10 Badges?!

I was playing the hack Ash's Quest and read that Gary collected 10 badges. Wait, 10 badges???!!!! I checked in the anime, and sure enough, Gary had 10 badges (and wanted an 11th). How did Gary get 10 badges, there were only 7 previous gyms (excluding the Kaz and something Unofficial Gyms)?

Check out the picture:

Actually there are more than 10 Gym Leaders in Kanto in the anime. Remember all those extra towns that weren't in the game that they went through? Well there are a lot more of those.

Teh Blazer February 14th, 2010 11:59 PM

And these gyms do offer badges once beaten, right?

Of course, another clue to this is in a Pokemon Chronicles' episode where inspectors were closing Gyms that weren't fit to be official Gyms anymore.

Myles February 15th, 2010 1:54 AM

There are fifteen known Kanto gyms (or at least badges), one for each of the original types.

Teh Blazer February 15th, 2010 11:27 AM

Then, would you need all 15 badges to enter the Kanto Tournament-thing?

TheAppleFreak February 15th, 2010 11:37 AM

I guess you'd only need 8 badges to enter the Indigo Conference, given that's what Ash did.

Kirbychu February 15th, 2010 1:21 PM

^Yeah, I think that's how it works in most regions.

I think that's still the case in Sinnoh. Here's Barry with his badges. Note that about half of these are different from the games.

tee_bird February 16th, 2010 10:06 AM

That's an interesting picture, Kirbychu. I like how most of those badges look like modified Kanto badges.

Damiano February 20th, 2010 7:49 AM

A trainer can get as many badges they want, they just need a minimum of 8 to meet the leagues requirements and to enter the league.

CliveKoopa February 20th, 2010 8:35 AM

What I find interesting is in Abra and The Psychic Showdown is that Ash says back then "if I don't get a Marsh Badge, I won't be able to get into the Pokemon League". But then the anime then proves that quote wrong by having Gary win 10 badges.

Lord Varion February 20th, 2010 10:39 AM

well he could of ( just to make ash jealous) had one of oak's aides ( or oak himself) make forgery badges O_o !!! coz i remember jessie and james making fake badges

maybe Ash didn't know about the other towns.

How did I not see this before? It's obvious Gary is a complete fake. I bet you that he payed those hookers to hang out with him, and that dirty cheat steals "rents" Pokemon for league battles. We did it in Stadium, why can't he do it?

Does anyone know if some regions have an exact order to gain badges, or if there's conditions to face some gym leaders? Didn't Norman say to Ash that he needs more badges to face him? Is it possible that you need a certain amount of badges to face some leaders?

Are you being sarcastic?

Well I don't know about Kanto or Johto, but Hoenn was definitely implied to have a specific order for gyms (It's in Home sweet Hoenn, otherwise known as AG003.). Sinnoh made a similar implication in that Paul was seen challenging Roark as being apparently his first gym despite the fact that he could easily fight Veilstone Gym or the other portside gyms as their first gym, not to mention Ash's badge case (Why create those indentations?)

KissTheSkull656 February 24th, 2010 1:20 PM

I wish we had that many in the games. That's not counting Gold/Silver where we also had Kanto, I'm just referring to one region.

If Ash had got three pokemon prior to reaching Norman's gym, he would have battled him before Roxanne. However, on the other hand, the PokeNAV did say that Dewford Island came after Rustboro City even though Lavaridge Town was closer.

jasonresno February 24th, 2010 7:19 PM

There are probably boat loads of gyms that, so long as they are maintained, function just like the ones we are introduced to in the games and the anime. Maybe the ones we have run through are just a certain 'circuit' or something.

Darthbane2007 February 28th, 2010 6:37 AM

Keep in mind that that there are numerous more towns in the anime that aren't in the games. HopHopHop Town ( I just like to think of it as Celadon City) and the town where Snorlax plugged up the river. Also we have the Yas and Kas Gyms, so there is evidence that there is several other gyms..

Umm, he did battle him before Roxanne, but the match was interrupted, and after the blastoff, Norman explained that the first gym was actually supposed to be Roxanne's Gym, and that he is supposed to be fought later (implying that there is indeed a set order.

Remember the (titans?) episode where Team Rocket steals Ash's badges? They stole alot of different trainer's badges and they were all unique, in the anime there are more than 8 alot more, but you only need 8 of them to enter the champion league, so ash choose those 8 and Gary wanted to do more...Ever wonder why the gym leaders don't have lines? If there were only 8 and you needed 8 to enter the championship there would be a huge line at every gym.

Yes but that battle didn't count as it wasn't an official battle. Ash only had Pikachu at the time and both Norman and Max said that the Petalburg gym rules were 3 on 3. If Ash had three pokemon at that time, he may have battled Norman officially before Roxanne and got his Balance Badge before the Stone Badge.

Mew~ March 1st, 2010 10:40 AM

Well in the anime It seems there are more then 8 badges in each region! Look here and scroll down to anime for more details: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Badge

CliveKoopa March 1st, 2010 10:50 AM

I don't see why a trainer should battle gyms in a specific order in Hoenn or any other region for that matter. What difference does it make? And anyway, what if the trainer comes from Evergrande City or Sootopolis City. How would you expect him or her to go all the way to Rustboro City just so he/she can earn his/her first badge? Sometimes the games and the anime too seem to assume that every trainer must come from Pallet Town or Littleroot Town, etc when its quite obvious that trainers can come from anywhere.

Well, the way he said it, or at least the way the plot summary worded it, made it seem as though Ash had to actually face Norman much later on than he should have, even if he had 3 pokemon. I'll quote the part in question:

Quote:

Later back in front of Norman's gym, Norman explains that he's actually a Gym Leader Ash is supposed to fight later on. The first gym he should try is the one in Rustboro City; they'll have to get through Petalburg Forest to get there though.
If there wasn't a set order in Hoenn, why would he even explain that he's a gym leader that Ash is supposed to fight later on. I mean, that would imply that there is a set order.
