Shiny Shaymin March 13th, 2010 6:01 PM

No, I'm not getting the strategy guide, I don't think I really need it.

Midnight Jog March 13th, 2010 6:01 PM

Yes, I am. My desired team is: Glaceon,Snorlax,Dragonite,Jirachi,Suicune, and Espeon!

Niprop March 13th, 2010 6:07 PM

Tch, I've played through Crystal enough times that I don't need no silly strategy guide! Besides, if things get ugly, I've got the Internet!

thedestinedblade March 13th, 2010 6:07 PM

Nah, gamefaqs is all you need!

MegaKuriboh March 13th, 2010 6:14 PM

Probably not I'll use serebii.net best option plus it's FREE and if I don't have access I'll use my old gold

Ryanpoketrainer March 13th, 2010 6:17 PM

i played silver too many times not to know what to do so i dont need one and if i dont know what to do i just do others things untill i do

Grafx March 13th, 2010 6:19 PM

who uses a strat guide when u have access to the internet lol

Aro-kun March 13th, 2010 6:23 PM

Why would I use a strategy guide? I still remember everything from gold/crystal/silver, and There's the internet too. I wonder who writes the strategy guides though....The company that makes the game? Game testers? Or another company that gets an early copy of the game?

GSCyndaquil19 March 13th, 2010 6:29 PM

the only games i had guides for were frlg, emerald, and the 1st pkmn ranger, not geting it for hg

manomow March 13th, 2010 6:30 PM

The guide is sweet! I have it already. Only goes to Johto though :( ...

Nashton March 13th, 2010 6:32 PM

no im not

the last one i got was for G/S and i never got another one after that.

i'll just refer to that hahah jkjk XD

i just check bublapedia for ingame events, secrets, poke's base stats and stuff.

but strat guides are fun to look at

Kirbychu March 13th, 2010 6:34 PM

I've got some newfangled thing called the internet myself. I think it's all I need.

It's usually companies that get early copies like Nintendo Power and Prima.

MadaraUchiha. March 13th, 2010 7:02 PM

Yea, HeartGold, Ho-oh figure and the guide! I have played crystal over 50 times but I just like the pictures and I want to know where certain pokemon are, also peoples team line-ups really matter even tho my typhlosion can pwn the elite four

..

i get the strategy guides to look at pics 2 and to look at in skool and make sure i do every thing in the games

A Snooty Walrus March 13th, 2010 7:12 PM

I use strategy guides as reading material!

linkinpark187 March 13th, 2010 7:15 PM

Are you serious? A game guide? It's Pokémon! You really don't need a guide for Pokémon, do you? Today's youth.... :\

Xebelleon March 13th, 2010 7:15 PM

No.

Serebii should be good enough.
Also am unemployed so any opportunity to save money sounds good to me.

bluecat March 13th, 2010 7:17 PM

Yeah, I like looking at them plus they are good for looking up where certain Pokemon are and such. Good for making sure you do everything too.

I'll probably be getting the Pokedex/Kanto (the first book is only Johto I think) book too that's coming out next month. :D

I'll be getting the guide tomarrow, and in a few months, the pokedex/kanto guide. I like to collect the books, and the games. ^_^

Gerri Shin March 13th, 2010 7:45 PM

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I like to read things out of books, especially when I'm concentrating on something. Yes, I ordered the Guide along with Soul Silver. I plan to add it to my growing collection of guides that range all the way back to the original Red version Walkthrough/ Pokédex.

pikapower7 March 13th, 2010 7:45 PM

Nope, I'm certain that I will not get it! I figured I'll try to figure out most of the secrets by myself!

Me to april 27th thats a while though

Poeman March 13th, 2010 8:27 PM

Gamestop opens at 8, their opening early for this, good luck being first XD

Yukima March 13th, 2010 9:06 PM

Even though I've played through GSC so many times and memorized everything about it and could probably do half of it in my sleep, I'll be getting the strategy guide. All of the art in the guide will be the closest thing I'll ever get to having an artbook of the games... :'( The same went for the guides of the older games, especially for RBY/GSC.

Midnight Jog March 13th, 2010 9:11 PM

I want it, but the Johto/Knanto + National Dex Strategy Guide comes out next month, for the same price, I believe...

There's a lot of information/events in the game that are hard to keep track of because of how much there is. Events that take place on certain days at certain times, what solution is necessary for the puzzle (like the braille for R/S/E, where a guide came in handy for those who don't know braille), or even what moves a Pokemon can learn and when. I bought that giant Pokedex book that had all 491 Pokemon in it so I could know when and how what Pokemon learned what attack and what it did.

Which is why I'm going to be getting the strategy guide. Probably not the current one (if it does only go up to Johto), but the one that's released at a later date. I won't use it all the time, but only when I'm completely stuck.

I would use the Internet, but I'm not one to be playing my DS while sitting in front of a computer. Just never was something I could do. Besides, the book I can take with me if I go outside or have sitting on my lap if I'm away from the computer.

And, well, the pretty pretty pictures. Give me maps of the regions, please.

What's with my srs business posts to threads like this?

Rosegrl March 13th, 2010 10:07 PM

I know the internet has its wonders, but having a guide with all that good information at your fingertips might be too much to pass up for me ;)

560cool. March 13th, 2010 10:33 PM

Nope , no startegy guide for me ....

First , it is not getting imported to Romania . Secondly , it's called www.gamefaqs.com and it's got all you need !

Grafx March 13th, 2010 11:01 PM

plus, if you have DSI whats the point of a guide when you can just go online and check

neworleans-7 March 14th, 2010 3:00 AM

I'll most likely get the one that comes out next month.

Beckie March 14th, 2010 3:41 AM

It's not like I really need a strategy guide, but I'll probably get it anyways since I love them. *__*

My gamestop opens at 8 i asked the guy in the store yesterday when i put money down on the strategy guide!!!!!!!

Panique March 14th, 2010 3:53 AM

I wasn't planning to get it, but I ended up trading games in to pay off my preorder and got a whole lot more credit than I was expecting. My manager persuaded me into getting the books. The strategy guide is tiding me over until I get the Pokedex and/or game.

TheAppleFreak March 14th, 2010 4:04 AM

My initial playthrough will be guide-less. When I give my brother his game (and restart mine), I'll get it for him. It's a good alternative for having to open up Bulbapedia everytime you want to check where to get something or to see something's movepool.

Objection! March 14th, 2010 4:10 AM

Hm... I've got two questions before I make my decision:

1) Does it cost more than $15.00? Because that's all I'm going to have left over after I buy Soul Silver.

2) Is it worth the effort? Or is it just a bunch of pictures and moveset suggestions, or some other such nonsense?

From what I understand (based off of the Plat strategy guide), it gives you a general guide through the game, with the complete moveset of every Pokémon, generalized base stats (from 1 to 5 dots), availability, Gym Leader/Rocket Admin/Champion Pokémon/movesets, and for advanced trainers (i.e. anyone interested in competitive battling), some tips on abusing hold items and added effects (they list Serene Grace Togekiss with Tri Attack as a prime contender for this).

Swimmer Ryan March 14th, 2010 4:34 AM

Might aswell, makes more sense than having to look it up online every time.

1) I'm not 100% sure on the US prices, but I did find this on Gamestop's website if you're buying from there.

Pokemon HeartGold & Soul Silver Official Strategy Guide.

Gamestop/EB tend to have the higher prices ranges though, so I guess it's possible that you'll be able to find it slightly cheaper at another store. Handbooks generally only have the set price though, as far as I've seen.

2) I've read up to the Johto walkthrough in my handbook (and a few pages of that) and so far it seems to be pretty interesting. The Kanto walkthrough isn't included, though, which is a bit of a downside (supposedly it's included in the Pokedex, although I can't confirm that).

Sydian March 14th, 2010 6:53 AM

I beat the Japanese SoulSilver without a guide, so why would I need one for English? Besides, with internet guides up nowdays, strategy guides are near obsolete. Not saying they're not handy though. I still buy a few, only if I need a map of a side area. But hey, you can even find those via internet. Meh.

Kikaito plush March 14th, 2010 7:03 AM

if I get stuck, I will switch on my laptop then go to gamefaqs.

False Hope March 14th, 2010 7:20 AM

yeah the guide is really helpful

mikey March 14th, 2010 7:21 AM

Probably not, I'll probably just go online if I get stuck.

I don't think Johto Guide (although I'm sure the Pokedex is complete) is a part of the book that comes out next month. I got the book that came out today, and it says "Volume 1" on the spine. Plus on Amazon, it just says Kanto in the title. :/

Elite Overlord LeSabre™ March 14th, 2010 10:16 AM

When I play the games over the summer, I won't have internet. So I will

a) Download a GameFaqs guide and use it, and

b) Use my brother's copy of the guide since he WILL be getting it and use it for the maps. And the pretty pictures. And the witty content... oh, snap, I forgot, there is no witty commentary in NP/Prima guides...

c) Go based on my playthrough of Crystal last summer and how I still remember a good portion of it.

Phantom Kat March 14th, 2010 11:56 AM

Nah. Even though I have multiple game guides (PMD: Blue and Red Rescue Team, PMD2: Explorers of Time and Darkness, and LoZ: Phantom Hourglass), I won't. I've only played like ten minutes of Crystal *gets stoned*, so I don't know the storyline. I can't wait to play through Soul Silver and enjoy the storyline. I'll only refer to the internet when I'm super stuck and to check where I can catch the Pokemon I want on my team.

- Kat

Dreadnought March 14th, 2010 12:27 PM

Yeah I picked up the guide as well as Heart Gold and loved the 10% off. I actually do use it since I haven't played G/S/C in such awhile I actually did forget somethings. XD

harmonic ♫ March 14th, 2010 12:34 PM

No, because the internet is free, except for the monthly part, so I'm not gonna waste an extra $20 because I'm cheap.

Usagi-Chan~ March 14th, 2010 12:38 PM

Do I need it? No
Do I want it? No
Did I get it? Yes
My mom picked it up for me with the Games because she knows how much stress I've been under lately~ :3

Xadet March 14th, 2010 1:02 PM

I Went this morning at Noon when the Store opened, Was the first one to get it. And that was the first store to open that sold the game. :S
So i was prob one of the first in my city to get it.

Then i went back a little while after to Buy the book.
I Like to buy the book since well, I don't know, Like to overlook if i missed anything, and if i get bored i can look through the book since it shows minigames, and it also tells you things you can do if you havent already done so.

jbs829 March 14th, 2010 1:10 PM

strategy guides for any game are pretty much useless now a days, especially with the internet. the only time i ever got one was for the original red and blue because i was only 6 and had no idea how to use the internet

Skystrike March 14th, 2010 1:52 PM

I will, just for a look-through!
But, seriously, I don't need it.

Lady Gaga March 14th, 2010 3:34 PM

No, I already know this game inside out, and even though it is a great collector's item, I passed. I got the Ho-oh pre-order figure, however, so I am still satisfied ;3

Heart's Soul March 14th, 2010 3:40 PM

I feel like I'm cheating whenever I use a strategy guide, the 96-page manual is enough for me. It's also really expensive.

alphabetsoup102062 April 28th, 2010 11:14 AM

I got the first one, but when I saw that it only had the first half in it I ordered the second one. Then I heard about pokedex apps, so I cancelled it.
I got the first one with my HeartGold if you were wondering.

shookie April 28th, 2010 11:24 AM

I got the D/P strategy guide and used it on occasion, but it's much simpler to just search my issue on the internet than to look through the book. I'm obviously s.o.l. if my internet/power goes out, but it's not the end of the world.
I do think the Pokédex was the most useful "guide" I've bought in the past few years, especially if I'm traveling and get the sudden urge to draw a Pokémon but can't remember what exactly it looks like.

Porygon Z April 28th, 2010 11:30 AM

Nope.
I use Serebii.net for every thing I need.

Pokemafia April 28th, 2010 11:31 AM

I only got it because you get it half price with the game, for newbies it's actually quite good.

TapouT April 28th, 2010 12:00 PM

I just either use neoseeker or gamefaqs or serebii. Would be WAY too embarrassed to go out and buy it anyways.

Ian Watkins April 28th, 2010 12:11 PM

I played the original Gold, and the plot is the same so I know what I am doing. Besides, I still have my old magazine, which was a walkthrough, and as good as this guide crap. And it was only £3.50 xD

Guy April 28th, 2010 12:29 PM

Please don't revive threads over a month old. If you want to discuss getting the HG/SS Guide Book for Johto, then you can remake a new thread for it. =]
