Heya, and welcome to PC, hope you enjoy it here. =]

As for EVs and IVs, both of them raises the stats of the Pokémon, but they're not visible. To get EVs you must fight a Pokémon to earn one (or two depends on the Pokémon) EV of one of the stats, once you get 4 EVs of a certain stat it will raise by one. Ex. Tentacruel provides 2 Sp.Def EVs, so if you fought 2 Tentacruel, you'll gain 4 Sp.Def EVs, and your Sp.Def of the Pokémon you used against them is raised by one.

IVs are random, so you won't know whats your Pokémon's IVs. If you do want to know, use the IV Calculator.

Hi, and welcome to PC, i hope you'll enjoy your stay :)

Whaaaa you've never beaten one?! That'll have to change.
Hello also :]

P.S. If you just got plat, don't worry about EV's and IV's so much. Ev's you can do but is not so simple for the play through and IV generally takes a ton of breeding.

If you want a friend/help/whaaatever lemme know.
We can be friends :]

Looks like you've got a good many candidates to assist you with understanding the more complex parts of training a well-rounded team. Can't say we're not a helpful community now, am I right? ;D

I'm sure sticking around here will do much more than rekindle your passion for Pokémon, my dear. Just try not to get too addicted now. Haha.

Hope you have some fun with Platinum, and good luck beating a Pokémon game for the first time! \o/
