[Beta 2.0 released] Pokémon Aqua Sapphire

2 Attachment(s)
POKéMON: AQUA SAPPHIRE VERSION

I try to be at least somewhat modest, but I now consider myself a fairly skilled scripter. I've begun learning ASM, but as it's not my highest priority right now, I haven't learned much yet. (My only original routine just changes the player's play time, which is fairly useless) I'd love to get a music hacker, GOOD Fakemon spriter, OW spriter, and maybe a mapper to help me with this project.

STORY-TYPE STUFF
Spoiler:
There is already a timeline between FRLG and GSC, but none between FRLG and RSE, so I made my own. This takes place 4 years after the events of Sapphire, and 17 after FireRed.

After being defeated by a young child, Archie, the leader of Team Aqua, realized that awakening an ancient legendary Pokemon was not the correct method to expand the sea. Without being able to control it, the Pokemon would simply flood the entire world. Ashamed, as well as a wanted man, Archie left Hoenn. Many of his underlings left him, but the loyal few went with him, to the Balta region. Archie's goals remained overall the same, but he had learned of a new, presumably less dangerous way to accomplish them. Somewhere in Balta is a manuscript revealing the hiding place of a sacred crystal. It is said that this crystal's holder has the ability to manipulate the weather. However, it was sealed because it was decided that no one, human or Pokemon, should have such an atrocious power. Team Aqua's goal is to find the manuscript and ultimately the "Weather Crystal".

Professor Oak retired from his research ten years after the events of FireRed to the Balta region. He decided his knowledge must be passed on to the new generation, so he opened a Trainer school in Sierra City. Qualifying students are issued a pass, and after a short period of classes and a final test, a Pokemon League-certified Trainer Card.

MAP
Spoiler:
http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/4289/regionmap.png
Balta is small and cluttered, and Mt. Silver connects it with the Kanto and Johto regions. In the hack you'll be able to go to the areas within the red rectangle. It's very possible that there will be more areas than those, however.

SCREENSHOTS

VIDEOS
Spoiler:

OTHER TIDBITS/FEATURES
Spoiler:
  • The game is started with the Running Shoes and National Dex. Insignificant, but meh.
  • The berry shop in the character's hometown sells every berry with a purpose, meaning no Pinap/Razz/etc, but it does sell Ganlon and the like.
  • You don't get to choose your starter, Oak gives you a Marill. However, the early routes have enough "rare" Pokemon to counter this.
  • There are no gyms. Some of the towns or areas are plagued by Team Aqua. After defeating one of Aqua's admins in their temporary hideout, the city awards you with a medal of honor, functioning as a badge.
  • Most of the Gym Leader-esque Aqua Admins are recurring. There aren't 8 different monotype admins or anything like that.
  • The Pokemon League has different (but not really) rules. Only VIPs are given the priviledge of battling the most elite trainers of Balta. One can be automatically given VIP status as a hero if they earn 8 medals of honor.
  • Headbutt Trees are here (Thanks to Darthatron, I used his script as a skeleton) Like in GSC, Pokemon will sometimes be asleep when they fall out of the tree. As well as finding a wild Pokemon, headbutt trees may drop a berry.
  • All 386 Pokemon will eventually be obtainable.
  • Some (remapped) parts of Kanto will be reachable.
  • Balta, Kanto, and Johto Battle Tower-style Pokérenas with exclusive prizes.

BUGS/GLITCHES/ETC.
  • The fence above the pond in Teal Town shows the player's reflection. -I have no idea what's causing this or how to fix it
  • Sometimes a wild pokemon in the grass will be found sleeping.

BETAS
The green link is the newest beta. There was a blunder on my part, so to avoid an annoying bug, download the bug-fix patch titled ASb2.1.zip, and apply that patch to Beta 2.0.
Beta 1.0
Beta 2.0

CURRENT PROGRESS
  • Work on Beta 2.1 has not started yet.

miksy91 March 9th, 2010 8:22 AM

You should rename Oak ;) (EDIT: I didn't read the story before commenting)

Although you're a beginner, by the screenshots the hack looks fine to me.

Pokepal17 March 9th, 2010 12:35 PM

I agree with Miksy. This looks very good for a beginning hacker. However, you're maps could be a bit better by reducing the space. Apart from that, this looks like a good hack.

Good luck. ;)

chrunch March 9th, 2010 11:06 PM

I agree with Pokepal and Miksy, this hack is good for a beginner.:)

chimchar8 March 10th, 2010 12:52 PM

You know what this hack is great!! and awesome story line too!
lots of good luck with this hack!

giradialkia March 10th, 2010 1:27 PM

Oh, wow, this is strangley similar to my idea.
(OBVIOUSLY, as I haven't actually posted a thread yet, I am in no way accusing you or suggesting anything here).
Since I've a similar (but not identical) idea, I like this:) the whole thing about Nintendo not having any real continuity between games other than RBY and GSC (and their remakes, obviously) irks me somewhat.

Hedgehogger March 10th, 2010 3:23 PM

That's one of the best stories I've seen for a beginner hack. I hope this progresses well, and I might be able to help you a bit if you need anything.

PeregrineFig March 10th, 2010 3:49 PM

Wow, it's great that I've been given nothing but positive feedback so far. This is really keeping up my motivation to keep working through the mundane stuff like indoor mapping and writing scripts for generic NPCs.

If anyone's interested, a bit further down the line I'm going to need an OW spriter. I'd really like sprites of the male and female Team Aqua members, Archie, and Maxie in the FireRed style, as well as some other custom stuff. Graphics are the only thing I can't do at all.

EDIT: There's also one more thing. This computer runs on Vista, and even with the controls registered Sappy won't work. If I provided the .s files and a .ips of my hack, I'd need someone to add a loop to the files, write them into the ROM, then make a new .ips and send it back to me. I also don't need this done right this moment either.

OW Sprites, you say? I think I could help you on that...just send me a PM.

PeregrineFig March 14th, 2010 7:55 AM

Thought I'd give a quick update for anyone who cares. Progress is going good, and a beta should be coming soon. I haven't touched the OWs yet, and I have no plans to change tiles, but I did do a palette change. I like the bright, glowing feel the new palettes give.

hamermaner March 14th, 2010 12:42 PM

Looks good so far. I think the screen shots look good. Good luck with this man! Also, I love Maril, haha, so this should be great.

jerk March 14th, 2010 2:44 PM

the scrips look very good. i dont like the pallets though.

Pokemonhacker March 15th, 2010 11:06 AM

hi do you need any help as i will dedicate my self for a new hacker thats doing a lone hack as i have done 3 myself and was taught by a great freind of mine.

Lord Varion March 15th, 2010 11:17 AM

Yellow flowers ^^
i like yellow flowers

So this hack looks good

Need anyhelp?

PeregrineFig March 15th, 2010 11:20 AM

I posted a help recruitment post for the two major jobs I need. If anyone who asked to help is good at pixel art and things of that nature, I could use a support banner. (If I have any real supporters XD)

hamermaner March 15th, 2010 12:42 PM

I'm making a support banner now, I'll edit this post with the banner, hope you like it.

PeregrineFig March 15th, 2010 12:55 PM

Wow, that's a really nice banner. I'm going to put that on the first post of the thread. Thanks!

hamermaner March 15th, 2010 12:58 PM

No problem, wish they would've looked better though. If you need any help that has to do with art or something, I'm pretty good.

Darkerm March 16th, 2010 8:32 AM

Maping is good. I think you should post some new screenshots.
~~~~~~~~~~
http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/330/paletteshot.png
I lke those yellow flower.
PeregrineFig March 16th, 2010 1:11 PM
Progress is going extremely well. I'm not going to bother posting screenshots of the Devon warehouse, Team Aqua's first hideout, because I'll be uploading an alpha version tomorrow (or, in a worst-case scenario, the day after) that will let you play it for yourself.
chrunch March 17th, 2010 12:03 AM
Can't wait for the alpha. :3
Crimson Stardust March 17th, 2010 5:42 AM
This looks great imo,you can work on the maps a bit more,make the plot twist here and there to make it more interesting but the story currently reallt atrracts my interst,lol,thats what i think..
For the maps,there is too much empty spaces around,maybe add few things here and there to make it look nice except that if you are aiming to do the original games type maps,then ok..
Hope to see more updates,
Signing off,
Feeling extreme 'Ace'
Alpha_Spike March 17th, 2010 7:02 AM
Hey nice hack though I think I read somewhere that FR/LG/R/S/E all are set in the same time which is 3 years before G/S/C/HG/SS/D/P/Pt but I'm not too sure.
PeregrineFig March 17th, 2010 1:23 PM
I actually have quite a few ideas for plot twists, wait until you see some of your recurring allies against Team Aqua ;) And, the maps actually look pretty nice and full, but the screenshots rarely show these good spots because I like to screenshot scripts and things of that nature instead of just my maps. I just need to rewrite a couple scripts and finish up Walden City and I'm uploading Alpha 1.0.
Be prepared, the first aqua admin is BRUTALLY hard, you WILL need to catch and raise at least one more pokemon to win the battle.
PeregrineFig March 18th, 2010 11:37 AM
Beta 1.0 is out now, the link is posted in the first post. I've thoroughly tested it so I don't anticipate many bugs, but please report them if you find them. Also, you can't enter the Subterranean Tunnel on Route 50, that's not a bug. The entrance area of the tunnel will probably be added next beta.
altariaking March 18th, 2010 12:22 PM
one question
could you please make this an attached file? megaupload hates me...
this does look like an interesting hack though, so good luck :)
oh, and that bug you mentioned, you can fix that with block editor in a-map
PeregrineFig March 18th, 2010 12:30 PM
The strange thing is, I did look at the block in the tile editor, it has a 00 background byte, and it only shows the reflection with the fence pieces directly above the water. The same fence pieces above regular grass don't do this.
PeregrineFig March 21st, 2010 5:53 PM
Quick progress update, I've been stalled for the last few days working on other parts of this hack. It took me several hours studying the hex workings of the behavior bytes, inserting a few multichoice boxes, and creating and tweaking the scripts for various things like headbutt trees. I just finished balancing the difficulty of what was in the beta, as I found it way too hard. I'm now continuing with the mapping of route 51 up to Triad City, the next town. Screenshots will be up tomorrow, and the next beta may take a week or more, depending on how much time I have to work. I also fixed the palette of the grass animation, so no more strange ugliness :)
PeregrineFig March 22nd, 2010 4:42 PM
If anyone is confident in their mapping skills and would like to help me, I need a forest map made with default FR tiles, using tileset 0 and whatever secondary one you desire, dimensions 42 by 46. I hate making these dungeon-type maps. Don't worry about the specifics, I just need 2 exits. I'll edit small parts to my liking anyway. You will be credited on the first post and somewhere in the ROM if you do this for me.
PeregrineFig March 25th, 2010 12:23 PM
Some (MAYBE all) of the 4th gen evolutions/pre-evolutions of earlier gen Pokemon will be present in this game, using the 25 empty slots.
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f201/PeregrinFig/bonsly.png?t=1269548580
Darkest Shade of Light March 25th, 2010 12:46 PM
I could do the mapping thing for you, but I'd have to know a few more specifics, like... Do you want the warps set in? What map would need to be replaced? Do you need wild Pokémon Data inserted? Do you want me to do this in A-map over a current map, or just make a custom and save the picture?
PeregrineFig March 25th, 2010 12:49 PM
I can do wild Pokemon, warps, other events, heck, even movement permissions myself, I just need the map itself drawn, and saved and uploaded as a .map file. It's going to be replacing Viridian Forest. Size of the map and tilesets used really doesn't matter. If you do this for me, it's a huge help.
Darkest Shade of Light March 25th, 2010 12:55 PM
Could I give you a .ips file with Viridian Forest overwritten and then you could change anything else? Also, is there a specific pattern you want the forest in, I'm really good with mazes, but forests are another strong point of mine...
PeregrineFig March 25th, 2010 12:58 PM
You can design the map however you'd like, it would be great if it was a little maze-ish. And, wouldn't the .ips overwrite the other parts of my ROM? (Although I can easily patch it to a clean FireRed ROM and save the map to a folder, so that would be fine)
Darkest Shade of Light March 25th, 2010 12:59 PM
1 Attachment(s)
Actually, you can re-patch the ROM unless you were saved in Viridian Forest. And I was only planning to change the map and hand it over in the .ips file, I'm actually working on the map right now, Lol
EDIT: Here is the .ips patch
PeregrineFig March 27th, 2010 2:48 PM
Uploaded a video of a little script. HyperCam put the little squares on the grass tiles, they don't look like that in-game.
PeregrineFig March 29th, 2010 11:57 AM
Oh, look, some custom tiles! (just a few, not a whole set)
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f201/PeregrinFig/screenie6.png?t=1269892617
Darkest Shade of Light March 29th, 2010 2:49 PM
Uhm, if there's a new patch I could get, that would be helpful... I got through most of the beta, and then I left for about five minutes while my nephews and nieces were over, and there goes half the files in My Documents... *sigh* PeregrineFig, if there are any update betas, I'd like one. Thx u
PeregrineFig March 29th, 2010 3:18 PM
I'm hard at work on Triad City, and once it's done, Beta 2.0 will be released. It has a large list of updates, more than just an expansion to the next city. I'm currently working on the game corner, and after that I'll make the gym-type area, then the rest of the town.
Darkest Shade of Light March 29th, 2010 3:46 PM
Ok. Thx PeregrineFig (I hate typing that out, will PF work?). I also had pix of a few bugs, but my nephews/nieces were VERY thorough...
PeregrineFig March 29th, 2010 3:55 PM
If you can remember what the bugs are, could you try to describe them to me? There's a good chance I already wiped them out, but I want to be completely sure my hack's as bug-free as it can get.
Darkest Shade of Light March 29th, 2010 4:08 PM
Sorry. I had pictures so that I wouldn't HAVE to remember, 'cause my memory sucks...
PeregrineFig April 1st, 2010 1:51 PM
Progress is going excellently, and now that I have a load of free time, Beta 2.0 should be coming out soon. Because 1) The ROM was expanded to 32MB and 2) There's a large list of changes that might cause oddities, I'm going to release Beta 2 as a .APS patch instead of .IPS, and make it patch to a clean FireRed ROM again rather than Beta 1. Old save files will most likely cause oddities, so when Beta 2 comes out, you'll need to start over. I will disregard bugs/glitches/oddities found on an old save file.
altariaking April 1st, 2010 3:51 PM
i have a suggestion.
you should resize the murkrow sprite to make it smaller, because it's too big.
first beta was great, so i can't wait 'til beta 2 ^^
PeregrineFig April 1st, 2010 3:54 PM
The Murkrow sprite is changed now, as is every single other sprite. Thanks to Wichu and his Sprite Editor and Sprite Pack, I very easily replaced all 386 pokemon with their HGSS sprites.
Darkerm April 1st, 2010 4:30 PM
I like the story. I like your New badge system. Headbut tree with berry this is something new and a very good Idea. Wishing you good luck.
PeregrineFig April 1st, 2010 4:43 PM
I'm about to post a video of Game Corner stuff, it just takes a while for this video to upload to Youtube. (With sound it's 441 MB T.T) In a few (or a lot of) minutes this post will be edited with the link.
Pretty good so far. Is the whole drinking thing necessary though?..
PeregrineFig April 1st, 2010 6:26 PM
Of course it's not necessary, but I found it humorous :P There's not a massive amount of edgy jokes in my hack, just a couple.
Darkest Shade of Light April 2nd, 2010 5:24 AM
Well, I guess that'd be acceptable... Buuut, I'm not in charge. Any plans for a beta release soon:?
PeregrineFig April 2nd, 2010 6:16 AM
Beta 2.0 will be coming out soon. Before I finish up Triad City, I need to write 6 scripts for other people I'm working with.
PeregrineFig April 4th, 2010 12:12 PM
I really need a music inserter, as Sappy won't work on my computer. Please PM me if you're interested in filling this important role. You'll be credited both in-game and on this thread.
Rick. April 4th, 2010 12:45 PM
..........huh...
I know its a bit rough, but god damn! make a new trainer sprite
i mean, thats like one of the best things about Pokemon hacks.
I dont know if it is impossible to do with FR/LG - no hard feelings...
PeregrineFig April 4th, 2010 12:47 PM
First of all, I'm an awful spriter, I couldn't make a decent sprite to save my life, and I won't just replace the trainer OW unless I have the front and back sprites to go with it. Also, graphics are my lowest priority. I just don't see them as important, as I know I personally don't care what a game looks like as long as it's enjoyable.
Mana April 4th, 2010 12:52 PM
So you know nothing about hacking and are telling someone how to make their hack better?
Things such as sprites and OW changes are not essential to the game and can easily be added in last minute.
PF is focusing on scripting and things which is the most essential part of making the game enjoyable.
PeregrineFig April 5th, 2010 1:04 PM
Well, Beta 2.0 is almost done, I finished the Power Plant. Lars is really annoying, his first two Pokemon love paralysis and his third one can crush most Pokemon. I can't even beat him T.T But a skilled trainer will have no problem with him if they level their Pokemon more first ;) Once I put the finishing touches on the existing areas and make the entrance area to that tunnel, I'll be releasing a new beta.
EDIT: A new video is up, watch Aqua Admin Lars absolutely crush my feeble party!
I love a challenge! He looks tough XD
Team Rocket's Raichu April 5th, 2010 1:55 PM
This hack looks good, but there is two things that really are annoying me.
1) You've mixed FireRed/LeafGreen overworlds with Ruby/Sapphire overworlds. You shouldn't do this since the sprites are shown at different perspectives.
2) The pallets in the second set of screenshots look to dark. It would be better if you lightened them up a bit.
I only put RSE OWs in because Team Aqua and Maxie are crucial to my hack's entire storyline. I can and probably should replace the old man one I'm using for Prof. Oak. I can't sprite to save my life, so I'm trying to find someone who can remake those OWs in FRLG style for me. As for the palettes, I personally like them, but I might modify them later :)
PeregrineFig April 26th, 2010 10:58 AM
I wanted to let anyone who supported this know that while I'm not administering a death sentence, the project is going to go on hiatus. While my laptop was being repaired I modded my Wii and got my R4DS card in the mail, so I'm extremely occupied with 19 new DS games and SNES and GBA emulators on my Wii. I will eventually resume work on this project, but it may be a little while until that happens.
PeregrineFig May 3rd, 2010 10:59 AM
Update: I got a new hex editor and a new wave of ambitions, so it's time to finish up Beta 2.0. I hope to have this worthy of being bumped into Hacks Showcase before long.
SamSam67 May 3rd, 2010 12:57 PM
Loooooks all goood
the screens are good
but you have mixed FR Ows with RSE ones
And lol at the last screen~
:( i want5 soup
The Original Darkwiz787 May 3rd, 2010 3:14 PM
I caught that seinfeld refrence. You sir, win.
Arma May 4th, 2010 1:34 PM
I like the fact that you can encounter sleeping pokemon in the grass. You shouldn't remove this. It's an interesting feature, and it's original.
PeregrineFig May 4th, 2010 5:03 PM
It only happened if the variable to make a pokemon sleep was drawn when headbutting a tree, but no wild pokemon fell out. I did an overhaul of my headbutt tree script and fixed this problem. (Though a new, more annoying one popped up :/)
PeregrineFig May 4th, 2010 5:06 PM
My deliciously palette-edited battle screen. It does take getting used to, but I like it.
Azumarril sprite
4 Attachment(s)
So I was playing, and when Marill evolved, I got this (check the screenshots):
Am I the only one whose Azumarill's sprite is literally broken?
PeregrineFig May 5th, 2010 11:10 AM
I became aware of that problem and fixed it in the version I'm working on. I never even evolved my Marill in that old version, and when I overwrote every single Pokemon sprite it fixed that weird tilemap pointer.
Darkerm May 5th, 2010 11:22 AM
Cool battle scree, I like it. But I think you should make it a little Darker. Btw, waiting for beta 2.0. Good luck
PeregrineFig May 5th, 2010 4:00 PM
This is a rough idea of the game's world map. This is definitely not the map that will be used in-game, but I drew this up to show Balta's location relative to Kanto and Johto. You'll be able to visit the areas within the red rectangle in-game, and probably at least a few areas outside the rectangle.
PeregrineFig May 16th, 2010 2:08 PM
My motivation came back to me, and I'm almost done scripting the beta. Here's a little screenshot of the new town in this version.
Cynder The Bloody Angel May 19th, 2010 9:45 PM
that looks so awesome i cant wait to play it °w° (im just downloading )
miksy91 May 19th, 2010 10:31 PM
The worldmap looks good but I've some critic for it :P
It feels strange that there was something between Johto and Kanto so I think you should make that new area be somehow else. For example, make it so that you can access it from Route 25 (above Cerulean) :D
Besides, the world is very large so it will take a long time to finish it.
Make it that big, if you're willing to complete the hack as well ;)
Here it is, Beta 2.0. Patch it to another clean FireRed ROM. START A NEW SAVE FILE! Sorry for the inconvenience that causes, but due to the application of the hacked FR engine, if you continue an old save file you WILL find bugs. I had to use A-Ptch this time because the ROM was expanded to 32MB while applying the hacked engine. (And I'm too lazy to change it back 9.9) There are significant changes and additions, and many will be easily noticeable. Please report any and all bugs you find to me. Suggestions are welcome, too.
I think I'm going to start a new hack on the side, just working on it to pass the time when I can't think of ideas or lack motivation for this hack. A thread won't be up for a while, just mentioning that I'm going to start that first and resume work on this a little later.
Yeah, I thoroughly test my betas and didn't get that problem. Re-extract a clean ROM and try repatching.
I'm not sure that this was mentioned but... While playing the game, a huge glitch happened... After nurse joy gives you your pokemon back in sierra town or wherever porf. oak's school is... the screen goes all crazy funky colors and nurse joy reapeats her last line and the game freezes. Is there a fix? What went wrong?
EDIT: Sorry, I just notoced someone posted tish too... sorry.
Huh. I just started a new file, and got this glitch too. I'm going to look into it and hopefully I can figure out the issue.
Edit: I think I solved it, in the script the snippet with her last line uses a return command despite being called with a goto. I'm about to upload a new beta that should work.
Yeah that happened to me too( the nurse joy glitch). But besides that, the game was really good until i stopped playing because of that glitch. I really like the tiles and how you could get an arcanine so early(hes my favorite fire pokemon) and i really liked his sprite. anyways good luck with this game
