Sorta Like A Sandwich

I lied, it's nothing like a sandwich.
When I'm not cursing at Bidoofs, I'm a full time art student, and I occasionally use any school-fueled motivation for non-school work. I'm 99% traditional, personal preference, but my scanner is like....I dunno, the GameBoy Color of scanners, so I never really use it.
I plan on updating the new thread with anything I do, though balancing it with physical therapy and "oh yeah I have three overdue papers" nights means I can't promise those updates will be regular. I'm also painstakingly shy when it comes to my work. (b' ')b

Pokémon ACEOs, approx. 2.5"x3.5" -- Umbreon, Ampharos, Chingling, Kecleon

A friend's Exalted (tabletop RPG) character, approx. 14"x17"

An original character/design initially done for a contest, approx. 8.5"x11"

Uh, a still life painting from last semester? Hurrrr?

icycatelf April 5th, 2010 7:08 PM

Woah, you're quite the artist. Great stuff!

I wish I was that good with traditional media.

.hack April 5th, 2010 7:11 PM

Sexy drawings :3

xD
The sole reason I clicked this thread.

shookie April 6th, 2010 10:06 AM

:D!
Akiyuki - Considering the fact that anything digital is foreign to me, I equally envy those that are good at digital work(s).
.hack - Sorry for misleading you, but I plan on doing something sandwich-esque in the near future :P

All I have for now are some school projects that I wanted to get a snapshot of before I turn them in...
My Drawing class project (dealy) is to draw candy, which I've been doing on the side as a break from our much much larger project. Unfortunately it has to be in color so I can't turn in this one, but I might sell it in our art show. Pencils on 14"x17" Bristol.

omg you'll never guess what candy it is!

aaand this is for my Lettering class, an abstract assemblage of letters in various scripts/typefaces. I used every letter, upper- and lowercase, at least once. Pen and marker on, uh, legal-sized paper.

Zirkle38 April 7th, 2010 2:08 PM

Ooooh. Pretty pictures OwO -drools-
I'm very partial to that Keckleon :D
I know you're probably not looking for critiquing, but the "A friend's Exalted (tabletop RPG) character" person picture thing's arm with the staff seems too straight. Not... organic enough. A person would be uncomfortable with that.
Sorry! I just couldn't help it. But it's much better than anything I could ever do, well that's not saying much, but it still gets 10/10 (:
And on the last pitchure, is there numbers, too? Or am I mixing up my alphabet?

Critiques are fine by me!
The sketch I had for that piece ended up looking a lot better than the final picture...I somehow managed to royally screw up the anatomy on it when I made it bigger. I'm actually glad you pointed that out, it means I'm slightly less neurotic about it than I thought I was >_>

Nope, just letters, but since it's a picture taken with my webcam it's mirrored which probably makes things look off.

Zirkle38 April 7th, 2010 3:21 PM

Okay, it was just no one had said anything about that, so I was afraid I'd be out of line. I think I worry too much ^-^;
I see. Probbly just some B's that look like threes and P's or g's that look like sixes or nines,
Wonderful art, though. I wish I was that talented. Then I wouldn't feel like I let my art teacher down when my final project was due. It was a painting on a cinder block in the school, a very cool idea if everyone that went there was an artist, and it wasn't half as good as I'd hoped. She picked my block's spot and said "Here, where everyone can see, because you're one of my best artists," or something to that effect. No pressue x-x
Err, sorry about the rambling. Seems I do that a lot these days,

Specifically the chest area bothers me just given that it looks like it expands way beyond where the arm connects to the body. Also the head seems like its cover the neck a bit too much, almost like the head is rotating on an axis of it own.

Your work is looking really good though, maybe try a few different styles of drawing, as you seem to have your own style down pretty well.

Pretty much everything on that picture is wrong anatomy-wise, haha. I'm not trying to make excuses or anything, I'm just already aware that there's some stuff there that bothers me. Her chest, for example, sticks out too far on the left for where her breasts would be, which looks even more awkward with her really stiff arm. It was also one of the first times I'd drawn a human in that position, and it was hard to find references or use myself as one.
Anyway, I really do appreciate the critiques and I'd go back and fix it if I could, which I can't do since the original is in New Orleans with the character's owner, and fixing traditional pieces is really annoying. I'll definitely keep a better eye on my anatomy for next time, though.

I've also been trying to do exercises to work on different styles if I don't have anything else to do, it's just boring sketches and stuff I don't normally share unless it's important. ;P

Why thank you!

Just another quick ACEO I did today, of Hellboy, mostly as an inking test. I ended up getting frustrated with my shaky hand(s) and stuck with my trusted pens.

Mason69 April 15th, 2010 3:02 AM

Loved your drawings!
Congrats!

shookie April 21st, 2010 12:35 PM

Mason - Thank you! :)

More school stuff, unfortunately, it's all I've been spending art-energy on.
This is part of the final project for my Drawing class, which is basically a recreation of a picture of a car. I chose the 1966 Batmobile, couldn't think of how I wanted to color it, so I went with construction paper and colored pencils. The right/back half of it is what I've done so far.

shookie May 2nd, 2010 5:04 PM

Not only is it a WIP, but it's school stuff too. Again. >_>
Sorry that the quality of the second one is terrible.

Ashe~ May 2nd, 2010 5:28 PM

You've done a great job with your art.

Your pokemon as well as anime characters look fabulous. :)

ForeLegend May 3rd, 2010 5:12 PM

Really nice! I really like the Ampharos, Kecleon, and the still life painting, I really like the coloring + Shading on both drawings, is that Kecleon's tongue next to him (The purple streaming thing :paranoid:), sorry if i'm wrong.

shookie May 4th, 2010 8:00 AM

@ Ashe: Thank you! You also have an awesome name, I loved Ashe in XII.
@ Fore: It actually isn't, but that was my original idea. They're nothing more than like...eyebeams, I guess. The scanner didn't really pick up on the rest of it, it looks something like this:

But since I'm thinking about the ACEOs right now, I've had the idea of doing a few more with the legendaries and/or Eeveelutions once school's settled down a little bit.

And also speaking of school, I finished my car project:

Okami Chi May 4th, 2010 8:08 AM

Man your art is great. I'm a cartoonist, so I really can't draw anything that's serious. Anyways, nice work!

shookie May 9th, 2010 6:20 PM

@ Okami - Thanks! :D

I feel lame for only posing school work, but until finals are over that's all I have time for :(
Anyway here's my final for my Drawing class, some candy done in colored pencil, marker and some Pro White.

shookie May 24th, 2010 7:19 AM

Bumping for great justice :o
I also drew my friend's WoW character, a night elf druid, because she's a really good friend of mine aaand I've been meaning to do WoW fanart. It's a little weird that I quit WoW two months ago and in the two years I played I never made any fanart, but once I quit I did...huh. Whatever.

I also have more Pokémon stuff in the works, once I finish another friend's character I'll start working on it.

Alkaide May 24th, 2010 11:30 PM

They are just fab.

You are a real paint artist.

Some are reeeally well done.

*liked 'em*

Danikamakaze May 25th, 2010 12:29 AM

I love the way you use the colours, and not just one colour all solid like.
I also love the way you make simple yet effective backgrounds for some of the pieces,
but like Zirkle pointed out, that looks kind of unnatural heh.
I tracked down a website that might be helpful to you, I'll list it at the bottom.
What it is, is a figure drawing website, what you do is get a cheap-ass notebook, preferably a4 size, get and old pencil and just try as quick as you can to draw a figure - nothing precise, no features, just body and it should loosen you up and then subconsciously while you begin to put a piece together you'll create more comfortable positioning with the figure (: OH and the figure changes every 30 seconds so be prepared :P

http://www.posemaniacs.com/pose/thirtysecond.html

Hope you don't mind my critique o: n_n"

shookie May 25th, 2010 7:28 AM

Nah I don't mind critique, and I actually loooooove Posemaniacs :o I just haven't had the time/focus to sit down lately and do the exercises. /lazy

shookie June 13th, 2010 4:54 PM

Oh yeah, this thing.

Another friend's WoW character.

More WoW fanart, which involves a long explanation that I don't feel like getting into. Really it's just an inside joke with the old druid forums (when I was able to post).

Spent like...three weeks-ish on this, on and off. His arm looks really weird to me, I think his forearm is too short. :/ It's my OC Edgar and his cat, Sir Gerald Winston, hanging out in Edgar's suave bachelor pad.

shookie June 22nd, 2010 12:22 PM

bumpa bumpa

Eeveelution buttons! :)

I'll be selling these at Connecticon next weekend.

mr. ck June 22nd, 2010 8:39 PM

You made those buttons?
Wow they're awesome :)

And the artwork on the first page, I loved it too.
My favourite was the Chingling in the first post :D

Indeed I did :) I have my own button machine (two, in fact).

Thank you, and Chingling is one of my favorites too :D

sneezel June 25th, 2010 12:48 AM

I love the colors here, especially with the Pokemons. They look like they could be made into screensavers or something haha. But the anatomy does need work as you acknowledged already, but that can be fixed with many many anatomical drawing practices. Nonetheless, I love how you have the patience to complete drawings like this, good job :D

.Kaiser June 25th, 2010 1:01 AM

I feel out of my wheelie chair dude. This is of the effin hook!

shookie June 25th, 2010 10:17 AM

@Sneezel: Thank you :) one thing I'm trying to work on is being more "anal" about things being perfect, including anatomy.

@Kaiser: lolll you have the same name as one of my OCs, and thank you!

shookie June 27th, 2010 3:54 PM

I made a ton of mistakes on this for me to like it too much, but meh. Two original characters of mine from a project I've been working on for ~5 years:

Actual Pokémon fanart, this time a (shiny) Marshtomp:

shookie July 1st, 2010 7:54 PM

I told a friend of mine that every time I do Pokémon fanart, a bit of my soul dies...which pretty much means I have no soul left at this point.

Hypno:

Sudowoodo with maracas:

Jolteon, also seen in my signature:

Entei, which I literally just finished after three hours (x_x):

♣Gawain♣ July 2nd, 2010 4:13 AM

I'm very jealous that you can paint, I'm only limited to sketching and coloring and digital arts(like mine). Painting is the master's style of expressing his/her emotions and what's on his/her mind(in that case I'm not a full master).

By the way, nice artwork. All of them especially the buttons and the evil wolf from WoW that fired the mathematical equations from doom!

shookie July 13th, 2010 7:16 AM

Well I am jealous of those that can do digital work, since I'm pretty terrible at it. I'm going to try to work on getting better at it though :P
Thank you for the comments though :)

Speaking of painting! I compiled all of the paintings I've done from the last two semesters into one huge picture.
Spoiler:
http://www.vggeebrgr.com/art/200910oilp.jpg
A. Cone/square/cylinder in black and white
B. Reflective/shiny surfaces, glass
C. Plain ol' still life, first one in color (unfinished)
D. Black and white boxes - my oldest
E. All blue objects
F. All black objects, no black paint used
G. Fabric - most recent
H. Objects with a colored lightsource (unfinished)

They're all done with oil paints on various sizes of canvas board.

I didn't get a chance to take pictures of the many badges I did over the weekend, unfortunately. After I finish a commission I may do some Pokémon art at the urging of a friend of mine.
