4 Senses

Having lived with 5 senses all our lives, can you imagine a world where there were only 4 sesnses? Which sense would you prefer gone compared to the others? Living blind, deaf? Unable to feel a touch? Unable to taste or smell?

For those of you who just look at the bolded question in a first post:
Which sense would you rather get rid of?

I think that I'd get rid of sound. Don't get me wrong, I love audio and music, but sight is much too important to me. I also cannot imagine living without being able to feel a touch of something. Intimacy would be gone completely. I love tasting stuff. I love food, haha. And getting rid of scent incidentally gets rid of taste, so no thanks.

The Cynic February 18th, 2010 1:34 PM

Smell probably... seems the least significant. Its important of course but not as important as the others.

Incidently, there are actually between 9 and 21 senses. Scientists are sure of 9 and then disagree about all the others up to 21.

There is touch, taste, smell, hearing and sight. Then there are:

Equilibrioception - Your sense of balance.

Thermoception - Your sense of temperature.

Nociception - Your sense of pain.

Proprioception - Your sense of awareness. Close your eyes and lift your hand. You can tell where it is without feeling, seeing, tasting, smelling or hearing anything to do with its location. That is proprioception (Ha! I made you lift your hand, mind slave!).

There mabye more. Sense of danger, sense of hunger etc. but these have yet to be confirmed as proper senses. The 9 I previously mentioned are the official 9 senses!

Sorry, couldn't resist being a smartarse. :cer_wink:

^ he only meant the 5 very significant senses. Not other other "minor" senses. >_>

Which sense would you rather get rid of?
Hearing. Do not include balance since the ears is actually 2 senses in one. But I hope I won't get rid of hearing.

We would just keep falling over if we didn't Equilibrioception. :0

And like ^^, I'd get rid of that minor sense. Heck, I've smelled something that I can still smell to this day. >_>

The Cynic February 18th, 2010 2:59 PM

Yeah, sorry about my post... I feel like a total douchebag now for being all "smarty" :cer_blush:. I'll keep my useless trivia to myself from now on. Just thought it would be interesting for folks to know so they could outsmart their Biology teacher or something. I wasn't trying to make you look dumb (and you don't, I just look like a smartarse). My bad.

*kicks self repeatedly*

I know this isn't a "sense" in the traditional way, but if I had to lose anything, I'd want it to be my voice. There's other ways of communicating besides speaking (sign language, writing, typing, etc.) so that'd be the easiest to deal with losing, in my opinion. I'd probably die if I went blind and I certainly wouldn't enjoy being deaf either.

But if that doesn't count as a sense, then I'd probably have to choice taste. I'd sacrifice tasting things to be able to hear, see and feel.

That's actually true, I kinda forgot about those. I guess it's just so much more traditional to say the Five Senses rather than the Nine. :P

Keep in mind that getting rid of scent also gets rid of taste. Plugging your nose makes you lose all taste.

Esper February 18th, 2010 3:38 PM

Would anyone really give up sight?

Out of the "traditional" senses I'd give up my sense of smell. I hardly have one as it is and when my allergies kick in I can't smell a thing so I wouldn't be loosing much.

mikey February 18th, 2010 3:48 PM

I suppose smell, because I would not want to lose my sight or hearing... So yeah, I think I could live without smell.

Ayselipera February 18th, 2010 5:00 PM

I think I could go on without the sense of smell for the rest of my life. It would be sad at times when it comes to cooking and food might not taste the same, but I think I could manage.

Conan Edogawa February 18th, 2010 5:20 PM

I would probably give up hearing. That way I can still taste to my full ability and be able to see.

TrinityLimit February 18th, 2010 5:36 PM

i would probably live without taste. it would be unfortunate to not be able to taste things, but i think i could have a normal life without it still.

Legobricks February 18th, 2010 6:04 PM

Opening this, I was expecting a long dissertation on why one of them should be downgraded in status to no longer be a classical sense.

Yeah, well... Removing my sense of pain would be cool. Yes I understand it makes me prone to suffer fatal injuries without even noticing, but that doesn't stop it from being cool.

Spinor February 19th, 2010 3:41 PM

Ok, let's make a tree of bad stuff that will happen if I get rid of a sense:

Hearing: I won't be able to hear my music, and life would be hell

Sight: I won't be able to see my computer screen and life would be hell

Touch: I won't be able to tell what my hand is touching, I won't tell when I am bleeding to death, and life would be hell (after you touch the damn stove and set the house on fire)

Taste: NO F-ING COKE! NO F-ING WAY!... and life would be goddamn hell.

Smell: I won't tell when there is a dangerous gas on the loose and will probably be close to death a few times. Food will also taste bad. HELL

Proprioception: I won't be able to tell if I still have my... umm... actually, screw this sense. I'm not gonna need it.

Caelus February 20th, 2010 11:53 AM

Out of the ones you listed I would remove smell. It's probably the least important out of the five senses for me, but I'd rather keep them all. :<

Banjora Marxvile February 20th, 2010 12:37 PM

I'd remove touch. True, you'd get serious injuries, but you can withstand what others can't. If you monitor yourself, you can make sure you aren't in too much danger (and people do have no sense of touch, due to nerve... Things), whereas the other senses are harder to check for hazards (toxins with smell, poison with taste, sounds of murderers or evil lurking with sound, and sight for seeing things of danger.). You can still avoid danger, but you can also tell if you are damaged from checking, whereas without the others it is harder to look for key things.

I actually lived without the sense of smell for about four years, or with a very, very reduced sense of it. I had extreme allergies and my tonsils were inflamed for a long period of that time, so it messed up my nasal cavity pretty badly. After I got my surgery, my mom says that I was sniffing flowers and asking what they were, what the sense of smell was. Because I hadn't experienced it before.

So I'd probably live without the sense of smell because there's really nothing very important about it, unless you're in a house that is set on fire. That's about the only time I think it would be useful to have it. Though I read a story where the main character didn't have a sense of touch. It was about the sweetest story I read but it frustrated the boy to not have that sense, since he couldn't be with his boyfriend intimately, because of the whole no-touching thing :/

...*goes to read that story again*

Which sense would you rather get rid of?
I would get rid of my sense of smell, although I will still retain some of my taste.

Go ahead and get leprosy then :nervous:

Honest February 20th, 2010 2:40 PM

Hmm, taste, touch, vision, hearing, and what was the last one? Oh right, smelling.

Not really, I can't imagine anything without any of them. I find it amazing how blind or deaf people can live...

But if I had to get rid of one, I'd choose smell. : / I don't know why. :P

Circuit February 20th, 2010 3:17 PM

I'd choose probably taste. Get rid of smell, you lose taste as well, partially. Sight, Hearing, can't imagine life without either of those, and touch, well, I love my cats so, yeah.

Taste it is.

Harmonie February 21st, 2010 9:29 AM

I'd get rid of my sense of smell. The rest of them are far too important.
