as I Say, I'm Not confident enough To Tell Anyone.
Advice Please? (And Since The Suicide Of My Uncle Andy, Life Hasn't Been How It Was Before. I Really Would Like Some Help Of Some Kind, To Help Me Feel Better About Myself And Be Happy About Life)
