I am considered 'popular' but that's because of where I live and what I'm wearing. I hang out with the 'loser crowd' and a lot of the snobs and kids on sports teams look down on that and make fun of me because of it. I've also noticed that one of my teachers is biased twards the kids on sports teams

As for the popular crowd, its weird because I was just thinking about this today in English class. I was sitting there (my desk is smack dab in the epicenter of the classroom) while we were watching a movie. I shouldn't say watching, however. My English class is full of popular kids. There are only a hand few of people who are considered to be unpopular towards, to my speculation, the popular kids of my graduating class. The more unpopular kids are spread out across the room, and the mass of popular kids are grouped in between them. There are only about four or five people in my class who aren't considered to be one of their clique since most of the popular kids in my graduating class communicate with each other throw a massive clique. I'd say about 1/2 of the kids in my class are involved in this clique. And yes, I would call it a clique because they reject by the mass (I've never tried to get in it, nor have I ever cared). Anyway, I was thinking about it during the movie. All of the kids were talking, especially when my English teacher had something to say, and I just thought to myself "My ****ing God, these kids are terrible. Just let the man speak, its not that hard. I'm sure out of all your years being here you'd have learned that listening is important, especially when its in school. I know its difficult for you, but just shut your damn mouths and listen to the man." Shame about it is is that my English teacher compliments us on being such a good class as a whole. It makes me lol and then I'm sitting there, the only one laughing... even if its just softly. Then came the thought "Ten years from now, I'll be the one signing your minimum wage paychecks." -- That's my overview opinion of those involved in the popular crowed (which are different from the prep crowd at my school because in my opinion everyone is a prep in their own way, regardless of how they carry their selves. Preps are just typically, to me, people who prefer to dress in not necessarily more expensive clothing, but nicer clothing when in public. I know as soon as I get home, I change into more comfortable clothing (not to say that clothes from Abercrombie & Fitch aren't comfortable, however) and sit around looking a little less fabulous than I did when I was at school. |
When I was in high school (2004-2008), I never really talked to the popular kids. Although I wasn't anti-social I only had a few friends who were trustworthy and shared similar interests. I began socializing with the popular kids when I was a senior. Just by virtue of being a senior you were more popular than most kids unless you were a complete geek (by popular standards) though not necessarily in the popular crowd. Around half of the popular kids were douches and the other half were quite friendly though we never became good friends. In my senior year a group of freshman skater kids followed me because hanging with a senior looked cool I guess.
Most of the popular kids (now young adults) did not go to college or went to a community college at best. A small handful did got to a university. |

There was a girl in my school who was a horrid bully. A year or two after she left, we spoke on MSN, where she said that at her new school she was in the 'popular group' so she was better than me. She made such a fuss over it! I just found her obsession with popularity rather pathetic.
School is primarily for learning. Further down the senior school, and perhaps towards the end of the junior, popularity mattered to me a little. Not that much though; I was content to be friends with my friends and try to work hard. Now however... Well, I wouldn't say that every girl in the year is friends with everyone else, but we keep ourselves to ourselves. Of course, if you have over a hundred teenage girls gathering in one place five days a week, there's going to be animosity for various reasons, but we're all generally friendly to each other. Well, that's how it seems to me. There doesn't seem to be a 'popular group' at the moment. We're all in our own friendship groups. I mean, there's a group of girls in my class who are pretty popular, but not in the stereotypical mean girls way. They're popular because they're friendly and cool. They don't lord it over the others, and they're not really considered 'the popular group', but people seem to like them. There isn't a queue of girls lined up desperate to join the group or anything like that. Everyone seems pretty content where they are in terms of popularity. Quite frankly, with such major exams coming up, we've all got bigger things to think about than our popularity. Popularity doesn't matter to me; I've got my small group of close friends and I'm friendly with others in my class and year. I think that's pretty much the attitude of most of the girls in my year. I wonder whether going to an single sex school makes a difference. I've been going to my girls' school since I was four, so I don't know how different it would be if we had boys too. It's an interesting question... Of course, it could be the fact that my school puts a lot of emphasis on work and results. We're all more focused on work than we otherwise might be. The school's quite proud of the intelligence of the students, and expects us to keep up the tradition, so we're under a lot of pressure to work hard rather than fuss about incidental things like popularity. xX |
Popularity is overrated.
All it means is that you have a larger amount of people to backstab you. I'd rather stick to just a few friends. Even though it's still inevitable to get backstabbed, it's better to only have it happen from a few. |
I hate the whole popularity thing >_< especially when your at the academy cause all the 'popular kids' are all popular cause they annoy teachers. how sad =( plus I hate them all
|
I would hate being popular. Not all popular people are bad, but many can be.
|
My school doesn't have a problem with "popularity"...or at least to the naked eye. I just don't worry too much about what other people have to say about me if I don't know them well, so I haven't had many problems in high school in this regard. I'm referring to the popular people in the sense that others in this thread are speaking of (as in being the self-loving "popular" and not the popular as in "well liked"). I'm far from popular myself in either definitions, but I don't gripe about them much in return either, since it's a waste of emotional energy.
|
During my time here at my high school I haven't seen any popular group. It looks like my school just has a lot of groups that stay in certain areas, but none of them stand out as the popular group.
That said, I'm in a lot of groups, but I won't consider myself popular; I just can't stand being in just one group. Now back when I was in Middle School, you could tell who were popular and who were not. >_> |
At my old school, which I attended from sixth till mid-ninth grade, there was a definite barrier to popularity, but not in the high school though... you could have been a total nerd and gotten away with taking THE girl to prom. Unfortunately, my middle school generation missed that, and decided to pretty much relentlessly attack those who weren't white, not into hip-hop (which had finally become popular), or played some videogame that wasn't GTA or Madden.
You could pretty much say it was Preps against nerds/rockers/minorities/skaters/punks/etc. I had my revenge though. When I roadied for a friends band that did a gig at their school four months ago, we managed to get with almost every girl in my grade and scare the crap out of the guys. At the high school I've attended since, there are a whole bunch of cliques, and people like me who are 'popular' because we get along pretty well with everyone or were just athletic, smart, had cool older friends, or hung out with scary people. The only people who are any popular are the ones who do the school announcements/ 'comedy' broadcast. |
At my school all the popular kids are just wannabes >_>
|
Popular is just another word no one knows the meaning of. What makes you popular? Being liked by a decent amount of people? Well then, by those standards, most everyone is popular. Or maybe it is a sport, still, a lot of people would be "popular." Or maybe it is being gorgeous and having good looks, and lots of money. I'd still have to disagree, I know lots of people who aren't good looking, and yet, they are popular. Basically, either everyone is popular, or no one is.
And, even then, depending on what group you ask, different people are popular. |
My old school before I moved had their popular clique, and it did consist of the usual football jockeys, cheerleaders, and higher class kids. They did have their preppy behaviors or attitude in which they think to be better or more higher than you. I would have to admit it did get annoying to how they may have thought, but then again it wasn't the thing to get the best of me. It's high school and the different cliques, especially the popular groups, are always a factor while going to school.
I was a well known student at school. Mostly for my high grades and participating in a few clubs such as Drama. Though, going to a small school where almost everyone knows everyone, I never considered myself to be popular. Now, I wear brand named clothes such as Aéropostale and I even would admit to having a bit of a preppy behavior sometimes, but I never think I would be higher than someone in the way the popular kids at my old high school would think. Then again, this is my senior year and when I really put this idea into thought, after all of this popularity isn't something that will matter much. Personality is what will be looked at foremost and while I took the time with my studies I can say, "Hey, at least I may not have been high and looked upon like others in high school, but I'll be off with a strong career now." Really, I'm just who I am and I don't want to pretend to be something I am not. Popularity may be great for those at the time, but after awhile they head into reality and it wouldn't matter too much then. |
ogod seriously. I hate those who label others and consider themselves too good for others. I mean what's the point of making yourself look good just because you're rich or beautiful? D:
This coming from a person whose been considered a nobody her whole life. >:| |
I guess in high school (my high school) each group had their own popular people. I guess in my group or rather in some of them i was quiet up there in the ranks but i never really made much of it. Though i did roam a lot. I guess playing a guitar added to my popularity..and it having a big nirvana sticker on it made it like a huge + for me hahaha. Even though it wasn't really about that we all were who we were and didn't really see it as popular though there were those who went out there to always be in everything. I guess you called those the popular kids.
|
I'm not popular. Nor will I ever be. The popular kids are the ones who always wear the expensive clothing brands and they think they are better than everyone else.
|
uggg popular kids in my school are jerks and brats. i dont like to be a stereo-type, but i do admit that i am because i think when you are popular you automatically become a jerk. i dont care if im being prejudice, but thats the way it is in my school. i get in fights with them all the time. although i am still in middle school, i can't wait to get my revenge on those jerks for wut theyve done to me and my friends. im not considered popular or a nerd, but i could care less what people think of you as. they think that they are all that and that they are better than every1 else, but they aren't. in my school, there are lunch tables for each "clique", which is absurd. everything in my school is absurd.
|
I'm not popular, and I don't want to be one.Turning into one actually makes people hate you more and more.
|
There are 2 kinds of "popular" kids in my opinion. The first one is the "smart" kid or the nerd, popular because people often would come to them and ask their advice or opinion on things. The second one is the well known type, the bully. They're only popular because they're tough and highly muscular, which most people feared and they have no choice but to "ally" with them. They think they rule the whole classroom, but that's only an illusion. All will be gone when they come to realization.
I don't mind the above mentioned first ones, but I can hardly stand bullies. |
The popular girls at my school were all platinum blondes who slathered their faces in make-up and failed every class except Textiles.
The popular boys at my school were all football jocks who told racist jokes and went out on drunken binges every single day of the week. Needless to say, I hung out with all the cool geeky kids instead. Popularity is so overrated, in my experience. :3 |
Im really proud to be one of the popular kids at my high school. I know that sounds pretentious and stuck up, but I don't feel like it is. My group of friends does the typical partying on the weekends and stuff, but we are always inviting other kids that we don't hang out with that often. We are pretty accepting of the random kids in our school and get along with most people.
Im not going to lie though, we can be pretty big bullies when it comes to douche bags who think they are the greatest thing in the world. Those stereotypical douchey kids that actually beat up the smart kids? Yeah, we hate them and don't deal with them, we actually defend the kids that would be considered "nerds" (thats a horrible word though). I think its because I go to private school, and all of the popular kids are reallllyy smart and are going Ivy League (not me tho haha). The most important thing is, the popular kids at my school are the ones that play pokemon. I'm not even kidding. Its so hilarious walking through the halls of my school to see kids trading and battling. Most of them pretend like they are playing jokingly just to fit in, but we all love it :) |
It's funny how most of you say that jocks are dumb when they need to get good grades to be in a sports team. The preps at my school are really smart, to a point.
I don't like popularity. When one calls you popular, you might overreact or blow it out of proportion. When someone calls you unpopular, that would just put you down.. |
