[HotW #97] Pokémon Yonder! Version.

No stealing of the CSS design. That means no looking at it and then tweaking it slightly/learning from it, etc. I spent a while designing this thread and that does not entitle you to take the design. Don't even ask, because the answer is no. If you want to make your own CSS thread/signature design, then look at THIS thread - it has all the info that you need.

Hack Name: Pokémon Yonder! Version
Hack Base: Pokémon FireRed Version (U) [BPRE]
Language: English (SA)
Author: Giga Universe

Story:
Gain some insight into Pokémon Yonder! Version...

You are an ordinary boy/girl of 15, living the ordinary life, in a large city. One day, while exploring a strange clearing that your friends found, you encounter a Celebi. The Celebi forces you back in time – 600 years back, into a medieval world, where nothing is the same...

That was the short version. If you want a longer novel formatted version, Here it is:

Spoiler:
After waking up, you finish your morning routine and then walk a few houses down to meet your friends. They tell you that they found a strange clearing in the nearby forest. You follow them to this clearing, and they show you into it. Suddenly you hear a strange noise, your friends bolt, telling you to run as well, but some invisible force keeps you rooted in place. Suddenly, a Pokémon appears from under a tree, dashing towards you. It stops in front of you long enough so you can recognise it as a Celebi, before the ground gives way beneath you feet, and you tumble into an abyss. The world passes at a rapid speed before your eyes, and then you black out.

When you come to, you find yourself in front of an old and worn farmstead. Before you can even get to your feet, a middle aged man bolts from out of the house, saying something about explosion, and a man he refers to only as ‘him’, before dragging you inside the house. He then hurriedly whispers to you that you should hide in the wine cellar. Without waiting for an answer, he pushes you down the stairs. Not a moment after you have hidden behind some barrels, you hear a loud an insisting knock on the door of the farmstead. You hear some hushed voices out begin to converse upstairs. You strain to hear what is being said, but you cannot make out more than a few words – none of which make any sense whatsoever. Suddenly a large figure, walks slowly down the stairs. You cannot see the person, but judging from the racket created by his footsteps, he is very heavy. You can hear him walking toward you – very deliberately. You adjust your hiding place as quietly as you can, making a gargantuan effort to hide your breath – which is loud and rattling with fear. Yet the figure just adjusts his course toward you. Suddenly the noises stop. Thinking you are safe, you let loose a sigh of relief. Then, all of a sudden, a massive hand reaches toward you. You flinch, but the grip is surprisingly gentle. The figure drags you to your feet and leads you up the stairs. Having nowhere to run – you blindly follow.

Having hidden down in the dark wine cellar, your eyes have trouble adjusting to the new light. Thus you still cannot see the massive man who dragged you out. The man speaks - his voice rough and gravely, yet strangely comforting. He says something that sounds like “I’ll take the child with me”. The man who hid you starts to mumble incoherently. The first man interrupts, now having a hint of anger in his voice, “Never mind that! We cannot be sure about that yet,” You turn around to face him, your eyes having adjusting to the new light now. The man is nothing short of a giant – towering over you, powerfully built and muscular, and having the width of three average men and clad in large amounts of plate armour. He looks down at you and speaks directly to you. “My name is Obsidian, and I am a knight,”

Not bad, I am surprised no one has commented. you spent some time with the graphics so far and it looks great! Best of luck

Giga Universe January 3rd, 2010 10:37 AM

Thanks, for the comment. What do you think of the story so far?

onyx79 January 3rd, 2010 10:40 AM

good graphics how do you know the pallettes of a tile before inserting it?

Reminds me of my old hack underground :3, (Celebi sends you back).

It's really great so far. Exploring ancient Pokemon will be a great new adventure. I expect you will find your way back somehow? Or become the ultra badass living with the Pokemon (sweet!). I can imagine tombs and such or ancient humans like Egyptians and such! Can't wait :3

Ninetales433 January 3rd, 2010 10:53 AM

Looks awesome!I like the storyline and the features.

snap12 January 3rd, 2010 10:55 AM

I love the story line man, and some of the features you listed (armour , day and night, fuedal system) all seem like they will make this a great hack. Just be careful though that implementing these features does not subtract from other more important things like good maps and good scripts. Don't bite off more than you can chew, and good luck my friend!

psychicboy January 3rd, 2010 11:05 AM

Hey.. I like your storyline, but wheb it comes to all those features.. I think your being a bit too ambitious unless you can ASM hack or use RMXP. I am willing to script for you though. (If you let me.)

Thanks. Its rather easy. I recolour the tiles so they are in the colours of the old sprites and then recolour the palettes with hex. Sometimes I use APE, but I like hex - it keeps me sharp.

I was actually going for the medieval approach - knights in shining armour, kings and queens, peasants and all that - but I could incorporate that. I'm not sure about going back - I might do something along the lines of Celebi takes you back and forth between the two ages, and what you do in the past (medieval age) affects your age. Not sure about that though.

Oh, that won't be much of a problem - what I mean by the features not being implemented is that I haven't gotten far enough with mapping and others scripts to include them in. I have made them already and they are just sitting on my hardrive - waiting to be inserted. =)

You can script if you can help me find a way to fix up the bugs in my Pokémon Follow-me script (check my siggy). I have solutions, yet they will take up too much space in a rom.

PS. Can anybody make some more support banners please? My photoshop crashed. I also would love it if someone could make me an official looking version title (saying Yonder! Version), that I can insert.

Nice hack!
I think I will make a fanbar of it then I will send you it right away.

Thanks very much! I know you are kinda limited, with the only foreground images being only Celebi and the Nidorans. I just need to get round to drawing the hero and main characters, how I want them to look isn't exactly clear yet...

Hmmm not a bad hack, but I dont like the pallete combos, The mountains pal goes HORRIBLY with the rest of them, but the rest of there pals need changing, not the mountain, it is fine, but the others are too dark and greyish, like swampy land... unrealistic.

And also the house lacks shading, use some better house tiles.

Oh wow, that changes things. Thats great that you have everything done, thats a huge advantage. Good luck man, it looks like this could be a really special hack :)

agel January 3rd, 2010 4:20 PM

This game sounds really good. Very creative.Definitely a hack to keep an eye on, rather than the usual boring johto/kanto/wherever replays that require zero skill to make. I read the description and it reminds me of toxicpurple in that you have great ideas and have planned out the hack outline nicely, everything rolls together... Plus its got fresh ideas. Anyways enough of my little rant, good luck on it and dont give up, i see something special here, toxicpurple is the best hack with a patch out and now finally there might be a hack that can compete!

edit: and dont pay too much attention to the people who tell you your artwork isnt so good. Its fine, but that doesnt matter anyways cuz the meat and potatoes of the hack is the storyline and the gameplay. The graphics are just gravy. (just make sure the artwork isnt horrendous, and youll be just fine ;))

I think the palette ugliness is just the fact that the cloudy weather is enabled. I need to find a palette that goes well with that weather. I'll take your advice and change it, but It's not a top priority.

I am going to stick to this. Thanks for the constructive long comment (no really). People have said my art is horrendous o.O? Where? I thought is was just the palette... Anyway, the only art I can do is pixel over - so the art will look nice as I will draw a picture on paper, scan it and then pixel over. XD

-DefaulT January 4th, 2010 2:24 AM

looks amazing, love the title screen, simply done, and clean, good job :D

qwertyuiop1234567890 January 4th, 2010 7:29 AM

This sounds like a awesome hack, going back in time isn't a new idea, but your storyline and features seem unique. I'd like to see this finished someday, it sounds like it would be fun to play.

Master Terrador January 5th, 2010 6:37 AM

Quite the screenshots you have there, bud. Thread layout is also nice, as are tiles and palletes. Your mapping seems to be good from what I've seen so far, and I must say that boot screen is really creative! It shows promise, but do you have persistance to finish, I hope so. ;)

amoliski January 6th, 2010 1:26 PM

First, I don't know what Paranoid is thinking, I think the palette works perfectly for what you are doing, a DARK ages time period, and a dream. I change of palette would work perfectly to distinguish between the brighter present and the darker middle ages.
I am going back to college on the 10th, which means I will have a ton of free time. I would love to join your team, the caveat is that I only know a limited amount of XSE. The only reason is that I lack imagination, not skill - I figure I can pick up on the language way more quickly with proper motivation :) At the very least, I could help with boring dialog and XSE related event scripting.
When I first read about this, I figured it was one of those over-ambitious hacks that never got anywhere, but it is AWESOME that you already have the features figured out!
Either way, good luck with your hack, I really hope you can finish it!

558122_DG January 6th, 2010 5:27 PM

I think the follow script works fine :? what wrong with it?

874521 January 7th, 2010 4:35 AM

Nice hack, I really adore the background of your titlescreen, it's really nice and cool. The palette of the tiles seem to fit the storyline of your hack. It's like the 4th movie, about time traveling with Celebi. Is there a time that the hero will be back to the present time?

Satoshi Ookami January 7th, 2010 6:18 AM

Really nice hack you have here.
Your boot and title screens are simply amazing.
CSS layout is nice also.
And the feature part... marvelous! All things you mentioned are totally something new.
Keep up the good work ;)
I'll be keeping eye on this one :)

Giga Universe January 7th, 2010 8:12 AM

Sorry for the late update, I went on holiday and was without internet for 3 days.

I know going back isn't new, but I'm pretty sure that Medieval hacks have never been done before. Couldn't think of a new way to take you back that didn't sound like a dream (Because you not gonna wake up to a dream. Haha.) and now its stuck.

Thank you very much XD. First layout comment if I'm not mistaken. I'm still altering the layout, and adding a news section, so more comments on layout will be appreciated. I'm going to add more screenies, once I've mapped the first scene of the past.

Thanks, I will try to incorporate a palette change, though I still think the mountain needs to be several shades lighter. Second opinion on that? PM me contact details (MSN, Skype, etc) I would love some help!

No, sadly, there are many bugs, such as no Start = Menu, Select = Registered item functionality, Walk through walls, buggy tile animations, and having to ability to talk/interact with warps, people, signs or other such events. Check my signature for a full list of bugs (follow the link and read the post)

Thank you. I wouldn't know, since I haven't watched the Anime in years. The hero won't be able to go back to his/her time until MUCH later, like the climax of the hack. The entire idea is that you get thrust back in time very early on, and the ENTIRE game is located in the past. I still haven't got far enough in the solid story development to decide though.
