Platinum or Heart Gold, which do you like more?

I bought Heart Gold recently, and while it's a good game it doesn't have that 'fresh' feel at all and it's waaaaaay too easy. I know the game has to sell to the younger audience, but come on now, I just beat Blue and at this point I've only 'fainted' 3 times through out the entire game.

I'm just wondering, as I haven't played the D/P/Pt series yet, how good are they? How would you compare them to HG/SS? Which did you like better?

Zackraa April 13th, 2010 9:50 AM

Platinum is a much tougher game than Heart Gold, Platinum even has a Final Fantasy feel to it you'll see what I mean as you play through the game.

ILoveDragonite April 13th, 2010 10:08 AM

The elite four in platinum is alot more fun, like alot. I enjoyed platinum more but....heart gold and soul silver are very fun to.

shookie April 13th, 2010 10:25 AM

I like them both for their own reasons.
SoulSilver (HeartGold) is fun when you look at things like having Pokémon follow you around and being able to revisit Kanto. I don't have Gold/Silver/Crystal so the whole game felt pretty new to me.
I still think I'd prefer Platinum over it, because it doesn't feel as rushed as SS/HG did. I'm only ~53 hours into SS and I've already gotten all 16 badges and am currently training up for Red, but at the same time in Platinum, I was maybe halfway through with the gyms. I also like the whole Sinnoh Underground thing and the Pokétch. Really, as petty as it sounds, I don't like SS because the PC system really really bugs me. It feels like it takes three times longer than the PCs in Platinum.

That's a legitimate complaint, the menu transitions in Heart Gold are waaaayyy too slow and really bug me sometimes.

I just completed Heart Gold (All 16 badges and beat the Elite 4 the 2nd time) in around 53-54 hours. Heart Gold as a whole just felt old to me, even though they redesigned a lot of things the worlds were very uninteresting. I beat the Elite 4 the 2nd time and my team was WAAAAY under leveled. My highest level pokemon was level 60 and I whooped on everyone, even Lance with his level 75 Dragonite. It's a joke how easy the game is.

I'm somewhat disappointed. I hope that Platinum is better. I watched my sister play Diamond and just the feel of the game sparks my interest better than Heart Gold did, it was just uninteresting to me. It has the Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald feel to it and I LOVED those games.

Also is it possible to battle someone from Diamond if you are on Heart Gold?

Chaos Rush April 13th, 2010 5:22 PM

Platinum, definitely. HeartGold/SoulSilver is too easy, and the Johto Pokemon are very poorly presented, seeing as 98% of the trainers in Johto use Kanto Pokemon. Even with the extra region included, it's still shorter than Platinum.

By the time I reached the Elite Four in Platinum, I had 70 hours clocked up. Right now in HeartGold, I have 14 badges, and I only have 50 hours clocked up. So Platinum has more replay value, even though HG/SS has 2 regions.

Also the storyline is much better in Platinum. In Platinum, it actually feels like you have this great epic journey to go through, and you have to defeat this menacing group of villains, and the climax is awesome. In HeartGold, it's just... meh. Team Rocket isn't menacing at all, I mean, seriously, in the climactic fight of the storyline in HG/SS, you fight a guy with a Lv35 Houndour (plus Koffing and Houndoom). In the climactic fight of the storyline in HG/SS, you fight a menacing emo guy with a Lv46 Gyarados, along with more high-leveled Crobat, Houndoom, Honchkrow, and an IMO, very tough Lv48 Weavile. Archer is pathetic compared to Cyrus. Cyrus is actually trying to control time and space, while all Archer wants to do is contact his old buddy. Because Cyrus is a lot tougher, it feels more of an accomplishment to defeat him.

Yes of course, every main series 4th Gen game is battle & trade compatible with one another

BusterTheFox April 13th, 2010 8:18 PM

Hmm...this seemed like a stupid idea for a thread at first, since first of all, it didn't mention SoulSilver, the better of the two, in it's thread title. ;) And also because I think HG/SS is better so far. BUT, then I read some of the comments, and most of them are very good points.

For one thing, I also hate the new PC system. It seems like I'm always switching between the touch screen and buttons. They don't have it organized well at ALL. Aside from that, the music is awesome, the graphics are nice, and there are some new story elements and areas to visit.

I haven't beaten either(In SS I'm trying to beat Chuck, while in Pt I'm trying to beat Volkner), since my DS broke, but so far, as story is concerned, Platinum was WAY better. But, that's not the only thing to consider.

In HG/SS, you also have the Poke-athlon. I mean, some people may take that for granted, but if you have any idea how much time and effort the developers must've put into it, it's pretty dang huge in itself. Not to mention, those little games are pretty fun, too. HG/SS also hosts the return of the ever-loved Battle Frontier, right where the old Battle Tower used to be in Crystal.

In Pt, we get Looker. woo. Personally, I think he's REALLY annoying. In HG/SS, we get the return of Eusine. He's less annoying.
Lastly, the Giratina battle music in Pt is so darn cool...I mean, it's fast, it's scary, it doesn't use the same kind of musical style as the rest of the music in the game(Anyone else notice the musical repetition in all the pokemon games? in RSE we got a lot of "Bum, Bumbum. Bum, Bumbum". XD). I saved right before him and replayed that battle five times before I finally caught him with the master ball. It's really too bad I don't get to do it again. D=

vibratingcat April 13th, 2010 10:34 PM

i just got the hard copy of platinum and am enjoying it quite a lot! i like both games for differant reasons so its kinda hard to choose which is better. But it feels alot better to play HGSS before u play platinum. i feel i apreciate both games more. like some rare pokemon in hgss is easily obtainable in platinum like sudowoodo. it also feels like ur continuing from HGSS in a way, with being able to capture the 3rd and 4th gen pokemon easily.
if i had to choose between either, i would say hgss is the better of the 2 as my favourite series is 2.

Destiny Bond April 13th, 2010 11:13 PM

Definately Platinum 4 the win! However, I feel that many others preffer Heart Gold

The Girl Once named Tracie April 14th, 2010 7:11 AM

I liked Platinum A LOT more than Heartgold (not that I didn't like it) for many reasons.

For one, I was completely done with Heartgold (Red and all) after a mere 15 hours. Those 15 hours were a fun 15 hours, but it was too short to be worth the extra cost of the game.

Platinum had soooo much more stuff it it - a seaside resort, a distrotion world, a city covered in snow, portals you pulled the legendaries out of... just so much more than Johto did. The extra region did make me smile, but not for long.

Johto was also fun because you could catch many different pokemon - it's the first game where you can catch a starter in the wild! (if you count the pokewalker as part of the game) and Larvitar, Gible, Riolu, Metang, and so many others are out there at level 40 and higher! I was very impressed with this.

The better part of me says Platinum, and the smaller part says Heartgold, if that makes any sense.

I-Like-Shiny-Pichu April 14th, 2010 7:54 AM

I havent played Soul Silver yet (I am getting it next week :)) but Platinum is very good, probably one of the best, but then again I like the idea of pokemon following you and I love the idea of the Pokewalker although from what people have said, I have just wasted my Christmas present on a rubbish game...

RTHookers April 14th, 2010 8:00 AM

Platinum wins. But the original G/S/C wins over Platinum.

salot April 15th, 2010 8:25 AM

platinum was full of adnevtures but i say that heartgold is more appealing to me

AuroraHearts April 15th, 2010 8:47 AM

i prefer hg/ss, dunno why
i just found it alot more interesting than platinum, since i got bored of the new pokemon in platinum

Ezio Auditore da Firenze April 15th, 2010 10:28 AM

Well.....overall HeartGold/SoulSilver is probably hard, as you have a hard time getting anywhere near the levels of the Elite Four for the second round, and it is impossible to get to the stage of beating Red without grinding....

Also, the new games have better graphics, better use of the touchscreen, and whole lot more to do post-plotline than Platinum.

However, Platinum's ok too...but pokemon can't follow you.

The Doctor April 15th, 2010 10:52 AM

Heart Gold/ Soul Silver

More pokemon, more adventures

Elite Overlord LeSabre™ April 15th, 2010 11:00 AM

I personally prefer Platinum. Not to take anything away from SS, but I played Crystal last summer and it just feels I'm doing the same thing all over again. I don't like the "menu in the touch screen" interface because it's all too easy to hit it on accident. Moving Pokemon in the PC system is more cumbersome as well.

Some of the HG/SS features, like Pokeathlon and having Pokemon follow you, didn't really add very much to my enjoyment of the game. And the final boss, Red, is only challenging on account of the steep level curve. I'd rather not have the "toughest" trainer in my games using a Pokemon as weak as Pikachu, thank you very much.

And, though Team Rocket > Team Galactic overall, TR's presence in HG/SS was rather unimpressive to say the least. In Platinum, you had this epic battle in the Distortion World with a crazy megalomaniac with five very tough Pokemon, while in HG/SS you battle this guy with three Pokemon in their mid-30's, with two not even evolved, in a radio broadcast station. Archer only makes this one appearance in the entire game (unlike Cyrus, who you meet at the very start of Platinum), and Archer seems to be a puppet of the (notably absent) Giovanni.

Plus, in Platinum, the female character actually doesn't look like a Koopa-stomping plumber from another of Nintendo's franchises.

They're both good games, but if I had to choose one of the two, I'd pick Platinum.

Takoto April 15th, 2010 11:41 AM

HeartGold was much better in my opinion. I always preferred Johto over Sinnoh.

Kitsora April 15th, 2010 11:58 AM

Heartgold Lover

I don't really want to make anyone upset because they like Platinum.... I freaked out because my very first game ever was Gold version, and when I heard they were making remakes, I drove my friends nuts. I love Heartgold, because I remembered every little detail. Yes, it wasn't exactly perfect, but I knew they had to accommodate the new features somehow. I am very, very pleased with Heartgold, and my baby, Typhlosion, is now one of my base team Pokemon. I probably have a very sentimentally based opinion, but I prefer Heartgold to Platinum any day.

I beat the Elite 4 the second time with my highest leveled pokemon being level 60. Lance's level 75 Dragonite was nothing for my level 59 Dragonite...

Poké-Master April 15th, 2010 1:23 PM

Platinum

Definatley platinum much much more to do like chaining or underground. If soul silver/Heart Gold had these or even the secret bases off ruby/saphire it would be the best game ever! :L

JustinDestruction April 15th, 2010 3:51 PM

I prefer Heart Gold/Soul Silver. Definitely give Platinum a playthrough. It's great, and getting experience is so much more friendly. I do love the poketch. The problem with it is I don't like the graphics. The maps look way too cartoonish if you ask me. I also like the Pokemon following me.

RED BARON April 15th, 2010 4:00 PM

Both are awesome. Soul Silver and Platinum.

A Pixy April 15th, 2010 4:12 PM

I've never played HGSS, so I'll say Purachina./shot for weaboo
/o3o

Luck April 15th, 2010 4:37 PM

Platinum wins for the fact that it was actually fun.
I just made it to Kanto on HG/SS, and I have no motivation to go forward because I just feel like I'm forcing myself if I do.
Platinum also wins in terms of sheer features, but HG/SS has some huge advantages, such as the pokewalker and pokemon following you.

Lil MuDkiP849 April 15th, 2010 9:37 PM

I feel as though the problem with HG/SS wasn't so much that ITS A BAD GAME or whatever(i loved it), it's mostly for the fact that it didn't bring anything GROUND BREAKING or something that set the game apart from what we already have from the sinnoh games.

I mean, i LOVED my SS playthrough, and i actually couldn't stand my platinum story playthrough lol, but im trying to be unbiased here. They added little things into the game like pokemon following you, poke'athlon, pokewalker, you know, little things...but thats the problem with the game, they're just that, little things added, the gameplays the same as it was in sinnoh, you have access to 4th gen pokes as in sinnoh(some of which you can ONLY GET in sinnoh such as leafeon and magnezone if not i stand corrected...), theres a GTS, they changed the pc system to go from controller wise to stylus friendly(i personally liked it, but it WAS a big change and i'm not too sure if many people actually knew about that either before purchasing the game so it was kind of a let down in that department for some...) its stuff people already had in their other games. so yea, there's my two cents on the argument...

Arcadia April 15th, 2010 10:26 PM

Do you guys still play Platinum? Is it possible to battle someone from Heart Gold if your on Platinum?

wee187 April 15th, 2010 10:38 PM

When I played Pt, I was freakishly addicted, which surprised me because I dislike D/P. I dislike the entire Sinnoh region in general; it was too techy for me. I prefer the nature-filled Hoenn region or the history-filled Johto region, but I was willing to set my differences aside for Platinum, and I'm glad I did. I doubt I'll play it again, though, anytime soon.

However, I must admit, I like HG a lot more than Platinum. Maybe it's because I'm just too old school, I dunno. xD 25 hours in and nowhere near being done yet, I love it.

Spech April 15th, 2010 10:53 PM

i like soul silver better than platinum, but i guess that's pretty much because i really really enjoyed the original silver version, because of the 16 badges and all the space to explore. platinum of course has the cool giratina place... still! and yes you can still battle/trade anyone in diamond/pearl/platinum they just dont see the character as the one in HG/SS

NatureKeeper April 16th, 2010 6:14 AM

SoulSilver>Diamond>Platinum. That is my opinion.

JY April 16th, 2010 6:26 AM

I prefer Platinum, only because it's not a remake, but an expanded version.

Edgaar April 16th, 2010 2:03 PM

I do an awful lot of breeding, so I naturally like HGSS better. The breeding mechanic is a lot easier to exploit for nature and IVs.
Plus, there is a lot more to do after the elite 4

TeamFIRE April 16th, 2010 6:08 PM

I has HG and Platinum, i resetted my HG to play again. I liked Platinum, because i randomly bought it one day and didn't even know what the starters were! It was all new to me, the whole lot, and it felt a lot less *cough* like the little kid games. Note Platinum is rated PG and HG is just G. Hmm? Loved how giratina killed that guy heheheh. But with HG it was awesome. I used to have a Gameboy Advance with one of the old games but couldn't save it so never got very far. But i love having the new guys in Platinum, and i like the HG. But really i prefer Platinum. Can't even be bothered finishing HG for the second time.. Yawn.. Love Emerald too. But i don't have it yet.. :(

Cant you see? Game freak want us to go back and play our othe games aswell. Think about it the celebii event in hg and ss the PCP event in hg and sshow you have to use dpt to make those evnts happen. Want your pokemon to have lots of ribbons? send them over to dpt. And loads of other stuff rely on us using our older games. Anyway thats what i think.

InfernoHo-Oh April 17th, 2010 2:06 AM

I like both (and own Both). I do prefer Heartgold, due to my liking of Gold. Sinnoh's not the best region, but it's still good enough for me. I also like Johto Pokemon better overall.

Sir Skids Nickelton April 17th, 2010 2:29 AM

Pt.Well, I Don't Have HG/SS,But My Friend Is Annoyed You Can't Get Magnezone, The Best Pokemon (12 Resistances,Power)

Moltres111 April 17th, 2010 7:02 AM

@title: SoulSilver. XD

but seriously, I like HGSS better than Pt (i'm not even going to mention DP because they were just terrible) because there seems like there's a lot more to do in HGSS than in Pt. :)

in johto, at least.. in kanto there's not much -.-

JohtoNewsService April 17th, 2010 7:06 AM

Didn't play on HG/SS version.
But i had to say that some sprites in Platinum are horrible...
And nostalgia factor from G/S will probably make me choose SS/HG
if i played them : P

Sam_ April 17th, 2010 3:41 PM

It's a hard decision theyre both great games, but just for the great story line and 2 regions i'd have to say HG/SS.

Silhouette April 17th, 2010 5:31 PM

I really don't think I can decide between the two. I'm going to say Platinum, though, not because HGSS was bad, but I think Platinum made me feel like a part of the game.

Sir April 17th, 2010 5:56 PM

Platinum all the way. I spent 368+ hours of my life on that game before it got stolen :( and I plan on buying it again too.

platinum dragonite April 19th, 2010 3:48 AM

i like HG better because i havent played in the johto region for a long long time and i like the johto pokemon more then anyother pokemon from different regions.

Arcelio April 19th, 2010 4:16 AM

I would have to say HeartGold, since it's been so long that I wanted a Gold/Silver/Crystal remake, and I finally got it. Platinum, for me, was 'meh' at best. It's like, yeah, you've got new content, but everything's still the same, and to be honest, it didn't even add that much. At most, it completely shifted the competitive battling scene, with Bullet Punch Scizor, and the Rotom-A formes. Other than that, I felt that Platinum wasn't all there. I did like the new Battle Frontier though, especially Arcade Star Dahlia. That battle was awesome.

HeartGold on the other hand, brought whole new things to the table. You can walk around with your Pokemon, Routes and Trainers have been revamped, the Physical/Special split is now in effect, so you can finally use some of the old Pokemon you passed up the first time around, ect, ect.

I felt that HeartGold was better.

Azary3172 April 19th, 2010 6:01 AM

I loves Platinum many times and finish it! Then, I playing HG or SS for fun whatever is remakes from GSC version! :)

I really liked SoulSilver, but you're right about the PC system.... it was disapointing. I finished SS for the most part, except Red so I'm starting Platinum now.(restarting, cause I never finished...)

Åzurε April 19th, 2010 12:54 PM

Platinum definitely lasts longer, but for me HeartGold was a sweeter ride. It has some nice moments, especially the parts involving Legendaries. I would have been happier if Mewtwo's cave could have been as epik as it was before, full of ~50 fully evolved Pokemon and Chansey. Levels were too low for my liking, but it's kinda more realistic. The Leaders were indeed stronger than normal trainers. I digress. I happened to like the touchscreen PC.

Here's something I think is funny- I saw a complaint here before HGSS was released saying that having the Legendary Pokemon as essentially a sidequest was a good thing, and that he didn't like Platinum for being so grandiose with the storyline. And then somebody in this topic says that Cyrus and the Legends made the story more satisfying.

Platinum is good at giving you something to do, but HeartGold is still very nice, especially aesthetically. It also used the touchscreen properly. End post.

DeathOfBlades April 19th, 2010 8:27 PM

I didn't enjoy Heart Gold. But Platinum I enjoyed.

loliwin April 19th, 2010 9:31 PM

I think Platinum is better. Platinum had epicness and huge replay value. (like villas, contests etc. :D) and there was towns that actually had a decent amount of things to do. Unlike HG/SS, there is not much to do in any of the towns. :(

And Platinum had badass starters.

ritechus April 23rd, 2010 3:49 PM

HEARTGOLD!!! it brings back memories and has many legendaries and cameos from other games. Johto, kanto and more to explore. YOU CAN CATCH MEWTWO!!! lol
platinum is awesome in its own ways too though

AceTrainerSmoke April 23rd, 2010 7:55 PM

I like Soul silver because of the partner pokemon following me and because of the pokeathlon.
