The Pokéathlon

It's a great feature of HG/SS IMO...I think I'll be playing it a lot; looks really entertaining (like a minigame set)
I personally like the Ring one and the Snow one too!

Information about the Pokéathlon, for those that don't know what it is, can be found here:
http://serebii.net/heartgoldsoulsilver/pokethlon.shtml
So... What about you? Do you like it? Or do you prefer the Super Contests?

Guy February 11th, 2010 9:09 AM

I actually haven't gotten the chance to try out the Pokéathlon as yet as I never got the chance to pre-order the games from Japan or anywhere else outside of the US. Although, this coming March when I do go to pick up my games I will take part in the events and compare whether I prefer it to the Super Contests and Pokémon Contests of DPPt and RSE. I've been a strong player through contests since it was introduced in the Third Generation. When it came back in the Fourth Generation with more to it, I was quite pleased with how it turned out. Though, I couldn't help but feel it got just a bit more easier.

By the looks of things, the Pokéathlon seems to come off as a good twist to the game. It's caught my attention for the very least, to say. The set-up of the idea is pretty stable and isn't too complex (though, why should it considering the game is aimed at the younger generation of fans), however I wish it to be a bit more challenging from the Super Contests. I can say that I may not be surprised if I enjoy this more than the Pokémon Contests as it seems more intriguing from how the ribbon-awarding contests first looked.

What is the PokeAthelon exactly?

The Pokéathlon is a new concept to the games, much like Pokémon Contest, however with it's very own twist. In this you must enter three Pokémon (not just one). Each Pokémon must compete in it's own field or category they each fit in of which you choose. From there, the game itself will select three events for you to take part in fitting the categories you selected. You also have the ability to raise your Pokémon's stats for the category it fits as well by "shaking Apricorns". Quite a cool concept to cover up for Pokémon Contests.

If you wish to read more about it though and possibly understand it a little better, then you can check it out here, The Pokéathlon.

To read more on the stats I was referring to, then a visit here would be helpful as well. :D

rockman0 February 11th, 2010 1:57 PM

I seems like a really cool feature. The Super Contests were really fun to me, so I can't wait to try this out.

Master Kavar February 11th, 2010 1:59 PM

To be honest i've nerver even herd of the pokethon before is it in the HG/SS game, and what is it about?

TheAppleFreak February 11th, 2010 4:39 PM

I can't wait for it. I didn't like Super Contests much (or regular contests, for that matter), but these look interesting and more engaging than a Contest.

Check Hiiro's post above yours, or the Rules/Known Info Thread's 2nd post, it's all there. =/

Anyways, I quite liked the Pokethlon and look forward to playing it some more come the Australian version. I found it more entertaining than the D/P/Pt Contests (and probably RSE's contests as well) - more to do besides just choosing options or some make-shift dancing and dressing up... which makes for a neat and fun change for me. Different events as well makes for variety.

Newbie 2.0 February 16th, 2010 11:53 AM

As of right now, I don't know what to expect for the Pokeathlon. It looks cool, but I really enjoyed the Super Contests and was really disappointed that they were taken out. So, I hope that this Pokeathlon does a great job.

Ashyboi_7 February 17th, 2010 11:26 AM

Looks great!
And it is great I have a copy of the japenese version and played it.... And I must say it was really fun!

Can't wait for the realese :P

Bluerang1 February 17th, 2010 4:54 PM

Very good and creative idea, I'm impressed, it's one of the reasons I want to get HG/SS. But I thought Contests were here to stay :( This could be good news for Ash's next female partner, no worrying about doing better than mum in Contests, it'll be about Pokéathalons.

passionfruitt March 2nd, 2010 3:59 AM

i can't wait, it looks like fun. i love mini games :3

fisheydude March 2nd, 2010 5:08 AM

I can't wait to play them. They look like a small game package all to themselves. I never liked the contests myself. I would do them for ribbons, that's all. Mini games are always great.... and now they are with pokemon.... AWESOME!

Gary Oak FTW March 26th, 2010 3:06 PM

Holy crap...

I just got done playing the pokeathlon power thing for like 3 hours straight. I can't belive I overlooked the pokeathlon until this late in the game. It's so awesome just playing a huge soccer game or king of the hill or the brick breaking one.

THIS GAME IS AMAZING

GoombaMuffins March 26th, 2010 3:08 PM

Yeah I love it too, I found myself playing it for an hour last night when I should have been training my Pokemon :P

SIN1488 March 26th, 2010 3:12 PM

I skipped it when I got to that point. I just didn't want to mess with it then. Now that I know it's entertaining, I guess I should go back.

Guy March 26th, 2010 3:16 PM

Merged your thread on how much you liked the Pokéathlon here. I figured there was no need to close it when we can just bring back a thread already made for this discussion. Plus, it'll let others know we have a thread to discuss whether one likes the Pokéathlon or not.

As for me, I have yet to try it out. I'm really focusing on completing the game's storyline first. Otherwise I might get side tracked if I really do enjoy it that much. XD;

Espeon Master March 26th, 2010 3:29 PM

It's fun. I've played it a couple times, but I'm not very good xD Right now I have the speed and stamina medals.

TheAppleFreak March 26th, 2010 4:27 PM

It's official. I LOVE the Pokéthlon.

I utterly despised the Contests, as all of my Pokémon were battle oriented with battle-oriented movesets. It took me ages to figure out how to win a Master contest to get a star on my Trainer card, and I hated it (For the record, I somehow managed to win with a Cresselia that looked utterly ridiculous in the dress-up portion).

Fast forward to HG. Since the Pokémon participating got an entirely new set of stats for the Pokéthlon, not dependant on any moves, I've been doing it whenever I'm not playing the main storyline. The fact that there's actually variation in this (compared to three rounds that are always the same, with identical mundane procedures for completing it) is what makes it good. Although I don't particularily like the Soccer game, the rest of the competitions offers good gameplay and competition.

So yeah.

Syrp/Pnoob March 26th, 2010 4:37 PM

Meh. I tried to be good at it, but I just need to anticipate the events.

-S

Sudeki March 27th, 2010 2:43 PM

I will admit the pokeathlon is alot better then the contests, although I've got so bored with it now, I mean after going and beating all the highscores/trophies in a matter of about 2hours, I was completely disapointed D:, Now its hard to play them over and over just to get points for the items, I average about 550-600 points per run(With the added 100).

Zacceh March 27th, 2010 2:51 PM

It's a pretty fun feature. Love that you can get some really good items at the rewards counter, like evolutionary stones, Rare Candies, and vitamins. I've got all but two of the max records broken, I think. I may be down to just one now. I know that I've yet to get the Penance Capture record yet... Hate that thing.

Pennate Capture was the last record I broke, I've only gotten 36, like 4 times, Just do 4 runs of 9's and your good.

Zacceh March 27th, 2010 2:57 PM

Ah... Thanks for the tip. I was running 5's...

Well doing runs if (9's) I usually end up getting the finish line at the last second, Its a good thing it counts all the ones you have if you finish and the time runs out.

Lt_Nite March 27th, 2010 3:36 PM

I didn't really like contests at all but I love the Pokeathlon, the mini games are fun and I just love the whole concept, but does seem like it'd be short loved. Guess I'll see!

perfectmonster March 27th, 2010 8:15 PM

The highest I've ever gotten in a stamina contest is 390 points. Go doduo!!!

Espeon96 March 28th, 2010 12:29 PM

I love the Pokéathlon, I've already spent 3-4 hours play time on it, plus I hated the contests.
My team is pretty good at the Stamina Contest, my record is 519 points.
My best event is Ring Drop (or whatever the wrestling-match type event is called), I got 200 points on that event (not the points added at the end, but the score you get while partcipating)

The Fame Monster April 6th, 2010 7:44 PM

i love Pokeathlon!!

the team i use now for power is gyarados, raichu, and pineco. they always win. my current record is 451 points

Master Kavar April 6th, 2010 8:24 PM

yer its okay i guess but im not a big fan off it its just another spin of from LG/FR thats it so i wouldnt call it a new feature

I find it hard to figure out what you're referring to exactly. The Pokéathlon was never in any form or way introduced in FR/LG. Neither was the concept or idea if I remember correctly. So, the Pokéathlon is actually a whole new feature to the game as it was never introduced in previous Pokémon games. Much less, FR/LG never even included the Pokémon Contests at the time like RSE had introduced. So, it's pretty new if I had to say so.

Right now though, my focus on the game has basically been on the story. I haven't tried the events in the Pokéathlon Dome as yet, so I couldn't say what I think of it. I do have intentions of trying it out though, and from what I can tell it'll be enjoying which is why I'm aiming to defeat the entire competition. >:)

Master Kavar April 6th, 2010 8:35 PM

haha defeat the entire competition i had trouble doin it the only one i could do was hurtle race, also im saying its a spin off beacuse LG/FR had mini games in it too and the pokethon is just more mini games but with juges and power jucie with known as aprijucie now in relation of thoses two id say not a new feature thats my opion yours mabye different but hey im not here to ague im just opening up my opion lol

so it's a spin off because it has mini games? that is a horrible reason. every pokemon game had some sort of mini game.

if you have trouble doing it then pick different pokemon. different pokemon are good at different things.

EJ April 6th, 2010 8:48 PM

I'm a beast at the Speed Competition with my venonat, drifblim and togepi

:3

zerwey April 6th, 2010 9:03 PM

I LOVE the Pokeathlon! It beats Super Contests any day, although those are pretty good too. :P I really enjoy both.

MASTERBOSSgodora April 6th, 2010 10:48 PM

I'd have preferred if they had just made the Contests like the anime AND had the pokeathlon.

curiousnathan April 6th, 2010 10:58 PM

Me + Poke'thalon = One medal left until championship games.
But even though I have got 4 medals, I am not fond of the Poke'altholon and I really relied on luck.
I always get the lowest bonus. The Skill course is killing me, bad.

Although, I do like how it is an added feature. It is better than having nothing at all. I love the desing of the building and training parks out the front.

Master Kavar April 6th, 2010 11:26 PM

i used my three legandary dogs for mot of my speed events haha

Same, I got a Vulpix with 5 in Speed and 2 in Endurance, an Eevee with 4 in Speed and 3 in Endurance, and a Dratini with 5 in Speed and 3 in Endurance. They're all decent jumpers, too.

loliwin April 7th, 2010 2:22 AM

I LOVE the Pokeathlon. :D
Block Smash is the best thing ever. The highest score I got was 130 blocks.

Pikachu-dance! April 7th, 2010 3:28 AM

I absolutely LOVE super contests and I absolutely LOVE the pokethlon i'M allready at the hall of fame!

560cool. April 7th, 2010 4:50 AM

I just hate that Football thingy ... )--:
Because every time the ball starts from the middle, a retarded competitor pushes it towards my gate >_< and after I try to remove it, I push it in instead ! >__<
My favourite would have to be Relay Run . I am quite a good runner in real life as well and competitive teaming is alright !

POKEATHLON ... FOREVER !! :)

Pikachu-dance! April 7th, 2010 5:03 AM

I say Pokethlon and pokethlete because pokeathlon and pokeathlete sound too close to athlete to me

MegaTravis April 7th, 2010 5:10 AM

I love the Pokeathalon. It is so much fun. I am going to be spending alot of time playing the different games.

vibratingcat April 7th, 2010 5:10 AM

its good but once u've beaten all the records, it gets boring. but it was a nice add on. block smash is fun

⋚Raika⋚ April 7th, 2010 5:21 AM

I'm the BEST of the BEST at the Speed section... At least compared to the silly AI. My personal best for the relay is 16.1 laps. ^_^

Ninja Caterpie April 7th, 2010 5:25 AM

I'm imba at the Jump competition with Togekiss, Gliscor and Typhlosion. Typhlosion's super pro because I drugged him up. xD

This one time, I got 34/0/0/0 for Disc Catch because I stole every single one of them. ^^

Thats my highest score for the relay too! I love that game!

sgspacemonkey April 7th, 2010 5:54 AM

I LOVE the Pokeathlon. I suck at skill games though, my favourite ones are Stanima and Power (it's fun shoving those other Pokemon around, lol.) It's especially fun playing it with friends, but why does it resort back to slow text speed even though we all prefer it fast.

PALKY April 7th, 2010 7:03 AM

i have 3 bages in pokeathlon.
power,stamina,skills

Elina April 7th, 2010 7:22 AM

The pokeathlon is great.I already have a medal but I'm not very good. Thanks to my pidgeotto! Now I'm training hard for the next medal!

aкισ April 7th, 2010 7:25 AM

Yeah, it's really cool.

Personally i like the Snow one the best (:

coconutberry April 7th, 2010 8:36 AM

I like it a lot... I think it's way better than the Sinnoh contests. (It doesn't beat the Hoenn contests, though; those were awesome!) I entered once and my Haunter won bonus points for working the hardest... I got a little emotional about that. My Haunter is so cute! XD

Rick. April 7th, 2010 9:16 AM

I only got a Bagde in Jump. Havent been playing Pokéathlon that much..

Vindel April 11th, 2010 4:54 AM

I've beat all the challenges to get into the lower rooms. I like the Pokéathlon a lot. Fun minigames.

MickX April 21st, 2010 7:02 AM

I know the thread is old, but I wanted to post to give some praise for this great mini-game series (given I'm using the Pokéathlon forum skin even, lol). Technically when I stumbled upon it I couldn't let it go until I got the Trainer Card star and overall set up solid scores on each event, postponing Morty's Gym match even further. x)

I'm kinda proud of my 19.7 Lap run on Relay Run (though the amount of mistakes makes me think beating the 21 Lap mark just narrowly would be possible, further even with 5 Speed/5 Stamina team mates), as well as some 500+ points on the Speed, Skill and Stamina Courses. I'm having a lot of trouble getting the 80.0 Sec, 50 Flag and 130 Block marks on Hurdle Dash, Pennant Capture and Block Smash though.

morrison April 21st, 2010 7:25 AM

I am loving it :D There is only one thing I havent achieved yet which is 50 wins in all disciplines. :D

BlueScizor April 21st, 2010 8:31 AM

My game freezes as soon as I go in :disappoin

OldMax April 21st, 2010 2:35 PM

maybe is cause you have a blue scizor? ;)

lol jk

morrison April 22nd, 2010 9:01 AM

I have made digda winning all of the competitions as well ^^, He is an ace runner whether it is long or short distances :D

EJ April 22nd, 2010 9:06 AM

I made it all the way to the lower room with my statue. It's an addicting event xD

ILoveDragonite April 22nd, 2010 9:30 AM

Why can't i have the pokeathlon and contests? I love them both and i want them both! >=)
Also i have a golden statue of myself in the pokeathlon =)
