Introduction


Hello all! This thread is for the hack Pokemon Redemption. I'm josh354 (You can call me Sully.) My co-owner is adamb241. (You have to ask him what he wants to be called.) I came up with this idea some time ago, but I never had much time to work on it until recently. I started scripting and mapping (very, very, poorly), and I liked the outcome enough to get some others to help work on it with me. This is what we have now.

Story




Prelude (Contains Some Spoilers)

60 years ago a scientist lost his wife in a tragic accident. Unwilling to let her go he decided to try and do the unthinkable, bring back the dead. After years of intense study, he finally discovered how he could acomplish his goal. There existed a single Pokemon whose power could be used to restore his lost wife, however, this Pokemon had not been seen in decades and many regarded it simply as myth. In order to capture this creature the scientist gathered an elite team of trainers and named them Team Aevum. Word spread throughout the region of the scientist's goal and the people did not like the idea of tampering with death, but the scientist refused to let the people stop him. What started as a harmless mission soon turned into a war as Team Aevum began to mow down whoever tried to get in their way. One day the champion of the region decided to take action. Instead of facing Team Aevum he devised a way to spoil their plan. He found this legendary pokemon and captured it. Knowing that Team Aevum would come after him next he made the ultimate sacrifice. He left everything behind and made his way to a nearby region. Once there he found a hiding place for the Pokemon and released him, then he settled down in the saftey of a small town. Team Aevum's plot was foiled and so they withdrew from the region and into the shadows, plotting their revenge against the heroic champion.

Present Day

"Breaking news out of the ESTILLE region. Team Aevum has resurfaced with an unknown new scheme! Leading them is the current champion who mysteriously disappeared months ago. His followers each have unusually powerful Pokemon and are making their way through towns kidnapping the strongers trainers. Most gym leaders had time to find a safe place to hide but a couple weren't as fourtunate. As of now there are no further details on what they want or why."

The news reporter broadcasts this to the MAIESTAS region, located across the sea from the ESTILLE region. You are safe in your home, or so you think. One day after running an errand for your grandfather you are attacked by a member of Team Aevum. You are saved by your friend, the local gym leader, and rush home to check on your rival and grandfather. Both are missing. Your friend shows up and tells you that they are headed toward ESTILLE, but you can't go because you don't have a Pokemon for protection. Luckily, your grandfather had picked one out for you, and so you make your way to ESTILLE. Once there you try and find clues on the whereabouts on your grandfather and rival. Your investigation leads you to a gym leader hiding from Team Aevum. You talk to him and agree to fight Team Aevum as you look for your grandfather and rival!

  • Talk to Arnold before facing the 5 trainers in Guardwood Forest. (If you don't you will have to start all over :D)
  • Heal after you beat the 5 trainers in Guardwood Forest.


I'm sure there are more that I'm missing, but these are the major ones. If you find a bug or glitch post it here or send me a PM describing the problem.




Help Needed



There are a few spots that need to be filled, so if you would like to help let me know!

(In order from most needed to least needed)

  • Spriter - This is most needed. We need sprites to go with the new OW's and such.
  • Banner/Userbar Maker - It would be good to have something for ppl to show their support.
  • Beta Tester - Can't play a game full of bugs can we?

Great news! Alpha Version 1.0 is out! Please give me some feedback on it.

Here are some things I will try to add/edit before next release:

I agree with DG, this is better than shiny gold.
But I'm stuck, I've got the password for the cave, "start".
But the guard says "INCORRECT!".
Is it the end of the alpha?

At this point, I don't know if I should spoil that to you or let you find out on your own, but this is NOT the end of alpha. The password's name is "start" for a reason.

Thanks for the compliment, but you have to remember that Shiny Gold is a remake. That makes it hard to compare the two because they are two different types of hacks.

And like NiKa said, that isn't the end of the alpha. Be creative with your thinking and you will figure it out eventually :D.

orly? shiny gold is nothing near the quality of this. Also you can compare it, who gives if its a remake? it's still a PKMN game :)

But on the other hand I played redemtion the entire alpha...and found quite the amount of gliches ^^'
I'll post em on our sercret place k *hint hint nudge nudge, umbreon*
they are all minor script typos, script you forgot to write in stuff :D
Maps were excellent :) but that route where you meet nadia, in my opinion, was way too long thats one huge map u had there ^^'

I'm glad you liked all of the maps, most of them were mapped by me. The Nadia one really isn't that long, but thanks for the comments.

your welcome, And it is very long in game play particularly because sully decided to put in cut trees to block our way making us go the long way :P

Mmmm...the hack are really good,but i dont like the palettes,the maps are great! i like the history...in general is very good looking, although I think you might try changing some pallets.

Hmm.. What in particular don't you like about the pallets? The colors? Glad you like everything else.

Well I believe the pallettes are just fine. If we change the pallette on anything, the tree for example, it wouldn't "go" with the rest of the pallettes. On the other hand I think master of puppets WANTED to make the pallettes abit dark :/

Zein was probably referring to the livingness of the palettes. If you ask me, looking at a screen that is taken out in the open, the only lively thing that I see is the overworlds. The rest seem dead green or dead brown. So, as palettes they're great, but imo don't fit with the overworlds 'n' stuff.

So we have 3 options,
1) Change the pallettes to be more "lively"
2) Change the OW to be less lively
3) which is where you come in and make some :P

Huzzah! I spy a small part of my map :D

I'm not really a fan of the No-Gyms-Until-You've-Finished-The-Game idea unless you've changed it since we last talked about it, but I guess its just me. Also, that kid who says "Are you crazy" in the Screenshots doesn't have blue text like all of the other manly men in the game :S

Anyways, I wish you luck with this, and I am always standing by ready to help, if needed.

Nice eyes in spying your map. Yeah, I understand not liking that certain part. Trust me though, just because there aren't "gym battles" doesn't mean there won't be plenty of tough challenges to overcome on your way through the story. Thanks for the feedback :D

your hack is great but if you changed all tiles you could also change the tiles of inside or at least change the colours in the same style as outside......

mk, lets get a couple of things straight, first off, the indoor tiles are bound to change, so don't worry bout those. On the other hand the outdoor tiles are not gonna change from what I can tell, so deal with it...

That is thanks to JPAN, and not everyone uses 'enter', so people will have to figure it out :D.

Thanks for the comment! Right now the palettes are getting mixed reviews, (like everything usually does lol) but if we decide to keep them the same I'll see what I can do about fixing the indoor tiles.

Ok so I'm playing the Alpha, and these are the bugs so far that I have found(btw I'm not done with the Alpha yet)

1)Step outside of your hous, take 4 steps down, 2 steps to the left, 1 step down and you will see your reflection on the flower(like if that was water, now this might be an error, from when you inseret the tiles or something)

2)In Treasure Beach, the sign next to the rock, the words are all messed up.

3)When you go to run an errand for your gramps, if you talk to the "Messanger Guy", but you talk to him by the side, he wil turn, but it will look weird(its like he turns, but at the same time its like from the neck down the body is stil facing forward)

4)The second sign in route 201 says "Make sure to stop at a Pokecenter if you parties health is getting low." I it should be "if your parties", not "if you parties". (for got the "r")

5)In Pechip town, the sign infron of the pokecenter and pokemart says "Pokemon can eat berries to gain heath and other attributes during a battle. You spelled "heath" instead of "health".(forgot the "l")

6) When the grunt comes to take the player, Arnold says "recking havoc", it should be "reeking havoc". (you forgot the other "e", and it has no "c")

7)[Same scene as 6] The grunt says "This is none of your buisness", change "buisness" to "business".

8)In your house you have a walking permision error, the trainer should be able to take one more step towards the TV and the shelf and the cabbinat, but he cant.

9)The Guard that tells you to go tell his son somethings, he says something like "I have to stay longer that I thought", is should be "than" on "that".

Oh yeah, I downloaded the Alpha a week or so, but haven't got around to finishing it. From what I played of it so far, I really liked it. I did notice, though, in your scripts that you use "\l" in a lot of your text breaks, and there's nothing wrong with it, but maybe you could use "\p" when they start a new sentence? It makes the person's talking sort of just run on. I use "\l" if their speech goes past the use of "\n".

And also, how did you guys find out how to give the PokeRus? I decompiled the script and just saw the use of a few Special commands, but still...I haven't seen PokeRus introduced in ANYONE else's hack before!

Thanks, I will try to start doing that from now on. That is a special from JPAN's patch. I have already used a few of his features in the alpha and I love it :D.

Ummm, the trees are perfectly fine, you are complaining about to pallettes. which in all due respect don't need to be changed. They are from a rom base and fideling with them may end up in other pallettes being messed up (unless you know what you are doing).I hate it when ppl read other ppl's comments and say the exact same thing, it's really pointless...WE KNOW ALREADY

Course I have very little say in this, but sully will figure some kind of solution, personally I wouldn't care.

Ok and now for the announcement. Personally, I like the palettes the way that they are now. Unless everyone starts to complain about them, the chances of them changing are slim. There may be a few edits here or there but nothing drastic. Thanks for reading, please give me some feedback :D.

Eh, it's not major, so it's not really that big of a deal. But since there's going to be a couple Leaders scattered around, what do you get for winning against them?

but it's actually impacts the game more than regular gyms, every gym battle furthers the story line revealing more and more...I think i've said too much but hopefully that satisfies your curiosity more :)

Egh, this isn't that good, i wouldn't compare it to other hacks like people are doing. You're grammar is poor and there are descrepancies in your scripts such as no sound when there's an exclamation point and alot of text errors. Also, all of your interior tile sets are messed up. So i give this a 5/10 if i were to rate it, but I like your maps ^^

Yes, there were many text errors, but I believe we have corrected most of the mistakes. I will try and upload a fixed alpha sometime soon. What exactly is wrong with the interior tilesets? I don't see anything wrong with them except that their palette doesn't match the exterior. Could you please tell me whats wrong? Oh, wow, thanks for pointing out my oxy-moronic statement. I hate it when you fail at pointing out a fail xD

Excuse my statement about the interior tilesets, I had a faulty rom that I patched it with, and hence the messed up interior tilesets.

And to help you out with the 'ding' (which is sound 0x15) noise, take a tip from me, a expert from my peers evaluation. To get the closest and most accurate anatomy of nintendo movement scripting, set it up like this:

If just a using #raw 0x62 (exclamtion point), i.e.:

#org @move
#raw 0x62
#raw 0xFE

then set up the whole thing like this:

...
sound 0x15
applymovement 0x__ @move
waitmovement 0x0
pause 0x32

if there is movement before, such as this:

#org @move
#raw 0x10
#raw 0x10
#raw 0x62
#raw 0xFE

then set it up like this

...
applymovement 0x__ @move
waitmovement 0x0
sound 0x15
pause 0x32

First, I'll point out some of the bad things.

There are some grammatical and spelling errors which really bugged me.

In addition to that, the text boxes often run too long during some dialogue bits. The first scene on the beach with your grandpa talking takes too long, and it feels too much like forced exposition. Remember that more isn't always better. A few of the lines seem rather stilted.

Additionally, end text boxes and start new ones more often. At the very least, you should do this every time the character responds to something the Hero has 'said. Do that and a lot of the dialogue would flow better in my mind, and not feel like it was running on too much.

I do like the premise, and I give you props for the interesting way the game starts out. I like how the beginning is a bit more slow paced and it takes longer to get your first Pokemon. It gives more time to just take things and it sets it apart somewhat.

Well maybe we can show a picture but the actual sprite won't be inserted until the end. That is one of the last things we plan to do in this release. We have inserted some D/P pokemon and are currently working on the next major scriptitng event. Pictures will be up in with in the next few days.

well, i find it great!

its the first time that we see the enemies who are not against the main player, the boss just gives the pass as if you where on their side, it's the first time i see this^^

Looks good, just two quick grammar/spelling notes (I feel like a broken record; just blame it on me majoring in English :p). "Yes sir" is two words, not one, and in the fourth from last screen shot you're missing the word "he". (It says "If is" where I assume you meant to say "If he is". Also, in that same screen shot, there should be a comma between pass and why.

Nitpicking aside, I like the looks of what you're showing there. I think it's interesting how the boss just goes and gives you a pass. That's definitely different.

Thanks for pointing those out KTM. I don't think it's nitpicking at all. I appreciate it when people take the time and tell me what I need to fix. And the boss doesn't have a reason not to give you the pass.....yet. ;)

@ agel: If you haven't made it to Estille then you don't have the Pokedex for it to evolve. After you arrive at Estille you should get the Pokedex. Then, if I'm not mistaken, after gaining a level Mareep will should evolve.

@ Chimchar 9: Done and done :D. There is a new mountain tile, and there should be fixed palettes with next release.

@ Mr. Marine: Thanks! We currently have 1 new OW inserted, and there are 2 ready to be inserted. My next update will probably contain pics of the new OW's in action :D

Screen shots look great, the tiles are fine. I personally like the Team Aevum OW (but I don't like the actual team name :/)

One thing that does need changing is the path. It looks slightly awkward, love the dark vibe feeling I get from looking at the tiles though.
