Pokémon Gold/Silver Spaceworld 1997 Demo info

So, here's a little something that I've been working on for awhile. With all of the HG/SS hype lately, it got me interested in continuing this project. My goal was to collect information about G/S, before it was delayed in March of 1998. I compiled a website containing my findings (not really organized, mostly an information dumpsite)
http://web.me.com/celebi23/Spaceworld_97_Pokemon/Main.html

The most amazing part of my findings is that I've been able to track down about 4-First hand accounts of the Pokémon Gold/Silver Spaceworld 1997 Demo. With those, I was able to create a decent summary of the demo. Please keep in mind that I had to use Google/Yahoo Babelfish/Excite translation tools so, the translations may not be 100% accurate. If anyone is fluent in Japanese & would want to translate some of these pages, that would be amazing

Combined Spaceworld 1997 Demo Information

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/kin.gifhttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/gin.gif
  • Expected Release Date: March 1998
  • Tentative Price: 3500 yen each
  • Game was 80 percent complete.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/01.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/01_1.jpg (<--The demo stations in the right bottom corner of this picture)

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/Spaceworld_GS_Demo_Map.png

A map of the Gold/Silver Demo area. The Silver Demo area is on top & the Gold demo area is on the bottom. On the far right part of the map is the Gold/Silver movie area. Some demo stations were located in this area as well. They showed a short video with names/artwork of new Pokémon. There were 60 demo stations for Gold & 60 for Silver.

Now on to the summary:
Demo was played on November 22nd, 1997. The demo originally lasted 10 minutes. This was later reduced to 5 minutes due to the long lines.

Demo started with Lapras surfing, Pikachu singing, Charizard's Flamethrower. Title screen is Ho-oh/Lugia depending on which demo you played.

You had to say what time it was before the demo could continue. Professor Oak appeared at the start of the game to introduce you to the world of Pokémon. You're automatically named Ash Ketchum.

The game started in the town "Silent Hills". You started in your room.

(Click for a larger version)

There was a random assignment of a LV.8 Pokémon:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/kurusu.gif
Kurusu
PokéDex No.:212
Type:Water
Moves:Growl, Water Gun, Tackle

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/honooguma.gif
Honooguma
PokéDexNo.:
Type: Fire
Moves: Ember, Leer, Scratch

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/hapa.gif
Happa
PokéDex No.:152
Type: Grass
Moves:Tackle, Serene, Leech Seed

No matter which started you were given, a Nut was equipped to it. When your Pokémon's HP amount drops below half, it is automatically recovered at the end of the turn.
You had the following items:
PokéBalls x 5
Heal Powder? x 10
Mint Berry x 1
Revive/Revival Herb? x 1

In your room, you had an N64, dolls, radio, computer, etc. A radio transmission played:
"Oak disappeared from Kanto. There is a view of moved the location for a new Pokémon & this event might be the cause. The safety is a concern."
It might be at this point that Oak found the new Pokémon. The PC is connected to a homepage somewhere & says "Yoroidori (Eaamudo/Skarmory) is the newly discovered Pokémon. It's type is flying & it's classified as metal.
The rival shows up. It is another boy from Red/Green/Blue?

In the demo, you couldn't go into Oak's Lab or even a Pokémon Center to rest your Pokémon. Someone stops you from entering the Pokémon Center.

Taking the exit on the west side of town, there were a few patches of tall grass. The following Pokémon were confirmed as wild Pokémon:
Pidgey
Rattata
Pikachu
Mariru (Marill) (No,179)
Kirinriki (Girafarig) (still used the old design of two heads)
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/kirinriki.gif

Sunny (Sunflora)
Haneko (Hoppip) No.214
Rediba (Ledyba) No.202

When a Pokémon was captured, it is recorded in your Pokédex (you automatically start with one in this demo). With the new Pokémon, it only states "Newly discovered Pokémon. Under investigation."

When encountering a wild Pokémon, a PokéBall pattern displays on the screen. Graphically, it's similar to Red/Green. Your Pokémon has it's back to you & it is facing the wild Pokémon. Under the HP gauge, there's a gauge to show how much more experience your Pokémon needs to get to the next Level. When capturing a Pokémon, the ball splits, One half above the wild Pokémon & the other half below. Much more like the Anime's version of capturing Pokémon.

There is a highland to the west of this area that resembles Veridian Forest. There's some Pokémon Trainers in the grass. The wild Pokémon in this area:
Caterpie
Metapod
Paras
Venonat
Clefairy
Meowth
Slowking

Two of the Pokémon Trainers in the Forest were:

Schoolboy
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/gsfaq_trainer02.jpg

Lass
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b355/eisnerguy1/gsfaq_trainer05.jpg

There is ??? at the end of the Forest. Your rival is also there. Talk to him & the demo ends. While it was getting dark, Hoothoot & Puku (a flying squirrel, maybe Sentret?) were found in the Forest.

I combined the following sources to create the summary of the Spaceworld 1997 Demo:

And a short summary of the video shown near the G/S demo area:

I've got a ton more information on http://web.me.com/celebi23/Spaceworld_97_Pokemon/Main.html
Screenshots of G/S before it was delayed in March of 1998, early game art, the first PokéDex entry (Screenshot is Amphrados from some point in 1997), press releases, magazine scans, etc.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I know you. :D

Teh Blazer February 11th, 2010 9:55 PM

That looks pretty interesting. How did you find this again? The 'Pokemon' look interesting and some new places. I like it!

I did a few searches of "ニンテンドウスペースワールド97" (Nintendo Spaceworld 1997) or "ニンテンドウスペースワールド97 ポケットモンスター 金" (Nintendo Spaceworld 1997 Pokémon Gold) or ""ニンテンドウスペースワールド97 クルス" (Nintendo Spaceworld 1997 Kurusu) and that's how I found the 4 summaries of the demo.

Redstar February 11th, 2010 10:43 PM

Yeah, this is one of my "main" forums. I'm also on the 'Garden.

Team Rocket's Raichu February 12th, 2010 7:29 PM

Wow, this is very interesting.

Nice find.

Bet it was hard to find. :P

Eh, it wasn't easy  I'm just glad that I've been able to preserve this information before it was lost forever :D

One of the starter pokemon looks a lot like Chikorita. Nice finds. =D

Happa was the original design for Chikorita. Thanks :)

Things like this Spaceworld demo are always interesting. It's surprising how much changed between the original versions of Gold and Silver and the released ones.

These accounts are a nice find, even moreso because Nintendo is extremely tight with security, it's rare for a pre-release demo of a game (like this one) to leak.

Nothing was "leaked". All this information was readily-available and distributed by Nintendo itself at various SpaceWorld conferences. Much of this information could also be found on countless fan sites on GeoCities and other free-sites, of which I even located the R/B/Y-style POKeDEX entry for Ampharos.

I'm aware that this information was readily available. Perhaps I should rephrase my post- it's nice to have this information, because I doubt that a playable build of the Spaceworld G/S demos even exists anymore. Sorry for the confusion.

Dunsparce February 15th, 2010 6:44 AM

Remember me? I was the one that helped you correctly translate most of the moves of theose Pokemon on Serebiiforums. I was wondering if you could give me the name of the attack Serene in Japanese characters. I might be able to figure out what move it is.(If you remember, it was the only move I couldn't figure out)

Usagi-Chan~ February 15th, 2010 7:45 AM

Yay~ Thank you so much for these! That Girafarig would make a great pre-evolution for our current Girafarig~

Virtual Chatot February 15th, 2010 9:15 AM

It is incredible the amount of information you've been able to get ahold of.
I'd crap myself if Nintendo ever released the ROM.

Lady Gaga February 15th, 2010 9:43 AM

Wow, this is amazing. Maybe we will see the fire and water type pokemon seen there in fifth gen.

As I said- I doubt that this build even exists anymore, unless an employee of Gamefreak kept the source code on a computer for archival purposes.

In other words, this information, and the amount of detail, is amazing, because hell will probably freeze over before a rom surfaces.

Nintendo has probably cataloged everything they've ever done for legal purposes, most companies do.

I'm going to shoot a few emails out Nintendo's way just to see what I can fish up.

GlitchCity February 15th, 2010 11:45 AM

That is pretty intresting, lol I love the original design of Girafarig

Oh, hey! Thanks again for helping me with those. Sure, here's Serene (and Happa's other moves) in Japanese characters:

体当たり・成長・宿り木の種

Thanks again!

I doubt that they would respond.

I think that if they do release it, they would release it with other demos in one cartridge, and sell it for about $30 to $50.

I've just sent them the email, hopefully I can get some kind of response out of them.

Update February 16, 2010
Quote:

Hello,

Thanks for writing! I'm afraid that we're unable to confirm the existence of any demos of Pokemon games. Much of our development is actually done in Japan, so it's possible that many demo versions may have existed of games in development, but there's no way for us to confirm any of these. Most of our resources are focused on technical support for the Wii and Nintendo DS systems, so we have very little information available on game development.

Sincerely,

Kurt Wagner

Nintendo of America Inc.
I'm going to shoot a few emails to friends of mine who speak Japanese to see if they could send a few emails Nintendo Japan's way; maybe we can stab something.

Ivysaur February 16th, 2010 5:03 AM

Well, that was very interesting. I'm really interested on the beta stages of HGSS, specially seeing all the beta stuff that was left on the game, and I had found that website but never translated it XD

Thank you.

Got some updates (too much to post in a reply so, I'm only posting the links):

* Added some information from Yamauchi's Spaceworld Keynote
*Added some pieces of Sugimori artwork to the Combined Demo Summary
*Put together an analysis of a video clip from Spaceworld 1997
(Thanks to Miretank from the Unseen 64 Forum)
*Confirmed the Gold title screen from the Spaceworld 1997 Demo

Virtual Chatot February 16th, 2010 2:42 PM
