And that's the story of prof oak.

I remember the first time I saw Prof. Oak in Gold Version, the very first thing that came to mind was "What are the odds ?"

Haha, that is awesome.

I always figured that between the time from the original games and Gold/Silver, there wasn't any easy access between these regions, so professors in each regions said that only the natural inhabitants of that region were the number of Pokemon there were. Once the S.S. Aqua and the Magnet Train came into existance and connected Johto and Kanto, it was decided that they should combine all of the Pokemon into one big group of 251. However, this doesn't explain why we didn't know about the Pokemon in Generations III-V (although I guess anyone that can't remember their own grandson's name is getting pretty senile, and probably shouldn't even be in a position to be a Pokemon professor :P)

I'm gonna go with either old, crazy, or time.

It's not his fault... he always has a stack of Max Repel handy. After all, he IS tremendously busy.

coconutberry April 12th, 2010 6:30 AM

Maybe he knew of the other Pokemon, but didn't tell Red because it would be too much for him, and he didn't want to hurt his mind. :3

Kobold Asylum April 12th, 2010 6:36 AM

Perhaps since he only caught three pokemon, the 151 pokemon he knew exsisted were the most common from gens 1 - x.

Um... Whut...

It was on the other day and the pokemon is quite clearly the Celebii and not a Bellosom.

Your eyes fail.

FalconsDrummer April 12th, 2010 9:41 AM

In the game plotline, Professor Oak had not yet been to Johto when he said there were 151 Pokémon. Especially since, when the game designers made him say that, Generation II didn't even exist yet. Jeez.

I don't think the creators had any idea how much the Pokemon Franchise would take off so I don't think they were ever planning sequels. But what would I know right?

Another way I try to look at it like is this: Time has passed since r/b/y and since that adventure the professor had stumbled upon the other region. Then again, this is just my opinion.

They planned the 2nd Generation from the beginning if I recall: it's the later generations that were a bit of a surprise.

That seems like the opinion that makes the most sense... note I said "most." As far as I see, there's no theory that makes 100% sense, so maybe I'll just pick the old and crazy idea :P

pokecrazy123 April 25th, 2010 8:12 AM

Prof. Oak is not a trainer. Trainers are the ones who explore wild grass. Prof. Oak never explored the grass because he thought 151 was it. Every Pokemon. Why would you explore iif you thought you had explored everything already?

Correction, he is not a trainer ANYMORE.
he does say in the beggining of the games that he used to be a trainer

EmeraldSerenade April 25th, 2010 12:20 PM

Hey, Prof. Oaks pretty old! Cut the guy some slack xD

Yep, indeed, he use to be a pokemon trainer.

This.

It also interests me how Oak has a radio show broadcasted exclusively in Johto that's about the locations of Johto pokemon.

Oak just straight-up lied to Red && Blue. Jerk. =PP

I personally think he was saying there are 151 Pokemon in Kanto.

GlitchCity May 1st, 2010 3:45 PM

Pro. Oak is too engrossed with his poems to notice anything new, until someone comes up to his face and shove their "newly discovered" pokemon lol.

Best answer so far.

Anyway, I just assume he never told the protagonist (Red) of RBY about the Pokémon in Johto. He sent his grandson & Red out on a quest in Kanto to collect data on every Pokémon. Maybe he did that because he was so busy communicating back and forth with his colleagues in Johto about the Pokémon there that he didn't have time to go out and get field data on everything in Johto? Kanto was a test to make sure his Pokédex worked and once he had a complete listing there, he decided to start the process again in Johto. :>

Another thing I found out. SOme guy named Chad called me and told me that Prof. Oak and Kurt the freakin Pokeball maker go way back. WAAAYYYY BACK. Not only was Prof. Oak in kahootz with Prof. Elm, but he knew Kurt too!
