How did you defeat Whitney?

miltank

Perhaps one of the most anticipated Pokémon in these games, and for good reason: it's got a history of kicking butt. There's a mixed bag about the "new Miltank." Some say that Whitney was a breeze, others say she's still horrific to take down. This thread isn't really about her toughness, though, it's about how you captured that Plain Badge.

Heard plenty of stories from people who were even prepared and still fell apart, and others of great, some funny, strategies to defeat her. That's where this thread was born, I wanna hear 'em. And hey, it might even help other trainers take her down too. :D

I'm interested in how people handled one of the most iconic leaders in this game. Of course, in HG/SS, there's a level drop compared to the original games, but that doesn't mean you failed to prepare, right?

tl;dr

How did you manage to beat Whitney? Good ol' haymaker style, a barrage of smokescreen and sand attack? Abuse of X items? Share your story, and yes, even your loss, if it happened. :D

Nick March 22nd, 2010 2:24 PM

Whitney, for me, is one of the most anticipated gym leaders in all the game...

Debatably, I find that Whitney is the most difficult gym leader to defeat in any of the Pokémon game releases. Coming to defeat her often takes a single strategy. Some people find that winging it works better than strategizing her defeat, but in most cases, once you lose to her you realize that you need to do something different with the way you handeled the battle. And it isn't the battle itself that's difficult; it's her Miltank.

As for my strategy defeating it - at first I thought it was to overpower it. So I faught it thinking nothing of it... and I lost. I didn't want to let that happen again, so I took advantage of my Flaaffy's static ability and used that as my key towards defeating her. With the chances of paralyzing her Miltank, I combined that strategy with overhauling X stats; special and speed. I did so in my battle with her Clefairy, which is what I believe was put there for the purpose of preparing for Miltank. Other than that, it's pretty pointless of a Pokémon.

I took the time to use my X special to be sure that my ThunderShock would do the trick. I used about six or seven of those and then took down the Clefairy. When Miltank came out, lucky me, it attacked and got hit with that static ability on the spot. I was surprised because of how lucky I was for that. Then, I used ThunderShock and it... fainted. Hell yeah! I think I managed to defeat it so easily based on luck, though. Thankfully, my Flaaffy was a female and the attract attack wouldn't be able to do anything against it. I think if it did that, I would have been done for considering most of the time attract makes it so I can't attack at all since I'm somehow ALWAYS immobilized by love.

shanecdavis March 22nd, 2010 2:29 PM

I haven't gotten there yet, but I plan to take her down quite easily with Machoke. I have always found Whitney to be quite easy to beat as I typically will either have a Fighting-type in my team or on of my Pokemon will have a Fighting move at their disposal. In all my time of playing Pokemon I have never lost to her (of course I haven't any of the other gym leaders either), so unless SS has made her unusually more difficult, I don't forsee any problems. I will let you know how it went down.

Gulpin March 22nd, 2010 2:32 PM

I honestly don't remember. I just went through the motions and beat her try one. I'm fairly sure I didnt use Cyndaquil/Quilava, but the rest of my team with fast speed and STAB moves.

Mika March 22nd, 2010 2:32 PM

I beat her in the face with a gyarados that was and still is female.

Attract did nothing and even when I faced that Clefairy of hers I didn't get to see that move or anything remotely terrifying [Can we say level 8 Adamant Growlithe beat down? Yes I do believe we can. :>] to tell you the truth. I really didn't struggle with her nearly as much as I did in Gen II. o.o She didn't even use Rollout. Not once. o.o; Just stomp. Over and over and over again. I did however flinch every sixth move. >> Which annoyed me. But eh. She died. I got the badge, I moved on.

比丽 March 22nd, 2010 2:40 PM

The first time I just whacked her Pokemon with a Geodude.
The second time (I started over before my 4th badge) I whacked her Pokemon with my Pidgetto and Croconaw. A lot of bites coming from Croconaw. Stupid Attract.

TheAppleFreak March 22nd, 2010 2:41 PM

I relied on burning her Miltank of doom. Even though Attract incapacitated me (doesn't help my team is all male), the burn damage eventually killed it.

It was great and infuriating when my Togepi Metronomed Horn Drill. It hit, but she was a higher level than it... ;_;

Muffin™ March 22nd, 2010 2:44 PM

Quilvava + Flame Wheel + Flaaffy + Thundershock + Critical hits + Tons of soft resetting :[ = Win

'Nuff said

TrinityLimit March 22nd, 2010 2:45 PM

well, i had a level 25 murkrow and i just sucker punch'ed and then superpowered it and she went down pretty fast...
the attract was very annoying though..

thedestinedblade March 22nd, 2010 2:49 PM

I did lose a couples a times to her, and her Attract screwed me over as well. (My party is all male. :/) That Onix that you can trade for a Bellsprout in Violet City is the only reason I won. Spam Harden and just quickly chip away at it's HP while waiting for the potion too. I was surprised she didn't spam Rollout as much as in the first game.

Benjamin510 March 22nd, 2010 2:51 PM

Simple Lost All My Pokes Except Onix, paralyzed It, I Used Rock Smash Alot Of Times But it Never Used Attract...

ryche March 22nd, 2010 2:59 PM

I can't remember how I did it, but it was in one try while cursing at that dang miltank for its constant healing and attract. My team is also all male, thought I was the minority when I figured I would roll around with an all male squad

Butterfree-Charizard March 22nd, 2010 3:01 PM

Well at the time my Quilava and Flaffy were way over powered like level 26 so I KOed it before it did anything to me.
Amazingly it was Bugsy that gave me trouble v=P

Guy March 22nd, 2010 3:07 PM

Whitney, for me, wasn't a Gym Leader who I focused all my attention on early in the part of the game. Which is why I never really had much of a Pokémon to challenge her with around the time of Azalea Town, nor did I have much plans to raise anything well enough to defeat Whitney and her Miltank with. I had plans to just go on full attack against her, knowing I would have somewhat of a difficulty and if I had lost the first time around, then I wouldn't have been surprised. Though extra training would have been in order afterward.

Luckily and unknowingly, I came across a Pokémon who would help me out against Whitney without much plan in using it at first. While in the search for an Aipom on my team in Azalea Town after defeating Bugsy, I came across a Heracross early. At first not having much plans to use it, I realized it would be a great powerhouse for future use and more specifically for Whitney - as she was my upcoming challenge. So, it wasn't long before I decided to use Heracross on my main team, as well as Aipom who I caught not too long after.

As for my battle with Whitney, I really didn't want to make it all easy with Heracross and his newly learned move, Brick Break, too early in the battle. So, I decided to use Aipom against her Clefairy as well as her Miltank in the end. Sadly, Aipom couldn't compete against her all too well after a few rounds. That's when I decided to send Heracross out and spam Brick Break on her. It was an easy defeat after a couple of turns, but the win was mine, along with the Plain Badge too. :D Her Miltank overall I would say is definitely a lot more challenging that before in Silver or Crystal. Simply because I find this game more strategic than past generation games - i.e. RBYG, GSC, FRLG, but yeah, it was still a fun match.

As for my toughest match to date, it would be against Morty ... but that's a different story. ^^;

chaos11011 March 22nd, 2010 3:10 PM

Charmeleon used Flamethrower on Clefairy. Then Milktank came out Bayleaf used reflec then switched to Flaaffy and Thunder waved (did a second thunder wave due to lum berry) then repeated thunder

Kww37 March 22nd, 2010 3:12 PM

I had a level 31 Feraligatr. All I used was Ice Fang three times, and that was that. Quite easy actually.

Eurydice March 22nd, 2010 3:17 PM

well i would always knock out her clefairy first but by the time i did that my stronger pokemon were weak so i decided i would use whirlwind to get the miltank out to defeat first and once i did that it was easy.

Astinus March 22nd, 2010 3:41 PM

I didn't have any Pokemon prepared to fight Whitney. I knew about her Miltank, the legends and myths of it flying around forums since HG/SS was announced. But I still didn't walk into the Gym with a Pokemon that had any super effective moves, or with any strategy in mind.

My Flaaffy fell easily to her. Attract was the downfall. It would be. 3/3 of my Pokemon were male. (Darn you, team nickname themes!) Plus, poor Flaaffy was just plain weak. He's not as strong as my other Pokemon.

Fortunately, my Raticate that keeps appearing in my posts is strong. He was sent out to avenge Flaaffy. But an Attract and a few Stomps nearly took down Raticate. He retreated, and my Croconaw was sent out as a sort of sacrifice to allow me to heal Raticate. (Croconaw didn't mind that strategy.) Raticate returned to the battlefield, full of the will to win, and he brought down that Miltank.

What also helped is that Whitney used the Super Potion on her Clefairy, so it was gone before Miltank appeared. Milk Drink, on the other hand, was a massive PITA.

BHwolfgang March 22nd, 2010 3:42 PM

Before I faced Whitney, I made sure that the Machop I received from that trade was going to evolve. So, I basically EV trained her till she became a Machoke. I then traded Muscle to one of my friend's Gen. IV game and got a Machamp back. It was my trump card, the leader of my party. During most of the battles that took place in the gym, I mainly used Machamp to annihilate everything in her path.

So, after about five minutes of destruction, I finally came to Whitney. Feeling a bit cocky, I played my Quilava first. Bad mistake. Clefairy metronomeWater Pulse and O.K'ed Quilava. Oh well, Machamp could take care of them with a snap. Besides, my other Pokemons need leveling up. So, I took out my Kadabra. Kadabra used Reflect, but the damn Clefairy countered it with a Encore. So, for multiple turns, the Clefairy used Doubleslap and Metronome to kill Kadabra. Okay, it's time to take the gloves off. I finally chose to play Machamp. Killing the Clefairy was a breeze, but Whitney threw out Miltank.

This is where it really began. Machamp used Karate Chop, and Miltank's HP was cut in half. Mind you, this was an Adamant, EV trained Machamp. Oh, and this special Machamp is a female. Huh, amazing. Anyways, Miltank tried a Milk Drink, and it worked. So, I kept on using Karate Chop till a critical hit finally came and took Miltank down to a red. For some stupid reason, instead of using Milk Drink again, the damn Miltank attacked Machamp with a stomp. I laughed, and used Karate Chop again to win the battle.

Dreadnought March 22nd, 2010 3:45 PM

With the Machop you can trade for a Drowzee in the Goldenrod department store, I really did not have any trouble with Whitney like I did back in Gen 2. Though that stomp and attract definitely were annoying to get past, however once you do, Whitney generally falls pretty fast.

Cow434 March 22nd, 2010 3:47 PM

MILK!!!!

Miltank is evil!

One move in particular i hate with intense passion: MILK DRINK!!!!

It's eeeeeevilllll!

But luckily with the help of a Machop (ar, sorry) I managed to take it down!

Phantom Kat March 22nd, 2010 3:48 PM

My Porygon2 wiped the floor with Miltank. :3

Being Genderless, it was immune to Attract. Using Conversion2, Porygon2 (Break) turned into a Steel-type, thus making Rollout almost uselsss. A couple of Confusions later, Miltank was beaten.

Yusshin March 22nd, 2010 3:49 PM

I was expecting a fight, but...

Two Magical Leafs and both of her Pokemon fainted. Chikorita was Level 25, Timid, not EV-trained, and holding a Miracle Seed.

In G/S/C, she was a demon, but she's considerably easier in HGSS... or perhaps I'm more dedicated.

CoffeeWolf March 22nd, 2010 3:54 PM

I beat her on my first try because I love to over-level, but she was the only gym leader to actually make my starter faint D:

Syphr March 22nd, 2010 3:54 PM

It's almost a necessity to have Flaafy for this gym, or a Geodude unless you transfer Pokemon.

I prepared my Flaafy ever since Violet City as a Mareep, but I did kinda..Leave my starter in the dust. It's level 7 I think, I beat the game and Only used it on my way to Violet City.

Ampharos is now 84 and modest.

swansong March 22nd, 2010 3:54 PM

Extremely high defense, a progressively self-strengthening rollout, immunity to male gender attacks, and self-healing abilities all make the match difficult, and she is by far the only difficult gym leader of any early Pokemon game.

What worked for me was using status ailments. Burning and poisoning through stalling. Sleep and paralysis to stall and use items. Also, there is a lady who sells herbal medicine in the tunnel - pick up plenty of it.

Skystrike March 22nd, 2010 3:55 PM

Thunder Wave + mULIPLE PKMN + Repeated Embers + 1 lvl up.

Works every time. =D

Oh yeah -- female pokemon FTW.

Calvo819 March 22nd, 2010 4:11 PM

honestly i had no trouble what so ever from her miltanks RollOout and Stomp which killed almost all my other friends party in their games. the only thing i had trouble with where the miltanks Defenses. my moves barely scratched it ._.

Panfisha March 22nd, 2010 4:20 PM

Have a heracross at lvl 19, and a few x-attacks(I used 2) and use them on clefairy, as it can't do anything to you unless it gets a lucky metronome attack. Then when miltank comes out, you can 2 hit it.

.little monster March 22nd, 2010 4:23 PM

I *just* beat her, out of pure luck. XD

I beat her with just a Level 23 Bayleef, I killed her Clefairy easily. Her Miltank..I hit it twice. Once, then the second time I got a critical hit and it died.

X3;

§acred†Beo! March 22nd, 2010 4:57 PM

Clefairy was easy with my Mareep... Then Miltank took out two of my pokemon until Hearcross/Brick break= KO'd Cow haha..

Eggie Poo Poo March 22nd, 2010 5:06 PM

Why am I the only one who beat her in my first try in less than 5-10 minutes? Because I had a Gastly that knew Hypnosis and Curse that really owned Miltank, then I just mass Water Gun'd it with Croconaw.

I Tried Voodoo Once March 22nd, 2010 5:15 PM

Lol, i taught one of my pokemon taunt and embargo and she never got a chance to use milk drink or potions...
then killing her with growlithe was a breeze

Kokuo March 22nd, 2010 5:20 PM

I used a ton of X items and managed to paralyze it with stun spore, and it fell fairly quickly.

.Gamer March 22nd, 2010 6:21 PM

Aipom used Tickle! (x6)
(switch to Heracross)
Heracross used Brick Break!
Whitney's Miltank Fainted.

BassFace March 22nd, 2010 8:27 PM

Attract didn’t pose an issue for me, since I had my Level 24, female Quilava handle the entire battle. It was weak against Rollout, but it had also just learned Defense Curl.
While Clefairy (who I didn't consider a threat compared to Miltank) was out, I used Defense Curl over and over to build up an armor defense in preparation for Miltank and its super-effective Rollout. When Miltank came out, I fired one Smokescreen after another at it. Thanks to Defense Curl, Rollout and Stomp did barely anything, and thanks to Smokescreen, nearly all of Miltank’s attacks missed. I eventually started laying on the Flame Wheel, and ended up burning Miltank twice (the first time, its Lum Berry healed it).
I thought I had it in the bag there, but then came the Milk Drink. That just made the battle drag on and on, and I was afraid I’d have to wait until Miltank ran out of PP for that move. Luckily, though, I got a critical hit at just the right time, knocking Miltank out before it could heal itself again.

Overall, Whitney was annoying, but not too much of a problem. Morty, on the other hand…

SIN1488 March 22nd, 2010 8:32 PM

She seemed really easy to me? We are talking about the second or third gym leader, right?

If so, she was easy, I had a Teddiursa and it's level must have been about 20-22, I think it gained a level during that battle so that's why I'm not completely sure. I just kept using facade, and she went down fast. Maybe because my Teddiursa was traded from Platinum, and was EV trained, and had a good nature?

donavannj March 22nd, 2010 8:37 PM

Honestly, I just beat every trainer I had access to up to that point before facing her for the first and only time. I opened with Quilava, switching over to my female Geodude when I realized Miltank was just going to spam Stomp. It spammed Stomp with flinch hax about 6 times after I sent out Geodude before I got a chance to finish it off by spamming Magnitude.

ChrisTom March 22nd, 2010 9:21 PM

Ah yes, Whitney, the eternal conundrum. She's sometimes even worse than F.E.A.R.

The best thing to do is simply be smart with your moveset and team early on in the game. When I did it in HeartGold I had a Totodile, Mareep, and a miscelany of lower level Pokemon. It turned out better than I thought though. It seems in Gen IV that Whitney goes moreso for Stomp than Rollout. Just be smart and simplistic with your move choices. When all else fails trade that one kid for a Machop.

rocky505 March 22nd, 2010 9:21 PM

She was easy for me. I just let my Quilava weaken it down (Shockingly it didn't ever use Milk Drink) Quilava fainted I switched in my Shiny Pichu and finished it off with a volt tackle.

Niprop March 22nd, 2010 9:29 PM

My trusty Porygon zapped that Miltank with Thunder, once for the paralyzing effect, and again for the bang!

Sammi March 22nd, 2010 9:31 PM

I went into the gym with what I thought would be a winning strategy:
1) Beat Clefairy.
2) Send out Geodude.
3) Have it beat the crap out of Miltank eventually.

What ended up happening was this:
1) Eventually sent out my Slowpoke against Clefairy
2) Used a few Curses
3) KO'd Clefairy (after it used Transform, that was kind of trippy)
4) Decided 'hey why not have Slowpoke stay until it faints?'
5) Miltank only used Stomp, and Slowpoke is still buffed up, has good attack, and Headbutt.
6) Slowpoke wins on the first try! 8D

I really had expected Whitney to give me tons of issues, but it was Morty that did, because none of my Pokemon could take a hit from Shadow Ball... that battle took real strategy to win. And by strategy I mean luck. :(

Barker March 22nd, 2010 10:16 PM

I sacrificed my Gastly to curse it. Then pretty much just toyed with it till it died.

R3D March 22nd, 2010 10:35 PM

Ah yes, Whitney...I was busy checking if the gym still looked like a clefairy lol.Umm, she beat me once.
I used the same strat as patch, used my team to kill her clefairy and once she killed most of my pokes,
I used my female flaffy and thunderwaved and thundershocked tha cow.
I was actually pretty disappointed considering how hard she was in the gold and silver version.

loliwin March 22nd, 2010 10:57 PM

I had a Graveler from a friend that held the Earthquake TM. It was Level 28 (It will obey you if you beat Bugsy). It evolved into a Golem! This is gonna wipe out lots of Pokemon, thats for sure. It was Male. :)

And so this is my battle against her...

I send out Golem....
She sends out Miltank....
She uses Stomp...
Golem took some damage!
:O:O:O:O:O:O

It didnt flinch. Too lucky.

Then my Golem used Earthquake.

Miltank just died.

I did defeat her other Pokemon, but they werent as hard as her Miltank. :)

Impo March 22nd, 2010 11:00 PM

i bet her with my hitmontop :P from pearl. was lvl 23 or something.
it was way harder in the old games :P

Brendonwii March 23rd, 2010 12:19 AM

Hmmm i beat her in december (when i got the game)
Well it was a fluke...

Opposite Day March 23rd, 2010 12:19 AM

Simply put, I used something that should never ever be used by anyone no matter how desperate they are - Disable Slowpoke XD That, combined with 5 or 6 Yawns, allowed me to prevent it from Stompflinching me, though Slowpoke didn't do too much damage - Whitney used both of her super potions on it, making the battle very VERY tedious and long. (Did I mention that my slowpoke has Oblivious? ;D )

I killed here in less than 3min with two Magical Leafs lol so you're not the only one; she was a wimp in comparison to my Chikorita Level 25.

shanecdavis March 23rd, 2010 2:35 AM

Okay, here is how it went down with my Lv17 Lonely Machop (Female):

Vs Clefairy
Turn 1: Machop uses Focus Energy, Clefairy uses Double Slap and hits FIVE TIMES!!!
Turn 2: Machop uses Karate Chop, Clefairy uses Grudge
Turn 3: Knowing I will lose all my PP with my next attack, Machop uses Low Kick to KO Clefairy

Vs Miltank
Turn 1: Miltank uses Stomp, Machop uses Karate Chop, Machop eats Sitrus Berry (thank you Pokewalker!)
Turn 2: Whitney uses Super Potion on Miltank, Machop uses Karate Chop
Turn 3: Whitney uses Stomp, Machop uses Karate Chop (CritHit) to KO Miltank

Machop gains 2 levels, Whitney cries, Shane shakes head expecting at least some kind of challenge and will have to use a lower level Machop or different Pokemon next time to try make it at least challenging. On to the next boring mono-type gym leader.

allBlue March 23rd, 2010 3:54 AM

I lol'ed at miltank with my golem, her rollout was hitting it for like 5hp. I decided to defense curl just for the hell of it and took it down with 1 hammer arm. :D Yeah I traded golem just for her otherwise her miltank would have been a nightmare >.<

X75flames March 23rd, 2010 4:57 AM

Uhhhmmm, I dont see whats going on, I one hit all her pokemon with my quilava :D

The only gym that was hard was Clair and her frigen dragons who resist fire! Lance also sucks XD

Benzee March 23rd, 2010 5:12 AM

On both Silver and SoulSilver, I didn't find the battle challenging at all. I beat her first try on Silver, SoulSilver Japanese, and SoulSilver English. On Soulsilver English and Japanese, I lowered Miltank's defense with Onix's screech. Since Onix is Rock, rollout doesn't affect it that much. So I lowered its defense 4 times or so with screech, then used Rock Throw twice. One of the easiest gym battles IMO.

Xine March 23rd, 2010 5:18 AM

female fighter + STAB'd move = pwn Miltank

i just spamming brick break with my female heracross (and miltank keep spamming milk drink) and got the badge easily ;D

Volkner's Apprentice March 23rd, 2010 5:44 AM

I haven't gotten to her yet, but I'll be sure to take a page out of Patchisou's book (I've got a female Mareep following me around) and use that strategy. It's funny because it's really the one point in the game where they slap you across the face for those of us who usually have all male teams.

Fire Wolf March 23rd, 2010 5:54 AM

It was really tough to beat that stupid cow >.<. I took Cyndaquil and it took me 8 attempts to beat it with my Flaffy, Poliwhirl, Quilava and Pidgeotto (:o half my team is weak to Rollout). I grinded a lot till I got all 4 to Lv. 26. Then, I lead with Quilava, who killed Clefairy easily with Ember. Then came the dreaded Miltank. I Embered while Rollout OHKO'd. Next was Pidgeotto. It Quick Attacked while Miltank OHKO'd. Surprisingly, then Flaffy somehow survived one Rollout after it Thundershocked it and paralyzed it. Another Thundershock meant the end of that cow. I was dancing after that XD

SnowpointQuincy March 23rd, 2010 5:58 AM

She was the only gym leder to beat me. I had to level up and come back later. Clair was also difficult, but she didn't win like this one did.

metapod23 March 23rd, 2010 5:59 AM

My two main Pokémon in HeartGold right now are Cyndaquil and Furret - both lower level 20s (22-24) and both female. I just beat Whitney last night - the first time I challenged her I lost - I didn't realize Cyndaquil would get pwned so bad by stomp.

So the second time I switched strategies. I had Furret take our her Clefairy, then went with Cyndaquil to start the battle against Furret. Cyndaquil didn't do much except to get a smokescreen off to lower its accuracy. I think it might have gotten burned, but the Lum Berry of course healed it and Cyndaquil was taken out.

So I left it up to Furret. I started by abusing defense curl. By the time I was done Stomp only did like 6 damage or something. I healed Furret with some water, and used a combination of Fury Swipes and Quick Attack. Furret was faster than Miltank, so with that advantage I was able to take it out - I think when Miltank got fairly low on HP I went with Fury Swipes and got a critical hit on one of them so that it didn't have a chance to use Milk Drink.

Gary Oak FTW March 23rd, 2010 6:07 AM

flaffy+thunder wave+quilava+smokescreen+a lot of potions=A crying little girl

Kobold Asylum March 23rd, 2010 6:21 AM

She kept milking so I kept running Flame Wheel and Lava Plume from my Typhlosion. She was actually quite easy.

rockman0 March 23rd, 2010 6:25 AM

I used an Onix that I traded in-game. Just used Rock Smash a couple of time and beat her on my first try.

hedgehog1128 March 23rd, 2010 9:56 AM

I never played Gold and Silver the first time around, so I had no idea she was coming. She stomped my team to death the first go around. Beat her the second time very easily though. I put my Gastly out and used curse on the Miltank. Next move the Gastly was out for the count, but the curse stayed (through several full restores and heals even, which is helpful). After that the rest of my team was able to handle it, no problem.

560cool. March 23rd, 2010 10:37 AM

May the fatcow come down and be kicked !

I didn't have any strategy ! ^^ I rawred my way with a Pidgeotto and a Quilava . Thing is , I was lucky : Rollout never streaked more than two ! :)

Looking forward to more luck in Pokemon HearGold Version : The ROM (until I get my game) ...

billios March 23rd, 2010 10:50 AM

as HG/SS isn't out in the UK yet(RAWR!) i haven't faced her in 4th gen, in the original silver, however it took me a good three or four tries, i can't remember exactly how as it has been AGES sinse i've played silver

Poliwagged March 23rd, 2010 11:00 AM

Lv19 Croconaw
Lv18 Furret
Lv16 Togepi

It really really sucks when Croconaw's bite and Furret's headbutt do [-] that much damage with miltank's [---------------------] HP bar.

Milk drink, stompflinch*****, and attract. MY GOD ATTRACT AAAAAAAAAH.

Heart Gold March 23rd, 2010 11:47 AM

I beat her Cleffairy with my Growlithe, then she sent out Miltank which killed my Gastly. Then after that she killed my Growlithe... my Bayleef 2HKO'd her with only taking 10 damage.

Masara March 23rd, 2010 12:16 PM

Let's see...
Whitney's first Pokeyman was fairly easy; my female Croconaw used Bite once or twice and Clefairy died just like that.
Then it was Flaaffy versus Miltank. After struggling a bit, I put Miltank to sleep by using my Togetic's Yawn (thankfully, the Miltank had already used up its Lum Berry when it was Thunder Waved by Flaaffy).

Once Miltank was asleep, I switched out to my Flaaffy again and just spammed Thunder. Whitney just HAD to use her Super Potion, but I won in the end anyway 'cause Miltank was still sleeping. :B

This was all on my first try, so I was pretty lucky happy.

MadaraUchiha. March 23rd, 2010 12:46 PM

First time: Stomp,Flinch,Stomp,Flinch,I hit,Milk Drink,Stomp, until I lose
Second Time: Same as first but less flinch and I win
First Time after Reset: Lemme just say... I miss Gen II Whitney.. My level 19 Machop solo'd her team other then 40 hp of Miltank which Dratini took care of.... No roll out = Miltank sucks.

Bluerang1 March 23rd, 2010 1:00 PM

Is she THAT hard? I just love how people talk about her like this :D

rizyq March 23rd, 2010 1:02 PM

Lol, I came into the gym, faced all the other trainers, and I went and healed. I come back, remembering the trouble I originally had with her (In Gen 2) and all of the stories I've heard.

I don't remember exactly how it happened. But, I beat her clefairy, easy. Then milktank. I think it attracted one or two of my pokemon, and I got a hit or two on it... Then Rollout, I think two hit my Flaaffy, KOing it, then I sent out Pidgeotto, to get a quick attack, it got Rolloutted. Then (It was probably at like half health then) I sent out Croconaw, and it took it out in a turn or two. It had no chance to use Milk Drink because of rollout 5 turns/a miss.
I guess I got lucky... Cause rollout didn't miss.

Heart's Soul March 23rd, 2010 1:02 PM

I got her poisoned with Nidorino and kept using Double Kick. Each turn lost her 40% HP but she kept on healing, but PSN helped me. She used Rollout once, got poisoned, healed, used a second time, poisoned AGAIN, and then missed. Wow.

Xebelleon March 23rd, 2010 1:11 PM

Granbull (female) used Thunder Wave. Granbull used Close Combat.

Miltank fainted. ^__^

An Imperialist named Dak March 23rd, 2010 1:24 PM

Get a pokemon with a stat booster (weepinbell/slowpoke, etc).
Spam stat booster on clefairy
faint clefairy
faint miltank
the end

or just dont scrub it up.

JustinDestruction March 23rd, 2010 1:38 PM

After two thunder waves, four sand attacks, and a myriad of other random attacks... I believe I even used leer on her... my Nidorino was able to double kick it into oblivion. It was still somewhat annoying.

Crazy Caveman March 23rd, 2010 1:40 PM

omg ya i think i lost to her about 6 times then i just got a lot of health potions to help me out

Heart's Soul March 23rd, 2010 1:47 PM

Also, if you think Whitney is hard, you're not ready for Clair. It took me, the same one try, to beat her but I used over 15 revives just against her.

Unknown Entity March 23rd, 2010 1:52 PM

She didn't give me any trouble at all, I easily took her out, my Nidorina smashed her to pieces. =\

sdc10 March 23rd, 2010 1:52 PM

I lvl my gastly and abra until each one evolved, then i grinded them both to lvl 25, it was pretty easy after that.

Chaos Feraligatr March 23rd, 2010 1:56 PM

okay this was very annoying for me because here is my story:
I headbutted a tree to get a Heracross,I got one it was at lvl.5 trained it to lv.21 assured win right?wrong.I beat her clefairy with one Brick break and when i got to Miltank it went downhill,i did brick break did about half, and it used accursed stomp and i flinched every single time!so heracross went down and i relied on Golbats confuse ray and flaffys thundershock and won still on my first try annoying though. =)

Kristine March 23rd, 2010 2:16 PM

I didn't have a single problem with Whitney; I defeated her using my Cyndaquil, Sandshrew, and Togepi. I just defeated Clair, the 8th gym leader, and am doing the challenge in the Dragon's Den currently. I didn't have any problems with pretty much any of the gym leaders. :|

linkinpark187 March 23rd, 2010 3:01 PM

Machop and Karate Chop/Low Kick. I only had to reset once, thankfully. And it's more because I got frustrated when Stomp made Machop flinch everytime it hit.

Sudeki March 23rd, 2010 3:07 PM

Don't really see whats too hard about her, I remember back in the day she was really annoying when she would get a rollout spree going, and each time you would switch in it would just Ko your team. But this one was disapointing, all she did was stomp my pokemon, which didnt do much but flinch it every once in awhile >_<.

Steezz March 23rd, 2010 3:31 PM

Man, Whitney was a pain. I realized that Quilava, Pidgeotto, and Bellsprout werent good enough. So i went and cought myself a Nindoran, Evolved in into Nidorino, and double kicked Miltank to death :D

TheGearofWar March 23rd, 2010 3:33 PM

Bayleef knew Reflect.

That's gg.

SCV058 March 23rd, 2010 3:35 PM

To beat Miltank, I paralyzed it, then cut its attack with growl, then destroyed its defense with leer. The best way is to just cut it down bit by bit.

Saltare. March 23rd, 2010 3:48 PM

I had to buy a bunch of potions before I challenged Whitney again. Because my PCP wouldn't obey me, and all my other pokemon were boys. So my Spikey-Eared Pichu was the only girl. So I just kept using Volt Tackle...and potions...

Silhouette March 23rd, 2010 4:56 PM

I only had a Togepi, an Oddish, and a Spearow (the Kenya one) at this point, and it was hell. I won on my first try, but I had to totally spam Stun Spores on that cow of hers, because of the 75% accuracy and that friggin' Lum Berry. :P Eventually took it down with my Togepi's Serene Grace hax (lolExtrasensory).

nidorina March 23rd, 2010 5:01 PM

That miltank is brutal. I lost to Whitney twice before I finally decided to suck it up and get a Machop. It really came down to luck for me. She didn't use any potions or refresh its health at all, which helped. It missed just when I needed it to, and I won. I was about to smash my DS at some points though. That thing's stomp is infuriating. (So is its attract... it's ugly....)

Distortion World March 23rd, 2010 5:09 PM

Luckily, one of my Pokemon was a Meowth, with Egg Moves Hypnosis and Slash.

That's how I defeated her XD.

Xtrude March 23rd, 2010 5:39 PM

Sent out my Quilava to deal with the first Pokemon, then changed to my other 5 crap Pokemon, slowly taking down her accuracy and defence etc.

Then with the Miltank on low health, smashed in two hits by my Quilava :P

GoldvsRed March 23rd, 2010 5:48 PM

Whitney was a breeze for me, but Chuck... GAWD. Four tries to beat that dang Poliwrath... Anywho, I guess I just beat Whitey out of sheer luck. Whitney's Miltank never used Rollout against me, at all, but Stomp got on my nerves. It never even used Milk Drink! I guess it was sheer luck.

hcoteen2008 March 23rd, 2010 6:09 PM

I used the Onix that was traded to me and leveled it up and used it's attack. Luckily I was able to paralyze it with my Pikachu-colored Pichu right before it fainted.

Lt_Nite March 23rd, 2010 11:13 PM

I was prepared because of my childhood being destroyed by her in the originals. I basically growled it to death adn then widdled away at it's HP until it was done, adn stalled it's PP.

CrashSmAshley March 23rd, 2010 11:21 PM

For me it was pretty easy. I had Nidorina with me at the time and just used fighting attacks on her. Nidorina knew double kick and rock smash.

ssjkiego March 23rd, 2010 11:31 PM

Go Max!(Crocanow lv 21)Rage after rage after rage i know out clefairy
she sends out the tank...i recall for Scout(Furret).

Focus blast!
Super effective
Critical!

Whitney starts to cry! i feel awesome ;)

vibratingcat March 24th, 2010 3:40 AM

i was actually surprised on how easy it was to beat her.
I remember it always been hard with my quilava and her using roll out on me in the original...
But this time i didnt even need to think while fighting her and thus i dont remember how i did it.

Editman March 24th, 2010 4:03 AM

I agree, There happens to be Two Gym leaders that I've never beaten on the first try Whitney and the other being Wattson. (I have a wing it strategy)

I started off using Bayleef, against her Clefairy,i did a sunny day attack to ready my solarbeam, and what do you know, her Clefairies Metronome is overheat. She then rolled to victory over my team, that is until Totodile evolved and learned ICe fang, then i was able to just "Throw it in the bag" lol the battle i mean.

orange discontent March 24th, 2010 4:19 AM

I beat her after maybe one or two resets, but jesus my Pokemon are always insanely underleveled. And I thought that a level 13 Pidgeotto was ridiculous...

I can guarantee that
about half of you just shivered.
(as 55% of PC, according to another poll, chose Cyndaquil) Perhaps one of the most anticipated Pokémon in these games, and for good reason: it's got a history of kicking butt. There's a mixed bag about the "new Miltank." Some say that Whitney was a breeze, little do they mention how they expected her tactics this go around, others say she's still horrific to take down.

I had a female Bayleef Lv. 26 with Poison Powder which I used to stall the Miltank out. However, it did get a critical hit on me towards the end so I had to send in my Slowpoke then switch out to Sandshrew as death fodder so the poison would finish her off and so my Slowpoke would get some experience.

Whitney wasn't difficult, although Scrappy really caught some of my friends off guard. =P Chikorita wins, yet again.

Bolanboy March 24th, 2010 8:14 AM

Very easily. Level 23 Quilava with Fire Blast destroyed every trainer in that gym including that Miltank. 2-hits.
