Pokémon Gold/Silver Spaceworld 1997 Demo info
So, here's a little something that I've been working on for awhile. With all of the HG/SS hype lately, it got me interested in continuing this project. My goal was to collect information about G/S, before it was delayed in March of 1998. I compiled a website containing my findings (not really organized, mostly an information dumpsite)
http://web.me.com/celebi23/Spaceworld_97_Pokemon/Main.html The most amazing part of my findings is that I've been able to track down about 4-First hand accounts of the Pokémon Gold/Silver Spaceworld 1997 Demo. With those, I was able to create a decent summary of the demo. Please keep in mind that I had to use Google/Yahoo Babelfish/Excite translation tools so, the translations may not be 100% accurate. If anyone is fluent in Japanese & would want to translate some of these pages, that would be amazing  Combined Spaceworld 1997 Demo Information http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/t_swd.png http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/kin.gifhttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/gin.gif
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/01.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/01_1.jpg (<--The demo stations in the right bottom corner of this picture) http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/Spaceworld_GS_Demo_Map.png A map of the Gold/Silver Demo area. The Silver Demo area is on top & the Gold demo area is on the bottom. On the far right part of the map is the Gold/Silver movie area. Some demo stations were located in this area as well. They showed a short video with names/artwork of new Pokémon. There were 60 demo stations for Gold & 60 for Silver. Now on to the summary: Demo was played on November 22nd, 1997. The demo originally lasted 10 minutes. This was later reduced to 5 minutes due to the long lines. Demo started with Lapras surfing, Pikachu singing, Charizard's Flamethrower. Title screen is Ho-oh/Lugia depending on which demo you played. You had to say what time it was before the demo could continue. Professor Oak appeared at the start of the game to introduce you to the world of Pokémon. You're automatically named Ash Ketchum. The game started in the town "Silent Hills". You started in your room. http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/gamen2.gif (Click for a larger version) There was a random assignment of a LV.8 Pokémon: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/kurusu.gif Kurusu PokéDex No.:212 Type:Water Moves:Growl, Water Gun, Tackle http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/honooguma.gif Honooguma PokéDexNo.: Type: Fire Moves: Ember, Leer, Scratch http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/hapa.gif Happa PokéDex No.:152 Type: Grass Moves:Tackle, Serene, Leech Seed No matter which started you were given, a Nut was equipped to it. When your Pokémon's HP amount drops below half, it is automatically recovered at the end of the turn. You had the following items: PokéBalls x 5 Heal Powder? x 10 Mint Berry x 1 Revive/Revival Herb? x 1 In your room, you had an N64, dolls, radio, computer, etc. A radio transmission played: "Oak disappeared from Kanto. There is a view of moved the location for a new Pokémon & this event might be the cause. The safety is a concern." It might be at this point that Oak found the new Pokémon. The PC is connected to a homepage somewhere & says "Yoroidori (Eaamudo/Skarmory) is the newly discovered Pokémon. It's type is flying & it's classified as metal. The rival shows up. It is another boy from Red/Green/Blue? In the demo, you couldn't go into Oak's Lab or even a Pokémon Center to rest your Pokémon. Someone stops you from entering the Pokémon Center. Taking the exit on the west side of town, there were a few patches of tall grass. The following Pokémon were confirmed as wild Pokémon: Pidgey Rattata Pikachu Mariru (Marill) (No,179) Kirinriki (Girafarig) (still used the old design of two heads) http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/kirinriki.gif Sunny (Sunflora) Haneko (Hoppip) No.214 Rediba (Ledyba) No.202 When a Pokémon was captured, it is recorded in your Pokédex (you automatically start with one in this demo). With the new Pokémon, it only states "Newly discovered Pokémon. Under investigation." When encountering a wild Pokémon, a PokéBall pattern displays on the screen. Graphically, it's similar to Red/Green. Your Pokémon has it's back to you & it is facing the wild Pokémon. Under the HP gauge, there's a gauge to show how much more experience your Pokémon needs to get to the next Level. When capturing a Pokémon, the ball splits, One half above the wild Pokémon & the other half below. Much more like the Anime's version of capturing Pokémon. There is a highland to the west of this area that resembles Veridian Forest. There's some Pokémon Trainers in the grass. The wild Pokémon in this area: Caterpie Metapod Paras Venonat Clefairy Meowth Slowking Two of the Pokémon Trainers in the Forest were: Schoolboy http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/gsfaq_trainer02.jpg Lass http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/gsfaq_trainer05.jpg There is ??? at the end of the Forest. Your rival is also there. Talk to him & the demo ends. While it was getting dark, Hoothoot & Puku (a flying squirrel, maybe Sentret?) were found in the Forest. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I know you. :D
|
That looks pretty interesting. How did you find this again? The 'Pokemon' look interesting and some new places. I like it!

Yeah, this is one of my "main" forums. I'm also on the 'Garden.

Wow, this is very interesting.
Nice find. Bet it was hard to find. :P |

One of the starter pokemon looks a lot like Chikorita. Nice finds. =D

Things like this Spaceworld demo are always interesting. It's surprising how much changed between the original versions of Gold and Silver and the released ones.
These accounts are a nice find, even moreso because Nintendo is extremely tight with security, it's rare for a pre-release demo of a game (like this one) to leak. |

Remember me? I was the one that helped you correctly translate most of the moves of theose Pokemon on Serebiiforums. I was wondering if you could give me the name of the attack Serene in Japanese characters. I might be able to figure out what move it is.(If you remember, it was the only move I couldn't figure out)
|
Yay~ Thank you so much for these! That Girafarig would make a great pre-evolution for our current Girafarig~
|
It is incredible the amount of information you've been able to get ahold of.
I'd crap myself if Nintendo ever released the ROM. |
Wow, this is amazing. Maybe we will see the fire and water type pokemon seen there in fifth gen.

In other words, this information, and the amount of detail, is amazing, because hell will probably freeze over before a rom surfaces. |

I'm going to shoot a few emails out Nintendo's way just to see what I can fish up. |
That is pretty intresting, lol I love the original design of Girafarig

体当たり・成長・宿り木の種 Thanks again! |

I think that if they do release it, they would release it with other demos in one cartridge, and sell it for about $30 to $50. |

Well, that was very interesting. I'm really interested on the beta stages of HGSS, specially seeing all the beta stuff that was left on the game, and I had found that website but never translated it XD
Thank you. |
Got some updates (too much to post in a reply so, I'm only posting the links):
* Added some information from Yamauchi's Spaceworld Keynote *Added some pieces of Sugimori artwork to the Combined Demo Summary *Put together an analysis of a video clip from Spaceworld 1997 (Thanks to Miretank from the Unseen 64 Forum) *Confirmed the Gold title screen from the Spaceworld 1997 Demo |
I absolutely love you Celebi :D
|
I want the demos. One of the pictures of Silver on your site makes him look kawaii, almost innocent~
|
I remember seeing posts like this on the Serebii forums (not a member, but a constant lurker!) and thought they were very interesting. Like a few others who posted, I think it'd be spectacular if anyone ever found a working demo version from that event - the summary said the games were 80% complete at the time of the event, correct? I wonder how much was included...

*sigh* If only they'd make a cartridge with ALL of the different beta versions of every Pokemon game... |
Woah, this is fascinating! I recall learning about these early, drastically different versions of Gold and Silver somewhere else, but they weren't nearly as indepth.
Some particular personal points of interest: It's odd and interesting how you were named after the anime character in the beginning. I'm glad they changed the starters; the fire starter looks too amorphous and like a fan-made Pikachu edit, and the water one looks like a generic splice of Lapras and Dewgong. On a similar note, the early Hitmontop design looks a lot like Togepi for some reason. |
I also added the scans from the July 1997 issue of Computer & Videogames Magazine
|
The betas will turn up at some point. They always do. A beta cart for Super Mario Bros. 2 turned up nearly 20 years later.

(2) This time Professor Orchid (I'm assuming that's Oak?) has asked you to travel over the whole country in search of all new PMs (Pocket Monsters) so that you can collect them for him - not just the town. The last part is confusing, "so that you can collect them for him - not just town." What does that even mean? (8) You now have a new mode of transport. In the RGB versions you used a bicycle, but in the GS versions you have a rather trendy Skateboard! Ah, now I remember that a Skateboard was originally programmed in, but then they decided against it. This picture really intrigued me. http://www.pokecommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=52512&stc=1&d=1266411507 The symbols on the walls make me think that maybe it had something to do with the Unown? |

Maybe? :nervous: |

It's the second one: the magazine didn't know anything. They refer to Pokemon as "Pockemon", Charizard as "Lizardo", and Mew as "the evil Myuu". It's an amusing look into how one particular magazine viewed the franchise before it even came out.
|
Quote:
That's just plain dumb. |
Oh wow! That is extremely interesting!
|
Is this like .... what the were originally going to do
coz it looks by far cooler than the orginal versions of gold and silver |

In other words, the sentences were poorly translated due to a lack of understanding. No contextual knowledge, combined with pretty poor Japanese translation skills. I propose that the edited version of point 2 be pointed out (excuse the bad pun), purely because it makes more sense than the C&VG translation. Also, isn't "Rizaado" (Lizardo) Charmeleon's Romanised name? |
Honooguma looks amazing!
If only they released it on G/S. It proves how the pokemon always looked so much better back then. |
Quote:
C&VG seems very much like a casual sort of magazine... There's a lot of profanity and bad writing, but they did cover games that most other magazines didn't. The magazine has been a good resource for that exact reason. |
OMG XDDDD!!!!! Chikorita's Orgins....Happa?!
|
A couple of updates. First off, I know that my website is acting up. It's just not displaying the html pages in Safari. If you view the source of the pages, everything is still there. I just republished the entire site & that didn't fix it >_< I'm going to call Apple's MobileMe support on Monday
Second, some of the earliest Pokémon Gold/Silver artwork came from this magazine cover http://web.me.com/celebi23/Spaceworld_97_Pokemon/Game_Review_Volume_14_files/game14.gif No scans from the magazine itself exist. That might change soon. I did a search on Google & came up with http://ameblo.jp/trio-the-punch/entry-10332216419.html http://ameblo.jp/trio-the-punch/image-10332216419-10243930367.html It looks like the guy has a whole collection of these magazines. I sent him a message (yay Google Translate >_< ) asking if he actually has that issue & if he could scan it & then email me the scans. Will keep you guys updated |
pokemon is epic way don't we do a speed run together
|
Do you HAVE this ROM?
I didn't quite understand this, is it actaully released or scheduled? Anyone, this is really cool! |
You know I'm very interested in this sort of stuff. The things you will find in Betas is incredible. The original Pokemon Red/Blue was filled with crazy stuff in the beta. Even after production, Pokemon Gold/Silver still had Beta maps, and one of my favorite songs from the Gen II games. I've actually posted it for download on this same forum.
Now I saw a thread posted a long time ago (Sadly, it's now closed), which mildly proved Jirachi was a Beta Pokemon for Gold/Silver. Now although this seems a bit far fetched, take this into consideration; Gastrodon was originally going to be in Gen III, but was moved to Sinnoh. The Jirachi could be obtained through a rediculous cheat of some sort, and it was rock/flying, perhaps to give the conception of a meteor. My guess would be that it would be common at night in mountainous areas. Although many people believe it is fake, crazier things have happened in the Pokemon World. Mew cheat, Pomeg glitch, and the aforementioned Gastrodon. Anyways hoped that tidbit of info helped! ^_^ |
So theres no BETA rom
I have been researching a LOT and there were lots of beta maps and ditched graphics of gold and silver why the all look so cool but then again if they used those betas then we'd be looking at the ones that are on it ( which would beta) and think they were cool |
I could hack FireRed or Gold/Silver, and try to recreate this demo based on information, but I'm not very good, so it would take me a while to make that kind of hack.
|
Wowza ! :0 So many changed !
From the map screenies , I think that all these graphics were better in the demo . Dunno why , :/ just looks beter ! :D |
