A Hacker's Motivation

What motivates you to hack and why do you do it?

I cant stick with hacking, there will be times that its really fun but then I start losing interest in it and there goes my motivation.

So tell me, what do you do to keep interest in hacking?

PeregrineFig March 14th, 2010 8:53 AM

My constant motivation is my own sense of pride. Scripting and things like that become incredibly frustrating at times, but when I write a complex script and it works exactly like I wanted it to, the feeling of pride I get is worth the effort it required. Being able to look at my work and think "this is pretty good" keeps me going through the annoying stuff.

Bolens March 14th, 2010 9:01 AM

My sense of motivation is the joy and or overall product value I can give my fellow members, and those who play my hacks. I want them to be able to remember my hacks, and then on the end of completing one, they feel that I accomplished something that made them feel good, and at the same time made me feel good while making it.

akamichi March 14th, 2010 9:12 AM

hacking is fun but if you don't know what ur doing then it could be dangerous anyway its loads of fun having x999 master balls and x999 rare candys :)

Eh, I've found that if you have unlimited everything the game's boring. There's nothing to actually do when you have every Pokemon in the game, all at level 100. If you don't cheat it's more enjoyable because you have to actually play the game.

NiKaNoRoU March 14th, 2010 9:38 AM

I want to enjoy myself. I'm not hacking for others, you know. It's a hobby to me, and nothing more. Like Spriting,

Another one of these polls? T_T

Pretty much the same for me, except I script instead. :3

558122_DG March 14th, 2010 9:49 AM

Cause its fun and cool. No more so cause I like hacking, cause....I donno I just do :/

colcolstyles March 14th, 2010 9:50 AM

Ever since I was a little kid playing Pokémon Yellow Version, it has always been my dream to create my own Pokémon game. ROM Hacking has made that dream a reality for me. Everything that I want in a Pokémon game I can now have. I can pick the trainers' pokémon and wild pokémon, I can make the people say whatever I want, I can design the entire region, and (as my hacking skills have developed) I can add entirely new features to the game. Though I have discovered that making a Pokémon game is far from easy, the idea of my own completed game is what motivates me to hack.

Banjora Marxvile March 14th, 2010 10:52 AM

I only really focus on the graphics (tiles especially), so my motivation I suppose is from all the graphical things I saw and thought should be in Pokemon. Hence, my Tile Insertion. As well as my constant fear of not being remembered.

NarutoActor March 14th, 2010 11:01 AM

Ever since I was a kid I wanted to make my own video game, and fix the problems that I thought pokemon had. I always enjoyed rom hacking. Even before hacking pokemon, I would hack other game series. I love the idea of trial, and erro. Figuring things out for my self, with a little help from my friends :). But personally now my motivation is to create the best hack I can make, get my hack in the hackshowcase, win hack of the month, and mabey, just mabey; make a hack that is as popular as Shinny gold.

Alice March 14th, 2010 12:21 PM

The only hacking that I do is mapping... which I look at more as a form of art. Sort of like painting I guess. I don't do it to actually make full hacks, but just because I enjoy seeing the pictures in my head in real life. (Plus it's fun to show them off on the map rating thread lol.)

I'm going to OIT next year to study software/game programming though, and I do tons of other hacking/ game making. (CSS maps, AOM and AOE scenarios, and other games.) So, pokemon hacking kinda got left behind... the only part I seemed to truly enjoy was mapping, so I still do it a lot.

siper x March 14th, 2010 2:10 PM

what motivates me is when people like my hack.
if i lose motivation during the hack, i start playing hacks that are liked, and see the coments they have, which motivayes me to get that good.

one bad thing though (that happened to me) is that new hackers aren't excepted as much, they try to make maps, and get critisized on everything, which makes it so they might not want to hack anymore.

so there are some things that motivate, and some things that bring people down.

Satoshi Ookami March 14th, 2010 9:44 PM

I guess fun and scripting... pretty much like... when I do complicated script and it's working I'm really glad =)
And also I wanna make fans of hack happy. 'cause they can play hack they like.

chrunch March 14th, 2010 11:29 PM

I have no motivation. I do hacking for fun, and if I need motivation to continue, then it's not fun anymore. And if it's not fun, what's the point of doing it? But, I suppose the reason is to create a game that everyone will enjoy and have fun.

Ty2 March 14th, 2010 11:41 PM

Well, I just started making a hack and my friends and siblings motivate me with ideas and they help me when I don't know what to do. I want to make a hack that could at least get hack of the month or week at least. What motivates me to keep trying is knowing when the moderators approve my thread then there will be some people out there who tell me whats good and tell me whats wrong in my hack and I'll fix it right away. And guess what? When I do that I will get more compliments in my hack. The feeling of someone appreciating your work can really make someone happy. That is what motivates me.

Shiny Quagsire March 15th, 2010 6:18 AM

My motivation is the satisfaction of the community. I havn't posted one on this forum, but on another which go shut down. :(

Daeva Okami-Luca March 15th, 2010 6:27 AM

I was motivated for a very long time; and still am; it's just fun. But when you live with your nazi parents and share a computer, it makes it really hard to continue working.

miksy91 March 15th, 2010 11:27 AM

I get motivation from comments (which I rarely get) but the main issue that keeps me hacking is that it's fun and like the result of the game I make :D

gkenzx March 15th, 2010 11:36 AM

My only real motivation is, that if I pull it off, it can be really good, and that others can do it, so why can't I.

Ninja Caterpie March 15th, 2010 10:31 PM

I like it. Well, mapping, at least.

Scripting is eugh, even if I succeed, the annoyance of getting a big script working is too much.

True that so much :P

Another thing that motivates me is how its fun to do and when its done can be fun for others too.

Dabutcha March 16th, 2010 4:17 PM

The small, shredded hope that Gameboy hacking isnt quite dead yet. And that I can make some tools for it and help those people who hack gameboy roms. I really wish it was more popular cuz there are no tools...

Vrai March 16th, 2010 8:25 PM

Motivation, motivation... I generally hack for my own pride. I hack to say, "Look what cool crap I did with this!" and then go outside or something.

It's also nice to have a good group of friends (both IRL and here on PC) that support what you do and keep you working at it.

As of you, I have lost interest in hacking as well.... At the time, what motivated me in hacking was learning how to do this and that and all of the people I would meet. Being on a hacking team really motivated me awhile to do my best for my peers. (for example working on silver ice with you was a blast!) Eventually, venturing out on my own was my downfall because I had no one to support or be supported by. Occasionally I have an urge to ROM hack and I honestly really want to get back into it. I remember when working on Emerald Thunder, I got HOTM clearly on the tiles I had used. That clearly brought my view on ROM hacking down because it wasn't meant to be skin deep.

I'm sorry to hear that D:
Maybe I can help?
I'll try my best to be a good motivator for pll like you :)

I get motivated to rom hack cause its really fun nothing in particular just the entire idea that its possible i guess :D

Darkest Shade of Light March 25th, 2010 4:32 PM

I get my motivation for ROM hacking from the sense of giving other something to play, having ppl enjoy my work, and actually notice the problems with it, and care enough to tell me so I can fix it for everyone. Plus, when you get part of a game done, and you have a new event or something that goes perfect, it feels great to have accomplished something!

Thrace March 25th, 2010 9:39 PM

When I first joined here it was the thrill of learning something new. Unlike most people I never really had a desire to create my own Pokemon game, for the most part I didn't have any problems with the original Pokemon games and I didn't really think they needed improvement (which seems really foolish now). I started Genesis as a creative outlet, I was never great at things like music or art, but I always enjoyed things like programming and engineering. I think it has something to do with the 'safety' of having so many restrictions in ROM hacking that made it so appealing to me.

Nowadays however the one thing that motivates me is the idea of finally being done with Genesis and leaving this (very enjoyable) part of my life behind.

Coolboyman March 25th, 2010 9:51 PM

I work on Prism when I feel like it, I don't work on it when I don't feel like it. I once went six months without doing a single thing on Prism because I didn't feel like it. If you force yourself to ROM hack and you're not enjoying it, the outcome is usually going to suck. I dunno what my motivation is, it comes and goes for no reason...

My sentiments exactly.

You hack if you feel like it and don't do it when you don't. Hacking isn't going to get you anything besides enjoyment, so why do it when you don't feel like it?

NiKaNoRoU April 14th, 2010 10:59 AM

Well, my motivation currently is to unfold the plot. I started a new hack and it feels great to solo everything with a slowpoke pace. Many hackers lose motivation either because they get turned down (which means they were not hacking as a hobby-and you know what that means) and well, others found better things to do.

If you view hacking as something personal, non-competitive, you usually get motivated more.

Binary April 14th, 2010 11:06 AM

Well, I usually get motivated when I see other people hack or see their hacks.
It makes me want to hack and do something far better. And playing betas also help alot too xD.

Matteron (96) April 14th, 2010 12:16 PM

I get motivated from other hackers, from the fact that maybe, people will enjoy the hack and will give me the satisfaction of knowing that, and also, I get the need to perfect the hack to please the audience

raiden123 April 14th, 2010 12:19 PM

i got motivation where i see the others ROMs and when i make scripts (is strange but make scripts a saw it working make me happy xD).

in my mind i dream with another world of pokemons and another history (my history), so i never forget that dream

lol, seeing my huge huge huge huge hugee....scripts always make me happy :D.

Coolboyman April 14th, 2010 1:44 PM

I don't know...

...but I wish I did.

Logan April 15th, 2010 11:58 AM

I usually gather some from playing my favourite hacks, watching Glee and browsing the Game Development section.

sab April 15th, 2010 2:52 PM

I saw Naranja, darkblue, and genesis. After that I was determined to make a hack. I am, by the way making one, but I've decided not to post it yet.

Ninja Caterpie April 15th, 2010 4:22 PM

To be perfectly honest, I have no idea at all.

If I did, that'd be nice, but I don't. I just know that I do have motivation sometimes and other times, none at all.

Overdrive64 April 16th, 2010 7:37 AM

I have to agree with Matteron on this one. That feeling that someone, just one person, is enjoying themselves thanks to your creation... that's motivation.

Christos April 16th, 2010 7:42 AM

Moved all the posts from the other motivation thread here. One thread is enough. :3

Fire Blazer April 21st, 2010 2:20 PM

Hacking lets you have your own game with your own fun and you can't complain much about the game because if you want something to be better then you should do it yourself!

Also, having other people play your hacks is a lot of fun too. ^_^
