BUT MOM...why would any of my friends jump off a bridge?

I don't know if this is just my parents that say this.

Have you ever asked your mom/dad to do something your friends are doing? And they replied "If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you jump?"

Have you ever wondered WHY would your friends jump off a bridge? Or something along the lines of that.

BHwolfgang February 6th, 2010 12:41 PM

YOU GOT THIS OFF FACEBOOK! D:

My mom said that once, and I asked if her friends would jump off a bridge, would she do the same? She walked away. :)

Why yes, yes I did. :P Is that a problem??

poopnoodle February 6th, 2010 12:47 PM

Yap, my mom used to say that a lot. I'd always respond, "it depends on how high the bridge is off the ground."

And I don't think about my friends literally jumping off bridges, so no, I don't wonder why they would.

Ayselipera February 6th, 2010 1:14 PM

Yeah my dad used to say it here and there.

No I never put much thought into that.

Melody February 6th, 2010 1:22 PM

My dad used to say that, and I'd say something like "No, but you're totally offtopic now." (that always annoys the hell out of adults who love using that saying as a justification for saying no, for whatever other reason)

Parents hate being out-logic-ed. So yeah, try it sometimes, it's hilarious....(but sometimes dangerous, so don't get yourself beaten silly)

インフェルノの津波 February 6th, 2010 2:01 PM

My older sister says that, and here's my comebacks:

Why would he do that?

Depends. Is there money involved?

I'm not that stupid to do that!

...What?

Oh please, don't go off topic again...

That makes no sense whatsoever.

I hate it when people say that...It makes no frickin' sense.

Dukey February 6th, 2010 2:07 PM

Funnily enough we've been jumping off the bridge at the dam recently xD

But yeah, I'd just say no and go do whatever it is we were arguign about.

Caelus February 6th, 2010 2:08 PM

My parents don't say that, but my sister does a lot.
I get what they mean, but that's a dumb thing to say imo. WHY would my friends do that in the first place?

It does get me off guard sometimes, though.

Åzurε February 6th, 2010 2:40 PM

For those who may or may not get it, it's a metaphor for peer pressure.

My parents don't use metaphors, because when they do, I call them on it. >:3
I think the first time I got them on the bridge thing was at age 9.

iLaxbe! February 6th, 2010 2:40 PM

I didn't have friends when I was a little, but my maid told me that once or twice, about my brother.

lol same here, but then they might get mad and say your acting like a smart ass.

Idiot! February 7th, 2010 3:57 AM

"I've done it before. Yet I live to tell the tale."

Which is true, actually. I also happened to be the first among my friends to jump off a bridge.

Well, my parents are all about making me follow my friends. There is something I can't do very well: fit in.

Synaesthesia February 7th, 2010 1:40 PM

My parents have never pulled that line on me because they realize how stupid it is, too, but also because they let me do a lot of stuff lol.

However, teachers have used that line on me, and I've always thought "They obviously wouldnt..." or, yes, "why would they even do that?"

I hate that metaphor.

Anxiety. February 7th, 2010 2:22 PM

No, my friends wouldn't jump off a bridge. They're pretty normal people, to be honest.

And this is my reply to 'Would you jump off a bridge if your friends did it?'

"Yep. But I'd find a bridge that isn't very high of the ground'

See, they saying doesnt say it has to be the same bridge 8D

Alistair February 7th, 2010 2:50 PM

When my parents asked me that, I would always ask back, "The 480 Bridge or the one in the back yard?" That usually got them to shut up. And when I say 480 Bridge, I mean the Valley View Bridge on I-480 in Valley View, Ohio.

TRIFORCE89 February 9th, 2010 7:22 PM

No, they've never said that to me. But, something that basically says "would you do something stupid just because your friends did?" isn't all that outlandish.

Timbjerr February 9th, 2010 8:51 PM

Growing up, my mom was very fond of analogies that dealt with bridges, so of course the bridge-jumping/peer pressure one came up on occasion. XD

...But my personal favorite was when she was motivating me to study hard and be ambitious in life, she would always tell me, "You can choose to be the guy that designs the bridge, the guy that builds the bridge, the guy who sweeps the bridge or the guy that sleeps under the bridge."

digi-kun February 9th, 2010 11:55 PM

This is probably very wrong, but when my friend was a kid, and he was asked "If everyone else jumped off a bridge, would you?", the first thing he responded was "Will I have the fat people to cushion my fall?"

Also, I doubt my friends would jump off a bridge (unless they had the people of the world to cushion their fall)

Nick February 10th, 2010 12:16 AM

Even though I know they would never do that, ragging on your friends is what friends are supposed to do so I'm going to say "Of COURSE they would do that!"

No one's ever asked me that before. When I say "But all my friends have that" or "All my friends do that" people usually just realize that I want to fit in just a little more than I normally do and usually just go with it. But I will certainly ask "Why would they want to jump off a bridge?" just to be a smartass the next time someone asks me that, regardless of who it is.

rainbow February 10th, 2010 12:17 AM

My teacher says "If your friends ran into the middle of the road, would you?""

ITS SO DAMN ANNOYING

Taemin February 10th, 2010 12:35 AM

Oh god, I hate that analogy. xD

Mainly because my mom uses it ALL THE TIME. It's mostly when something requires me to spend money, due to something all my friends are doing. Like going to Naka Kon.

"Well, I dunno.. I figured I'd cosplay too, since my friends are."

"It doesn't matter what they're doing. What if they all went and jumped off a bridge? D<"

To me, it always seems like she overreacts when she uses that against me, and then I want to tell her to lighten up. xD;

xJordan360 February 10th, 2010 12:38 AM

Lemmings to the sea, anyone?
:3
Typically, I don't get this argument thrown in my face anymore, seeing as I have always out-logic'd my parents even if they don't use failing points such as that.

Corvus of the Black Night February 10th, 2010 5:56 AM

I never felt the necessity to do stupid things in the first place, so my mother or father never really stopped me... because I never wanted to do it.

Elite Overlord LeSabre™ February 10th, 2010 10:04 AM

No, because I've never gone and done stupid things with my friends. And if I was going to, I certainly wouldn't be asking them permission. It would go like this:

Me: "So, I'm going out with my friends."
Mom: "To do what exactly?"
Me: "You know, just stuff."
Mom: "What kind of stuff?"
Me: "Ma, it's not like we have the night planned out. We'll just play it by ear."
Mom: "Alright then, just stay out of trouble."

Guy February 10th, 2010 2:06 PM

I haven't had that one thrown at me in the longest while now. Usually when it was asked though, I would say, "Now, why would they do that?" or "I guess I would do it too then..." just being smart and all. Though, it's usually understood that my point is I just want to do what's happening then and not get put in the corner not having anything to do with what my friends have or do.

I used to get bugged with that question from my mom though, not really my dad. After awhile, it just stopped.

*PrincessPika-chu* February 10th, 2010 2:09 PM

My momma always asked me that...but stopped, because I just got too smart for her. I would say, "But none of my friends aren't stupid enough to jump off a bridge, and if they did, that's their choice."

mew² February 10th, 2010 3:28 PM

My mom has said this many times. My following responses...
"No, I'd be on the top of the bridge laughing at them"
"No, I'd be there to catch them."
"Yeah! It's called bungie jumping!"

ReyRey-Pyon February 10th, 2010 7:30 PM

Why wouldn't you want to jump off a bridge?! its what ALLLLL the cool kids are doing B|
be cool. jump off a bridge (b'')b

My parents never say that kind of thing...at least i don't think so. I really should start paying attention. o3o
I never really ask to do anything silly anyways o3o

RivalGator February 11th, 2010 8:00 AM

Eh, they might have once or twice, but I can't remember it. But yeah... My friends probably would jump off a bridge... They are adrenaline junkies from hell.

Fearless Love February 14th, 2010 12:27 AM

My Dad says it anytime I complain about my friends parents letting them do something he wouldn't let me do. This would be the typical conversation:
Dad: If your friends parents gave them permission to jump off a bridge, would you expect me to?
Me: Yeah. I wouldn't do it, but yeah!

DarkDreams February 14th, 2010 7:19 PM

Lol. Only had my teachers throw that one at me :P I just reply: "What if they're NOT my friends?"

If I feel brave, i'll say "I control them. So, no. I make them jump off"

Though, i'll almost never say the second one. I might get 1/2 of lunch off :P

Callandor February 14th, 2010 9:16 PM

I didn't have a lot of friends when I was younger, and I never go out as it is, so I've never had that thrown at me, but I personally love the line "If all your friends were made a bridge, would you jump off them?"

Calder February 14th, 2010 9:28 PM

i always say IDK how high are we talking?
